New Series Alert: After Launching On SABC 3, Orphans Of A Nation Has Been Picked Up By eMedia Investments For Their eExtra Channel

eExtra, a South African based general entertainment channel operated by eMedia Investments which serves mainly telenovelas from India, Turkey and Korea is coming to Brazil for known other the Emmy awarded telenovela Orphans Of A Nation (Órfãos Da Terra).

Created by the Emmy Award winners Thelma Guedes and Duca Rachid tells the harrowing love story set within the modern-day context of refugees and immigrants from around the world who leave their countries for various reasons. Julia Dalavia and Renato Góes take on lead roles.

Orphans Of The Nation was beamed on SABC 3 last year as the public broadcaster was hell bent on reinventing the channel to cater for those who'd view channels like M-Net on DStv and serving as an alternative to eMedia's Kuiertyd offering which has been dominating South African screens with their Turkish offering.

At the time SABC channel's head stated:

"Orphans of a Nation has a great big love story at the centre of it but it also manages to place the drama in the real world of our time," says Pat van Heerden, SABC3 channel head.

"It awakens in us a sense of our connections as a country to the plight of our own refugees in South Africa that too have their love stories and pain from fleeing their native lands."

Now viewers can relive the action on eExtra from October at 13:15 replacing Fatmagul.

MultiChoice Made A Minor Error With Moonbug Kids

During the week, MultiChoice has been sharing several advertisements to the upcoming preschool channel, Moonbug Kids from Moonbug Entertainment and this time it is placed on channel 314 and not channel 360 as originally advertised.

Channel 360 just seemed like a very distant area for a kids channel especially if there's no alternatives sitting alongside so it makes sense to inherit the 314 as most other slots have been filled up by various regional channels ranging from Akili Kids to Edu TV.

But questions amount to who was it fault for 360 could it be MultiChoice as the adverts do mention and credit DStv or could it be the owners themselves Moonbug Entertainment as North Africa also has the brand occupying the channel number.

As seen through various outlets, Moonbug Kids will be rolling out on the DStv platform this October with various shows such as CoComelon, Blippi, Oddbods, Gecko's Garage, Arpo, Morphie and Supa Strikas.

Prior to its rollout on DStv, Moonbug Kids had made several shows accessible to consumers including CoComelon, Oddbods and Supa Strikas to Cartoon Network and Boomerang.

Tshwane TV's Website May Be Up For Sale With Outdated GauTV Website Still Visible

Community channels Tshwane TV and GauTV both of which are supplied to MultiChoice's DStv by Zallywood Inc. seem to have gotten themselves in a much deeper hole following the alienation of their audiences for more prophets.

As stated a while back, several community channels from the likes of Soweto TV, Cape Town TV and Mpuma Kapa TV have all been working on improving their offering as we reach a digital era with brands like these becoming a thing of the past but unlike these channels at least there's signs of life unfortunately I can't say the same for these two channels.

Apparently, Tshwane TV's website which was seen as somewhat of an encyclopaedia or wiki has been replaced with spam mail as those who try viewing the website either get directed to ads requiring your phone number or other any scams seen on the defunct website.

But that's not the end of it when searching for their website it writes the domain might be put up for sale. Is it possible that new management could be underway for the channel or is the brand's future alongside GauTV as dark as BopTV.

GauTV's website is still functional if anything it hasn't been outdated in a long while which just leads me to believe that there's a lot of mismanagement happening behind closed doors. It's possible that MultiChoice hasn't picked up on that or has but probably working on something.

From what was stated by the founder of Limpopo TV, the pay-tv brand is in no mood to add another Soweto TV or 1KZN but I believe the impossible is possible. Take for instance, the poorly managed ITV Networks which was supplemented by Hilaal TV taking to account that it is religious.

When adding a new channel or upgrading an existing channel to high definition. Community and religious channels are often last when considered for such setup.

Is it possible that MultiChoice will review the offering in this section as seen with fellow religious channels taking to account the financial circumstances in this scenario?

