Development Alert: Disney Junior To Close In Scandinavia By The End Of March, Merges With Disney Channel

As mentioned moments ago, Disney will continue to reduce their linear portfolio in parts of Europe with Disney Junior exiting Scandinavia by the end of March. This comes a month after the channel closed in Nordic as the latter folds under Disney Channel.

In Africa, these brands will continue to operate separately for another 3 years as Disney and MultiChoice extended their partnership. This also includes factual and wildlife brands National Geographic and National Geographic Wild and the two ESPN channels.

Press release regarding the closure

On April 1 this year, the existing channels Disney Channel and Disney Junior will merge, forming a new Disney Channel. The new Disney Channel is described as a flagship channel for all ages, and will, among other things, offer a special Disney Junior block on mornings and weekends.

Series to look forward to on the channel include
"Spidey and his Amazing Friends," "Star Wars: The Adventures of Young Jedi" and "Ariel."

Hans van Rijn, who is the country manager and senior vice president of The Walt Disney Company Nordic & Baltic, comments on the merger: "We are proud and happy to be able to present the strongest tableau ever during the successful 20 years that the Disney Channel has been in existence in the north. The merger with Disney Junior gives us the opportunity to create an additional fully-fed Disney Channel with the absolute most popular and beloved content for young fans of all ages based on solid viewership analytics and engagement data.”

News Shorts: Disney Channel's Southern Africa Feed Is Being Reduced Across Europe, Broken Bonds Makes It's Freemium Debut On eExtra And ST Movies Channel Relaunches On StarSat Channel 101

Disney Channel is going bust

Now it has been reported that more European feeds might be looking to exit the Southern African feed following its induction in 2023. This was after a viewer had spotted Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur and 44 Cats shows not seen on Disney Channel.

Considering the launch of the Nordic feed is a few hours away, it's likely that more regions are looking to align their offering. Aside from 44 Cats and Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur, the viewer had also spotted Pupstruction alongside various content from Disney Junior.

Unlike Africa, Disney Junior is also going dark on Disney Junior in Scandinavia by the end of March.
More Zee World repeats on Openview

During the week, it was reported that Katti Batti would be rolling out on eExtra this was after the channel provided various details pertaining to the 2018 series. As seen through various platforms, that is no longer the case as the channel adds Broken Bonds from Zee World.

Broken Bonds focuses on the lives of Shubhra, Kuldeep and their kids Roli and Rishi. After 10 years of their marriage, cracks start developing in Shubhra and Kuldeep’s relationship. Will Rishi and Roli succeed in erasing the differences between their parents?

Originally titled Kyun Rishton Mein Katti Batti, it starts 4 March at 14:35 on eExtra.
St Movies Channel on StarSat

After ripping away TNT back in 2023 following contractual issues with Warner Bros. Discovery. StarSat decided to revive St Movies on channel 101 from 10 March following an abrupt end of the open window of the current St Movies Plus on channel 100.

St Movies Channel is a channel dedicated to Hollywood films, presenting the world's finest movies to our viewers. In partnership with several major Hollywood studios, the channel's line-up will consist of various genres including action, romance, comedy, and mystery.

StarSat remains silent on which package St Movies Channel will be allocated on but if we had to guess it will probably be available to the same consumers as TNT when it first broadcast on the platform.

Why eToonz Now Offers Shows Like MasterChef Junior?

eToonz is South Africa's first free-to-air children's channel operated by eMedia Investments. It broadcasts daily at 6am with preschool shows like Peppa Pig, Postman Pat and Bob The Builder alongside with other content like Trollstopia, All Hail King Julien and Ninjago.

Launched in 2013, eToonz initially served as a preschool filtered brand and to date remains as the only youth brand on Openview to feature animated and live-action shows. Despite the rise in competiton with MultiChoice ramping up a duplicate offering on Play Room.

There was a lot of commotion pertaining to its performance regardless eMedia Investments had continued to bolster the entertainment. The channel now offers its own slate of live-action something formerly offered on Craze on top getting more first run programs.

As seen in recent months, eMedia Investments opted to add MasterChef Junior from eReality to eToonz current line-up. The inclusion of MasterChef Junior would further expand its line-up.

Openview launched in 2013 and as mentioned eMedia Investments remains hush hush on eToonz performance. There's been rumours that not much consumption is being poured on the brand as sources site Openview's demographic for the low numbers.

