The Evil Eye Returns With A New Supernatural Drama On Star Life

Star Life is set to rollout its first supernatural drama within the year titled The Evil Eye Returns following the controversial drama Evil Affairs in 2024 that was moved to late nights on the channel. Known as Jaadu Teri Nazar – Daayan Ka Mausam in India, it is meant to serve as a sequel series to The Evil Eye.

The series premiered on StarPlus on 18 February 2025 and since then over 100 half hour episodes had been released. It starred Khushi Dubey as Gauri Sharma Pratap Singh, Zayn Ibad Khan as Vihaan Pratap Singh alongside Daavansh, Monalisa as Mohana and Ayush Shrivastava as Harsh Pratap Singh.

While Star Life has yet to announce a date, The Evil Eye Returns will likely air within the 10PM CAT timeslot which is where a lot of supernatural shows reside. It being considered a spin-off or sequel to The Evil Eye may not prove to be controversial as Evil Affairs.

Synopsis for The Evil Eye Returns

A Daayan (witch) named Kaamini gives birth to a child fathered by Ravikant Pratap Singh and proclaims him as "Daavansh", the one who holds the key to her immortality. Meanwhile, a girl is born as a "Reevavanshi", the chosen one destined to destroy the Daavansh and the entire Daayan community. A wise woman (Prathamvanshi) from "Prathamvansh" prophesies that this girl will bring about their downfall.

Fearing for her daughter's safety, the girl's mother names her Gauri, strips her of her powers, and buries them, knowing they will return to her when the time is right. To protect Gauri from the Daayans, she entrusts her to the river, believing that divine forces will safeguard her. Enraged, Kaamini kills Gauri's parents.

Meanwhile, Ravikant invites Kaamini to meet their son, Vihaan, but his wife, Veena Pratap Singh, seizes the baby and escapes using magical crystals given by the Reevavanshis. In revenge, Kaamini kills Ravikant. However, Veena manages to trap Kaamini, turning her into a statue using the magical crystals. Before being petrified, Kaamini warns that her son, Vihaan, will inherit her powers and one day resurrect her. Veena raises Vihaan as her own, determined to protect him from his dark destiny.

For saving his family from the evil continuous haunts of Daayan, Vihaan forcefully marries Gauri. Sunehri an evil dayan knowing the truth of Gauri as a Rishwa, tries to kill her. But failed in her attempt. At a time Vihaan enslaved her and Gauri unknown of her powers kills Sunehri.

Cartoon Network Releases New Opening Title Sqequence And International Premiere Date For The Wonderfully Weird World Of Gumball

Cartoon Network has announced the international premiere date for its eagerly awaited original animated series The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball. Produced by Hanna-Barbara Studios Europe, the series will launch on Monday 6 October across EMEA, Latin America and APAC and on HBO Max (excl US). In recognition of this announcement, Cartoon Network has also unveiled the vibrant main title sequence, designed by acclaimed Jack Sachs – who also created the new logo.

Welcoming audiences back to Elmore – a place where the laws of reality are a joke and family life is anything but ordinary - The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball continues the surreal humour and wild storytelling of the multi- award winning The Amazing World of Gumball. Created and executive produced by Ben Bocquelet, this quarter-hour animated comedy series blends an eclectic mix of media styles – including 2D & 3D animation, CGI, puppetry, photorealism and live action – into a wildly imaginative world defined by its vibrant visual style and sharp meta humour.

Matt Layzell and Erik Fountain serve as Executive Producers and Series Directors. The Composer for the series is Xav Clarke and Joe Sparrow serves as Art Director. The stellar voice cast includes Alkaio Thiele as Gumball, Hero Hunter as Gumball’s younger brother Darwin, Kinza Syed Khan as younger sister Anais, Teresa Gallagher as his mother Nicole, and Dan Russell as his father Richard, and many more.

Ahead of this premiere, Cartoon Network will be celebrating all things Gumball over the summer by airing the very best moments of The Amazing World of Gumball every day. Starting in July audiences can rediscover the joy in the dysfunction of the Watterson family: Gumball, the dynamic and optimistic 12-year-old, his right-hand man, younger brother, and conscience, Darwin, the loveable stay-at-home Dad, Richard, the tireless overworked and yet resilient mum Nicole, and little sister and the smartest of the bunch Anais.

The Amazing World of Gumball is famed for its humorous depictions of the imperfect realities of growing up where everything ordinary becomes extraordinary. The animation was created in 2011 when Ben Bocquelet decided to take some rejected characters he had created for commercials and put them together in one series set inside of a school! Some of the characters in Elmore are based on Ben Bocquelet’s real family!

With self-referential and meta comedic roots from Monday 21 July* audiences can follow the misadventures of Gumball, Darwin and the other quirky residents of Elmore, including; Gumball and Darwin’s classmates Tina, the scary T Rex, with anger issues; Carrie the Emo dressing depressed ghost, and Banana Joe the class clown who laughs at everyone, their teachers Miss Simian whose been teaching second graders for 300,000 years, and Principal Brown a big furry “slug” in love with Miss Simian.

Paramount To Launch Nicktoons In France On July 15

Nicktoons France will be a localised version of Nickelodeon's Nicktoons channel, which brings viewers the most popular animated series and exclusive new animated shows produced by Nickelodeon, as well as acquired animated content.

NickToons will broadcast 24/7 and is a sub-feed of Nickelodeon's Nicktoons Global pan-regional feed, with a localised French language track. The channel, also known as Nicktoons France, will be operated by Paramount Networks Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia (EMEAA). The channel will launch with the broadcast of the Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : Légendes des Tortues Ninja episode "Splinter et April affontent un poisson rouge" ("Splinter and April Fight a Goldfish").

