Development Alert: The Loud House Will Be Returning To Nicktoons For Viewers Across Africa

During the year, Paramount shuttered it's door for consumers in Africa affecting the distribution of BET and MTV Base. MultiChoice had since then sought out Base Pulse to fill up the gap left by MTV Base while certain BET shows found its way to MTV.

Paramount had also restructured it's feed for Nickelodeon with consumers outside of Africa now able to watch The Loud House. As some viewers can recall, the show was banned in Kenya by 2015/6 even though Nickelodeon offered censorship.

The KFCB was also responsible for the ban of Gravity Falls and Steven Universe but in recent years these shows had resurfaced so it's likely the ban was removed. Of course, these shows continue to be censored for viewers outside of South Africa.

Nicktoons, an animation channel that features shows from Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. will also be airing The Loud House. This wouldn't be the first time it appeared on the channel as it aired back in 2021/2 but never got to complete season 1.

We can only assume that Paramount is now making The Loud House available on Nicktoons as a means to align the channel with it's European counterpart.

Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. formed part of these endeavours for sometime which is why their ads remain text less as they're shared across regions. With Nickelodeon operating under two feeds known as Global Unlimited (SA) and Global Limited (ROA).

Nick In Your Language and NickMusic served as the variations from other global feeds for Nicktoons. But with Paramount Africa that shuttered its doors it appears these endeavours had been wind down I mean MTV doesn't air any local programming.

NickMusic had not been seen on the channel it's likely the decision to close MTV's music channels affected the show indirectly. While Nick In Your Language remains on the air there's been zero advertising about it by the company.

The Loud House is eyeing a debut on the channel in June following it's return to Nickelodeon in other parts of Africa earlier in the year.

eToonz And ePlesier Are Believed To Have The Least Amount Of Viewers

eToonz is a South African based children's channel that offers a mixture of animated and live-action shows alongside films. This includes MasterChef Junior, Hank Zipzer, DreamWorks Dragons: Race To The Edge and Angelina Ballerina.

ePlesier serves as a dedicated channel to older shows viewed on e.tv and eExtra's Kuiertyd. These would include Kelders Van Geheime, Annekan Die Swa Kry, Doodsondes and Stiletto Vendetta.

As mentioned, eMedia Investments had published it's ratings cards for all of its 8 channels. It's through this where one can get some pointers on how these channels are performing overall and things aren't looking for eToonz.
It serves as one of the company's longest running channels alongside e.tv, eMovies and eNCA through a separate agreement with MultiChoice. But in terms of investment and marketing the channel is lagging behind its other comrades.

Even ePlesier despite only serving reruns and only packaged on Openview has more viewers than eToonz. You can only conclude this as eMedia Investments charges advertisers more money for ePlesier than they would with eToonz.

This news doesn't come as surprise as Canal+ and Warner Bros. Discovery were in a dispute last year regarding the carriage of their 12 channels including Cartoon Network and Cartoonito.

Warner Bros. Discovery revealed Cartoon Network was responsible for 50% of kids viewing on DStv. This would mean eToonz formed part of the other 50% alongside Disney Channel and Nickelodeon.

eToonz is a channel that is also distributed on DStv so viewers are going to expect that the channel is getting it's money's worth but for ePlesier to rack more dough is kinda depressing.

But from what was understood about Cartoon Network, a percentage of these viewers are adults. You can understand why ePlesier might have gotten the upper hand because kids prefer YouTube and TikTok while a majority on linear TV are adults.

ePlesier likely factored in what led to kill off primetime in the afternoon for daily repeats of Sout Van Die Aarde, Yosef and Bittersoet. Reruns can draw a decent amount of viewers and potential revenue it's like that with e.tv and Mr. Bones.

CBS Boss Alec Botnick Has Been Named President Of Nickelodeon Animation Studios

A longtime CBS exec, Botnick will lead the studio into its next chapter while continuing to serve in his current role as Executive Vice President (EVP) of CBS Studios Comedy Development, Head of Animation and Alternative.

