Could E! Entertainment Be A Thing Of The Past?

E! Entertainment is a celebrity based entertainment channel owned by NBCUniversal that has mainly been used for glitz and glamour or in other words takes you on a trip to Hollywood through red carpets and interviews with their notable title being The Kardashians.

As seen these past months or in other people's perspective last year, NBCUniversal has been cutting back on original content for their channels and E! Entertainment happened to be one of those last remaining channels internationally.

As it is DreamWorks Channel is more like PBS Kids as content is funded by third parties, there's not much changes coming to Studio Universal but when you turn to Universal TV they were more like CBS Reality pitching for new content now they're the slums like BET.

E! Entertainment has lost out on several originals like Keeping Up With The Kardashians, E! News, The Soup and Daily Pop. At the time, not a lot of people knew how far NBCUniversal would go in this layoffs that was until they were reports of the channel closing in some parts of Europe.

I don't know whether this will happen in other countries as NBCUniversal has been eyeing strategic purposes in the phasing out of the E! brand but from what is known so far would the idea be far fetched.

In Africa, E! Entertainment has been adding content from NBCUniversal's Bravo channel. Overseas this two have been operating on seperate grounds but in this region they're working hand-to-hand.

And I'm not saying that E! Entertainment will turn into Bravo but the idea of what's happening in Africa possibly being the outcome overseas wouldn't be shocking I mean Days Of Our Lives is heading to streaming and NBC closed their sports channel.

Don't be surprised if there was an announcement that E! Entertainment would be closing down with further content being divided amongst their brands, Bravo.

Bravo would make a great successor I mean there's a lot the channel can do that celebrity based E! Entertainment had restricted. The channel hasn't gotten that far in terms of popularity but with the right tooling they can get ahead.

Bravo is currently positioned in a similar form to MTV and with E! Entertainment supplying various shows from the brand. They might as well source content from Oxygen since it's also female driven and from what I can make out with this combo you're basically getting Lifetime.

Lifetime was one of my least favourite channels I usually watch it for the documentaries and crime hours. Should Bravo eventually rear it's face one of my expectations is that it could fill the void left by this channel from A+E Networks.

Tutankhamun’s Tomb 100th Anniversary Commemorated With Premiere Programming

King Tutankhamen, or King Tut as he is more commonly known today, was relatively unknown to the world until 1922, when his tomb was discovered by Howard Carter. Now, 100 years later, this unprecedented historic discovery will be commemorated with the premiere of Tut’s Toxic Tomb on National Geographic (DStv 181, Starsat 220) on Fridays at 19:00 (CAT), from 18 November 2022, as well as with fascinating library programming exploring various facets of the renowned pharoah’s life.

On 26th November 1922, Howard Carter made what was dubbed as the greatest archaeological find of all time – entering the treasure-filled tomb of the Egyptian boy king Tutankhamun. Tutankhamun’s tomb contained thousands of artifacts, a sarcophagus containing his mummy, and a now-famous headdress. It took Carter and his team almost ten years to catalogue the contents of the tomb. The over five thousand artifacts and well-preserved mummies found in the tomb have since brought new insights into life in ancient Egypt and the astounding governance of the boy who became king.

The news lit up the world. But when people who entered the tomb began dying, tales of a “pharaoh’s curse” spread. Were the deaths just coincidences or stories created to sell newspapers? And can modern science explain the truth behind the legend?

In the two-part Tut’s Toxic Tomb series, paleoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi begins to unravel the extraordinary, scientific truth behind the legend and dives deeper into the mystery behind the Tutankhamun curse story. Exploring potential toxins inside the tomb and on some of the artefacts, she questions whether science can help explain some of the deaths that were linked to the tomb. On her journey, she shines fresh light on this global legend and reveals the greater legacy of Howard Carter’s discovery.

Additionally, viewers can enjoy King Tut In Color (4 November at 19:00) in which the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb is revealed for the first time in colour, thanks to colourisation of black-and-white newsreel and photographs.

In Tut's Treasures: Hidden Secrets (11 November at 19:00), follow how Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 made headlines across the world, sparking a global frenzy for ancient Egypt. Watch as the boy-king's 5,398 priceless objects are being reunited for the first time.

We’ve used the M-Net model in conceptualising and branding the channels – the look and feel are inspired by the "mother brand", Novela Magic. We trust that viewers will be pleased with the channels and their offerings once they go live.”

In order to make way for these two brand-new exciting channels, Novela Magic will be closing as of 27 November in South Africa but will remain in the rest of Africa.

To borrow from Magic Showcase’s tagline, the content slate on DStv EasyView continues to be "every bit of magic".

Why Impact Wrestling Is No Longer On Your Screens Or At Least Not With Openview?

WWE was ripped off from viewer's screens several years ago and found its way onto SuperSport. At the time, eMedia Investments wasn't quick to source a replacement and relied solely on the existing international offering to fill the gap left by the wrestling brand.

It wasn't long till there was an announcement eMedia Investments acquired broadcasting rights to Impact Wrestling. The rights which was formerly held by SuperSport so in a way they kind of did a switcheroo kind of like that time with Lotto and Powerball.

Now if we have to go over Impacts time on e.tv here's how to summarise it, the show didn't form part of the monthly TAMS as seen with WWE in the past and the audience in question weren't as welcoming of Impact as they were with WWE which kind of spells trouble.

As seen overseas, Impact Wrestling is no longer in the big leagues as existing competitors such as AEW and WWE. Most of its reason for living has to do with its history as TNA! Impact.

And I don't want to speculate but could it be possible that SuperSport severed ties with this wrestling promotion as viewers weren't so welcoming of it as the years went by. This trait quickly began to adapt following it's move to e.tv.

Impact Wrestling has been facing several challenges during its time on e.tv as rival brands like the SABC often broadcast soccer in the middle of wrestling and you know how much the sport is loved point made this wasn't much of an issue with WWE.

As for the removal on e.tv, all I can say is eReality will continue to offer Impact Wrestling alongside it's extended library but as for the state of the wrestling promotion. Is it possible that the same outcome awaits consumers on the Openview platform?