NickToons is set to replace Nickelodeon Teen (previously Nickelodeon 4Teen), Nickelodeon France's localised TeenNick channel for teens and tweens, which will closedown after 10 years of service at the end of the broadcast day on Monday 14th July 2025.

Nickelodeon channels in France can't abbreviate "Nickelodeon" to "Nick" due to domestic language policies, along with "Nick" sounding similar to a French profanity.

Recap To The Year: Guild Becomes New Home Of GINX TV For 25% Stake In Gaming Content Business

Guild Esports and Gaming has entered into a partnership agreement with GINX TV, a long-standing gaming video content, Digital, Web and TV broadcaster, that will see the company relocate all operations to Guild’s HQ, the Sky Guild Gaming Centre in Shoreditch, London, establishing a permanent live studio and gallery within the 15,000-square-foot venue.

The partnership will also provide an expansion of both businesses distribution network and provide opportunities for new, upcoming and established gaming creators to create and produce content.

Guild will collaborate with GINX TV to provide services and distribute content for partners, sponsors, and wider audiences. As part of the deal, rental of studio and office space will act as consideration for a convertible loan between Guild and GINX, equivalent to 25% ownership of GINX by Guild, if actioned.

The relocation of GINX TV from its previous home at Tileyard Studios in Kings Cross will take place immediately. This move further strengthens the position of Guild’s 15,000-square-foot HQ in Shoreditch, the Sky Guild Gaming Centre, as the UK’s premier gaming hub. This announcement comes just weeks after the launch of Drive Lounge at the same site, a public Sim Racing facility developed in partnership with Guild’s Sim Racing division, boasting 20 pro-level sim rigs and digital motorsport event space.

GINX TV, via its established linear/digital and social media distribution, provides its always-available live access to 20 million homes worldwide with over 35 million views of original content in 2024. Guild’s exclusively socially distributed content received 250m impressions across 2024. This partnership will see both parties be able to tap into learnings, audiences and networks to distribute partner content.

Nick Westwood, Chief Creative Officer of Guild Esports and Gaming, comments on the partnership:

“Following the first two years of our life as the Sky Guild Gaming Centre, where we welcomed thousands of guests across a variety of events, it was our desire this year to work with partners to fully maximise the space. With Drive Lounge, we have opened the doors to the public, and with GINX TV, we will now focus on utilising the venue to communicate outwardly to gamers through a variety of channels. We see a rapid shift in content distribution, both away from linear TV but also away from traditional ‘gaming’ channels to new, owned and operated channels. This partnership also provides our existing and future partners with turnkey broadcast solutions married to our turnkey esports and gaming venue offering, a real step forward for us, and GINX TV, as we build out propositions for brands, studios, streamers and publishers.”

Peter Einstein, Executive Chairman and CEO of GINX TV comments on the partnership:

“We are delighted to partner with Guild Esports and Gaming to create a strong and attractive engagement opportunity for brands to access the diverse gaming community. Our move to the Sky Guild Gaming Centre is a perfect way to collaborate and expand the gaming opportunity all under “one roof”. We are excited to bring our unique gaming and esports content publishing business to Shoreditch, where we will continue our provision of outstanding content to our international audience with the support of new partners.”

By leveraging the facilities and connectivity at the Sky Guild Gaming Centre, both organizations aim to drive innovation and expand their reach to global gaming audiences.

Canal+ To Launch Streaming Service MyCanal In Eastern Europe By The End Of 2026 Followed By Asia, Could It Replace DStv Stream And Showmax In Africa?

Canal+ is currently in the process of completing it's acquisition of MultiChoice after recieving a recommendation from the Competition Commission. Now the deal sits with the Competition Tribunal and Independent Communications Authority Of South Africa (ICASA) for further analysis.

Reports going around is that MyCanal which is basically international version of DStv Stream and rival to Pluto TV from Paramount Global is looking to launch in Eastern Europe by the end of 2026 with Asia likely to follow in the first half of 2027.

The app combines a package of live content, replay and subscription video on demand. In addition to Canal’s own original content, it has also aggregated the platforms of Netflix, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Paramount+, BeIN, Eurosport and Dailymotion.

MyCanal currently operates in Africa namely Ghana, Liberia, Rwanda and Niger basically regions in which it pay-tv service resides. What was interesting about this report is that it mentioned Canal+ plans to rollout MyCanal in regions in which it operates.

With Canal+ currently pursuing MultiChoice who own Showmax and DStv Stream with VIU also operating in South Africa these could as well be potential candidates for its streaming endeavours.

After acquiring Netherland's SPI International, FilmBox+ serves as European equivalent of MyCanal with K+ in Vietnam so the idea of Showmax and DStv Stream fitting under this umbrella wouldn't seem far fetched a stretch.

Following the relaunch of Showmax with NBCUniversal, MultiChoice had mentioned that the number of activations had increased which indicates that the streamer has plenty of scale. This is where DStv Stream lacks as it serves as a companion app to the DStv satellite.

Some consumers have felt that DStv had become expensive even with its OTT counterpart having reduced rates for its dishless consumers. With the price of DStv Premium, consumers can pay for 5 streaming services making DStv Stream a liability.

Merging Showmax and DStv Stream would make it easier to market rather than splitting consumers and alienating them from content. DStv has a batch of channels whose content is not on Showmax and vice versa - merging could reduce those expenses.

Integrating these services could face various delays one being licensing agreements which MultiChoice could have extended for several years. Another has to do with NBCUniversal as they retain 30% in Showmax preventing full integration.

Canal+ could buy back the shares but NBCUniversal could prioritize it's streaming endeavours or want more money as seen with Hulu.

Showmax has been viewed as a direct competitor to DStv so Canal+ could look to reduce its investment perhaps by selling more shares. They do have this whole thing going on with VIU and I'd imagine them keeping a percentage in Showmax in order to tap the rest of Africa which VIU remains nonexistent.