As outlined by Cape Town TV, several community stations need DStv in order to survive and some like this brand for instance rely on them to help out on several expenses. But if you're anything like Tshwane TV why bother about the details.

Lionsgate Leaning Toward Spinning Off Its Studio Business Instead Of Starz

Lionsgate is now leaning toward spinning off its studio division and selling a minority stake in it, rather than spinning Starz, according to sources.
Lionsgate hasn’t given up on also selling a minority stake in Starz, but there’s more investor interest in the studio business, they added.

Longer term, Lionsgate executives have interest in selling both the studio and Starz, sources said.
The studio business produces films and TV series, and includes a library of more than 17,000 titles, such as “The Hunger Games” and “Mad Men".

This would be a change in strategy for the media and entertainment company, which said in May it expected to finalize a spin or sale of Starz by the end of summer. In recent months, Lionsgate has held talks to sell a 20% stake in Starz to a number of potential buyers, including most recently Vivendi-owned Canal+, the people said, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private. Those talks haven’t ended, but no deal is imminent, said the people.

Lionsgate is engaged in talks with multiple potential partners about selling a stake in the studio business, said the people. Those talks are likely to more quickly reach a deal Lionsgate is comfortable with than for Starz since there’s more robust interest, the people said. The studio business produces films and TV series, and includes a library of more than 17,000 titles, such as “The Hunger Games,” “The Expendables,” and “Mad Men.”

In a securities filing Wednesday morning, the company confirmed it “remains on a path” toward separating the two businesses and has shifting its thinking toward a studio spin.

“As negotiations progress, we have increased our focus on the possibility of spinning our studio business, creating a number of financial and strategic benefits,” Lionsgate said in the filing. “In that regard, we are continuing productive negotiations with prospective strategic and financial partners on both sides of our business,” the filing said.

Shares of the company rose about 1% Wednesday morning.

Selling a stake in the studio to a private-equity firm or strategic company will set a valuation floor for the business to trade on its own. It would also bring an immediate jolt of capital to Lionsgate, whose shares have plummeted in recent years. Lionsgate’s market valuation is about $1.8 billion, down from nearly $7 billion in early 2018.

Longer term, Lionsgate is interested in selling both the studio and Starz, said the people. The company competes against much larger entities – including Netflix, Disney, Amazon, Apple and Comcast's NBCUniversal – in TV and movie production. Lionsgate executives hope a spin off of the studio and separation of Starz would be first steps toward facilitating a sale of both units to maximize value for shareholders, said the people.

“We’re not going to make a dumb deal on one or both sides of the business,” Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns said during a Bank of America media and entertainment conference last month. “I think our shareholders will be very happy with the outcome.”

Starzplay rebrand
Lionsgate also plans to rebrand its international streaming service, Starzplay, to Lionsgate+, said the people. The rebrand will take place in 35 countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific, including the U.K., France, Germany, Australia and Japan, one of the people said. The company confirmed the change later Wednesday morning.

Starz’s streaming service will keep the Starz brand in the U.S. and Canada, the person said. Starz is in 63 countries and ended last quarter with 26.3 million global streaming subscribers.

Rebranding Starz to Lionsgate+ also keeps a link between Lionsgate and Starz even as the businesses separate.

MGM+ To Rollout In 2023

The cable network and streaming service is getting a new name and identity as well as a handful of new titles, as part of a relaunch set for January 2023.

MGM+ joins the likes of Disney+, Discovery+, Paramount+, ESPN+ and BET+ with the use of the symbol.

It comes five years after the vaunted Hollywood studio completed its acquisition of Viacom and Lionsgate’s stake in the business, giving it full control of the network, and five months after Amazon completed its own acquisition of MGM.

As part of the rebrand, the network, which will continue to be available in the U.S. on Prime Video, cable, telco, satellite, has handed out a number of greenlights.

Hotel Cocaine, which comes from Narcos’ Chris Brancato, has been handed an eight-episode order and Julian Fellowes’ British period drama Belgravia has been given a follow-up series.