If anything, the inclusion of MasterChef Junior helps draw in numbers as well as more mature content like The Thundermans, Hank Zipzer and Backstage. Such content is relatable with fiction cast aside viewers are able to envision themselves within these characters.

Canal+ Forced To Acquire Remaining Shares In MultiChoice

The Groupe Canal+ approach to MultiChoice Group has taken a dramatic turn: the Takeover Regulation Panel (TRP) has ruled that the French broadcaster must make a “mandatory offer” to the JSE-listed firm’s shareholders.

MultiChoice had earlier spurned the Canal+ offer and told its shareholders that they no longer had to exercise caution in trading in the group’s shares.

“Shareholders are advised that the TRP issued a ruling on 27 February to the effect that Canal+ has acquired 35.01% of the voting rights in MultiChoice and, accordingly, a mandatory offer in terms of section 123 of the [Companies Act] has been triggered,” MultiChoice said in a statement to shareholders on Wednesday.

Canal+ is required to make the mandatory offer immediately, in line with the requirements of the act
“Canal+ is therefore required to make the mandatory offer immediately, in line with the requirements of the act and the regulations,” the parent of DStv and Showmax said.

On 6 February, the TRP said it was investigating the offer made by Canal+ after MultiChoice ended potential buying talks with its largest shareholder.

On 1 February, Canal+ said it had offered R105/share for every MultiChoice share it did not already own. It said the offer — worth an estimated R31.7-billion, and representing a 40% premium to MultiChoice’s closing share price of R75 on 31 January.

The offer price was rejected by the continent’s biggest pay-TV company, saying it significantly undervalued the group. MultiChoice said, however, it was open to talk to anyone about any deal provided it was at a fair price.

Threshold

By buying a stake beyond 35%, Canal+ had exceeded the threshold at which South African law requires a company to make a mandatory offer to shareholders. However, MultiChoice asked the TRP to make a ruling on whether such an offer was required.

“The TRP contended that the publication of…the announcement without the approval of the TRP was unlawful, being in contravention of the act and the regulations, and issued a compliance notice against MultiChoice,” the broadcaster said in its statement on Wednesday.

Development Alert: YouTube Kids Currently Seen On DStv Explora Ultra Is Being Discontinued On Various Platforms

Google integrated YouTube Kids directly inside the main YouTube app for TVs last year. However, the company has continued up until now to run the standalone YouTube Kids app on smart TVs, streaming devices, and gaming consoles.

In July, though, Google will pull the plug on the standalone YouTube Kids app on those devices. According to 9to5Google, the outlet confirmed with the company that the YouTube kids app will be pulled from smart TVs as well as streaming devices and game consoles.

YouTube Kids will continue to exist as a standalone app on iOS and Android devices.

Google's move to remove the YouTube Kids app from those platforms comes shortly after other big changeups in kids-oriented platforms and apps.

Earlier this year, Paramount completely killed off its standalone Nickelodeon app, where kids were able to watch clips and full episodes of their favorite Nick Jr. and Nicktoons shows. A pop-up message told users that they would need to go directly to the Nickelodeon website to continue to access their content. Following that move, Paramount also shut down the standalone subscription platform for Noggin, a Nickelodeon-affiliated brand that provided content for preschool-aged children, earlier this month.

Unlike those platforms, YouTube Kids is not going away entirely. Parents will be able to set YouTube Kids profiles in the main YouTube app and then select that profile in the "Who's watching" section in order to access the YouTube Kids platform. Parental control settings and other YouTube Kids features will still be available within those profiles.

News Shorts: MultiChoice Rumoured To Be Adding Crown TV To The DStv Platform And Dora To Premiere On Nick Jr. Channels Globally By April 15th

Crown TV to rollout on DStv

Crown Television is Zambian based TV channel operated by Crown Communications that is female managed and consists of young journalists. Since it's inception by February 2021, the channel is currently packaged on TopStar and the StarTimes app.

The channel is more familiar with their impartial, authentic and independent news slots Truth To Be Told and Grand News. It also features reality and drama series like Four Doors, Uwauma Nafyala, Rhumba Show, The Royal Breakfast Show and Valor Woman.