But if I'm being rational, they could as well look to merge the two that's what happened when WarnerMedia and Discovery merged. They removed a ton of content (mainly animation) from Max and focused on adult programming while licensing it's other content to rival platforms.

MultiChoice Opens Up Canal+'s Channels To More DStv Customers In Africa

Canal+ is currently in the process of completing it's acquisition of MultiChoice after recieving a recommendation from the Competition Commission. Now the deal sits with the Competition Tribunal and Independent Communications Authority Of South Africa (ICASA) for further analysis.

Amidst this endeavours, MultiChoice Africa (particularly Ghana) had decided to open up Canal+ Pop, Canal+ Cinema, Canal+ Action, Canal+ Sport 1, Nollywood TV, Novelas TV and A+ to DStv consumers from 19 June to 21 July.

For those who are unaware, MultiChoice and Canal+ have a bit of an overlap in certain African markets particularly Ghana, Liberia, Niger and Rwanda. In these markets, MultiChoice caters for English audiences and relied on Canal+ to serve the French as part of an add-on.

Think of DStv Indian and Portuguese packages in South Africa that's what Canal+'s offering comprise of within DStv. Of course, the reasoning of this transaction remains anonymous and if I had to guess it likely has to do Canal+'s ongoing transaction for MultiChoice.

If Canal+ is able to gobble up MultiChoice, I can imagine some of the local content seen on these brands particularly with A+ surface on Africa Magic. For sometime, Canal+ had been dubbing and distributing content from M-Net to audiences in Francophone Africa.

Sony Interested In Buying Warner Bros. Discovery After Split

Less than a week after Warner Bros. Discovery announced it was splitting into two separate companies, Sony is considering a purchase of WBD’s streaming and other assets.

Sources have told SEScoops that Sony is considering a purchase of the newly announced WBD Streaming and Studios company, which is expected to complete its separation from WBD Global Networks by mid-2026. Sony is interested in acquiring WBD’s HBO MAX streaming service, IPs and its gaming assets.

WBD announced on June 9 it was splitting the company, with most of the company’s $37 billion in debt attached to the WBD Global Networks, which include its vast number of cable channels, including CNN, TNT and TBS.

At the time the deal was announced, sources with knowledge of All-Elite Wrestling’s contract with WBD said no changes were expected with the company split.

Sony and Warner Bros. Discovery were working together to build a joint movie studio in Las Vegas this year. According to Variety, the proposal for the 31-acre facility ended on June 3 after the Nevada State Senate rejected a $95 million annual tax subsidy.

Sources said Sony was only interested acquiring WBD’s streaming, studio and gaming assets if they were separated from its cable networks, which have lost millions of homes as viewers abandon traditional cable packages.

David Zaslav, the current CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, is expected to take over WBD Streaming and Studios after the spin-off is complete in 2026. His status under a potential Sony purchase is unclear.

MultiChoice And SuperSport Aren't Threatened By Netflix And WWE Deal

Earlier in the year, WWE debuted on Netflix for consumers in US, UK and Canada as the streamer acquired exclusive rights to its flagship shows Raw, SmackDown and NXT alongside archived and premium live events. At the time, it was stated that Netflix would look to extend this to more markets.

In Africa, SuperSport held exclusive rights after its departure from e.tv in 2017 followed by another extension in 2022. At the time, SuperSport assured fans on DStv that it's rollout in some parts of the world wouldn't affect them.

During the week, MultiChoice unveiled their annual results for 31 March 2025 and within those documents MultiChoice addressed various topics one of which relate to WWE.

Since last year, various streaming platforms have started rivalling with SuperSport or as seen within this document YouTube + NFL and Amazon Prime Video + Prime Video Sport. MultiChoice in its defense highlights Premier League likely due to its tie-up to Showmax.

To us this is sort of signal to SuperSport's impending disaster firstly with Ethiopian Premier League and in future (2027/8), WWE. This deal with Netflix is a global deal worth R94 billion and in some markets like Africa there is hurdles to getting this to the platform.

SuperSport in losing WWE would leave AEW on TNT as the only wrestling promotion on DStv unless that's removed as well with Amazon Prime Video and DAZN snatching rights to the promotion in some markets.

Even if SuperSport were to relinquish rights of AEW from TNT fact is WWE has a dedicated channel and AEW doesn't have enough content for such. To top it off, AEW lacks in scale and familiarity compared to WWE even with the presence of Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho.

That's what happened when e.tv attempted to use TNA to replace WWE the latter changed timeslots numerous times and moved exclusively to Openview before folding under StarTimes. It's likely that SuperSport will streamline its efforts and focus on its remaining lineup.

Even if Netflix has WWE with YouTube having NFL fact of the matter is they can't replicate SuperSport's diverse offering as it's expensive.

NBCUniversal's Spinoff Company Versant Unveils It's Content Slate For 2025/6 Season

NBCUniversal’s spin-off company Versant has revealed its first programming slate, with 16 new titles in the pipeline for 2025/26 including new scripted originals for cablenets Syfy and USA Network and unscripted titles for E! and Oxygen True Crime.

USA Network ordered The Rainmaker, a legal drama from Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Television based on a John Grisham novel of the same name. The series follows a law school graduate who ends up uncovering two connected conspiracies surrounding the mysterious death of a client’s son.

Anna Pigeon, based on the bestselling novels by Nevada Barr, was also greenlit by USA Network. Produced by Cineflix Studios and December Films, the project follows a former city slicker who becomes a park ranger and turns her attentions to solving crimes that have taken place within national park grounds. Morwyn Brebner is showrunner.

USA Network also commissioned Everything On The Menu with Braun Strowman (WWE Studios and BrightNorth Studios), a culinary series following the WWE wrestler as he eats his way across America.