Chris Farley: A List Of Unfinished Projects By Former Actor And Comedian

This week, we turn our attention to Chris Farley, the beloved comedy actor who took Second City, Saturday Night Live, and the movie industry by storm before dying a tragic death at the hands of drugs at the age of 33 in 1997. Throughout his career, Farley was tied to some pretty big movie projects that he didn’t get to follow through on, including starring in a sunnier version of The Cable Guy, portraying Ignatius J. Reilly in the “cursed” movie version of the novel A Confederacy of Dunces, and voicing the titular talking ogre in Shrek.  It’s heartbreaking that Chris Farley was taken from us when he was so young, but by examining the projects he was working on just prior to his death, we can get a feel for where his career might have taken him, had tragedy not struck.

The Cable Guy (1996)

The role: The Cable Guy

Who got it: Jim Carrey

Chris Farley had a two-picture deal with Paramount that was about to run out by the time Tommy Boy was released in 1995 and became a surprise hit. With the contract close to ending, it sent the studio scrambling to get him in another movie. Farley and his representatives had just sold The Cable Guy to another studio with him attached to the lead role, but the folks at Paramount rushed a script for Black Sheep, which would once again pair him with David Spade, into development in hopes of scoring another hit. The studio had a script written and put the movie together quickly, which made it so Farley would have to turn down The Cable Guy. Simultaneously, the Cable Guy script got sent to Jim Carrey – who was on top of the world in 1995 with a recent string of hits under his belt – leading the other studio to lose interest in Farley. Carrey, Ben Stiller, and Judd Apatow were brought on to work on The Cable Guy and turned it into a dark comedy, which is very different from what the Farley version would have been.

Kingpin (1996)

The role: Ishmael

Who got it: Randy Quaid

Doug Robinson, Chris Farley’s agent, recalls in Tom Farley’s biography The Chris Farley Show that Farley was being considered to play Ishmael the Amish kid in the Farrelly Brothers’ bowling comedy Kingpin. Unfortunately, Farley’s deal with Paramount and the resulting production of Black Sheep forced him away from this project too.

BASEketball (1998)

The role: Joe Cooper

Who got it: Trey Parker

Farley turned down the lead role in David Zucker’s sports comedy BASEketball, according to Brian Cogan’s book Deconstructing South Park. After Farley passed on the project, Zucker went to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, whose show South Park had just become a major hit. Parker and Stone asked that the script be rewritten to reflect their raunchier sensibilities and the duo had a lot of input on the movie’s writing process, which made it very different from what the Chris Farley version of BASEketball would have been.

Shrek (2001)

The role: Shrek

Who got it: Mike Myers

Chris Farley was hired to voice the ogre Shrek in the childrens’ movie of the same name in 1997. In The Chris Farley Show, Shrek writer Terry Rossio recalls, “For me, Chris’s comedic person was key to the creation of the Shrek character – a guy who rejected the world because the world rejected him.” This early version of Shrek was much different from the one we know now. According to a Jim Hill Media piece, “It was about a teenage ogre who wasn’t all that eager to go into the family business. You see, young Shrek didn’t really want to frighten people. He longed to make friends, help people. This ogre actually dreamed of becoming a knight.” Everyone involved in the film speaks fondly Farley’s recording sessions for Shrek, calling it one of his greatest performances. Rossio remembers, “The recording sessions were essentially everyone in the booth rolling off our chairs onto the floor, laughing our asses off.” Director Andrew Adamson said about the sessions:

“It didn’t make the final film, but at one stage there was a moment in the script where Shrek was walking along, singing ‘Feeling Groovy,’ Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Fifty-ninth Street Bridge’ song. Chris was just so into it. When we were recording, I kind of got the impression that he wasn’t sure whether he was supposed to be doing a comedic take on the song or a sincere, heartfelt one. He was singing and putting himself out there in a way that was very touching. It made me see the longing in him to do something more genuine with his career. It made me feel bad, because we were in fact asking for a ‘funny’ version. But that he was willing to give it to us, even though he was so vulnerable about it, made it a very sad and touching moment.”

Chris Farley had finished 80-90% of his recording sessions at the time of his death (or 95%, according to his brother Tom), working up until a week prior to his passing. There was talk of having a Farley impersonator record the last portions but that plan was scrapped. Adamson recalls, “We spent almost a year banging our heads against the wall until Mike Myers was able to come onboard. Chris’s Shrek and Mike’s Shrek are really two completely different characters, as much as Chris and Mike are two completely different people.” Myers asked that the script be completely rewritten so that he wouldn’t be starring in the Chris Farley version of the film. After recording a good chunk of his dialogue, Myers decided he wanted to re-record it in a Scottish accent, which cost the studio $4-5 million to re-animate Shrek’s lip sync and other expenses, but it proved to be worth it and DreamWorks made that money back hundreds of times over.

The Superfans movie (unfilmed)

The role: Todd O’Connor

In the wake of Wayne’s World becoming a surprise blockbuster, Hollywood started greenlighting SNL movies right and left, hoping to find the next Wayne’s World. Robert Smigel left his job as Conan O’Brien’s head writer in 1994 to pen a movie version of the “Bill Swerski’s Superfans” sketches, which starred Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Smigel, and guest George Wendt as a quartet of Chicago sports fans who popularized the catchphrase “Da Bears.” Bob Odenkirk served as Smigel’s co-writer on the movie, which, according to an A.V. Club interview with Smigel, followed the Superfans coming into conflict with a businessman with no appreciation of sports who buys the Bears’ stadium and turns it into a luxury stadium for the rich. Smigel and Odenkirk were eyeing Martin Short to play the businessman, named Burton Kimkington. After a scathing review of SNL’s 94-95 season in New York magazine, NBC put a stop to the development of all SNL spin-off movies. Another major roadblock in the way of the film was that, after Tommy Boy hit, Chris Farley’s representatives didn’t want him starring in an ensemble comedy.

