SABC Envisioned Plan For DTT And OpenView Rise To Glory

Back in the early 2000s SABC and e.tv had plans to launch their own STB which included more channels from these rivals and also more choice in what to watch.

SABC DTT plans started out with 18 channels you had: SABC 1-3, SABC 4, SABC 5, SABC Sports, SABC Movies, SABC Education, SABC News, a children's channel, a SMME channel, a health channel, a parliamentary channel, a music channel, a history channel and timeshift channels (1 show air an hour later).

While e.tv envisioned having 18 channels and never stated how many of these channels will be supplied by them.

Even though only 2 managed to materialize with 1 still on a test phase, SABC was likely to go bankrupt with all these channels in place even if pay platforms were to carry parts of these channels it wouldn't do much to keep all of them since they're likely to waste a fortune trying to build content for these channels.

Back in 2013/4, SABC former CEO Hlaudi implemented a 90% quota on their channels which led to a decrease in viewership particularly on SABC 3 and a loss of income. Due to this local quota most companies severed ties with the station even Disney was part of the back giving SABC access to 10% of the content with e.tv gaining the rest of it. They tried reducing the quota to 80% but that didn't work out for them.

Now imagine if that quota never existed and SABC managed to get all 18 channels running. The problem here would be the amount of money they'll waste on local content. It's proven to be challenging for the SABC to supply local programming on 3 channels imagine doing that with 18 channels especially if you don't charge monthly fees and most of your viewers don't pay TV licence.

e.tv also had plans to grow their channel lineup. They started with eMovies+, eToonz+, eAfrica+ and eKasi+ so far only the first two survived with newcomers eExtra, eReality, News&Sports and Rewind. Back then they had OpenView and their main concern was quantity so they added a bunch of crappy channels and hoped viewers would be glued to their screens that was not until 2017 came that they were more concerned about entertainment which led to decrease of channels in order to give better programming. Along the way they were struggling to make some doe and the viewership was weak so they added some of their channels on DStv for more income and viewership.

Since then, OpenView has managed to get their platform in 2 million homes and it famous in neighbouring countries that people there are using it illegally in order to avoid the entertainment available in their countries. It has become a charity case but this is to ensure that viewers get more entertainment on the platform.

If SABC got 18 of these channels running by now they would have scrapped a couple of them like SABC 4 & 5, children, SMME, movies and music which would bring them to a total of 10 channels. Even though they rely on funding and partnerships, those partnerships are likely to dissolve and those funders are likely going to take their money elsewhere. In the end, SABC new proposed channels are just the useful and not entertaining batch of channels which include education, sports, health, parliamentary and if possible history running which shows that they're trying to the PBS of South Africa. They're struggling to keep viewers glued to their screens so they want channels that other people will see useful in their everyday lives.

SABC Sports might be used to get new faces in sports another use for the channel is to help minimise disruption of sports on the main channels, Parliamentary might be the toughest one for them since it's not another channel for recycled goods, Health and if possible History will curved through partnerships since there's less content in these fields while archived Education channel is just a reruns channel in partnership with the department of education.

The series follows the adventures of Phineas Flynn and his English stepbrother, Ferb Fletcher. This annoys the boys' sister, Candace, who constantly attempts to get them in trouble by revealing their actions to her mother. Meanwhile, across town, the wannabe-evil scientist Dr. Doofenshmirtz continually attempts to take over the Tri-State area with his various “inator” devices, and Perry the Platypus, the boys' pet and a secret agent, consistently foils his plans on behalf of the O.W.C.A and his commanding officer, Major Mongram. At the end of each episode, the two plots intersect to erase all traces of the boys' project just before Candace can successfully show it to her mother.

In the first of this month’s specials, The Summer Belongs to You (Saturday 4th July at 12:30) Candace is put in charge of Phineas and Ferb while their parents go away on vacation. When she discovers that Phineas and Ferb are going to travel around the world to make the longest day of summer even longer, Candace, against her better judgment, goes along. Buford, Baljeet and Isabella join the trio as they travel to Japan, then France, where they learn in their own way how to believe in the impossible.

Every episode ever of Phineas and Ferb is airing on Disney XD at weekends throughout July from 12:30 to 16:05, starting with a special on Saturday at 12:30.

Prisoners Of Love Season 2 Returns To Telemundo Africa And Season 7 Of Lord Of The Skies Scrapped Possibly Due To Covid-19

Bad news guys, Lord Of The Skies final season has been delayed just like season 6 was delayed back in December 2019 for repeats of Christmas Miracles.

Now the seventh and final season is being delayed with a repeat of Prisoners of Love season two. The worst part is Telemundo supplied highlights for the final season of the show. It might have something to the lockdown currently being implemented in Africa even Star Life had to pause airing on most of their shows with a portion of those series making their way back to the screens with the rest coming back only when the lockdown has eased up a bit.