Additionally, after BET Studios in December became a label of CBS Studios, the same is now being done with Nickelodeon Animation Studios, which also will function as a label within the David Stapf-run TV studio going forward.

With that, all production units in Cheeks’ expanded portfolio after the Skydance merger are now being consolidated into one, CBS Studios.

As the head of Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Botnick will help the studio reinvent its approach to reaching preschoolers and evolve into a multi-platform brand. He’ll also take charge of Nickelodeon’s unscripted arm, which includes the Kids’ Choice Awards. Of course, he will also guide the development of new TV series while overseeing Nickelodeon’s most important franchises like SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and PAW Patrol.

A former WME agent, Botnick joined CBS Studios in 2015 as Vice President (VP), Comedy Development and was upped to executive vp in 2021.

While at CBS, Botnick has helped develop scripted series including for animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, Everybody Still Hates Chris and Digman!, along with live-action comedies Ghosts, The Neighborhood, and the upcoming vampire comedy Eternally Yours, as well as Paramount+’s Australian comedy Colin From Accounts. He also developed Dead to Me, and American Vandal at Netflix. He will continue to develop scripted comedies and alternative titles for CBS Studios while maintaining oversight of animated development across the CBS, Comedy Central and MTV brands.

In more executive news, Ashley Kaplan, who previously served as Nickelodeon’s EVP of Unscripted and Digital Franchise Studios, will shift into a consulting role on Monday, April 13, supporting the TV Media division on special projects through the end of the year.

Kaplan had been co-running the animated studio with Botnick for the past four months. Back in November, three months after former CBS President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Cheeks added oversight of Paramount cable brands such as MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and BET in his new role as Paramount’s Chair of TV Media, he unveiled leadership for most divisions.

Kaplan and Botnick were tapped at the time to oversee Nickelodeon Animation Studios. Over her seven-year tenure at Nickelodeon, Kaplan has shepherded the company’s large YouTube output in form of short-form content, including Kid Cowboy.

Jules Borkent, EVP of Global Commercial Partnerships and Operations, will continue to oversee the business and strategy of Nickelodeon Kids & Family.

Read Cheeks' memo in its entirety below:

Team,

I’m excited to announce that Alec Botnick has been appointed President of Nickelodeon Animation Studios. Alec will lead Nickelodeon Animation Studios into its next chapter, while also continuing his current role as EVP of CBS Studios comedy development, alternative & animation. Similar to BET Studios, Nickelodeon Animation Studios will now operate as its own label for television within CBS Studios.

For Nickelodeon, Alec will oversee the animation studio and its evolution across digital, TV and streaming as we reimagine how we meet today’s kids and families. Alec’s leadership will be essential in shaping our next phase as Nickelodeon reinvents how we reach preschoolers, starting where discovery happens first and evolving into a true multi-platform brand. He also will lead Nickelodeon’s unscripted programming for television, including the Kids’ Choice Awards, while also guiding the development of new series and overseeing our long-running hits, ensuring Nickelodeon remains home to the world’s most iconic kids’ franchises like SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, PAW PATROL and more.

Alec will continue to develop scripted comedies and alternative projects for CBS Studios, as well as maintain oversight of animated development across the CBS, Comedy Central and MTV brands for owned and third-party platforms. Series and projects Alec has helped develop include GHOSTS and ETERNALLY YOURS for CBS, the critically acclaimed Australian comedy COLIN FROM ACCOUNTS for Paramount+ and the animated series “Odd Jobs” for Prime Video.

I also want to share that Ashley Kaplan will transition to a consulting role beginning Monday. In this capacity, she will support the TV Media division on special projects through the end of the year. We are grateful to Ashley for her years of leadership and appreciate her continued partnership.

Jules Borkent, executive vice president of global commercial partnerships and operations, will continue to oversee Nickelodeon Kids & Family’s business and strategy, working in partnership with Alec and other key stakeholders to maximize the Nick brand.