This past week, several consumers had spotted Crown TV under the test card for CBC on DStv leading some to believe that a partnership could be brewing between Crown Communications and MultiChoice.
Dora makes a landing

Paramount+ celebrates the triumphant return of iconic Latina heroine Dora the Explorer with the reveal of the official trailer and key art for the upcoming original preschool series DORA. Produced by Nickelodeon Animation and featuring 26 CG-animated 11-minute episodes, DORA will premiere on Friday, April 12, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia. Twenty episodes will be available to stream in all Paramount+ international markets outside of France and Japan on April 12. The series will also air on Nick Jr. internationally.

With all-new CG animation and imaginative character-driven storylines, the upcoming DORA series follows everyone’s favorite bilingual explorer, Dora (Diana Zermeño), and her best monkey friend, Boots (Asher Colton Spence), as they embark on epic adventures in a fantastical rainforest. Guided by trustworthy Map (Anairis Quiñones), Dora and her friends must work together to overcome many obstacles while being challenged by the sneakiest fox, Swiper (Marc Weiner). Kathleen Herles, the original voice of Dora the Explorer, returns to the new series as Mami, and Mike Smith Rivera joins the cast as Papi.

As Expected, Warner Bros. Discovery Ends Merger Negotiations With Paramount

Warner Bros. Discovery has gone "pencils down" on a potential acquisition of Paramount Global, halting talks after several months of kicking the tires on merging the media companies, according to people familiar with the matter.

Skydance Media, the film and TV studio run by David Ellison, is still performing due diligence on a potential transaction, two of the people said.

Paramount Global has set up a special committee, which has hired its own financial advisor, to sift through potential bids for the whole company or certain assets. Media mogul Byron Allen offered $14 billion for the company last month, though he has a history of bidding on and not buying large media assets.

Comcast, the owner of CNBC parent NBCUniversal, isn't interested in acquiring Paramount Global assets, one of the people said. Comcast has been working with house bankers to explore a potential commercial partnership with Paramount Global, according to people familiar with the matter.

That could include bundling or merging streaming services Peacock and Paramount+, as previously reported by The Wall Street Journal, or a different arrangement. Still, it's unclear if Paramount Global would have interest in this as it explores sale scenarios.

Spokespeople for Comcast, Paramount Global, Skydance Media and Warner Bros. Discovery declined to comment.

PBS Kids Unveils Slate Of Content Including New Series ‘Tiny Time Travel’ and ‘Milo,’ Movies Based On ‘Wild Kratts’ And ‘Nature Cat’

PBS Kids has lined up a slate of new series, movies and shorts for audiences across the United States and later around the world.

The slate includes the premiere of Tiny Time Travel, a series of live-action shorts, along with new Wild Kratts and Nature Cat movies. In addition, PBS Kids will debut season four of Molly of Denali, along with new series Milo, new shorts series Donkey Hodie Bedtime Stories and new episodes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.

PBS Kids, which targets children ages 2-8, aims to help children “to see themselves uniquely reflected and celebrated in lovable, diverse characters who serve as positive role models and to explore their feelings and discover new adventures along the way.”

“This spring, PBS Kids provides an opportunity for families to embark on exciting adventures with kids’ favorite characters, and a chance to meet some new ones, too,” said Sara DeWitt, senior vp and general manager of PBS Kids. “Our content this season aims to nurture an appreciation of the natural world among our young audiences while also sharing important life lessons and reinforcing some of the key social skills kids need for success in school and beyond.”

Kicking off the spring lineup on March 15 is Tiny Time Travel, a new series of “funny and fast-paced” live-action shorts. The series follows an 11-year-old inventor, Tyler, and his outgoing best friend, Tony, as they use their time machine to go back in time a tiny bit (sometimes just a few minutes or hours) to solve problems in their neighborhood, like stopping a friend from spoiling a movie or giving a customer a re-do after an ordering mistake at a restaurant.

The show, aimed at kids ages 5-8, teaches social language skills, like understanding nonverbal communication; taking others’ perspectives into account; and resolving miscommunication. The series is created by Tim McKeon (Odd Squad, Gravity Falls) and produced by Marobru Productions and Easy as Pie Productions.

Molly of Denali, which will return March 25, follows the adventures of 10-year-old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native girl who lives in the fictional village of Qyah, Alaska. The new episodes follow Molly as she continues exploring with friends and family, from tracking down a fallen meteorite with Tooey, to connecting with her heritage by building a kiidhah zhee (a traditional steam bath) to help cure her mom’s cold, to helping a rival basketball team find an authentic mascot to represent their team. The show, produced by GBH Boston, also incorporates media literacy learning.