Ghostbusters III: Hellbent (unfilmed)

Dan Aykroyd originally wrote the script for the third Ghostbusters movie (an updated version of which is still in development) in the mid-90s. The plot for Ghostbusters III: Hellbent concerned our favorite paranormal exterminators being transported into a version of Hell that resembles Manhattan. The idea was later used in a recent Ghostbusters video game. The movie also called for the Ghostbusters to pass the torch to a new generation. In a recent interview, Ghostbusters writer and star Harold Ramis explained, “Here’s how old the rumors are: Chris Farley was one of the rumors. It was going to be Chris Farley, Ben Stiller and Chris Rock.”

Atuk (unfilmed)

The role: Atuk

Famous for being a cursed movie in Hollywood, Atuk was writer Tod Carroll’s adaptation of Canadian author Mordecai Richler’s book The Incomporable Atuk, which told the story of an Eskimo warrior struggling to adapt to life in New York. According to The LA Times, the project passed through the hands of John Belushi, Sam Kinison, John Candy, and Chris Farley, with all of them dying tragic deaths shortly after reading the script. The Times reports that Farley was about to accept the role at the time of his death. Tod Carroll says he doesn’t believe these curse rumors because, you know, curses are silly.

A Confederacy of Dunces (unfilmed)

The role: Ignatius J. Reilly

Another “cursed” project, the movie adaptation of John Kennedy Toole’s novel A Confederacy of Dunces has been in development since the early ‘80s, with many of the people who almost starred in Atuk (see above) also being attached to this one too before dying tragically young (or surviving). According to Slate, John Belushi was about to sign on to star for director Harold Ramis when he died, and John Candy and Chris Farley were each considered for the part before passing away. Confederacy of Dunces almost got made with Will Ferrell starring and David Gordon Green directing in 2005, but the project was shut down for mysterious reasons and everyone survived. Now, it looks like Zach Galifianakis is the latest person to be cast in the role, but don’t expect to see this movie hit theaters anytime soon, as it’ll probably take another 30 years to actually get made.

A Fatty Arbuckle biopic (unfilmed)

The role: Fatty Arbuckle

In 1997, Chris Farley began planning his first dramatic film, a biopic about silent film star Fatty Arbuckle, a heavyset actor who was falsely accused of manslaughter and rape in a highly-publicized trial before dying young of a heart attack. Farley met with playwright David Mamet, who agreed to write the movie. Farley’s manager Bernie Brillstein remembers meeting with Mamet in The Chris Farley Show:

“Chris came to the meeting at a little restaurant down in the Village, and he was the good Chris, the well-behaved Chris, because he couldn’t believe that David Mamet even wanted to meet him. Mamet loved him. It was a great meeting. He said yes before we got up from the table, and he wrote it for Chris. To this day, I know that it would have changed his career.”

Farley’s brother Tom remembers, “As soon as he heard little bits and pieces about Arbuckle’s life, he said, ‘This is me.’ It was the whole idea that nobody understands the real person underneath. ‘I’m going to tell them about the real Fatty Arbuckle, and maybe they’ll understand the real Chris Farley.’” The project got slowed down by Hollywood’s sluggish development process and, sadly, never came together before Chris Farley passed away.

Possibly On Autopilot: Nicktoons UK Has Been Reduced To Just 3 Shows From November

For several months, Nicktoons has been reduced to what appears to be waste as Paramount seems to have isolated the channel from reality by funneling the schedule with several cancelled shows such as Lego City Adventures, Horrid Henry and The Casagrandes.

NickMusic seems to be the only active as mentioned but having it on a brand such as Nicktoons seems to wreak of embarassment seeing as the channel has become the Disney XD of 2022 - redundant, out of tune and currently clinging onto life support.

But it seems as if that may not be the only Nicktoons to seem obsolete at this point apparently our neighbours in the UK & Ireland are undergoing a similar procedure with the brand.

In September, the channel was temporarily known as Nick SpongeBob consisting of shows SpongeBob SquarePants and The Patrick Star with Nick Horrid Henry to follow during the month of October now in November it returns to "normal viewing".

It was reported that another pop-up channel consisting of The Loud House and Horrid Henry was scheduled for a November release but was inevitably scrapped as the channel was said to return to normal viewing but there's nothing normal about it all.

From November, 3 of the regions most popular shows SpongeBob SquarePants, The Loud House and Horrid Henry will air as follows:

06:00 - 12:00 The Loud House
12:00 - 17:00 SpongeBob SquarePants
17:00 - 18:00 The Loud House
18:00 - 20:00 Horrid Henry
20:00 - 06:00 SpongeBob SquarePants

For those who aren't familiar with this format, Paramount often used Nicktoons and Nick Jr. (as seen earlier this month) as pop-ups for a while now but not all regions were fortunate to bask in those festivities.

During the year, Paramount opted to become a distributor for several of Nickelodeon's series and movies and with that in mind scrapped the Asian feed of Nickelodeon while as Canada which once offered a digital service with Corus Entertainment also got the boot.

Nicktoons in the UK possibly joining this pack wouldn't be far fetched a stretch I mean the region had already lost several channels from Lifetime to Disney XD and FOX all of which were for streamlining endeavours and it's not like the channel had much original/first run content.

Interesting to note is the African feed was likely based off the UK and Latin America for their use of Horrid Henry and NickMusic. I mean why else would Nickelodeon pick up the series to begin with and NickMusic replaced Nicktoons while here it's a half hour series - coincidence.

Roundups #106: Rihanna To Make Her Comeback To The Music Industry In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Monster High: The Sequel In Development At Nickelodeon And A Script For A Second Season To Telemundo's The End Of Paradise Is Said To Be In Development

Rihanna to release a new single dedicated to Chadwick Boseman

Apparently the rumors are true: Rihanna is back with new music thanks to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Rihanna is releasing two songs for the movie, which both show up in the end credits. The first song is called “Lift Me Up” and will be released on Friday morning.

“Lift Me Up” is set to come out at midnight ET on the morning of Oct. 28, according to a tweet from Rihanna on Thursday. The song will show up on most major streaming platforms including Spotify, Tidal, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.