In the final season of Lord Of The Skies, To avoid falling into the hands of the American Justice, Amado Leal "El Águila Azul", now Amado Casillas (Matías Novoa), has turned himself in to Bernardo Castillo (José Sedek), Secretary of Security of Mexico. The DEA commissioner, Joe Navarro (Guy Ecker), has made every attempt to achieve his extradition. What he does not know is that Baltazar Ojeda (Eduardo Santamarina), a CIA Agent, has the plan to eliminate Amado before, since he is the only one who can prove that within the organization in which both worked together, there is a scheme of corruption and murky management that endangers its existence within it and its freedom. He has already been transferred to a jail on the outskirts of the State of Mexico and is about to be taken to the airport, under strict security measures when the Casillas cartel tries to rescue him and Baltazar Ojeda himself tries to kill him. In the midst of this tension and in parallel, under the supervision of Doña Alba (Lisa Owen) and a specialized doctor, they try a risky procedure to revive Aurelio (Rafael Amaya). That is what it would have been about if it aired.

Now that it's not happening yet let's give you some details regarding Prisoners of Love season two. The second season tells the story of the Centauro revenge against Yolanda, his former lover and Gerardo, the detective who sought to bring him to justice. After running away from the authorities for two years, tired of being constantly harassed by the police and the bloody war between his cartel and his rivals, Centauro faked his death along with his second biological son. In this way he will be able to rebuild his empire without the persecution of the police and, moreover, will allow him to execute his plan of revenge towards Yolanda. Listening to the news of the alleged deaths, Yolanda and her daughter Cristina, as well as Gerardo and his adopted son, Gato, manage to return to Mexico from Canada, where they have lived under the Witness Protection Program. However, it will not be an easy return for Yolanda, since Centaurus will use all his sagacity and power to destroy her and her loved ones in their thirst for revenge.

Prisoners Of Love Season 2 repeats daily June 22 at 23:00 CAT/22:00 WAT/00:00 EAT(24th)

Telemundo Africa's Indefinite And Possibly Scrapped Programming Plans

Back in 2017, Telemundo International announced that the Turkish telenovela Örlene Kadar would make their way to viewer's screens in Latin America and Africa from a year later so far the series only made its way to Latin America.

This was Engin Akyürek comeback to acting after Kara Para Aşk. Ölene Kadar which was retitled into Hasta La Muerte (Until Death) with Akyürek taking up the lead role of Dr. Dağhan Soysür who was convicted for murdering a business tycoon Sezai Karali when he was a 24-year old medical-grad pursuing his specialization. Due to this false accusation, Dağhan lost his youth, his career, the woman he loved and his unborn child. 11 years later, Dağhan is called upon by a young lawyer Selvi Nardan (Fahriye Evcen Özçivit), who claims that she knows he is innocent and can prove in court that Dağhan never committed the murder for which he has served more than a decade in confinement.

Though the series had a strong theme and direction, and Akyürek's romantic pair with Fahriye was making waves internationally, the series failed to impress the local Turkish audience, and due to low ratings, the series had its finale at its 13th episode. It was produced by TIMS and written by Elif Usman anf Sevgi Yilmaz. The first four episodes were directed by Umur Turagay and the rest by Feride Kaytan in January 2017.

It's failure to attract it's viewers is not the cause for the delay or possible termination of the show in Africa. Even though the series shares similarities to Telemundo's El Rostro De La Venganza (The Face Of Destiny). It shows that Telemundo which is now flooded with repeats during the daytime is working on a way to reduce them or carefully go unnoticed. Eva, owned by AMC International has the long running American series, Bold And The Beautiful from CBS in its own slot with Mexican, Colombian and Argentine telenovelas filling up two or less slots.

Telemundo in the United States is also airing telenovelas produced not only produced in Mexico and Colombia but also Turkey, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia just to name a few. Even though they're being fed repeats to a lesser extent they're still dominating the market since that channel is also used for other entertainment unlike international markets.

There have been signs that Telemundo Africa is not only for Mexican and Colombian telenovelas. Back in 2017, the channel aired the Argentine telenovela Gavilanes which doesn't make sense to me at all since they brought Tierra De Reyes and both these shows are based on the 2003 telenovela, Pasíon De Gavilanes. Why not source out something different from that market.

Telemundo international also picked up the Kara Para Ask (Black Money Love) and Muhtesem Yüzyil (The Sultan) sometime ago and Latin America managed to air one of them so far. Which begs the question on what Telemundo Africa has planned once El Señor Del Los Cielos (Lord Of The Skies) and Sin Seños Si Hay Paraiso (The Way To Paradise) concludes. They'll more likely air biographies from their studios, El Chema, El Recluso and telenovelas from Imagen Television.

Their super series alone fill up most of the airtime now that most of them can't get above 100 episodes per season and Telemundo in Africa uses a 7 day a week format in a 2 hour timeslot. A series running in that pace can take up 3 months. Judging by this format it's possible that reruns will air in the premiere slot.

If you had to tally this channel's lineup I'd say they're more secure with daytime shows as opposed to night time. They are stronger in that area and are able to get newer programming on the daytime slot but the super series is the downfall. At the moment there's less to no repetition in that area but it's likely to occur in that area very soon and Telemundo will have to find a way out to keep viewers entertained if they hope to be around that long in Africa.

The Channels are committed to connecting, informing and reporting on communities who have been overlooked in the discourse. We seek to raise the level of awareness and consciousness around the issues affecting the people of South Africa.