Meanwhile, the Wild Kratts and Nature Cat movies, derived from the two series, premiere April 1 and April 22, respectively. A new Wild Kratts game, “World Rescue,” will be available on the PBS Kids Games app and pbskids.org, with new episodes of the show premiering April 2. Meanwhile, the Nature Cat movie features three original songs written by Tony, Grammy and Emmy winner Bill Sherman and performed by the cast: Taran Killam, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan and Kate Micucci. Chris Parnell is also in the voice cast. In addition, a new short-form series, Nature Chat With Nature Cat, will debut digitally on April 22.

Another new series, Milo, will premiere across PBS Kids streaming platforms on May 13. The show, co-produced by Fourth Wall and DeAPlaneta Entertainment, follows an adventurous cat who loves to use role-play to explore the amazing world of jobs and vocations with his best friends, Lofty and Lark. Milo, who loves meeting all of the different people who come into his parents’ dry-cleaning shop, is curious about what it would be like to be a fireman, detective, astronaut and many other kinds of jobs when he grows up.

Meanwhile, new episodes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood premiere May 6, exploring concepts like putting things away and finding surprises wherever we are.

New short form series Donkey Hodie Bedtime Stories, which premieres May 27 across streaming platforms, derive from the puppet series Donkey Hodie. The shorts are designed to fit into kids’ bedtime routines and feature characters reading bedtime stories and showing their strategy for calming down before bed.

Development Alert: Colors TV And StarPlus Owners Reliance And Disney Star Agree To Merge Media Business

In a mega deal in the entertainment segment, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Walt Disney Co have signed a binding agreement to merge their media operations in India, according to a Bloomberg report.

As per the agreement, the media unit of Reliance and its affiliates are expected to own at least 61 per cent in the merged entity, with Disney holding the rest.

Disney reportedly agreed to sell 61 per cent of its India business to Viacom 18 at a valuation of $3.9 billion. Viacom18 is owned by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani.

There were reports earlier this month that Disney had agreed to sell 60 per per cent of its Indian business to Viacom18. The deal is expected to be a significant move in the Indian media and entertainment industry.

Last month, Sony of Japan dropped its merger plan with Zee Entertainment ended due to disagreements regarding the leadership of the proposed merged media entity.

In the line of fire from activist shareholder Nelson Peltz for poor succession planning, Disney recently appointed two new directors – Morgan Stanley CEO James Gormon and former group chief executive at Sky Sir Jeremy Darroch, late November. In the same month, Walt Disney CEO Iger said on an earnings call in November that the company was “considering options” but that it would like to stay on in India and try and “strengthen our hand, improve the bottom line”.

Cola Wars greenlit by Sony

Sony has stepped up with a seven figure bid to uncap Cola Wars, a movie pitch that tells the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola, sparking the unforgettable “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s. This behind-the-scenes account, from Michael Jackson’s fiery mishap to the New Coke debacle, tells the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender vying for the No. 1 spot. Sources said it was around $1.5 million while Sony said it was $1 million, still a whopping deal for a pitch.

It falls into place alongside films about products like the Ben Affleck-directed Air, about the battle by Nike to win Michael Jordan for a shoe line that transformed the company. There were rival bids massing with elements attached, but Sony stepped up. Maia Eyre, the exec who oversaw the hit Anyone But You, will shepherd this one.

Openview Shorts: uBettina Wethu Cancelled On e.tv After 4 Seasons With New Episodes On eSeries, SABC 3 Adds Afrikaans News And Other Content To Its Line-up This March And Chrysalis To Return With A Season 2 This April On eExtra

uBettina Wethu moving to eSeries, Isiphethu and untitled drama in development

Last year, the public broadcaster decided to make budget cuts by cancelling 7de Laan after 23 years on air with uBettina Wethu that was revived on e.tv. Since its debut on e.tv, the fashion drama had to captivate audiences in both 18:30 and 20:30 timeslots.

Unlike Nikiwe, the show wasn't present in the channel's top 20 offering as seen with Scandal, House Of Zwide and Isitha: The Enemy. It wouldn't be shocking if season 4 were to be its last as repeats broadcast at 16:10.