The popstar’s other song for the movie is called “Born Again,” but it’s unclear if that one will get an early release as well. This music comes as the first preview of the Black Panther sequel’s soundtrack. The accompanying album for the first movie, which included songs curated by Kendrick Lamar, turned out to be enormously popular in its own regard, with multiple hits including “All the Stars” which received several Grammy nominations and Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Monster High: The Sequel has been greenlit

Nickelodeon's recent hit Monster High: The Movie, a musical based on Mattel's popular line of toys. is getting a new sequel in partnership with Mattel Television.

The toy franchise - which debuted in 2010 with a popular line of dolls and accessories inspired by classic horror movie monsters and creatures like Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon - has inspired a number of related media and merchandise, including web series, games, and a YA book series. Nickelodeon's recent Monster High: The Movie was released earlier this month and directed by Todd Holland.

As reported by Deadline, the sequel will begin production in Vancouver in January and will be ready to air on Nickelodeon and Paramount Plus in time for Halloween 2023. The Monster High film follows Clawdeen Wolf (Miia Harris) as she arrives at Monster High with a dark secret. With the help of her friends Draculaura (Nayah Damasen) and Frankie Stein (Ceci Balagot), she is able to embrace her true monster heart and save the school from total destruction. The film also stars Case Walker, Kyle Selig, Marci T. House, Scotch Ellis Loring, Steve Valentine, Jy Prishkulnik, Lina Lecompte, Justin Derickson, Lilah Fitzgerald and Nasiv Sall.

The End Of Paradise getting a season 2???

In an exclusive interview with People en Español, Carmen Villalobos and Gregorio Pernía have confirm that few chapters have been written for The End of Paradise Season 2.

This is coming after the writer of the story, Gustavo Bolivar came to comment weeks ago in a live broadcast on Instagram that 10 chapters had been written.

After the hasty and open ending of the successful Telemundo saga, The Way to Paradise with The End of Paradise, the followers of the story did not lose hope that there could be a new season to close the plots that were left unfinished.

But now, Gregorio Pernía who gave life to 'El Titi' in the aforementioned story confirms to People en Español "What if there were some scripts written? Yes, there were like 10 scripts written" However, Pernía sees it very difficult for those chapters to be produced since each of the actors who were part of the saga have embarked on new professional paths.

Earlier in the month, MultiChoice launched a new preschool channel Moonbug Kids home to YouTube sensations Blippi and CoComelon. They also plan to launch a new jazz infused channel Qwest TV by Quincy Jones by the end of the year.

BET which was exclusive to consumers on the Compact, Compact+ and Premium package has been added to consumers on the Family and Access packages. Now we got word from Paramount that more of their channels will find their way to more households.

To top it off, MultiChoice will be rolling out another new channel Magic Showcase ahead of the launch of Qwest TV. Here's a look at the 4 channels:

1. Comedy Central
Channels: 122
Current packages: Premium and Compact+
Additional packages: Compact from 1st November

Home to shows such as The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, viewers will also get access to The Carbonaro Effect, Impractical Jokers, Just For Laughs and Two And A Half Men.

2. MTV

MultiChoice Bundles Two More Movie Channels To AddMovies

During the year, MultiChoice and M-Net ripped away fliekNET from DStv customers in South Africa and Namibia with the brand now reverted back to yearly pop-ups and kykNET now leading the pack with primetime movies.

AddMovies was introduced by September 2020 as M-Net was restructuring their movie offering for which was met with mixed to negative reviews primarily for those who were fans of M-Net Movies Premiere, M-Net Movies Action, M-Net Movies All-Stars and M-Net Movies Zone.

But thanks to the efforts of AddMovies they were able to keep the spark alive to even more households. Although, it will cost you extra which will be included in your monthly fees imagine bundling that with the Explora Ultra you're probably paying close to thousand.

Regardless AddMovies has seen a surge in subscribers but they're plenty of consumers who weren't as impressed with their selection of movies or at least the quantity of within the offering for which was lacking.

AddMovies initially started with 3 channels plus future popup channels or at least in the above mentioned regions but fliekNET didn't really have much impact as to why people got it in the first place and you can tell with the amount of rebroadcasts how miserable that channel was.

Honestly, fliekNET is better off as a pop-up or as seen with eExtra's Kuiertyd a block which airs at certain times of the week which is what I'm anticipating from kykNET's movie endeavours.

Anyways, MultiChoice seems to have added two of DStv Indian's current movie offerings SET Max and B4U Movies to the AddMovies family. Now I'm kind of curious as to what awaits from MultiChoice's next financial year.

Honestly, this just seems a bit much for AddMovies not that it's bad but the fact that one of them is stylised as the Bollywood version of M-Net Movies Premiere. Is it possible that maybe they'll hike it with the addition of these two?

All in all everyone but DStv Premium and Compact+ is a winner as Comedy Central, BET and MTV found their way to more households and Magic Showcase which is just MultiChoice's way of reinventing SABC will be rolling out in the coming month.

Roundups 105: Queen Of The South To End With Season 3 On Telemundo, Paddington Renewed For Season 3 On Nick Jr. And E! News Revived By NBCUniversal For E! Entertainment

Teresa Mendoza returns to your screens one last time

The television series La Reina del Sur tells the story of a powerful fictional drug trafficker named Teresa Mendoza, who is currently locked up in a U.S. maximum security prison for the murder of DEA agents.

The third season begins with Teresa still in a four-year solitary confinement.

"Four years have passed since being in a prison and it brings other things to head. It obviously brings a desire for freedom and revenge, to be once again with her daughter. We are going to see a warrior and craziest Teresa. Now she has absolutely nothing to lose," said the starring actress of the series, Kate del Castillo, in an interview with People en Español.

Paddington is getting a third season

Top European powerhouse Studiocanal has renewed its global deal with Nickelodeon which will board Season 3 of CG animated megahit “The Adventures of Paddington.”

Marking most surely one of the biggest single title content deals unveiled at this year’s Mipcom, the Nickelodeon renewal for Season 3 comes as Studiocanal has also unveiled a slew of second-window deals on Season 1 after the title’s hugely successful global rollout overseen, like Season 2, by Nickelodeon. It comes, moreover, just months after Studiocanal announced in June that Dougal Wilson is attached to direct “Paddington” 3, the third feature film in the franchise.