Hotel Cocaine, which was revealed in development in February, is the story of Roman Compte, Cuban exile, CIA operative, and general manager of the The Mutiny Hotel, the glamorous epicenter of the Miami cocaine scene of late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

The Hotel Mutiny was Casablanca on cocaine, a glitzy nightclub, restaurant and hotel frequented by Florida businessmen and politicians, international narcos, CIA and FBI agents, models, sports stars, and musicians — particularly the up-and-coming Latin acts who came from South America with their instruments and four kilos of cocaine in their suitcases. Compte was at the center, doing his best to keep it all going and fulfill his own American Dream.

Produced by Epix Studios, Brancato will serve as showrunner and exec producer. Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth) will direct the pilot and also executive produce.

Belgravia is getting another chapter in Belgravia: The Next Chapter. The original series was written by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and based on his novel. It premiered on Epix in April 2020 and was a co-production with ITV.

Belgravia: The Next Chapter will pick up in 1865, 25 years after the events depicted in the 2020 limited series.

Developed and written by Helen Edmundson, who wrote the Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix-fronted feature Mary Magdalene, it will tell the love story of Frederick Trenchard, who has grown up as the third Lord Glanville, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn, who is a newcomer to London society. Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother Susan and the scoundrel John Bellasis, a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his courtship of and marriage to Clara.

It is produced by Carnival Films, which produced Belgravia and Downton Abbey, and Epix Studios. Gareth Neame exec produces with Nigel Marchant and Joanna Strevens.

On the non-fiction side, the network has ordered San Francisco Sounds (w/t) to series. Unveiled as part of its development slate in February, the two-part documentary tracks the history of the San Francisco music scene from 1965 to 1975, which featured artists such as The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone and Janis Joplin.

Exec producers include Marshall, Jeff Pollack, Alex Gibney, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and Ellwood, who is also attached to direct. It comes from Jigsaw Productions in association with Amblin Television and The Kennedy/Marshall Company.

Alison Ellwood, who directed History of the Eagles and Epix’s Laurel Canyon, is attached to direct with Anoosh Tertzakian, who has edited docs including Laurel Canyon, Elvis Presley: The Searcher and Sinatra: All or Nothing At All.

Ellwood will exec produce alongside Frank Marshall, Alex Gibney, Jeff Pollack, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Stacey Offman, Richard Perello and Jeff Jampol. Jigsaw Productions is producing in association with Amblin Television and The Kennedy/Marshall Company.

It joins a non-fiction line-up that also includes Helter Skelter, NFL Icons and an untitled Amityville Murders docuseries that was ordered earlier this year.

The MGM+ service will also have a big library of MGM films such as No Time to Die, House of Gucci, and Licorice Pizza as well as the James Bond and Rocky franchises.

The newly rebranded network and streamer will launch on January 15, 2023 with the launch of the third season of Forest Whitaker drama series Godfather of Harlem, which was one its most successful shows to date.

Other series include Billy the Kid and sci-fi horror thriller From.

“MGM is one of the most iconic and beloved brands from the golden age of entertainment,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “This rebrand is a promise to existing and new viewers that MGM+ is the place to find television that reflects and celebrates the legacy of the iconic MGM brand – cinematic programming with sophisticated storytelling that entertains, delights, surprises, and transports. MGM is television for movie lovers.”

7 Things You Didn't Know About The Classic Tom's Diner As You Wait On The Coffee

Suzanne Vega wrote her wordy a cappella tune "Tom’s Diner" in 1981 during a visit to a diner in her neighborhood, the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The place itself is actually called Tom’s Restaurant and would become even more famous as the exterior of the diner frequented by the characters on Seinfeld. The song appeared as the opening track on Vega’s second album, Solitude Standing, in 1987, but her label passed it over as a single in the States, going instead for “Luka,” a beautifully melodic downer about an abused child. ("Luka" reached No. 3 on Billboard’s chart, so it wasn’t a bad decision.) But “Tom’s Diner” ended up with a much longer, more interesting life full of revivals, remakes, and other shots at immortality, including a prominent sampling in Fall Out Boy’s hit “Centuries” last year and a recent, well-received cover sung by Britney Spears on the Giorgio Moroder album Déjà Vu. Some of the other highlights of “Tom’s” enduring life:

