News Shorts: Jellystone Might End With A Season 4 On Cartoon Network And Max, Bob Hearts Abishola Will End On CBS After 5 Seasons And History Channel Across Africa Explores The Many Legacies Left By Past Civilisations

Jellystone has mysteriously been renewed for a season 3 & 4

Jellystone! is an American animated television comedy series developed by C. H. Greenblatt for Max and Cartoon Network. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and features reimagined versions of various characters by Hanna-Barbera.

The series was renewed for a second season by 2022 with a further 40 episodes. It could have gone the same route as Little Ellen and Close Enough but instead Warner Bros. Studios opted to split these 40 episodes into two seasons bringing it to a total of 4 seasons with the latter expected to air by January 2024.

Most crew members who had worked on the show had since then moved to Disney's STUGO while C.H. Greenblatt is developing a new show for Disney Television Animation. Honestly, Jellystone was one of those few shows to get some light of day after a one year hiatus.

Bob and Abishola call it quits

The fifth season of the multi-cam comedy is due to premiere on Feb. 12, with the series finale now set for May 13 on CBS with M-Net also anticipated to air the finale sometime in 2024. The show is described as a love story about Bob, a middle-aged compression sock businessman from Detroit, who unexpectedly fell for his cardiac nurse, Abishola, a Nigerian immigrant, while recovering from a heart attack.

The ending of “Bob Hearts Abishola” marks the potential end of an era at CBS. With the show ending, coupled with the previously announced ending of “Young Sheldon,” Chuck Lorre does not currently have any shows slated to be on the CBS schedule going into next fall. Unless the network picks up a new show from Lorre and his team between now and then, it will be the first time Lorre has not had at least one show on CBS since 2003.

Lorre’s run at CBS has been nothing short of historic. In the past 20 years he has co-created and executive produced shows for the network including long-running hits like “The Big Bang Theory,” “Two and Half Men,” “Mom,” and “Young Sheldon.” He is currently prepping the series “Bookie” for Max.

Star Life cutting back on shows

Star Life is an international entertainment channel operated by Disney Star which is home to variety of English dubbed Bollywood series and movies. The channel currently offers 13 TV series which is somewhat around the range of its premium counterpart, StarPlus.

Last month, it was announced that Star Life would be rolling out its third supernatural drama Divya Drishti in place of Night Of Doom in its conflicted primetime schedule serving as one of the few 45 minute offerings on the channel as the latter is padded with 21 minute shows.

As seen through an updated EPG, the current rebroadcast of A Magical Love Story will also be airing at 23:00 once Night Of Doom ends on 13 November. Theoretically, it is believed that Divya Drishti could commence in 2024 perhaps in place of Mismatched.

Interesting to note, A Magical Love Story will be ending soon so maybe Mismatched moves to 23:00 as Divya Drishti takes up the 22:00 timeslot.

Also examined are the other 603 commandments prescribed by Moses that took a backseat to the more famous first 10. What was in these commandments and why have they been largely forgotten?
“Part 2: The Laws of Man” investigates that both Exodus and Deuteronomy tell us that Moses brought down these commandments in the form of two tablets. We take a close look at these last commandments and see how they’ve translated into our modern legal system.

This two-hour special examines how crucifixion has travelled across history, empires, cultures...and is even still in use today.

Development Alert: Loyiso Gola On The HISTORY Channel Africa

'Why Does Everyone Hate the British Empire?'

It's as funny as it is heart-breaking... Why Does Everyone Hate the British Empire unpicks the legacy of the British Empire in four countries, including South Africa.

In this new four-part series, British comedian Al Murray travels to India, Australia, Jamaica and South Africa and pairs up with a local comedian in each, to explore the history of British colonial rule in that country and its legacy. On Al's road trip across South Africa he's accompanied by local comedic legend Loyiso Gola.

Tune in every Saturday at 20h15, starting 28 October.

In the first episode of Why Does Everyone Hate the British Empire Loyiso hosts Al in South Africa, exposing brutal truths, modern day legacies and the global impact of some of Britain’s greatest colonial conquests. Loyiso and Al explore the Empire’s role in the gold rush, exposes the deals that started apartheid, and the battlefield secrets of KwaZulu-Natal.

This is colonial British history as it has never been told. In each episode, experts and every day folk also have their say as Al, with the help of his host, pieces together an honest account of what the British Empire really did in their country. How they did it. And who, if anyone, still cares.

