The Book of Negroes is a 2015 miniseries based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Canadian writer Lawrence Hill. The book was inspired by the British freeing and evacuation of former slaves, known as Black Loyalists, who had left rebel masters during the American Revolutionary War. The British transported some 3,000 Black Loyalists to Nova Scotia for resettlement, documenting their names in what was called the Book of Negroes.
The series follows the life of a woman named Aminata Diallo who got kidnapped in Africa and subsequently enslaved in South Carolina where she must navigate a revolution in New York, isolation in Nova Scotia, and the treacherous jungles of Sierra Leone, in an attempt to secure her freedom in the eighteenth century.
Aunjanue Ellis and Lyriq Bent take up the roles of Aminata Diallo and Chekura who are also a lead couple.
The series made its debut on CBC in Canada and BET in the United States and Africa back in 2015. Since the series debut, the show managed to walk away with 16 awards within a span of two years with 5 of them being from 2015.