Syfy commissioned a zombie series based on comic series Revival, produced by Blue Ice Pictures and Hemmings Films. The project is set in a world where zombies are revived and appear and act just like they did before. The cast includes Melanie Scrofano, Romy Weltman, David James Elliott and Andy McQueen.

E! Commissioned unscripted titles Kimora: Back in the Fab Lane (Hartbeat), Plastic Surgery Rewind (Fulwell Entertainment), Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour (32 Flavors) and three instalments in a new franchise called Dirty Rotten Scandals focused on the dark side of America’s Next Top Model, the Dr Phil Show and The Price is Right.

Oxygen True Crime ordered The Death Investigator with Barbara Butcher (Wolf Entertainment), murder mystery series The Killer Among Us hosted by Alan Cumming, The Death Row Informant (Wolf Entertainment, Fireside Pictures, Universal Television Alternative Studios, Vanity Fair Studios), The Silent Serial Killer: Gretzler (Glass Entertainment), Killer Grannies (Jarrett Creative) and The Boston Stranglers (This is Just a Test).

Versant, set to be spun off from Comcast by the end of the year, consists of USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen True Crime, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel, in addition to digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow and SportsEngine. The programming team for the company was confirmed last week.

“Our audiences are among the most devoted in the industry, and their passion fuels everything we do,” said Versant’s president of entertainment Val Boreland. “By uniting the power of our iconic brands with a commitment to bold, original storytelling, we’re deepening our connection with viewers in meaningful ways. We’re proud to unveil this exciting new programming slate as we move forward under our new name.”

Cartoon Network Africa Acquires Broadcasting Rights To Pokémon: Indigo League, Rebroadcasts Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated And Batman: The Brave And The Bold

In a surprising move, Cartoon Network Africa will be allocating the first season of Pokémon: Indigo League from 30 June at 15:30 CAT. The problem part, neither Cartoon Network or Warner had marketed the show I mean they acquired Power Rangers Ninja Steel before Samurai and advertised both yet they're being hush about this.

The only other broadcaster to have aired this season at the time was the SABC so it's rather interesting that Cartoon Network Africa is getting more old content.

Another development that occured on Cartoon Network for some apparent reason is the sudden inclusion of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated and Batman: The Brave And The Bold. From my understanding, Boing had been airing the latter for sometime and now it's on Cartoon Network.

Batman airs a double bill on weeknights at 19:20 CAT while Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated also a double bill airs at 10:10 and 13:45. It should be noted that Pokémon (Indigo League) is also premiering as a double bill presuming they'll be airing more previous iterations.

I'd like to think similar to the US, they're probably acknowledging more of their older shows but then Discovery had been promoting shows amongst their other brands so it could be that. Warner and Discovery are undergoing a split by mid 2026 but I don't think that's the reason.

Maybe my previous sentiments about the channel acknowledging their older properties and although Boing is a channel in Africa. It is not seen on DStv so maybe Warner caught a drift of that which is why TNT has got a lot of animated DC films from Toonami - anyways it's nice to these shows on the network.

Synopsis for Pokémon: Indigo League

The series follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum, a 10-year-old aspiring Pokémon trainer from Pallet Town who is given a Pikachu by Pokémon researcher Professor Oak to begin his Pokémon journey. Ash is driven by his desire to win the Indigo Plateau's Pokémon League, a challenging tournament for outstanding Pokémon trainers who compete against each other in Pokémon battles. To qualify for the tournament, Ash must collect the required number of gym badges, which are tokens earned after defeating each of the Kanto region's elite Pokémon gym leaders. Early in the season, Ash befriends the water-type Pokémon trainer Misty, who initially travels with Ash in hopes of him replacing her destroyed bicycle, and Brock, a Pokémon breeder who is the leader of the Pewter City gym.

Is Toonami Africa Closing Soon???

Toonami is an action based animation channel home to content based from DC Comic characters such as Batman, Superman, Teen Titans and The Justice League. It had also distributed anime in one point with known figures such as Inazuma Eleven and Dragonball.

Since it's revival on StarTimes, Toonami had been repetitive state with very little new content outside of its DC films with its only notable show being Fire Force. Other than that, Toonami has been going the same route as other channels formerly in Africa such as EVA and Sony Channel.

In case anyone had been keeping tabs, Warner and Discovery are splitting up to some degree with this restructure set to be finalised by mid 2026. As we've seen with NBCUniversal's spinoff Versant, Warner Bros. Discovery is likely to close a few channels ahead of this transaction.

Cartoon Network and Cartoonito are set to fold under the Discovery umbrella and if I had to guess they'd likely want to streamline their efforts as they won't have much content from Warner Bros. to sustain them. This would put a brand like Toonami under scrutiny as a majority of its content comes from the mentioned brands.

The news of Toonami Africa demise wouldn't really come as a shocker as TNT had been distributing a batch of its films in recent years. Even Cartoon Network had begun to show interest in DC with Batman: The Brave And Bold and Teen Titans: Trouble In Tokyo.

Warner Bros. Discovery hasn't done much marketing for the network and as it stands Toonami has been mummified. At the moment, they only offer 5 shows 3 of which are centered on Batman with all the movies that were meant to build its primetime offering on TNT.

Africa is currently the last market to offer a dedicated channel for Toonami as France folded that under the Warner trademark. With its demise, this means that Toonami would be reduced to just a programming block in the US.

MultiChoice Looking To Unbundle SuperSport In A Not So Distant Future If Not Launch A DStv Premium Competitior

A few years ago, MultiChoice was experimenting with the possibility of unbundling SuperSport and the trail had since gone quiet. Now it looks like the company may be revisiting this within the next financial period April 2026 and prior to this is it's pending takeover by Canal+.

Recently it was reported that they are no longer insolvent due to the sale of NMIS Insurance Services but DStv consumers to be a loss maker there. If anything, this unbundled offering seems like a more likeable approach especially under French management.