Please join me in congratulating Alec on this well-deserved role. I’m excited for what’s ahead as we continue building the next chapter of Nickelodeon.

All the best,

George

Development Alert: Electric Bloom Cancelled On Disney Channel After One Season

Electric Bloom is an American musical comedy television series created by Alex Fox, Eric Friedman, and Rachel Lewis that premiered on July 10, 2025 on Disney Channel. The series stars Lumi Pollack, Carmen Sanchez, Ruby Marino, and Nathaniel Buescher.

Synopsis for Electric Bloom

It follows a famous pop music group called "Electric Bloom" consists of Posey Parker, Jade Castillo, and Tulip Aoki where they named their group over the fact that they have flower-based names. Electric Bloom reflects on their story on how they became the biggest band in the world on their "Ask Us Anything" livestream, starting from the day they met in 9th grade at Edison County High School and became a school band.

According to Production Weekly, Disney Channel had renewed Vampirina: Teenage Vampire and Wizards Beyond Waverly Place for further seasons. In these strings of shows, Electric Bloom was apparently left out leading to speculation it got the axe.

In recent years, Disney Channel hasn't been upfront about the status of most of their shows as the focus has shifted to streaming. The company now relies on Disney+ to determine whether any of these shows sink or swim.

Historically, Disney had often adhered to a "65-episode rule," where many shows were ended regardless of popularity to keep the brand fresh and manage costs. Today, this has evolved into a "soft cancellation" strategy where underperforming shows are simply left without updates.

With the cancellation of Electric Bloom and the final season renewal of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. This would leave Vampirina: Teenage Vampire and the upcoming series Coven Academy as the only live-action to broadcast on Disney Channel.

Channel Premiere: Play Room Unveils Fast & Furious: Spy Racers From DreamWorks Animation

Play Room, a South African based children's channel operated by Ngwato Nkosi Group that offers content in English and Zulu will rollout its first new series, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers. It will broadcast on the channel daily at 17:30 from 1st April.

Synopsis for Fast & Furious: Spy Racers

Teenager Tony Toretto follows in the footsteps of his cousin Dom when he and his friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization called SH1FT3R bent on world domination.

The series is executive produced by Vin Diesel, Neal H. Moritz, Chris Morgan, Tim Hedrick (Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien). Diesel, Moritz and Morgan also served as producers on the live-action Fast & Furious film franchise.

The cast features Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) as Dom’s younger cousin turned spy racer Tony Toretto; Camille Ramsey as Layla Gray, a notable underground racer who works for SH1FT3R and Luke Youngblood (Harry Potter) as Frostee Benson, a 13-year old tech genius.

Prior to its broadcast on Play Room, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers was also broadcast on eToonz (South Africa), Showmax (Africa) and Netflix (international).

Fast & Furious: Spy Racers has yet to be made available on DreamWorks Channel as most of its later shows are available on these outlets. With the only exception being Play Room as this is their first with others like Rio and Shrek being films.

Could Paramount Look To Merge Cartoonito With Nick Jr.?

Paramount is looking to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery after Netflix walked out of the bidding war. As preschool brands like Cartoonito and Nick Jr. likely to be owned by the same company, with this merger set to close by the end of 2026.

According to Paramount, they intend to keep most of the company intact but with the amount of debt they'd be digesting it's hard to believe they'll retain both Cartoonito and Nick Jr. if this deal closes.

Cartoonito is home to shows like Bugs Bunny Builders, Batwheels and Grizzy And The Lemmings. While Nick Jr. offers Paw Patrol, Dora The Explorer and The Tiny Chef Show.

Even if Paramount plans to keep Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. while inheriting Cartoon Network and Cartoonito. There's definitely going to be some restructuring content wise, likely for its international variants of Cartoonito.

Cartoonito had been struggling to find it's footing in the US despite having hits shows like Batwheels. All the while Warner Bros. Discovery continued expanding its preschool slate the development of Hey BMO and Foster's Funtime.

Of course the problem part here is that none of these shows have a platform and with this buyout by Paramount. This offering will most definitely get picked up by Nick Jr.