"People usually back away from information if it's confrontational so this is very light, but it really has a potent message behind it."
- Loyiso Gola

"History is neither there to make us feel good, nor to make us feel bad. It's there for us to consider where we've come from."
- Al Murray

HISTORY Channel Africa Launches ‘My History Moments’

The HISTORY® Channel Africa (DStv 186) is excited to launch My History Moments, a poignant short-form series that sees notable South Africans share pivotal moments from their lives that have historical significance and profound personal meaning. To further uncover stories that shaped our nation, the channel is also calling on South Africans to share their My History Moments as part of the campaign.

“The HISTORY channel is renowned the world over for sharing stories that matter, stories that tell of major turning points in history or that have evolved us a society and as individuals. Through this project we’re honoured to share these deeply personal local stories, that tell of our incredible resilience, that will resonate with many South Africans,” says Marketing Manager of the HISTORY Channel Africa, Anita Gardini.

As part of the moving series, the 4-5-minute ‘episodes’ will be broadcast on-air on DStv 186 and shared across the HISTORY® Channel Africa’s social media platforms and YouTube channel in the coming weeks. The pieces were produced by Schultz Creative.

Some of the well-known South Africans who will be sharing their moments - from groundbreaking events to personal triumphs - include global business speaker Vusi Thembekwayo, economist Dawie Roodt, broadcasters, John Robbie and Malcom Gooding and singer and songwriter, Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

Of the My History Moments project Chaka Chaka says, “Sometimes we shy away from our history; we don’t talk about it and it’s important that we tell our stories. We tell the stories so that the next generation knows who we are, where we come from and the importance of our history. But for me the most important thing that should come from telling our stories is social cohesion.”

She adds, “It wasn’t very easy to choose My History Moment. Getting Bishop Tutu, Madiba and Bill Clinton on stage to come and do bum jives – that was making history too. But I decided to choose something personal and that made me feel part of South Africa.”

Longtime broadcaster, David O’ Sullivan says being a journalist has meant that he’s been at the forefront of numerous historically significant moments. He explains, “I find that the things that I was involved in are now in the actual history books. But at the time when something significant happened, I always realised that it was a big day, or a big moment and those moments stayed with me. If we are going to tell people about the past, we have to tell it in the form of stories like these. We need actual stories that invigorate people, that they can be passionate about and that evoke an emotion in them.”

Another contributor, poet and artist, Professor Pitika Ntuli says, “I’ve always been very interested in history. Having a historical memory prevents us from collapsing into chaos, war or plunging into unsustainable situations. History is, in a sense, a GPS that helps guide our own thoughts, so that we know what we should not be doing and what we should be doing better.”

Regional Manager Naz Khan concludes, “Within each My History Moment lies a treasure trove of personal lived experiences and life stories. It's not just about recounting events; it is important for us to honour that experience. There is profound value in preserving these unique narratives. By protecting them, we ensure that the rich tapestry of human experience and the lessons they teach endure for generations to come.”

The HISTORY Channel Africa invites you to share your #MyHistoryMoment with us. Whether it is a heart-warming memory, a funny anecdote, a significant life event, or your experience of a pivotal moment in history – we want to hear your story. To share your moment, simply use the hashtag #MyHistoryMoment and tag the History Channel Africa when posting to social media.

Recap To The Month: ‘Great African Mysteries’ And ‘Great African Escapes’ To Bring South African History To Life

The HISTORY® Channel Africa, DStv 186, is excited to announce the production of two new local documentary shows which preserve and recognise South African stories of historical significance.

Great African Mysteries will unlock the secrets of Africa’s past, and Great African Escapes investigates some of the most daring escapes in local history. Both standalone shows are presented by well-known local talk radio personality, John Robbie and were produced by Clive Morris Productions (CMP).

Through their engaging narratives and historical accuracy each show will entertain and inform viewers, as they are transported to different moments that shape our collective identity.

Great African Mysteries with John Robbie will air on Friday 21 July at 21h05. The show will explore three of the biggest mysteries in South Africa, from the discovery of Homo Naledi at the Cradle of Humankind, to the hoard of gold which Paul Kruger supposedly hid from the British during the Second Boer War. It also investigates events surrounding the crash of a South African passenger aircraft, known as the Helderberg, in 1987 in which all 159 people on board were killed.

Meanwhile, Great African Escapes with John Robbie which airs on Friday 28 July at 21h05, investigates three daring local escapes. This show will look at the death-defying passenger rescue from the sinking MTS Oceanos cruise liner in 1991 and will also reveal in detail the sensational prison break from Marshall Square by four anti-apartheid activists - Mosie Moolla, Harold Wolpe, Arthur Goldreich and Abdulhay Jassat. Finally, it will uncover Albie Sachs’ miraculous escape from a car bomb explosion in 1988 and how this saw him adopt the approach of "soft vengeance" in the form of achieving freedom in a non-racial and democratic South Africa.