MultiChoice said the initiative was still in its early stages and that it was still assessing the offering’s commercial impact and customer value.

But then again, Canal+ very much like Sky in the UK offers a standalone sports package which boasts about 9 sports channels for R720 a month. Some people may view this as a victory but in hindsight that is only for entertainment lovers.

DStv Flex which was earlier concept for this unbundled offering boasts over 60 channels ranging from general entertainment, news, cartoons and music. It comes with an option to bundle one of 3 sports packages alongside AddMovies.

This draft dates back to 2021 so rates are likely to be adjusted should this unbundled offering enter fruition. Of course, at the time MultiChoice was hesitant on offering sports as a standalone so if they do launch a sports package it will be expensive - cheaper with DStv Stream consumers.

The question MultiChoice has yet to address should this launch is whether this package will lead certain channels to close or if it will lead them to merging Compact+ and Premium. When or if it does launch, there's most likely going to be an uptake in the number of subscriptions from existing consumers.

Some would argue that even with this draft the rates are higher particularly those on Access and Easyview. It does lead you to wonder if the general entertainment package will have another price plan which prioritizes secondary brands like Mzansi Wethu.

If so then I'd imagine DStv Premium to Access undergoing a major overhaul with Easyview unscatched.

Discovery Channel Turns 40 Celebrating Four Decades of Awe, Adventure and Authenticity

Discovery Channel is celebrating a landmark moment in television history: 40 years of inspiring awe, igniting curiosity, and taking viewers on unforgettable journeys around the globe.

Seven Days of the Very Best of Discovery

A week of unmissable themed programming starts Monday, 16 June on Discovery Channel Africa, marking 40 years since the first US broadcast. Each day spotlights a signature feature that has defined the channel over the decades; From the grit and glory of GOLD on Monday, to the daring feats featured in EXTREME JOBS on Tuesday, the raw endurance of SURVIVAL stories on Wednesday, and the ingenuity of being OFF GRID on Thursday. Friday revs into high gear with TURBO, Saturday plunges into HISTORY AND MYSTERY, and Sunday culminates in ICONIC DOCS, including the premiere of DISCOVERY CHANGED MY LIFE, a moving tribute to real people worldwide whose lives and careers were inspired by Discovery Channel.

Discovery Changed My Life Series

Discovery Changed My Life is a powerful special featuring personal stories from pioneers around the world whose lives were transformed by Discovery’s content. Among them is South Africa’s Darren Britz, a wildlife filmmaker who recalls watching Discovery almost daily as a child, a habit that sparked his passion for wildlife storytelling. Also featured is Joshua Adayemi from Lagos, Nigeria, now based in Scotland, who founded the Black Scottish Adventurists to promote diversity in the outdoors, inspired by Discovery shows he watched on a neighbour’s TV. Marine biologist Dr. Alison Towner, originally from the UK and now based in Gansbaai, South Africa, has spent more than a decade working on Shark Week and is a fierce advocate for ocean and shark conservation. These compelling stories reflect Discovery’s global impact, inspiring curiosity, shaping careers, and changing lives across continents.

Four Decades of Discovery: A Timeline of Impact

Since its first broadcast in 1985, Discovery has grown from a niche documentary channel into a global icon of factual entertainment. From icy frontiers to deep oceans, remote cultures to cutting-edge science, Discovery Channel has consistently brought the wonders of the world into living rooms with unmatched authenticity and visual brilliance.

1985: The Dawn of Discovery

On June 17, 1985, media visionary John Hendricks launched Discovery Channel with just 12 hours of daily broadcasting and a mission to explore science, nature, culture, and history; The seeds of a global movement were planted.

Late 1980s–1990s: Growth, Diversification & Global Expansion

By the early 1990s, Discovery had begun to redefine factual television, expanding into technology, history, and adventure content. In 1995, the network dropped “The” from its name and introduced a coloured globe logo, symbolising its growing global ambitions.

In 1988, the channel debuted Shark Week, an annual celebration of ocean predators that became a pop culture phenomenon, attracting over 25 million viewers by 2024. The momentum continued with the launch of spin-off brands like Animal Planet, Discovery Kids, and Science Channel, as well as international rollouts.

In 1996, Discovery Channel launched in South Africa, cementing its footprint on the continent. Today, the channel broadcasts in over 220 countries and territories in 33 languages, reaching more than 2 million households across Africa alone.

Early 2000s: Reality Frontiers and Global Phenomena

The turn of the millennium brought a new era of genre-defining reality programming. From the animated Walking with Dinosaurs (2000) to breakout hits like American Chopper (2003), MythBusters, Deadliest Catch (2005), Planet Earth (2007), and Gold Rush (2012), Discovery struck the perfect balance between education and entertainment, redefining what factual TV could be.

Mid-2000s Onwards: Technology, Transformation and Localised Excellence

Always at the forefront of media evolution, Discovery embraced high-definition (HD) broadcasting as early as 2002. In 2009, it launched the Discovery HD Showcase on DStv’s HD platform, becoming the first international broadcaster to offer a fully HD channel in Southern Africa. This was followed by the 2014 HD launch of Discovery Channel South Africa, raising the bar for immersive viewing experiences.

Looking Ahead with Purpose: Collaborations, Social Initiatives, and Diverse Programming

Discovery Channel continues to push boundaries, expanding its digital presence, embracing new formats, and reaching broader audiences, without ever losing sight of its founding mission: to satisfy curiosity and inspire awe.

Now, as part of its 40th Anniversary celebrations, Discovery is embarking on another impactful partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant over 40,000 trees worldwide, including in Kenya. This initiative not only supports biodiversity but also contributes to healthier communities around the world.

Forty years in, Discovery Channel is still discovering, evolving, exploring, and inspiring new generations of curious minds. And for viewers in Africa and around the world, the next great adventure is only just beginning.