Nick Jr. has global appeal and it's history dates to the 80s as opposed to Cartoonito which dates to the mid 2000s in the UK/Europe so it's safe to bet they will handle this department.

Cartoonito will likely lean more toward shows like Mr. Bean and Grizzy And The Lemmings perhaps become a complementary/extension to Nick Jr. Think of how Candle Media structured it's Moonbug and Blippi And Friends channels internationally.

Nick Jr. could offer a programming block on Cartoonito perhaps for older shows like Nella The Princess Knight, Bubble Guppies and Rusty Rivets.

Disney Channel Celebrates 20th Anniversary in Africa

• Channel launched on 25 September 2006
• Brand-New Programming from Animation to Live-Action
• Viewers invited to celebrate with iconic stories, characters, surprises and more

On 25 September 2006, Disney Channel debuted on DStv (Channel 303) for the first time and welcomed viewers to a world of humour, music, friendship and feel-good fun, through iconic live action and animation series. Since then, the channel has continued to introduce unforgettable stories and characters and, in 2026, Disney Channel will be celebrating with fans and viewers across Africa.

In the run up to the 20th anniversary, expect the very latest and greatest programming, on-screen superstars and fun, as well as extra surprise reveals, events, competitions and activations throughout the year, inspired by everything the channel has become synonymous with - music, fashion, friendship and adventure. Keep your eyes glued to the channel as well as on social media platforms for more details.

Link to launch promo video

Kicking off the celebrations this March, a special Throwback programming block will be introduced to the channel, bringing special themed episodes from iconic series. For the first time, fans will have a hand in curating the block by voting on social media for what they want to see - from Hannah Montana to Raven’s Home, Liv & Maddie, Bunk’d and more. With voting now open, the power lies in the hands of the fans.

There is also a slate of brand-new content coming to the channel later in the year. These include the animated original Dragon Striker, set at an elite academy where sports and magic combine, as farm boy Key discovers his ultrapowerful natural talent and learns he may be destined to become the legendary Dragon Striker. Also on the animation front, the brand-new ZOMBIES: The Re-Animated Series follows the daily lives of Zed, Addison, and the entire Seabrook crew as A-spen’s alien time-warp technology gives them a chance to relive senior year with all their friends. Celebrating the high-energy music from the iconic Descendants and ZOMBIES franchises, the Descendants/ZOMBIES Worlds Collide Tour thrilled sold-out crowds in over 40 arenas across North America last summer - a concert special will be coming exclusively to Disney Channel.

The channel will also continue its Movie Mayhem slot every Friday at 17:00 where fans can catch all their favourite Disney and Pixar movies - from Toy Story to Wreck it Ralph - as well as several Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOMs), including The Suite Life Movie and Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe. Fans of the wildly popular Descendants franchise will also be pleased to know the DCOM returns later this year, welcoming new Descendants from Alice in Wonderland and more!

For two decades, Disney Channel has offered up some of the best in entertainment for kids as we’ve danced through the halls of East High with High School Musical, navigated the supernatural secrets of Wizards of Waverly Place, and grown up alongside legends like Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana and Zendaya in K.C. Undercover.

The channel also found local resonance with shows like the SAFTA award-winning series Disney’s Cookabout - a cooking adventure series that saw local kids learning about where their food comes from. The animated series Kiff - which premiered in 2023 was created by South Africans Nic Smal and Lucy Heavens. The buddy-comedy is currently in its second season and has been renewed for a third.

Comedy Central And Adult Swim Could Benefit From The Warner Bros. Discovery And Paramount Merger

Paramount is in process of trying to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery home to brands like CNN, Cartoon Network and OWN. This merger would mean that Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, CBS News and CNN, and BET and OWN will operate under one roof.

The biggest gainer within this M&A would be Comedy Central and Adult Swim.

Comedy Central's content slate has been reliant on reruns of sitcoms like Becker, Hot In Cleveland, The Nanny and Rules Of Engagement. The only thing basically carrying the channel would be South Park and The Daily Show.