As reported on social platforms, new episodes of uBettina Wethu season 4 will air on eSeries at 18:25 with repeats of eKasi: Our Stories on e.tv in that timeslot. The channel is said to be working on two local dramas one titled Isiphethu and the second is in Afrikaans.
SABC undergoing schedule changes

During the week, it was reported that SABC had cancelled FOKUS one of the few Afrikaans programs on SABC 2. As plans are underway to move further Afrikaans content like Voetspore and 50/50 to SABC 3 exclusively but the problem with that is the lack of viewers.

Vetkoekpaleis was only able to pull around 800,000 viewers on SABC 2 in December while SABC 3 is currently sitting with 400,000. Other than that, SABC hasn't been producing much content for this audience and such move could lead to surge in viewers for eExtra's Kuiertyd and kykNET.

From what we can confirm Nuus will be airing on SABC 3 at 20:30 from March 4th serving as the only weekday Afrikaans offering. 50/50 and Voetspore will serve as weekly offerings therefore maxing out the offering - details of a date and time have yet to be mentioned.
Chrysalis returns to eExtra

Ahead of the second and possible third and final season debut, eExtra's Kuiertyd will be adding its first drama series from the Czech Republic titled Soos Nag En Dag by March 4th. The series consists of 26 episodes giving Chrysalis an open window by April 9th in the same timeslot.

The drama followed Nalan who seems perfect from the outside, was being severely abused by her mother. Sedat, one of the richest men in Turkey, proposes to her. But her husband and family, who seem perfect from the outside, are not normal either.

Could Boomerang Also Be Shutting Down Soon In The UK?

Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery launched Cartoonito as a 24 hour service across Europe, Asia and Africa after launching as a programming block years prior. It was met with positive reception from consumers for the likes of Lucas The Spider and Thomas And Friends.

As some readers are aware, Boomerang still resides in the UK and Italy as a 24 hour channel outside of Cartoonito which is a channel of its own. One of which, the UK come with a separate offering as Boomerang revolves most of its content on Looney Tunes, Tom And Jerry and Scooby-Doo.

During the month, it was reported that Bugs Bunny Builders and various other preschool content had been removed from Cartoonito in the Nordic market. Now there's word that Mr. Bean: The Animated Series and Grizzy And The Lemmings had been added to the channel's line-up in the UK.

Although this isn't a clear indicator of possible terminaton, Warner Bros. Discovery had been going through various restructuring in recent months. Discovery Science and Discovery Turbo Xtra exited various parts of Europe with Cartoonito leaving parts of Asia.

With the likes of streaming these days, it makes Boomerang feels obsolete I mean the channel lost purpose in other countries when Warner Bros. Discovery put more emphasis on Cartoonito. But the biggest downfall for the UK and remaining feeds was the failure to add new content.

After the UK feed of Cartoonito rebranded, Warner Bros. Discovery had attempted to sort of bolster Boomerang's line-up with Ninjago. Unlike most parts of Europe and Africa, linear consumption has experienced the most falls in the UK so the idea of closure wouldn't be surprising.

Prior to this, TCM resided in the market weirdly as TCM Movies and as seen in other parts of the world got the boot and Boomerang has been hovering around this circle for sometime now.

WarnerMount Discovery: Could This Be What Awaits Warner Bros. Discovery And Paramount Global In The Coming Months?

Since last year, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global held talks of a potential merger. The news led to media outrage with #blockthemerger trending on X as a merger would lead to more layoffs and reduction in content output.

Not long ago, Paramount Global announced that they'd be laying off 800 employees due to the effects of streaming as the company is looking to transform. Prior to this, the parent company Amusement Park was looking to sell their shares in the company.

Aside from Warner Bros. Discovery, they also garnered interest from Skydance Media, Apollo Management and Byron Allen Group.

As some readers are aware, the formation of WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. prevented the company from making any transaction call (merger) for at least another 2 years and with that stipulation set to expire soon it has brought a lot of fear amongst readers.

One of which was the possible merger of these two companies and also the exit of Discovery Inc. with the company likely to be sold to Amazon etc. Although the deadline for the merger is approaching the chances of a merger seem unlikely.

If anything, it's likely that Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery will probably explore other ways of working together. Merger talks with NBCUniversal are still in early discussion and so it kind of gives Warner Bros. Discovery a chance to make a better offer.