Tune in to Discovery Channel on DStv Channel 121 and Catch Up to celebrate #Discovery40.

Celebrating African Stories On Cartoonito On Youth Day

This Youth Day, Cartoonito celebrates the power of African stories, from homegrown songs and local voices sharing their passions, to fan-favourite Grizzy & the Lemmings landing in the African Savannah. As part of Cartoonito’s Youth Day celebration is Akissi, the pan-African animated special that captures the joy, mischief, and magic of childhood, voiced by none other than Johannesburg’s own Phophi Muleya.

At just 19 years old, Phophi brings fearless energy to the title character, a spirited Ivorian girl full of courage and charm. For her, Youth Day is more than a calendar date, it’s a reminder of what’s possible. “Youth Day reminds me that my voice, and every young person’s voice, matters,” she says.

“I’m living proof that creativity can open doors you never knew existed. From recording lines between classes to seeing my name in the credits of an international show, it’s been magical.”

A Journey Powered by Creativity & Courage

From student to screen star, Johannesburg’s Phophi Muleya brings heart and humour to Akissi, the story of a bold Ivorian girl navigating childhood with courage and curiosity, a perfect reflection of what Youth Day stands for.

“As a young person in South Africa, Youth Day is a reminder that I can push beyond any societal boundaries set for me or the youth,” Phophi explains. “There’s a lot we can learn from the youth of 1976. They proved that when we stand together, we can tackle the challenges that matter most to us as young people.”

She adds, “Voicing Akissi and seeing young Black African children feel seen on screen has been the most rewarding part of this journey. We’re a creative generation — and our stories are powerful tools for connection and change.”

From local songs and African stories to fan favourites, it’s all about homegrown fun this Youth Day

Grizzy and the Lemmings even goes local with two brand-new episodes premiering on Youth Day and every weekday from 17:05. This season returns with its signature slapstick formula rooted in classic silent comedy and cartoon rivalry. Grizzy and the Lemmings land in the African Savannah, where they clash over everything from comfy naps to loud parties and mouth-watering treats. In true “frenemy” fashion, their wild disputes often lead to clever compromises. This batch of episodes sees the Lemmings throwing mega dance parties, playing video games, and stirring up chaos with games like hide-n-seek and racket sports, all while encountering exclusive new characters including elephants, warthogs, ostriches, termites, and grasshoppers.

The full day’s line-up is packed with joy, music, and imagination, a celebration of African childhood in all its creativity and colour:

• Akissi – Join Akissi, the fearless Ivorian girl with a cheeky monkey sidekick, Boubou, as they take on hilarious adventures in a vibrant African city. Voiced by local talent, Phophi Muleya
• Cartoonito Tunes – A catchy, colourful sing-along playlist filled with tunes sung in isiZulu, isiXhosa, English, Pidgin English, and Swahili. It is a joyful celebration of the continent’s sounds
• My African Stories – Children from South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya share heartfelt slices of their daily lives, offering authentic glimpses into different African cultures
• CoComelon: It’s Cody Time – Join the gang on CoComelon Lane and sing and dance along to culturally relevant songs, including ‘Anansi Song’ and ‘African Melody Song’
• Grizzy & the Lemmings: Premiering at 17:05, the new season takes the hilarious rivalry to the African Savannah! Grizzy and the Lemmings discover new ways of turning situations to their advantage and continue fighting over yummy and loud parties. They also confront new dangers, exotic animals, experiment with unseen technologies, and don’t think twice about playing with magical items!

Tune In, Laugh Loud, Dream Big

“I hope every child watching Cartoonito on Youth Day feels proud of who they are and starts believing in what they can become. Our stories matter. Our voices matter,” concludes Phophi Muleya.

Join Cartoonito on Monday, 16 June from 08:00 for a magical Youth Day celebration bursting with local songs, local African stories and familiar characters reimagined in proudly African settings and discover just how far creativity can take Africa’s young dreamers.

NO LONGER INSOLVENT. MultiChoice Continues To Lose More DStv Subscribers From The Financial Year Ended 31 March 2025

MultiChoice, released its results for the year ended March 31, 2025, disclosed a loss of 2.8 million active linear subscribers in the past two financial years.

In the reporting period linear subscribers were down 1.2m, or 8%, to 14.5m active subscribers, with the loss evenly split between South African (0.6m) and Rest of Africa (0.6m). The group said although reflecting an improvement on 2024 trends, "this indicates ongoing broad-based pressure across the group’s entire customer base".

"The past two financial years have been a period of significant financial disruption for economies, corporates and consumers across sub-Saharan Africa due to challenging macro-economic factors. Combined with the impact of structural industry changes in video entertainment such as the rise of piracy, streaming services and social media, this has materially affected the overall performance of the MultiChoice Group," it said.

On a more positive note, active paying Showmax subscribers rose by 44% YoY, demonstrating strong growth and regional market share gains.

However, MultiChoice also faced financial headwinds in the form of a R10.2 billion impact from local currency depreciation against the US dollar.

The company’s adjusted core headline earnings, which reflect underlying business performance, swung to a loss of R0.8 billion from a profit of R1.3bn in 2024. This was mainly driven by reduced trading profit and hedging losses in 2025, which were in contrast to gains reported in the previous year.

Group revenue for the period fell by 9% to R50.8bn, primarily driven by an 11% decline in subscription revenues, which was partially offset by price increases and new product offerings, including DStv Internet, DStv Stream, and Extra Stream.

Profit Declines Amid Operational Efficiencies

Trading profit saw a sharp decline of 49% to R4bn. This downturn was largely attributed to a R2.3bn organic increase in Showmax’s trading losses and R5.2bn in foreign currency revenue losses. However, these losses were mitigated by the significant cost-saving measures implemented by management.