Adult Swim has been regarded as destination hub for adult animation with shows like Rick And Morty, Robot Chicken, Primal and Final Space. Unlike Comedy Central, it lacks in scale with it's linear operations residing mainly in Canada.

With this merger, Comedy Central stands to benefit with an increased slate of content. The channel is no stranger to animation with Beavis And Butthead and it's spinoff Daria as well as Drawn Together, The Ren And Stumpy Show and Ugly Americans.

Canada is the only known market to offer a 24 hour channel for Adult Swim maybe this merger will even lead more feeds for the brand perhaps under Comedy Central.

Disney Channel Relaunching In Spain This April In Place Of Disney Junior

Last month, it was reported that Disney XD would be shutting down its remaining international feed in Poland by April. As Disney is looking to launch its preschool oriented brand Disney Jr. with AMC Networks International likely to be a partner.

Now reports are going around that Disney is looking to revive some of linear operations with Disney Channel set to relaunch in Spain. This comes after its reported relaunch in the UK was debunked for Disney Jr. in 2025.

Very odd part about this is the channel is said to be replacing Disney Junior with the preschool brand downsized to a programming block in April.

Press statement

The historic Disney youth channel is preparing its return to television in Spain after its disappearance at the beginning of 2025. The company is finalizing a strategic move that will mean the recovery of Disney Channel in the Spanish market, after the brand disappeared from the television landscape.

The channel stopped broadcasting in Spain on January 7, 2025, putting an end to more than two decades of continuous presence in Spanish homes. Its closure marked the end of an era for a channel that had been one of the benchmarks for youth entertainment since its launch in 1998 and that, for years, was also part of the DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) offering.

Now, the channel is preparing its return through a brand change that will directly affect Disney Jr. The children's channel, currently dedicated to the youngest members of the household, will be transformed into Disney Channel through a rebranding process, thus recovering one of the company's most recognizable brands on television.

The move will not involve the total disappearance of preschool programming. Within the new Disney Channel, a daily window dedicated to Disney Jr. content will be maintained, with series and programs aimed at a preschool audience, while the rest of the schedule will be oriented toward a family and youth audience, following the classic model of the channel.

This change will allow the company to reorganize its television presence in Spain and reposition the Disney Channel brand in the linear offering, at a time when children's consumption continues to combine traditional television and streaming. The channel will be available on all platforms where Disney Jr. currently broadcasts.

The official announcement of the brand change will take place in mid-March, at which time the company will reveal more details about the channel's new stage and its programming. The transformation of the current Disney Jr. into Disney Channel will become effective on April 1, the scheduled date for the channel's relaunch in Spain.

‘Garfield’ Animated Series Ordered By Paramount+ With Lamorne Morris Voicing Famous Orange Cat

Garfield is making a TV return. Paramount+ has picked up a new original 2D-animated series featuring the iconic lasagna-loving orange cat, voiced by Emmy-winning actor-comedian Lamorne Morris (New Girl, Fargo).

Tentatively titled Garfield, the series, from Nickelodeon Animation Studios, is inspired by Jim Davis’ original comic strip and features the chonky feline at his finest, most sarcastic and lackadaisical. Dave H. Johnson (Middlemost Post) and John Trabbic III (SpongeBob SquarePants, Middlemost Post) serve as executive producers.

This pickup of Garfield, which is currently in production, brings to an end the project’s lengthy road to the screen. It started back in 2019 — two Paramount mergers and regimes ago — when Nickelodeon’s then-parent Viacom acquired the IP to the cartoon from owners Paws and announced the development of a new Garfield animated series.

Under the agreement, Paramount predecessor Viacom also took over managing the global merchandising rights to the property. Since then, the Garfield character has been integrated into the Paramount Products & Experiences portfolio across categories spanning apparel, toys, publishing, food, pets and more, including such Nickelodeon game franchises as All-Star Brawl and Kart Racers, in which the Mondays-loathing cat was voiced by Frank Welker.