Popeye the spinach-chomping sailor was a childhood hero to millions and has made a name for himself all around the globe. Still, for those who have somehow managed not to encounter Popeye, let’s go over the basics. Here’s how Encyclopedia Britannica defines the fictitious sailor:

Popeye is a scrappy little seaman with bulging forearms, a squinty eye, and a screwed-up face, punctuated with an ever-present pipe in his mouth. He is always ready for a fight instead of a reasonable discussion, has a gravelly voice, and is constantly mumbling under his breath. His credo is ‘I yam what I yam, and that’s all what I yam.’ His girlfriend is the gangly, uncoordinated Olive Oyl, for whose attention Popeye vies constantly with Bluto, his bearded, hulking rival.

The character of Popeye was created by Elzie Crisler Segar, an American cartoonist from the town of Chester, Illinois. In 1919, the draughtsman created a comic strip in New York’s Evening Journal, called Thimble Theatre. In 1929, Popeye made his debut as a new character in the strip. Due to the newcomer’s high appeal, the strip was eventually renamed Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye. For decades to come, the character enjoyed immense popularity, appearing in dozens of iterations by various creators – in Fleischer Studios’ animated cartoons or in Robert Altman’s 1980 musical Popeye with Robin Williams in the lead role.

Interestingly, many claim the fictitious sailor was based on a real-life person, one of the citizens of E.C. Segar’s hometown. The man in question is believed to have been Frank ‘Rocky’ Fiegel, whose parents came from Poland.

A heart of gold

The 1979 article Chester Man Accepted as Real-Life Popeye was a Brawler, Loved Kids ran by the Southern Illinoisan newspaper mentions that some citizens of Chester considered Rocky ‘a bum.’ It goes on to explain how this came to be:

Fiegel, a bartender and general labourer around Chester, seldom had steady work and was often seen loafing around the town’s saloons. He lived with his mother until she died, then continued living in the house alone (…)

But it isn’t, of course, the lack of regular employment that’s said to have inspired E.C. Segar. Frank Fiegel was a local brawler, famous for his fist-fighting skills and this is where we really start seeing resemblance to the cartoon Popeye. In the article Rocky’s nephew, Clyde Feegie, recounts a story of his uncle visiting a saloon:

They had two big guys inside who said you had to buy drinks for the house or put on the gloves. They had a big bruiser waiting to fight, but he (Fiegel) put on the gloves and knocked their guy out.

According to Fred M. Grandinetti’s 2003 book Popeye: An Illustrated Cultural History, also Rocky’s facial features and pipe were reflected in the cartoon character:

Because of his hardened physique he was affectionately known as ‘Rocky’. His angular jaw and familiar corn-cob pipe apparently impressed the young Segar.

Indeed, such a figure like Rocky could’ve made a strong impression on Segar, especially since the prospective cartoonist was much younger than him. Fiegel was born in 1868 (it’s unclear whether that was in Poland or in America), whereas E. C. Segar was only born in 1894. Moreover, the Polish-American had ‘a heart of gold for children’ as the Chicago Tribune phrased it. He was known to have selflessly helped out Chester kids, giving them change or protecting them from bullies. That’s another similarity to Popeye who was always a ‘good guy.’

A joke or a prank

Frank’s parents, Anna and Bartłomiej, were Polish. According to the MyHeritage, a genealogy website, the family had ties to the town of Czarnków in today’s central Poland and their surname was originally spelled ‘Figiel’. It was most probably altered to better fit the English-speaking realities of America after the family emigrated there. Curiously, the Polish word ‘Figiel’ means ‘joke’ or ‘prank’, a rather fitting surname for the protoplast of a comic strip hero…

But whether Rocky himself knew that he became the inspiration for Popeye is uncertain. Some say that he learned of this only after Segar’s death of leukaemia in 1938, from a newspaper that printed the story of the comic strip creator and his inspirations. Others, like Popeye historian Michael Brooks, claim that Fiegel received checks from Segar on a regular basis, as a sort of thank-you for the success of the hero based on him. Then again others doubt that Fiegel ‘ever knew he was Popeye.’ Segar moved out of Chester in the early 1920s – years before the character debuted – and according to the 2003 book Comic Strip Artists in American Newspapers by Moira Reynolds, he never actually acknowledged anybody as a real-life inspiration for the famous sailor.