Together, the renewal, sales and new movie confirm “Paddington” as not only the biggest franchise at Studiocanal – at a time when the production-distribution-international sales giant is looking to expand its brand activity, says Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh – but as one of the most powerful in Europe.

E! News premieres 14 November

Late nights just got a whole lot better with the return of the beloved entertainment news show, E! News. After being put on hiatus in March 2020 due to COVID, the series was officially canceled in August 2020.

Going forward, the reimagined series will focus on fact-based reporting and give celebrities a platform to interact with their fans. In charge of helping you end your night with the 411 on all things pop culture are Emmy-winning TV host and personality Adrienne Bailon-Houghton and former Daily Pop host Justin Sylvester.

The return of E! News is a part of a much more significant shift happening in the entertainment network. Over the past few months, long-running shows like Daily Pop, hosted by Sylvester and Loni Love, as well as Nightly Pop, have been canceled as a part of the network’s plan to restructure. It was mentioned that the network wanted to “solidify E!’s role in entertainment news” and “return to the roots of the E! News brand as the gold standard of entertainment news coverage.”

Alternatives For The Deceased DStv Channel, MTV Hits

MultiChoice and Paramount decided to call it quits for the underperforming pop brand, MTV Hits with the channel set to go off air by 31 October 2022. Neither brand is willing to acknowledge the brands existence as the pay-tv brand gears the launch of the jazz infused channel, Qwest TV.

Qwest TV as mentioned is a jazz infused channel by none other than Grammy awarded musician Quincy Jones featuring content that resonates with fans of R&B, Soul and Gospel. Basically geared to a new audience and MultiChoice's way of making up for MTV Hits.

As advised a while ago, MTV Hits won't be supplemented by another channel with similar roots so we looked up a batch of alternatives. Not saying it will be the same or any better but it's better than nothing basically.

Here are some of the alternatives we were able to find for MTV Hits:

1. TRACE Urban

We are very much aware that most music channels on DStv are reaching to MTV Base's standards and tragically this channel fell prey to all that. If it's any consolation, there's still plenty of international to go around although I wouldn't say it appears as frequently as MTV Hits.

2. SoundCity

Yep, the Nigerian based music channel does offer a variety of international hits and yes it's reasons for functioning like MTV Base is justified. But viewers should turn their attention to a weeknight slot usually 9pm as they often to international countdowns and add City Divas to the mix on Sunday mornings.

3. DMX

We are aware all channels aren't dedicated to the talents of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande so we were able to list some of the channels where you can listen to a variety of pop hits: Adult Contemporary, Today's Hits, Y2K Hits.

4. Social Media

These are one of the many ways I've managed to keep up with most music trends these days. I dwell on sources such as Pop Crave, Billboard and Rap-Up if I ever want to keep tabs on current favorites and explore new artists.

5. Streaming services

For those who can afford to binge an entire season of Grey's Anatomy then this is for you, the world of iTunes, Apple Music, JOOX and Spotify is in your hands and I hear SoundCloud is where several rising stars like Doja Cat promote their music.

Openview Postpones The Launch Of BBC UKTV

Openview planned to launch the BBC UKTV channel on its platform on Tuesday, 18 October 2022. However, over a week later, the channel still isn’t available.

The eMedia-owned broadcaster said the much-anticipated launch had to be postponed saying that it still has to finalise details for the channel.

“We confirm that we planned to launch the BBC UKTV channel on Openview on 18 October,” Openview told sources.

“We are disappointed to announce that the much-anticipated launch had to be postponed. We are working on finalising details for the channel.”

Openview said it cannot provide a launch date for the channel on its platform for now.

On 29 September 2022, Openview and BBC Studios announced its partnership with the free-to-view satellite TV provider that would see the launch of BBC UKTV on channel 114.

It said the new channel would provide a range of programming, including natural history series, soaps, and children’s shows.

“From British soaps, fascinating documentaries and children’s shows, BBC UKTV has been carefully crafted to match the viewing habits of the whole family,” BBC Studios commercial director for Africa, Pierre Cloete, said.

It also promises to broadcast various cooking and motoring shows, such as The Great British Bake Off, Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook, Mary Berry Cooks, Top Gear, and Million Dollar Car Hunters.

BBC UKTV’s soap content will include Casualty, which will air every Thursday at 18:20, and Doctors will broadcast on weekdays at 19:00.

It will also air the long-running sitcom, My Family at 06:00 and 19:30 daily.

The channel’s natural history shows include Wild Africa, Africa with Ade Adepitan, and a selection of Sir David Attenborough’s docuseries.

It will also broadcast various children’s programming between 06:00 and 09:00 every morning.

Openview group executive for programming Marlon Davids said the move would help the broadcaster appeal to a wider audience.

“Openview is a growing platform and constantly adding new channels and genres to appeal to a broad audience,” Davids stated.

“We are pleased and excited to give our audiences even more choice, and more of the best in world-class entertainment with the addition of BBC UKTV.”

DStv Updates: Comedy Central And MTV To Be Made Available To More DStv Customers And Rumoured Developments For Nickelodeon And The Upcoming Pan-African Channel, Magic Showcase

Comedy Central to be made available to DStv Compact with MTV added to DStv Family from 1st November

Last month, MultiChoice hosted an open window for BET to their DStv Family and Access customers and it wasn't until October that it had been announced that the channel would be made available to consumers full-time. Now more of Paramount's channels are set to reach more DStv customers.

Comedy Central which is home to The Daily Show which was only seen on DStv Premium and Compact+ will now be made available to Compact and the Compact exclusive channel MTV will be available to consumers on the Family package.

It means DStv Compact customers will now have to access to Trevor Noah before he leaves his post alongside endless repeats of The Big Bang Theory, Two And A Half Men and Friends with Family customers being introduced to Ridiculousness, Ex On The Beach and Teen Moms.