1. "Tom's Diner" was written from a male perspective.
Vega wrote the song when she was attending nearby Barnard Collage and stopped in for coffee. It’s written from a specifically male perspective, inspired by her photographer friend, Brian Rose, who told her that he perceived the world as if through a pane of glass. She thought of that as she sat at Tom’s and tried to imagine how her friend would see the things she saw that day. (She never mentions being a male narrator in the song, but she does imply that the character at first thinks the woman “hitching up her skirt” outside the diner is flirting with him, then he realizes “she does not really see me ‘cause she sees her own reflection.”)

2. The song references real places and events.
The “bells of the cathedral” Vega sings about are those of the nearby St. John the Divine, a majestic structure with a long history of its own, where she once had a "midnight picnic " with songwriter Jack Hardy.

3. Some intrepid fans figured out which day the narrator was at Tom's.
The official “Tom’s Diner Day”—the day Vega presumably wrote the song—is Nov. 18, 1981. An article posted on her official website traces the lyrical evidence, mainly the reference to the newspaper of that day, specifically “the story of an actor who had died while he was drinking/it was no one I had heard of.” Her friend Brian Rose, in his own article, placed the writing of the song between 1981 and 1982. Actor William Holden’s body was discovered Monday, Nov. 16, 1981, having lain in his California home for a week after he fell and fatally hit his head while drunk. The news broke Tuesday, Nov. 17, but The New York Post , one of the only two New York papers with the “funnies” the narrator is seeking, reported it on Wednesday, Nov. 18. And the horoscopes that the narrator had to turn through were, in fact, near the funnies in the Post. Alas, it didn’t rain that day, as the lyrics suggest it was doing while she wrote it. Vega, asked about the contradiction, said she actually wrote it on at least two separate mornings at Tom’s.

4. The remix wasn't Vega's creation, but she loved it anyway.
In 1990, three years after the original was released, two record producers from England working together as DNA remixed Vega’s original a cappella version with an R&B beat that sounded similar to Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me) .” They called it “Oh Susanne!” and sold it at their local record store without proper permission from Vega’s label, A&M Records. When A&M got wind of this, they considered legal action. But Vega asked to hear the version and loved it, so she convinced A&M to pay DNA a flat fee and distribute it. The track got instant radio play and became a hit, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

5. The song became so popular, Vega was able to release an entire album of covers.
There have been many versions and samplings since DNA’s release, including an entire 1991 record called Tom’s Album that collected nine versions by other artists along with several Vega versions. It included a track by an act called Bingo Hand Job, which was the nom de plume R.E.M. used for a couple of secret London shows with English singer-songwriter Billy Bragg. Other “Tom’s” riffs explored accidental pregnancy (Nikki D’s “Daddy’s Little Girl”), the Gulf War (Beth Watson’s “Waiting at the Border”), and TV’s I Dream of Jeannie (Marylin E. Whitelaw and Mark Davis’ “Jeannie’s Diner”).

6. Hip-hop artists love sampling "Tom's" beats.
Other samplings and reimaginings throughout the years have come from a surprising number of hip-hop artists: Felt’s “Suzanne Vega, ” Lil’ Kim’s “Right Now,” 2 Pac’s “Dopefiend’s Diner, ” Drake’s “Juice, ” Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire.” Timbaland even sampled the song on “Nothing But a Number ” for the TV show Empire earlier this year.

7. The song was used to create new music technology.

Vega is known as “the mother of the MP3” because her a cappella version was used by German engineer Karl-Heinz Brandenberg to fine-tune his compression algorithm when he was creating the format we all use now for our digital song files. Vega even visited the lab where it was done (and briefly haggled with the engineering team about the perfection of their sound quality). And there’s a haunting “version” of the song called “moDernisT," composed of the echoes from the compression process. So when you download Britney’s new version of “Tom’s Diner,” you have Vega to thank in more ways than one.