However, what seems to back the story of Rocky being the inspiration is that a number of early-20th-century Chester locals were awfully similar to other characters in Segar’s Thimble Theatre. Olive Oyl, is said to have been modelled after Dora Paskel, a store owner who was ‘unusually tall and thin and wore a bun at the nape of her neck,’ as the New York Times puts it. The chubby, hamburger-loving J. Wellington Wimpy was supposedly based on William Schuchert, the heavyset manager of the Chester Opera House (where Segar had worked for a while) and a known lover of burgers.

What’s beyond any doubt is that the gravestone of Frank Fiegel, who passed away in 1947, can be found at Chester’s Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The inscription on it says:

Above the inscription you can find an engraving showing the original, 1929 version of Popeye. Of all the hero’s various iterations, the first one, created by Segar, is said to be the one most reminiscent of Rocky.

A friendship between two wanderers

During both Rocky’s and Segar’s lifetimes, Popeye became so popular that the Thimble Theatre comic strips were printed in hundreds of newspapers, even overseas – for instance in Italy, the sailor was known as Braccio di Ferro which means ‘Iron Arm’. In Poland, Popeye’s adventures appeared under two titles: Marynarz Kubuś (Jacob the Sailor Man) and Ferdek i Merdek, Dzieje Przyjaźni Dwóch Łazików (Ferdek & Merdek: The Story of A Friendship Between Two Wanderers). The latter title looks like it may need a bit of explaining: its first part consists of the Polish names that were given to Popeye and Wimpy respectively, whereas the second part… Well, it looks like a free take on the task of presenting the comic strip to the local public. In post-war Poland, however, Popeye was known simply as Popeye.

Speaking of Poland, it doesn’t seem like the town of Czarnków has in any way recognized its ties to the real-life Popeye’s ancestors. A search of the town’s official website reveals no mention of Frank ‘Rocky’ Fiegel. But there is a town, other than Chester, which has made the claim of being the birth place of Popeye – Santa Monica, California, where E.C. Segar moved after having lived in places like Chicago and New York. Here’s an excerpt from a 2009 report titled The Bay Builders Exchange found on Santa Monica’s official website:

When Segar moved to Santa Monica in 1928, he often found inspiration for characters and storylines on the Santa Monica Pier. Although some believe Segar’s characters were inspired by his Midwest upbringing, according to oral history, the Popeye character was modelled on an expert Norwegian fisherman, ‘Santa Monica Olsen,’ who had exotic fishing tales, a heavy Norwegian accent, and rough language.

What appears to back this version of events is that the character of Popeye debuted only a year after Segar moved to Santa Monica. But, due to the lack of compelling evidence, there is no room for definitive declarations here. Perhaps, the character of Popeye was a mash-up, including some traits of Rocky and some of Olsen…

Since E.C. Segar apparently never singled anybody out as the inspiration for Popeye we’re left with speculation. And Frank ‘Rocky’ Fiegel is definitely a strong contestant for that role, due to his undeniable links both to the author and the fictitious hero. So whenever ‘you eats your spinach’ you should remember that it’ll make you not only as strong as Popeye, but (perhaps) also as strong as his real-life, Polish protoplast.

Recap To Last Year: SABC 2 Has Lost 300,000 Viewers Following The Relaunch Of Snoozefest Vetkoek Paleis And Cancellation Of 7de Laan

Last year, the public broadcaster decided to end 7de Laan after its 23 year run with the last episode accumulating 800,000. It was since then replaced by a rebroadcast of 90s sitcom Vetkoekpaleis as the public broadcaster struggles to source income for more new content.

Following the series inception, Vetkoekpaleis was only able to pull 600,000 viewers in December making it 200,000 viewers short from 7de Laan. News of its re-entry was met with backlash from devoted SABC fans with most opting to rival stations like eExtra and kykNET.

This was proven as Vetkoekpaleis which was ranked in the top 5 viewed content on SABC 2 in December is now under the the top 10 from last month. Even more embarassing is how Nuus managed to accumulate more viewers than the actual repeat.

During the month, it was reported that the public broadcaster had cancelled FOKUS and will move remaining Afrikaans programs such as 50/50 and Nuus to SABC 3. While as other shows such as  Vetkoekpaleis will continue to air on SABC 2 most probably until it's ends.