While this may as well be good news to some customers. It kind of makes you wonder what could become of Premium and Compact+ now that there's less exclusivity amongst packages and this news will just make more consumers downgrade or cancel their subscription.

With MultiChoice attempting to rollout an unbundled package it wouldn't be shocking if they were to merge these packages or replace it with DStv Flex as those packages alongside Compact haven't seen much success in the recent financial year.

Now that Comedy Central, BET and MTV reach more DStv customers it means MultiChoice and Paramount are leaving Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. to die out like Nicktoons and MTV Base is doing alright wouldn't make much difference to me.

Rumoured developments for both Nickelodeon and Magic Showcase

According to sources, Nickelodeon which is currently available on DStv Premium and Compact+ in South Africa was said to be added to DStv Compact, Family and Access as seen in various regions but this might be due to the recent developments with Nicktoons.

Nicktoons has been on autopilot for several months as Paramount hasn't tried updating the schedule with more content and seem to be adding more content which ended or are on the verge of ending on Nickelodeon with SpongeBob and The Casagrandes carrying the channel.

The Casagrandes could be a supplement for The Loud House seeing as it has been deemed offensive as other regions usually have their most popular shows on during the day as seen with Cartoon Network and from the looks of it ALVINNN!!! is one of them.

Magic Showcase is said to be a Pan-African entertainment channel

Reported here first, MultiChoice and M-Net will be sourcing out more content from their archives for yet another channel as if viewer's aren't seeing plenty of rebroadcasts on Mzansi Wethu and Novela Magic but cable is dead at this point so why bother.

Magic Showcase is gearing to launch by November 1st but MultiChoice had already delayed launches of Moonbug Kids and INX Prime so here's hoping that there's a bit of accuracy coming forward with this brand.

The channel is said to be available to all customers but catered to DStv Access for Legacy and Survivor SA and mostly Easyview getting the full pie as they don't have any means to view the bulk of local entertainment such as Being Bonang and The Imposter.

As for the channel number, nothing has been mentioned but my guess would be channel 159/169.

Further Seasons Of Doctor Who To Stream Exclusively On Disney+ By Late 2023

Under the landmark deal Disney+ will exclusively stream all upcoming seasons of the show outside of the U.K. and Ireland, where they will remain with the BBC. The announcement, which had been rumored for months, was made by incoming Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, with the first episodes from the new partnership expected in November 2023 to coincide with its 60th anniversary.

“I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK,” said Russell T. Davies, the returning showrunner who succeeded Chris Chibnall.

“For Doctor Who to have the backing of two of the most innovative and respected media organizations in the world is a testament to the unique drive and vision at the heart of this show,” said Jane Tranter & Julie Gardner, executive producers and co-founders at Bad Wolf, who are co-producing with the BBC. “Bad Wolf are beyond delighted to be once again working with the genius that is Russell T Davies and, with the exciting new partnership between the BBC and Disney, we can together reach to even greater heights, producing from Wolf Studios Wales ambitious stories through time and space for audiences across the globe.”

Added Alisa Bowen, president of Disney+: “We’re excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiencesin more than 150 markets around the world. The series is a perfect addition to our ever-growing catalog of global content that continues to make Disney+ the home for exceptional storytelling.”

Although Gatwa official run as the 15th Doctor will kick of in late 2023, before then David Tennant will return to the TARDIS for three specials.

“We’re delighted to join forces with a partner who shares our vision and ambition for one of the most iconic shows in British TV history,” said Rebecca Glashow, CEO, Global Distribution, BBC Studios. “This is great news for everyone who loves Doctor Who, and for all the new fans we will reach through this powerful partnership.”

How Moonbug CEO Created A $3bn Empire?

Moonbug CEO Rene Rechtman tells Mark Layton about the firm’s expanding ambitions following its $3bn takeover by Candle Media and the rights strategy that lets them engage with kids on any platform

Having launched just four years ago, London and LA-based Moonbug Entertainment has established itself quickly – to the extent that its shows now claim 8.5 billion average monthly views on YouTube alone.

Led by CEO Rene Rechtman, a former Disney exec who co-founded the firm in 2018 alongside COO and WildBrain alum John Robson, its stated aim is nothing less than to become “the leading digital-first kids’ entertainment company in the world”.

It faces serious competition, of course, but with a portfolio now standing at 29 IPs in 32 languages, including Little Baby Bum, My Magic Pet Morphle, Supa Strikas and Playtime With Twinkle, the strategy seems to be working.

It was the savvy acquisition of kids IPs CoComelon and Blippi in 2020, however, that put Moonbug on the map, with CoComelon growing to become the second-most subscribed YouTube channel in the world, with more than 152 million subs and 4.3 billion average monthly views.

One of Moonbug’s greatest success stories, CoComelon now streams globally on Netflix, and is shown on a litany of local players worldwide, as well as its original YouTube home.

“One of the key reasons why we’ve been so successful in such short a time is the multi-platform approach that we are taking,” Rechtman tells sources. “Very early on, we said we need to be where all the kids and families are – full stop.”

He explains: “The behaviour of the audience has changed forever, and we need to adapt to that – it’s silly not to – and that gave us the opportunity, because a lot of great IPs out there had limited exposure. They were behind local or regional paywalls where kids are not spending as much screen time as they used to.”

Hold on to your IP

Moonbug’s strategy sounds straight-forward enough – seek out brands with “great awareness and engagement with kids” that have yet to become global hits, buy them and make sure to hold onto rights. Then distribute as widely as possible to build global franchises, with spin-off shows, L&M deals and all that entails.

“That’s one of the things I learned spending four years at Disney,” says Rechtman, “the power of owning your IP and controlling your IP’s destiny, because that’s how the money falls into your pocket in the end and not somebody else’s.”

Rechtman describes Moonbug’s approach as “a little bit of an upside-down” model. “We are financing our own shows, so therefore we can have that bold approach that our content needs to be on every platform where kids are engaging,” he says.

Highlighting again the importance of placing content across digital, streaming and linear, Rechtman says that in the US “it’s very clear that if you are on, let’s say YouTube and Netflix, you’re covering 90-something percent of your demographic group,” whereas outside the US where Netflix does not reach the audience to the same extent, “we need to be on several platforms locally.”