The HISTORY Channel Africa delves into each of these stories of significance with exclusive interviews, fascinating first-hand accounts and archival footage.

About being the show host, Robbie says, “I’ve always been a fan of the HISTORY Channel, so was delighted when the team reached out to me to be involved. It is such an important project because so many South Africans don’t necessarily know about these stories which are key moments in our country’s history, shedding light on significant events and remarkable individuals. Both shows go beyond surface level and tell the stories behind the actual events.”

Marketing Manager of the HISTORY Channel Africa, Anita Gardini says, “We’re a premiere channel for historical storytelling, so we are incredibly proud to uncover six local stories through these two shows. It was great to work with John; whose effortless narration and additions of little-known facts bring each of these moments in time to life. HISTORY Africa believes it’s important to uncover and share our history in order to safeguard our shared heritage. We hope that viewers find these stories gripping and engaging and walk away wanting to know even more about our country’s history.”

Khayelihle Dom Gumede, Chief Operating Officer at CMP, the production company tasked with the project, adds, “Unearthing just a few of South Africa’s historical mysteries and great escapes has been an incredible journey of fact finding and storytelling for CMP. And along the way, to meet inspiring people like Justice Albie Sachs and Professor Lee Berger who've had such an impact on our world and our country, has had a profound influence on our production team. To be part of the channel known as the premier destination for historical features is an enormous privilege.”

The History Channel Africa Brings Viewers All New Series, New Seasons And A New Look

This April the HISTORY Channel Africa (DStv 186) will investigate the illegal antiquities trade, explore engineering disasters, dig into treasure quests across the globe and delve into the stories of the people, places and events that shaped our world.

Looting History is an all new series every Wednesday at 19h25 (starting 5 April) which shines a spotlight on how the trade in stolen antiquities and art has become a major source of income for criminal syndicates, gangs, and terrorists across the globe. Precious ancient treasures torn out of the ground. Priceless art ripped from walls. It’s a modern tragedy, as the grandest of mankind’s achievements are reduced to little more than obscene commodities.

Using a different case study, each episode of Looting History uncovers how and why everybody from Islamic State to the Chinese Triad have muscled in on the act, and why international law enforcement agencies are determined to shut it down, but often powerless to act. The series documents among others the pillage of Ancient Egypt, the exploitation of Syria’s precious ancient past and the Nazi looting campaign that saw one in five art objects in Europe stolen.

Then, a brand-new season of Massive Engineering Mistakes on Tuesdays at 20h15 (starting 11 April) investigates what went wrong in some of the world’s biggest engineering disasters. Season 4 will follow on directly from season 3. From a major freeway bridge collapse during peak hour traffic in the United States, to a shipping catastrophe blocking one of the most vital trade routes in the world - the Suez Canal.

Behind History on Sundays at 20h15 (starting 23 April) takes an in depth look at the stories behind some of the most momentous events, remarkable ideas, and extraordinary people the world has ever known.

Each episode of the six-part series focuses on a single theme and delivers a fascinating look into each subject, and in doing so reveals some of its lesser-known facts. Themes include ‘Icons’, which explores the people and places that have become globally recognised symbols, and ‘Breakthrough’, which looks at the political, scientific and medical advances that have shaped our world. Other episodes investigate the themes of ‘War’, ‘Leaders’, ‘Catastrophe’, and ‘Fame’.

From the Berlin Wall to Desert Storm, Pearl Harbor, the Hindenburg disaster and the end of Apartheid, we’ve read the headlines – but how much do we really know about what happened? Behind History offers a unique and fascinating take on key events and characters from our past.

In a History Channel Africa favourite, World’s Greatest Treasure Mysteries season 3 on Saturdays at 19h25 (starting 29 April) is hosted by real-life treasure hunters Rick and Marty Lagina (from Curse of Oak Island fame). The series uncovers the greatest treasure hunts of the past, present and perhaps the future. Great storytelling, compelling interviews with treasure-hunters, historians and experts, and on-location treasure hunts reveal amazing new details and clues, advancing the hunt.

With content that seeks to delve deeper, it is only fitting that the HISTORY Channel Africa logo has recently undergone a refresh. The channel’s new look and identity are part of a global refresh that started with A+E Networks in the US and then rolled out internationally, rolled out throughout EMEA this March.

The new elements communicate the idea of exposing what’s just below the surface: uncovering content hidden in plain sight and encouraging the curious to discover the history around them.

Tune in to the HISTORY Channel Africa, on DStv 186, to unearth the real stories that lie beneath the surface.