Meanwhile, the animated series has taken awhile to come together, spending seven years in development and production.

It is the first Garfield animated series since Paws’ 2009 The Garfield Show, which ran for five seasons on Cartoon Network/Boomerang in the U.S. with Welker voicing the title character.

Separately, there is Alcon/Sony’s Garfield 3D CGI animation feature franchise with Chris Pratt as the voice of the tabby cat. The first film, The Garfield Movie, was released in 2024; plans for a sequel, with Pratt reprising his role were announced last year. It is moving forward.

Since its launch in 1978, Davis’ syndicated comic strip has chronicled the life of the eponymous cat, his owner Jon Arbuckle and Odie the dog, as well as various friends. The brand currently counts over 200 million daily comic readers and millions of social media followers.

Garfield marks the latest new series pickup at Paramount+ by the streamer’s new post Skydance-Paramount merger team led by Cindy Holland, Paramount’s Chair of Direct-to-Consumer, and Paramount+‘s Head of Originals Jane Wiseman.

In the kids and family space, it joins the recently ordered animated series The Elephant & Piggie Show! and The Pigeon Show! Starring the Pigeon from Mo Willems’ Hidden Pigeon Company.

From Nickelodeon Animated Studios, Paramount+ has the upcoming film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, originally targeted for a theatrical release, and the 2D series Avatar: Seven Havens, ordered by Nickelodeon a year ago, both with Nick Animation banner Avatar Studios.

On the live-action side, over the last few months, Paramount+ has ordered legal drama Discretion starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, as well as limited series 9/12, headlined by Jeremy Strong, and Fear Not, starring Anne Hathaway. The streamer also formalized the pickup of Tulsa King spinoff Frisco King, toplined by Samuel L. Jackson, which had been in the works as NOLA King.

While original drama series is Paramount+’s focus on the live-action side, it plans to be opportunistic in unscripted, starting with the pickup this week of dating show Making Love. The streamer also has the upcoming four-part docuseries Made for March designed to complement CBS and Paramount+’s 2026 March Madness basketball coverage.

Morris has a history sharing the screen with a feline; his character on New Girl Winston Bishop was known for his close bond with his beloved cat, Ferguson.

An Emmy for his role on Season 5 of FX’s Fargo, Morris will next be seen starring opposite Nicolas Cage in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir and is currently in production on Jumanji 4. He also co-hosts The Lamorning After podcast with Kyle Shevrin and the New Girl rewatch podcast, The Mess Around, with former castmate Hannah Simone. Morris is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360 and Myman Greenspan.

Rumour: Disney XD To Become Disney Jr. In Poland

Since last year, Disney had begun reviving some of its linear operations in some parts of the world with the relaunch of Disney Jr. in the UK and Italy. Now it looks like Disney Junior will be widening it's reach as it's alleged to replace Disney XD in April.

As seen on the Polish website Naziemna, Disney XD's schedule has now been piled up with Disney Jr. programming like Marvel's Spidey And His Amazing Friends and Disney Jr's Ariel. While the rebrand has yet to be confirmed it wouldn't come as a shocker.

Disney XD's carriage has declined rapidly across the world as Disney was looking to consolidate most of its efforts under Disney+. This led not only to several Disney XD feeds from closing but that of Disney Channel and Disney Jr. as well.

Disney XD has been an afterthought for the company and moving aimlessly with very little content investment. This led the company to launch Disney Jr. in place of the brand as they continue to expand the slate of preschool content.

Disney XD's demise in Poland is inevitable at this point and it's closure would bring the end to the brand's international footprint. As this was the last remaining international market to offer Disney XD while others closed or folded under Disney Jr.

Unlike most feeds, Disney XD served as a joint venture between Disney and AMC Networks International and could continue operating under that structure with Disney Jr. As shows like Big City Greens and Gravity Falls move to Disney Channel.