Zee Cinema and WION move up on DStv

Last year, MultiChoice unveiled two new channels for the Indian bouquet Zee Cinema from Zee Entertainment Enterprises and WION from Essel Group as both were slotted respectively on channel 470 and 471.

After almost a year on air on the platform, MultiChoice decides to silently move them 10 spaces up with Zee Cinema now channel 460 and WION on channel 461 with no explanation as to why but our hunch has to be that they're trying to get the channels close together.

Honestly it didn't make any sense to have them with those numbers considering that there was hardly any barrier keeping them apart from other Indian channels.

Carmen and Untangled to be added onto Zee One

Zee Entertainment Enterprises wasn't kidding when they said Zee One was trying to be a spin-off to Africa's #1 Indian entertainment channel Zee World which is exclusively available to MultiChoice's DStv as they acquire two new dramas for the channel, Untangled and Carmen.

Untangled, Diya, a gully badminton player, meets Arjun, a former badminton champ from an affluent family, who resents his own kin. Will Diya bring back the much-needed positivity and hope in Arujns life? Don't miss the premiere on October 7th at 6pm CAT.

Carmen, follows a young woman who comes to Cairo to become famous and rich. She starts working at a big company and as a presenter in Alwan radio station. Having lied in order to win the position; the lies that follow give rise to many comic situations. Carmen falls in love with Tawfeeq and faces many problems, but finally wins Tawfeeq and marries him.

Moonbug Entertainment Plans To Launch A Second Kids Channel With Its Own Set Of Entertainment

During the week, it was reported that the Moonbug Kids channel will be made available to DStv subscribers across 45 African countries this October with content like CoComelon, Blippi, Gecko’s Garage, Morphle, Arpo and recent acquisitions such as Little Angel and Oddbods.

With plans to launch a localised version in Turkey and expand it to further regions in Western Europe.

Moonbug earlier this year hired former Discovery exec – and former Digitürk chief content officer and CMO – Dilek Doyran as director, distribution and content partnerships, EMEA, to help take its business forward in the region.

In an interview with TBI sister title DTVE, Moonbug EMEA and APAC managing director Nicolas Eglau said Moonbug’s strategy of continuing to acquire more content that can be distributed in multiple ways also means it is now in sight of launching a second channel.

“We have so much content that I believe we would be able to launch a second channel in some markets,” he said, citing the model of Discovery in building a portfolio of brands.

The second channel would, he said, be targeted, like Moonbug Kids, at the pre-school audience but with a different mix of content and “a selection of brands that would follow a certain logic”.

In addition to launches of linear channels on pay TV, Moonbug also distributes content to SVOD players such as Netflix and public broadcaster’s digital platforms such as BBC iPlayer. Eglau says that YouTube will also remain central to the company’s distribution.

“We’ve really benefited from a shift in mindset,” said Eglau. “Five years ago it would probably be impossible to launch a linear channel with purely YouTube content, but there has definitely been a shift in perception of the quality of YouTube content.”

Hasbro Considering Selling Or Restructuring Its Assets

When Hasbro bought eOne under former CEO and Chairman Brian Goldner, who died unexpectedly last fall, the company was getting both valuable new intellectual properties — including PJ Masks and Peppa Pig — of benefit to its toy business, as well as knowhow in producing entertainment, giving the company a direct channel to cashing in from media made out of its own properties.

“The acquisition of eOne adds beloved story-led global family brands that deliver strong operating returns to Hasbro’s portfolio and provides a pipeline of new brand creation driven by family-oriented storytelling, which will now include Hasbro’s IP,” Goldner explained in a press release at the time. “In addition, Hasbro will leverage eOne’s immersive entertainment capabilities to bring our portfolio of brands … to all screens globally and realize full franchise economics across our blueprint strategy for shareholders.”