This news similar to the induction of Vetkoekpaleis wasn't sitting well with some viewers. If anything, the move to SABC 3 will likely lead to a drop in consumption for shows to have stayed back on SABC 2 such as Vetkoekpaleis and probably lead more viewers to opt for rivals.

SABC hasn't been producing much content for this audience that some had only tuned into SABC 2 for 7de Laan. With less content hoping aboard SABC 3, this won't look good for their viewership and if anything probably endangers the possibility of a follow-up to 7de Laan.

Recap To Last Month: uMbali Makes History And Becomes The First Late Night Series Debuts In The Top 10 On e.tv, Vetkoekpaleis Continues To Be A Rating Disappointment On SABC 2

uMbali is garnering attention

After debuting on e.tv by October 2023, uMbali has proved to be a ratings success the first in the 22:00 timeslot as the series enters at the #11 spot from last month accumulating 1.8 million viewers. Other shows like Is'pindiselo crossed the 2 million when it aired on Sunday.

After eMedia Investments had opted to allocated these shows on weekdays neither Is'pindiselo or Housewives got the time of day after undergoing several timeslot changes as eMedia Investments continues to position e.tv in the leagues of SABC 1 and Mzansi Magic.
Viewers continue to boycott Vetkoekpaleis

After 7de Laan ended its run on SABC 2, the series was reported to have accumulated 800,000 viewers on its last episode. With the public broadcaster low on income substituted the drama with a 90s sitcom, Vetkoekpaleis.

Since it's inception, Vetkoekpaleis pulled 600,000 viewers following its reentry to primetime in December and after a month it currently sits with 500,000 viewers making it 100,000 viewers short as consumers migrate to eExtra's Kuiertyd and kykNET on DStv.

Why Yu-Gi-Oh Is Getting A Lot Of Backlash On SABC 2?

SABC 2 is the public broadcaster's second free-to-air channel which boasts a variety of content ranging from news, music, reality shows, movies and drama series. It had also garnered popularity for its 5pm timeslot which featured anime like Dragonball, Bleach and One Piece.

As seen in the past year, Yu-Gi-Oh had taken over the channel so much so that viewers aren't tuning into SABC 2 in that timeslot. When Dragonball debuted it formed one of the top 10 most watched shows on the channel while Yu-Gi-Oh Is not even seen in the Top 20.

As some readers are aware, SABC has been dealing with financial constraints that it's taken much longer to acquire new content. This only drives away viewers from the channel which is what "was" currently seen with Yu-Gi-Oh as SABC 2 had been repeating old seasons for almost a year.

This comes as a problem because some viewers would tune into the channel or keep tabs. Anime has a smaller market on cable TV and aside from SABC 2 there's also Toonami and Cartoon Network.

Unlike the latter, SABC 2 offered more mature content that would depict violence, strong language and other adult scenes. Other broadcasters would equip more family focused or kid friendly shows which is where Yu-Gi-Oh currently resides unfortunately.

SABC 2 for years on end would bring these type of shows to their audience and filter out the demographic of Yu-Gi-Oh. Despite once owning rights to Pokémon and Doraemon, SABC should have tried retaining offering of a similar stature while deploying shows like Bleach.

Reminder: Soos Dag En Nag, eExtra's First Series From The Czech Republic Debuts In March

eExtra, a South African based TV channel operated by eMedia Investments that distributes a variety of content from Asia, India and Turkey is to expand its catalogue with Soos Nag En Dag. It hails from the Czech Republic and will be Kuiertyd's first show from the region.

Soos Nag En Dag (Kukačky) follows two families whose lives become impossibly complicated when they discover that their 6 year old sons were switched at birth. Emotional family drama where the investigation throws up surprises for both families.

It starred Viktor Sekanina as Jakub Kadlec, Marek Adamczyk as Martin Kadlec, Marta Dancingerová as Tereza Kadlecová, Jiří Štrébl as Libor Kadlec, Veronika Freimanová as Klára Kadlecová and Luboš Veselý as Rudolf Býček.

The series debuted on Czech Republic broadcaster ČT1 by 8 January 2021 and had since then produced two seasons with 26 episodes each with a 52 minute duration. It was made with praise within the region averaging 1.5 million viewers over the age of 15.

Soos Nag En Dag is set to replace Wie Laaste Lag from 4th March on eExtra on weekdays at 20:00. Prior to this, eMedia Investments will be rolling out a new Turkish drama to the eVOD streaming service titled Gelukbringers.