Cartoon Network And Nickelodeon Under The Same Roof??? A Story For The Dark Ages

For decades, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon have been battling it out alongside Disney Channel to be the top kids brand. Now that's all about to end as Paramount emerged victorious in it's bidding war with Netflix with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Cartoon Network is home to Adventure Time, Ed Edd'n Eddy and The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy which were rejects from Nickelodeon. Now that's likely to be merged with Dora The Explorer, SpongeBob Squarepants and Rugrats.

Let's not forget, Cartoon Network's failed attempt rivalling with iCarly and Henry Danger with shows like Incredible Crew and Level Up. This merger now gives both brands the leverage over Disney Channel.

Nickelodeon's animation slate hasn't been stable in recent years with it's only successor in the 2010s being The Loud House. During this time, Cartoon Network had Regular Show, Adventure Time, Uncle Grandpa, Steven Universe and Teen Titans GO!.

With this merger still underway there's growing fear that Nickelodeon will no longer produce animation content moving forward. This is because Paramount let a majority of the brand's staff out of a job and there hasn't any word on new content.

Warner Bros. Discovery is no different on this matter but then again they are in a better position. Even though the latter is mainly existing IPs such as Tiny Toons Looniversity, Adventure Time: Side Quests, We Baby Bears and Batman: Caped Crusader.

Some people probably may not realise this but Nickelodeon was once formed part of a joint venture between Warner Communications and American Express alongside MTV. Due to financial constraints, it was sold to Viacom and formed MTV Networks.

In technicality, what we're witnessing here is basically a re-merger of some kind and Paramount is no stranger to that bit at all as it came out of a merger between Viacom and CBS.

Then again a lot is on the line, what does this deal mean for Nickelodeon on an animation standpoint? What becomes of Nicktoons, Nick Jr. and Cartoonito? Can Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network really function under one company?

If I'm being honest, the difference between the two is live-action as both are dominant in their respective fields so it's a safe bet that Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network will be retained. This is where most of the viewers and advertising revenue reside.

With Boomerang, Boing and Nicktoons basically being used for reruns that's likely to go away soon. The same outcome could await Cartoonito as Paramount doesn't have much animation in the pipeline compared to Warner Bros. Discovery.

Nick Jr. being the most recognisable brand compared to Cartoonito could serve as the new home to shows like Batwheels, Baby Looney Tunes, Hey BMO and Foster's Funtime For Imaginary Friend.

"Regular Show: Lost Tapes" Is Set To Premiere In May On Cartoon Network Across Europe And Possible Africa

We're getting closer and closer to returning to the beloved Park alongside Mordecai, Rigby, and the rest of the gang. Although there's still little concrete information about the mysterious revival of Regular Show—known in Latin America as Un show más and in Spain as Historias corrientes—we finally know that Cartoon Network is planning for its premiere to take place in May of this year.

The news came via the Hungarian outlet Mentrum, which specializes in cable television. In an article reviewing upcoming premieres on channels like Nickelodeon and Disney Channel, the site also included Cartoon Network, detailing that the new series Regular Show: Lost Tapes will arrive in May. Later, it reaffirmed the information on its Facebook page."

For now, the information corresponds to the CEE feed (Central and Eastern Europe), the signal broadcast in Hungary. However, if we take as precedent the recent international launch of the The Amazing World of Gumball revival—titled in Spanish El maravillosamente extraño mundo de Gumball—, which debuted in multiple territories on the same day, it wouldn't be surprising if we're looking at another globally coordinated premiere for the various Cartoon Network feeds, including Boing in Spain. This would also entail the global streaming launch of the series on HBO Max.

The exception could be Canada, where it was previously reported that Regular Show: Lost Tapes would premiere on Adult Swim. This is because the signals there are operated by Corus Entertainment and not directly by Warner Bros. Discovery. In fact, in that territory, the Gumball return airs on YTV instead of Cartoon Network.

It's speculated that the chosen date could be Friday, May 1st, coinciding with International Workers' Day—a not insignificant nod for a series centered around two rather particular employees—, though this has not yet been officially confirmed."