With the acquisition, Hasbro’s entertainment revenue jumped from $77.8 million in 2019 to more than $900 million in 2020 and topped $1.1 billion in 2021. The last two years have also brought operating losses in the entertainment division, in part from acquisition costs related to eOne. Hasbro, as Shaw noted, also ran into the disruption to the film and television industry created by the pandemic.

Under new CEO Chris Cocks, Hasbro launched a comprehensive review of its strategy and operations earlier this year as it looks to grow operating profit and focus on multi-generation entertainment.

A Hasbro spokesperson did not comment specifically on the details of the Bloomberg report. “Entertainment is a core foundation at Hasbro,” the company said in an emailed statement. “As part of our strategic review process, we are always open to new and better ways to tell stories and bring people together through the power [of] play via our world-class family of brands.”

In April, Hasbro sold off one major asset from eOne — its music business — for $385 million.

Hasbro this year fended off a brush with activist investment firm Alta Fox, which had put forward a slate of three directors of its choosing to replace some current members of Hasbro’s board. Alta Fox pushed Hasbro to spin off its valuable Wizards of the Coast game business.

The activist firm also took a shot at eOne, saying in February that the acquisition “diluted Hasbro’s shareholders, added a substantial amount of debt to the balance sheet, complicated the investor narrative and destroyed significant value.”

International: Disney To Close A Further 3 Channels This Month

Last year, The Walt Disney Company unveiled plans to close a further 100 channels globally as more content goes onto the streaming service, Disney+. With MultiChoice carrying parts of these channels through 2024 means viewers have more time to unwind until the same occurs as seen in these regions.

Later in the year, it was reported that FOX in Turkey the only International feed to offer original content part of which has been supplied to e.tv such as Dokter Ali (Mucize Doctor), Doodsondes (Yasak Elma) and DisComplicated (Sen Çal Kapımı) will go off air by 2023.

Ahead of its demise, FOX Crime will suffer the chop by the end of this month which kind of coincides with FOX and FOX Life's termination in Africa as both were shuttered within the same period just years apart from each other.

In Italy, Sky was able to confirm that both National Geographic and National Geographic Wild will also go dark by the end of the month not only on their platforms but the whole region. This comes as the operator in that region just like DStv has seen a loss in channels.

Although it's not the distributor's fault when a supplier stops supplying a certain product. It is however their job to keep viewers entertained although the sad part about that is the alternatives will be nothing like these channels and viewers only hope at this point is Disney+.

With several households struggling to get fibre even a platform like DStv and Sky. Viewers will have to make due with what's already available to them.

Inside The Enduring Mysteries Of Elvis Presley's Tragic And Controversial End

“Elvis Presley is the greatest cultural force in the 20th century,” the famous composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein told a reporter from TIME in the late 1960s. When the reporter prodded, skeptical, about the cultural influence of other legendary artists like Picasso, Bernstein merely reiterated, "No, it’s Elvis."

45 years after the iconic performer's death—with 108 Billboard Hot 100 hits, 129 charted albums, and 67 collective weeks at the top of the charts on his record—it's a sentiment that remains hard to argue with.

Ahead of Baz Luhrman's new biopic, Elvis , starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks (out June 24), we're taking a look back at the tragic end of the rock star's life.

When did Elvis die?
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935, Elvis Aron Presley would become one of the most recognizable musicians in the world by the time he passed away in his famed Memphis mansion, Graceland, on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42.
That afternoon the singer was found by his girlfriend, Ginger Alden, lying unconscious on the floor of the master suite bathroom. Elvis was quickly taken by ambulance to the Baptist Memorial Hospital and, after attempts to revive him failed, was pronounced dead at 3:30 pm.

What caused his death?
Though Elvis's actual cause of death appears to have been heart failure, the cardiac incident is now considered to be a result of the rock star's longstanding and serious drug abuse.

Like many performers at the time, Elvis was a heavy user of a number of prescription medications including opiates, barbiturates, and sedatives. When the toxicology analysis of the performer's blood came back several weeks after his death, it reportedly showed high dosages of the opiates Dilaudid, Percodan, and Demerol, as well as Quaaludes and codeine, among others.