Free cash flow also turned negative, with an outflow of R0.5bn in 2025, compared to an inflow of R0.6bn in 2024. The cash flow was negatively impacted by lower profitability and higher lease repayments, though it was partially offset by improved working capital management and a 29% year on year reduction in capital expenditure.

In the face of financial disruption the company said it kept a focus on inflationary pricing discipline. In South Africa, price increases were maintained at 5.7% for 2025 (up from 5.6% in 2024), while in the Rest of Africa, local currency price hikes averaged 31%, compared to 27% in the previous financial year. These price adjustments allowed the group to weather subscriber volume declines and achieve a modest 1% year-on-year organic revenue growth for the period.

Further operational efficiencies also helped offset financial pressures, with the group achieving R3.7bn in cost savings - substantially exceeding its initial target of R2bn, and nearly double the R1.9bn saved in 2024. Despite these savings, the group reported a 9% decline in organic trading profit, largely due to increased operating costs related to Showmax during its peak investment year.

"Importantly, the group returned to a positive equity position through a combination of cost savings, a stabilisation in currencies, and the accounting gain on the sale of 60% of the group’s shareholding in its insurance business (NMSIS) to Sanlam," it said.

No dividend was declared while the group is subject to takeover by French firm Canal+. The proposed transaction still needs the approval of the Competition Tribunal to go ahead.

Looking ahead, MultiChoice said it aims to stabilise the topline in the video businesses through focused retention initiatives, while supporting rapid topline growth in the group’s interactive entertainment, fintech and insurance investees. Secondly, management will continue to drive operating, cost and working capital efficiencies into the group to protect profitability and cash flows. Finally, the group will continue to work with Canal+ towards a successful close of their mandatory offer in order to unlock significant long-term benefits for the combined entities and the irrespective stakeholders.

Channel Closure: SuperSport Liyu Goes Dark On June 30th On DStv In Ethiopia

For those who haven't heard, SuperSport had opted not to distribute the Ethiopian Premier League after signing a 5 year deal in 2020. As a result, SuperSport Liyu will stop being distributed on the DStv platform by 30 June.

From what I recall, SuperSport Liyu was a football channel or the Amharic equivalent of SuperSport Football offering Premier League and La Liga. With the channel taking the plunge, it's not really known whether the latter will be distributed in Amharic on other SuperSport channels.

MultiChoice which serves as the holder of SuperSport has been dealing with financial constraints and are now relying on them to get of this stigma. Earlier in the year, Canal+ did close its pay-tv operations in the regions so whose to say what's going to happen now under the merged company.

Prior to Liyu's closure, MultiChoice had suddenly put up a test card for the channel onto its transponders in Southern Africa. So either plans were underway to do some open window (which I doubt) or MultiChoice is experimenting on another TV channel with its frequencies.

It's not known if this channel will be carried in other parts of Africa, what content may come out of this or if this channel will ever be launched as seen with Via's duplicate channel.

A statement from the general manager of EPN

Speaking on the matter, the league’s general manager Kifele Seyife said SuperSport have already ended its partnership. “DSTV had a rocky financial year at South Africa. They have ended the deal with us. They have already paid their last installment of the season.”

SuperSport has showcased few league games this season so far. Pan-Africa Football understands only sixty league games will be shown live on TV this season. The league and SuperSport failed to negotiate a new deal after DSTV owner Multichoice sold many of its shares to French company Canal Plus.

The league has now shifted their focus on securing a new broadcaster. National broadcaster Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation has shown interest and the league is also weighing an option to stream live games on EthioTele’s Tele TV.

Development Alert: Bloedspoor Rolls Out On eExtra With Doodloopstraat And Voelvry Moving To New Timeslots

In a not so surprising move, eMedia Investments will be reviving it's 10PM primetime slot on eExtra as the broadcaster allocates Bloedspoor. Following its rollout on eVOD, Bloedspoor (Yargi) will be launching on the channel from June 16th at 9PM with Doodloopstraat at 10PM.

This means reruns of Voëlvry will go head to with Ramo (which is on e.tv) at 23:00 leaving the Bollywood reruns to air at midnight.

Bloedspoor unfolds love stories among lawyers and judges, adding a layer of emotion to the intense courtroom drama. The series starts when Ilgaz (Kaan Urgancıoğlu), a respected public prosecutor, and Ceylin (Pınar Deniz), a young attorney, cross paths due to a murder case, and are forced to work together in order to uncover the real culprit behind the event that caused irreversible changes in both of their lives.

Kaan Urgancıoğlu has made appearances in other shows such as Bittersoet which had been broadcast on eExtra while Pinar Deniz had been seen in The Red Room which was picked up by SABC 3. Other stars to join the new series include Uğur Polat, Uğur Aslan, Hüseyin Avni Danyal and Mehmet Yılmaz Ak.

Named the Best Telenovela at the 51st International Emmy Awards in New York City in 2023 filming for Bloedspoor wrapped up earlier in the year after three seasons. Ay Yapım that served as the production company for Bloedspoor offered Fenix, Voëlvry and Impak the latter which was licensed by eMedia Investments.

Warner Bros. Discovery To Spin-Off Cartoon Network, TNT And Food Network Into A Separate Company, Retains HBO Max And Studios

Warner Bros. Discovery today announced plans to separate the company, in a tax-free transaction, into two publicly traded companies, enabling each to maximize its potential. The Streaming & Studios company will consist of Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max, as well as their legendary film and television libraries. Global Networks will include premier entertainment, sports and news television brands around the world including CNN, Cartoon Network, TNT, Food Network, Discovery Channel, and digital products such as the profitable Discovery+ streaming service and Bleacher Report (B/R).

David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, will serve as President and CEO of Streaming & Studios. Gunnar Wiedenfels, CFO of Warner Bros. Discovery, will serve as President and CEO of Global Networks. Both will continue in their present roles at WBD until the separation.