What still raises doubts is its broadcast in the United States. In recent years, Cartoon Network has significantly reduced its original production in that market, sharing time slots with Adult Swim and relying more and more on classic catalog titles and external acquisitions. In that context, the Gumball return premiered exclusively on the Hulu platform, without appearing on HBO Max or the linear channel.

Even so, it's worth noting that Regular Show has regained presence in Cartoon Network's linear programming globally, including the United States, Europe, and Latin America. In some markets, it even occupies more space in the schedule than more recent productions like Craig of the Creek, Teen Titans Go!, and We Baby Bears.

It should be clarified that, so far, the information has not been officially confirmed by Cartoon Network, HBO Max, or Warner Bros. Discovery. Therefore, these are preliminary data subject to possible changes in scheduling. As is usual in these cases, it will be necessary to wait for a formal announcement from the company to have certainties about the date and scope of the premiere.

Created by J. G. Quintel, the original series aired for eight seasons between 2010 and 2017 and had a television movie in 2015. The story follows Mordecai and Rigby, two gardeners expert at dodging responsibilities who turn the simplest tasks into monumental chaos. In the process, they drag their coworkers—Skips, Pops, Muscle Man, High Five Ghost—and their boss Benson into situations that escalate absurdly quickly: what starts as a regular shift can end in a zombie apocalypse, an interdimensional showdown, or outright the end of the world.

The franchise has also shown signs of revitalization outside of television. It recently had a collaboration with Fortnite, which incorporated playable skins of Mordecai and Skips, Rigby as a pet, and various cosmetics designed for fans. Additionally, the collectible brand Youtooz launched a series of figures of Mordecai, Rigby, and Skips inspired by iconic moments from the series. Likewise, Cartoon Network UK, the international arm of Cartoon Network, created an official Instagram account for the series.

Regular Show: Lost Tapes was announced in June 2024 during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival as a project in the early stages of development, though already greenlit. The subtitle “Lost Tapes” could allude to “lost” episodes or new stories set in the early years of the series. And there's a detail that fuels that theory: in the series finale, it's revealed that the entire show was contained on a VHS tape that Pops watches in the sky, a metanarrative device that today seems more relevant than ever. Like its predecessor, it is produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

It is not the only revival of a beloved Cartoon Network series on the way, as this year should also see the premieres of Adventure Time: Side Quests and Foster's Funtime for Imaginary Friends, inspired by Adventure Time and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

The Loud House Has Not Been Cancelled Nor Is Out Of The Woods Just Yet

During the past week, Kevin Sullivan who served as the show runner on The Loud House announced he was exiting Nickelodeon with the show set to conclude. According to him, there was not much work left on the network prompting his exit.

Since then, he retracted his statement and posted a new one which states The Loud House hasn't been picked up for further seasons nor has it been cancelled. And that he remains an active staff member at Nickelodeon.

Here's the thing, it had been alleged that Nickelodeon had fired a majority of its staff and kept the ones who manage shows like SpongeBob Squarepants and The Patrick Star Show.

Even after Kevin Sullivan's statement, there's still been news of staff members being let go at the brand. It's kind of hard for some to be convinced that The Loud House isn't over as yet.

They were reports that The Loud House got an 12th and 13th season renewal which was formerly going to be the 10th season. This was going to serve as the final seasons to the show.

The only way anyone can be convinced that The Loud House isn't ending would be if it got a 14th season. Let's be honest, neither Disney Channel or Nickelodeon acknowledge cancellations.

Prior to The Loud House, there was StuGO, Hailey's On It and Middlemost Post neither brand acknowledged these shows had ended. They let other sites announce it then rebuff those claims only for it to be confirmed at a later stage.

Kevin Sullivan was probably forced to retract his statement I can only be convinced that it's not getting cancelled if it were to be renewed for a 14th season.

It's likely that The Loud House is going through similar hoops as We Baby Bears where the network is just prolonging it's demise. As for The Loud House, the alleged 12th and 13th season isn't expected until 2027/8.