Rechtman suggests: “When content is popular and you have created a huge audience already, you should definitely go for a multi-platform approach – you’d be crazy not to.

“I’m not saying if somebody goes and invests heavily in an original with you that you can have the same approach, because you have somebody who is financing it, but if you have the privilege to finance partly or fully your own shows, that’s the approach you should have.”

Seeking synergies

This is a strategy that certainly seems to be working for Moonbug, with the company receiving recognition and some solid backing last year when it was acquired by Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs’ Blackstone Group-backed investment outfit, Candle Media, in a deal valued at $3bn.

Rechtman says that the two companies share the same “thesis” of building franchises from existing IP, with Candle and Blackstone simply doing the same thing in a “broader space.”

For Moonbug, the deal means it is now able to chase its ambitions “faster and bolder” and pursue “the most interesting and potentially biggest IPs out there”. Rechtman notes that “with the deep pockets of Blackstone, there’s nothing we cannot do.”

The Moonbug boss adds that being able to speak with Mayer and Staggs on a daily basis is “phenomenal”. He adds: “I mean, we’re talking about two of the brains behind many years of success at Disney and acquisitions like Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm.

“Kevin was a big part of that and a big part of our business model is acquisitions, so having that day-to-day strategic interaction is just phenomenal.”

Joining the Candle stable also opens the doors to collaborations with sibling labels, such as Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, which is developing a new children’s project with Moonbug that Rechtman says is still at an early stage, but will allow the firms to engage with families together.

Moonbug’s portfolio is expected to continue to expand over the next 12 months, with Rechtman revealing the firm is on the lookout for opportunities similar to its recent acquisitions of Singapore’s Oddbods prodco One Animation and Canadian YouTube network Little Angel.

“[We] hopefully will do a big acquisition or two – if we’re lucky both this year, at least one of them this year,” he says.

The firm also has its eye on shows “that historically have done really well but maybe have been sleeping or hidden away behind paywalls here and there, but which still have huge relevant libraries but less awareness with young kids.”

For now, Moonbug is mainly focused on creating and acquiring content for its target demographic of 0-8-year-olds, but Rechtman tells TBI that the firm is open to expanding its audience – so long as the right opportunity comes along.

“We are interested in a little bit older. It’s a slightly more difficult game, so if we do something it needs to be bold, it needs to be one of the top three IPs in the world, to have complete recognition both on awareness and affinity, from, let’s say 8–12-year-olds.

“But if we don’t find anything like that then we won’t really go into that area. It’s because that area is driven by trends, it’s driven by localised content much more than the younger demos – kids are taking their own decisions rather than parents being involved.”

Taking the shortest route

It’s a fascinating point, because while Rechtman’s company is making millions out of kids shows, parents are the gatekeepers. On top of that, the way that shows are being consumed and the types of series being watched evolve rapidly, so awareness and nimbleness are key.

“We are recruiting quite a lot of young people out of universities and creative schools all around the world,” he says. “We were showing our content to the last bunch of young people who came into us and one of them asked: ‘What are you doing in short form?’”

Rechtman shares his surprise: “We are the short form company, right? Our content is typically four minutes and everything under 11 minutes is considered short form. But no, in their world everything under one minute is short form – so that’s an interesting space to watch.”

He explains: “If you have young people who are soon to become parents talking about short form being 60 seconds or less, we have to start thinking what can be done there, how can you tell stories to our audience?”

“Something is definitely happening there and it’s definitely driven by Instagram and TikTok in particular, which are two platforms our kids are not on yet – so that’s something that I’m very interested in.”

Looking further ahead, Rechtman predicts that children’s shows will be taken more seriously than they have been before. “Kid’s content for many years has been neglected, that’s why we have been so successful in such short time.”

He notes: “You don’t win big awards and Oscars and stuff like that with kids’ content – not the kind of kids content that kids want to watch, at least – so it’s kept a lot of very creative people and very innovative people away.”

However, as the gap between technology and kids content closes, Rechtman believes “a lot of talented people” will come back to it.

The exec adds that he is also interested in how younger children are increasingly spending more time playing video games, with Moonbug having now moved in this space too.

October saw the launch of CoComelon: Play With JJ on Nintendo Switch, which for Rechtman and his multi-platform thesis, represents a whole new avenue to interact “with as many kids and families as possible.” And a whole new place to build on those 8.5 billion monthly views.

Namibia's Partnership With WildEarth A Boost For Wildlife Live Stream

Namibia's first live stream camera showcasing wildlife at the Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park, a national park in northwestern of the country, received a boost following a partnership with WildEarth, a 24/7 live television channel, an executive announced few days ago.

Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) spokesperson Nelson Ashipala said the Okaukuejo waterhole live streaming camera is now available on WildEarth's DStv channel 183 and the initiative complements the already viral NWR Live YouTube channel launched in April, with viewership reaching as high as 1,000 wildlife enthusiasts per day.

"To enhance customer experience, NWR partnered with WildEarth to allow for the viewing of waterhole action footage as it unfolds at the most famous waterhole in Namibia, reaching an audience of about 5 million people globally per month," he said in a statement.

According to Ashipala, this initiative is a first for Namibia, whereby a live stream camera showcases the wildlife that Namibia offers, complemented with expert commentary from trained naturalists.

"Using a combination of live broadcasting, expert naturalists, interactivity, community, and a point-of-view shooting style, partnering up with WildEarth will help millions of viewers feel remotely present in nature without increasing their footprint," he added.

Ashipala meanwhile said this experience excites NWR as an organization as it will make wildlife enthusiasts curious to the point where they want to travel to Etosha National Park in particular and Namibia in general.

The Okaukuejo waterhole, which is located 17 km from the southern entrance of the Etosha National Park, one of the largest national parks in Africa, is a wildlife sanctuary watering hole for black rhinos and elephants, famously known for its floodlit waterhole, where visitors can observe at close quarters a spectacle of wildlife congregation and interactions.