"The cultural significance of this great company and the impactful stories it has brought to life for more than a century have touched countless people all over the world. It's a treasured legacy we will proudly continue in this next chapter of our celebrated history," said Zaslav. "By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape."

"This separation will invigorate each company by enabling them to leverage their strengths and specific financial profiles. This will also allow each company to pursue important investment opportunities and drive shareholder value," said Wiedenfels. "At Global Networks, we will focus on further identifying innovative ways to work with distribution partners to create value for both linear and streaming viewers globally while maximizing our network assets and driving free cash flow."

"We committed to shareholders to identify the best strategy to realize the full value of our exciting portfolio of assets, and the Board believes this transaction is a great outcome for WBD shareholders," added Samuel A. Di Piazza, Jr., Chair of the Warner Bros. Discovery Board of Directors. "This announcement reflects the Board's ongoing efforts to evaluate and pursue opportunities that enhance shareholder value."

Streaming & Studios

With best-in-class creative capabilities and an unmatched library of beloved IP, Streaming & Studios will be one of the world's greatest storytelling companies. The company will be comprised of Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max (including its international sports offering), Warner Bros. Games, Tours, Retail and Experiences, as well as studio production facilities in Burbank and Leavesden. Streaming & Studios will have dynamic and sustainable revenue, profit and free cash flow growth. The company will focus on continuing to scale HBO Max, which is now in 77 markets with important new market launches planned for 2026, and build on its global momentum, investing in HBO's world-class programming which differentiates and drives the platform, and prioritizing the operating principles that have put the Studios on a path back to their target of at least $3 billion in annual adjusted EBITDA.

Global Networks

Global Networks will encompass a powerful and preeminent global portfolio of entertainment, sports and news television networks and brands as well as their digital products. Today, these assets reach 1.1 billion unique viewers in 68 languages across 200 countries and territories, while operating with industry-leading margins and robust free cash flow conversion. As a worldwide leader in live television, Global Networks will have the expertise, reach and ongoing financial profile to pursue opportunities such as investing in international growth opportunities, elevating its live content offerings in sports and news, and growing digital extensions of its strong network brands, such as Discovery+, B/R, and CNN's new streaming offering.

Transaction Details, Capital Structure and Timing

Warner Bros. Discovery intends to separate the businesses in a tax-free manner for U.S. federal income tax purposes. The companies plan to implement arm's length transition services and commercial agreements post-separation to facilitate the transition and maintain continued operational efficiencies.

Each company will have well-capitalized structures to support their businesses. In a separate press release today, Warner Bros. Discovery announced the commencement of tender offers and related consent solicitations across its existing capital structure to enhance its debt portfolio, which will be funded by a committed bridge facility of $17.5 billion provided by J.P. Morgan. The bridge facility is expected to be refinanced prior to the separation. Both companies will have a clear path to de-leveraging with significant cash flow and strong liquidity through cash and revolver availability. In addition, Global Networks will hold up to a 20% retained stake in Streaming & Studios that it will plan to monetize in a tax-efficient manner to enhance the de-leveraging of its balance sheet.

The separation is expected to be completed by mid-2026, subject to closing and other conditions, including final approval by the Warner Bros. Discovery Board, receipt of tax opinions and/or a private letter ruling from the Internal Revenue Service with respect to the tax-free nature of the transaction for U.S. federal income tax purposes, and market conditions.

J.P. Morgan and Evercore are serving as financial advisors to Warner Bros. Discovery and Kirkland & Ellis LLP is serving as legal counsel.

Canal+ And MultiChoice Deal Set To Appear In Front Of The Competition Tribunal Before The End Of July + More

In South Africa, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Canal+ said he was awaiting "a final decision," which will be made via the South African Competition Tribunal, after receiving a "positive opinion" from the South African Competition Commission in May.

Maxime Saada reported a hearing scheduled in this regard "before the end of July." "This chapter is moving very quickly," he concluded.

The Chairman of the Board discussed the preparations underway to anticipate what comes next and identify "the operational model of the future company" and the distribution of "responsibilities," so that "the day after the transaction closes, everyone knows what their responsibilities will be."

CRUCIAL ACQUISITION

This transaction is all the more crucial for Canal+ as it should enable it to boost its share price, which has plummeted since its listing on the London Stock Exchange in December, following the spin-off from its former parent company, Vivendi.

"It will be very important to complete the transaction with MultiChoice," Yannick Bolloré responded to a question from an individual shareholder about this "disappointing" stock market performance.

"The few investors I've met have all talked to me about the MultiChoice deal," added Yannick Bolloré, believing the acquisition could be "a catalyst for acceleration" (sic).

The Chairman of the Supervisory Board also reiterated, as he did at Vivendi's shareholders' meeting (where he holds the same position) in April, that it would take "time to make ourselves known" to investors.

TAX DISPUTES

The audiovisual group Canal+ also announced on Friday that it had reached an agreement with the French National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC) regarding a tax dispute.

Canal+ stated in a press release published shortly before its shareholders' meeting that it had "put an end to the disputes" and thus removed "the uncertainty regarding the possibility of significant additional disbursements."

The CNC and Canal+ disagreed over the television services tax (TST) owed by the group and collected by the public body.

Canal+'s Chief Financial Officer, Amandine Ferré, clarified that the €44 million requested by the CNC for the 2020 and 2021 fiscal years had been canceled, and that the group was also "protected from claims" from the public institution for nearly €50 million for 2022 and 2023, "for a total of €90 million."

"The cash impact [of the agreement] is therefore neutral," the Chief Financial Officer concluded.

However, Canal+'s dispute with the tax authorities regarding the VAT it owes to the State is still ongoing, Canal+ stated. Amandine Ferré affirmed that she is "actively engaging with the tax authorities to find a solution as quickly as possible."