In the years following his death, Elvis' Memphis physician, Dr. George Nichopoulos aka "Dr. Nick" was implicated in the singer's death. In 1980, Nichopoulos, who began treating the star in 1967, had his medical license suspended by the state of Tennessee for three months for indiscriminately prescribing and dispensing controlled substances. According to the charges, in the last 20 months of Elvis's life, the star was prescribed over 12,000 pills and other pharmaceuticals, and carried three suitcases of them with him when he traveled. (As an explanation for the volume, Nichopoulos argued that these drugs were for the use of Elvis's entire entourage).

Nichopoulos later testified that he gave Elvis any medications he requested because if he didn't the star would simply get them from another prescriber, or possibly turn to street drugs.

In November of 1981, Nichopoulos was charged with 11 felony counts of overprescribing drugs, but was acquitted. He maintained his medical license until 1995 when it was permanently suspended by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.

Why is there controversy around Elvis's death?
While Elvis's drug use (a trait he shared with many famous performers of the era including Johnny Cash and fellow Dr. Nichopoulos patient Jerry Lee Lewis) is common knowledge today, at the time of his death, Elvis, his family, and his team had largely managed to keep the more sordid details of his life private.

Immediately following the singer's passing, his family requested a private autopsy to determine the cause of death. Tennessee’s Chief Medical Examiner Jerry Francisco released the star's official death certificate a few days later, listing the cause as a coronary issue unrelated to drugs. “Elvis Presley died of heart disease, and prescription drugs found in his blood were not a contributing factor,” Francisco told American Medical News at the time. “Had these drugs not been there, he still would have died.”

Several of the other pathologists involved in the autopsy would go on to criticize Francisco's tactics (he was apparently favoring the family's privacy with his swift announcement) and conclusion. Multiple doctors involved reportedly argued that the musician's cause of death should have been attributed to a toxic combination of pharmaceuticals.

With the autopsy request coming directly from the family rather than at the state's behest, the full findings were sealed after the procedure. Multiple attempts were made over the years to get the documents unsealed, and a 1993 reopening of the investigation into Elvis's death was able to get the physician's notes, but not the autopsy itself, released.

Coincidentally Ballantine Books published a tell-all book, Elvis: What Happened? by Steve Dunleavy, including stories from three of Elvis's former body guards, just over two weeks before the star's death. The book debuted with little fanfare and only became well-known once journalists and the public began denigrating Dunleavy, a former tabloid reporter, over his allegations about Elvis's drug use and carousing.

It wasn't until almost two years after Elvis's death that the possibility of drug connection began to be seriously reported.

The series has managed to air various Nickelodeon feeds internationally with Nicktoons set to debut it globally. Of course, Nickelodeon hasn't picked up the show just yet for audiences in Africa which could be the reason for its absence on Nicktoons.

Local is lekker on e.tv

The South African competition reality show Ultimate Braai Master will be back for an 8th season in 2023 on e.tv and will be switching to the Western Cape, with creator Justin Bonello stepping away as host but retaining judges Peter Goffe-Wood and Benny Masekwameng.

The 8th season of Ultimate Braai Master will feature 10 teams having to braai all kinds of food in various locations in all kinds of manner, and will be filmed in the Western Cape. The upcoming season plans to "showcase the wealth of produce celebrated in the region, from free range dairy and grain fed cattle, to fresh grown organic vegetables from farm to braai to table".

BET to be made available to DStv Family and Access customers

BET an international entertainment channel owned by Paramount which is meant to cater for black audiences between the ages of 18-49 with shows like The Oval, Black Ink Crew and Mary Mary is said to be made available to more DStv customers from 26 September.

After launching as BET International in 2014 to DStv Family package, the pay-tv company opted to split the brand in half leaving those on the lower package with scraps before finally merging it back to a single channel after a year.

The expansion of BET to more DStv customers means viewers will be able to see the local drama Redemption while as Family customers will finally gain back the channel even though there's hardly much to browse on the brand aside from repeats.