The History Of Former NBC Soap Passions Once Seen On e.tv

Passions debuted in 1999 with major fanfare. Creator Reilly had been credited for a large surge in the ratings for Days of our Lives years before, thanks to innovative storylines like that of heroine Dr. Marlena Evans being possessed by Satan that drew new viewers, but also tended to alienate stalwart fans. With Passions, Reilly was able to start with a blank slate and no pre-existing fan base to please.

In the early days of the show, Passions heroine Sheridan Crane is identified as a close friend of Diana, Princess of Wales; soon Sheridan recalls speaking to Diana on the phone immediately prior to the 1997 car accident which took the Princess' life. Sheridan also has a similar accident in the same Paris tunnel, and speaks to a "guardian Angel Diana" who urges her to fight to survive, which drew considerable controversy. Sheridan later adopts the name Diana after a boating accident that results in amnesia.

The opening days of the show also introduced the Theresa/Ethan/Gwen love triangle that persisted as an ongoing main storyline to the very last episode of the series.

For much of the first three to four years of the series, supernatural elements such as witches, warlocks, and closet doors leading to Hell were major plot points, many surrounding the machinations of the centuries-old witch Tabitha Lenox and her doll-brought-to-life sidekick, Timmy — named by Entertainment Weekly as one of their "17 Great Soap Supercouples" in 2008. In 2001, HarperEntertainment released Hidden Passions , a tie-in novelization presented as Tabitha's diary, exposing the secrets and pasts of the town's residents. Passions featured a storyline involving Tabitha and Timmy promoting the book, which reached #4 on the real-life New York Times Best Seller list and garnered the series two alternative covers of TV Guide in July 2001.

In 2003, Passions submitted a trained orangutan named BamBam, who had been portraying the recurring role of Precious, for a Daytime Emmy Award. Precious was the non-speaking live-in nurse and caregiver for elderly Edna Wallace, and held an unrequited love for Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, which was depicted in elaborate fantasy sequences. In early 2004, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which administers the awards, disallowed the entry with the following statement:

Our ruling is based on the belief that the Academy must draw a line of distinction between animal characters that aren't capable of speaking parts and human actors whose personal interpretation in character portrayal creates nuance and audience engagement that uniquely qualifies those performers for consideration of television's highest honor.

In summer 2005, the prominent character Simone Russell came out as homosexual; Passions made daytime history by being the first serial to show two women — Simone and love interest Rae Thomas — in bed making love. In 2007, it was revealed that longtime hero Chad Harris-Crane was cheating on his wife with another man. This was also a daytime first, with the men portrayed in bed together. Passions also broke new ground in 2007 with its portrayal of Vincent as an intersexual who becomes pregnant with his own father's son.

Nearly seven years after the debut of Passions on July 5, 1999, the NBC-owned Sci Fi Channel began airing the series from its first episode starting February 13, 2006; the reruns had originally been announced to begin on February 6. Due to low ratings, the reruns were taken off the air as of May 25, 2006. On August 15, 2006, Passions became the first daytime drama to make full episodes available for download and purchase from the online music store iTunes. On November 6, 2006, the show also became the first daytime drama to make full episodes available for free viewing via streaming on NBC.com.

Though plagued since its inception by low overall Nielsen ratings, Passions was historically top-rated in key demographics. The series was not renewed by NBC for a full ninth season in 2007 because of its low ratings coupled with the network's decision to extend its morning news and talk show Today to a fourth hour. Since NBC owned the series entirely, NBC began shopping for other networks, especially cable networks to pick up the series for a ninth season, however there was no luck in other networks willing to pick up the series because of devastating low ratings and extreme expensive production costs. In April 2007, Satellite provider DirecTV bought exclusive rights from NBC to continue airing Passions, with most principal cast members staying on. As the series was coming to an end on NBC, Passions Live talk show hosted by Eric Martsolf premiered in August 2007 every Thursday night on DirecTV's The 101 giving fans the chance to call the show and interact live with Passions cast members, making Passions the first and only soap opera to ever have live talk show in U.S. history. The Passions Live talk show continued to air every Thursday night after moving to DirecTV until October 2007. The live show was also streaming live on the Official Passions Site at NBC.com. The series ended its NBC run on September 7, 2007, and new episodes began airing on DirecTV's original-programming channel The 101 on September 17, 2007, making Passions both the first soap opera broadcast on a direct broadcast satellite service and the first series to make such a transition from broadcast television. The series ran Monday to Thursday at 2 pm ET/11 am PT, with repeats airing later in the day and on weekends. Although NBC.com continued to cover the series' official website with updating features, video clips of each episode aired, updating news, and products relating to Passions, including all of the full videos of Passions Live show once the series left NBC and had moved to DirecTV, initially new episodes were no longer available for free viewing on the Passions official website at NBC.com or for purchase at iTunes.com since NBC's broadcasting decisions were entirely sold to DirecTV and the NBC.com Passions site promoted a DirecTV link letting fans know that Passions was no longer airing on NBC and was only available on DirecTV. On September 27, 2007, DirecTV announced they would provide an All Access Pass to Passions to view all new episodes on the Official Passions Site at NBC.com for a monthly fee. This service began on October 1, 2007 for $19.99 a month then reduced to $14.99 a month when Passions' schedule was cut from four episodes a week to three episodes a week. After the series moved to DirecTV, the subscription service added a special feature where a trivia question relating to Passions would pop up on each episode airing on The 101 for viewers to use their remote control to answer. Passions is first and only soap opera to ever have this type of feature.

On December 10, 2007, Variety magazine and various cast members confirmed that DirecTV had decided not to renew Passions for another year, but ordered 52 additional episodes to be taped through March 2008. New episodes of the series were broadcast until August 7, 2008, with DirecTV airing three new episodes per week starting January 2008. Universal Media Studios wrapped up production of Passions on March 28, 2008. The cast and crew were told at the wrap party that efforts to find a new outlet had failed and that the cancellation was final. Cast member McKenzie Westmore confirmed the news. Though Passions had been the highest-rated original program on DirecTV's The 101, it was reported that the network had failed to meet the projected number of new subscribers they had hoped to attract with the series.
