HGTV Launches Soon In Germany And Possible Next Target Is EMEA

Discovery is launching HGTV, its home and lifestyle network – and the #3 most watched US cable network – in Germany as a free to air channel. The launch of HGTV will take place in June and marks the first European launch of this brand since the Scripps acquisition – with further launches to come.

HGTV celebrates the spirit of home and its expansion into Europe will give people access to content across six pillars; buying and selling, home renovation, flipping, home improvement and dream homes. As well as an extensive library of existing content, the HGTV audience in Germany will be able to watch more than 500 hours of content per year. Key programme franchises include Flip or Flop, House Hunters, My Lottery Dream Home and Good Bones. Discovery research has identified that 209 million people across EMEA are interested in home decoration, DIY and home improvement and billions of Euros are spent each year on DIY and home improvement.

Possible New Channel And HD Channel Alert For DStv

NEW CHANNELS:
eReality was introduced as a member of the eFamily of channels owned by eMedia Investments and began broadcasting on 19 November on Openview. The channel positions itself as a broadcaster of "the world's most popular reality programmes, featuring real-life stories, fascinating personalities and human emotion in its rawest form."
The channel includes shows themed around crime, paranormal activity, nature, adventure, medical anomalies, outrageous obsessions and bizarre behaviour.

EXCLUDED:
OneZED is a general entertainment channel and home for family viewing where authentic local stories meet international narratives. The channel will be available to all DStv customers in Zambia on DStv Channel 172 from Monday, 1 April 2019. DStv customers will find the best of Zambian entertainment in ONE place with a mix of talk shows, dramedies, music shows and documentaries on OneZED.

THE HD PURGE:
SABC News (DStv 404) which is carried on MultiChoice's DStv through an exclusive clause which prevents operators like ODM's Starsat from carrying the channel.

From Monday, 1 April, eExtra viewers will enjoy a revamped schedule with their favourite eBella telenovela titles moving to the channel to create a weekday guilty pleasure afternoon block. This will be followed by a serving of some court drama, the Afrikaans and viewer favourite ‘KuierTyd’, and other riveting local and international series.

This merger of the two channels will give our audiences the best of both with a 24-hour entertainment offering. “eBella built a loyal following over the last year and gave us the opportunity to showcase and test new content that celebrates the lives of women around the world,” says MD of e.tv channels Marlon Davids. “Following the success of eBella, we are excited to incorporate our viewers’ most-loved telenovelas and series into our main schedule on eExtra. This move gives us the opportunity to provide eExtra viewers with a bigger and bolder content offering throughout the day, with all their favourite shows in one place.”

The daytime lineup will see fan favourites like Fatmagul, The Girl Named Feriha, Caribbean Flower and Naagin, to name a few, featured alongside many of the best telenovelas from Latin America, India and Turkey.

The channel will bring audiences more courtroom reality with a new series, Hot Bench. ‘KuierTyd’ will also be extended to include Die Wiel Draai and another hit local Afrikaans drama series, Vallei Van Sluiers on Sundays.

eExtra will still feature award-winning local dramas, like Umlilo and Traffic, international series’, comedies and more. eExtra is available on Openview (channel 105) and DStv (channel 195).

eExtra Switches Back To 24/7 Channel When eBella Stops Airing At The End Of March

eExtra the South African digital satellite
television channel supplied by eMedia Investments on their Openview platform as well as MultiChoice's DStv and On Digital Media (ODM) Starsat switches back to 24 hour channel from April.

The reason for the switch has to do with the shutdown of the unsuccessful female based channel eBella. Several if not most of eBella shows will be transmitted on eExtra in April as a "weekday guilty pleasure afternoon block" on the channel.

eExtra hasn't been schedule wise for sometime now which has built a major impact on the brand. You'll find some new content on this channel get the late night treatment similar to what Turner U.S. and International does with Cartoon Network and Boomerang where 2-3 shows get attention while others which are on an indefinite hiatus for some reason get the death treatment by being put weekday mornings or nights with no repeats most of the time and if there was they'd put it at a time less viewers would be tuned in so Turner's channels are way worse than eExtra. This treatment is unacceptable as it forces some viewers to distance themselves from the channel and the minute something good comes on you miss it and for those who want to see the show can't since the channel is not schedule wise.

eExtra is basically described as a premium entertainment channel in HD including sitcoms, drama series, reality, telenovelas, court shows, lifestyle and movies after the shutdown of eBella you can say weekdays eExtra became a telenovela channel with a dash of court shows, drama series and news as indicated:

When eExtra first launched the weekends always had variety so its no different even after they switch it back to 24 hours. Rumored: FlavourTV Coming Soon To DStv

As the name is suggests FlavourTV is some of food/cooking channel meaning it could be South Africa's first ever food/cooking channel.

Not much details is given about the channel except that it was made in South Africa. There's no telling if this is true or just a sham to get the media's attention.

As Yatish Bipulprasad stated the channel will launch on DStv with a new show starring him and the Mayor of Durban Hot Sauce (lol). So basically this channel will be a rival to Discovery Inc's Food Network and BBC Studios' BBC Lifestyle.

There's no telling how good the channel might be that is if its real. It was possibly commissioned by DStv as the pay-tv service is open for channel proposals (even tv shows) you've had successful ones like Moja Love (female base), TV Mall (Business, not sure for viewership) then you have non-performing channels like Voov (who watched it better yet who was it for exactly) and ANN7 (the Gupta owned channel was unorganized even when DStv knew the channel's circumstances they still chose to keep it on air at that time).

Since South Africa is a land of opportunities (sort of) and discovery hopefully we'll get a dance(ing) channel, heritage channel, clothing channel, wildlife channel, job or career channel, and a clips/video channel like YouTube.

Is OUTtv Making A Comeback To South Africa?

The Canadian LGBT+ network OUTtv commissioned a bran new show titled "Fak Yaass" which is slated for an early 2019 release. 

Fak Yaass is a series that tells the 'true' story of Nico Nicolakis' big Greek family and their journey of accepting Nico no matter his sexuality. Showing the clash between old tradition and the new age, millennial Nico struggles with the idea of returning home, somewhere he's always felt judged and unworthy. With the help of his friends, Anton and Jill, we'll watch as Nico's heart begins to let his family in and we'll see his family accept him for who he is, until a secret family scheme may ruin that forever.

According to one of the crew members which has yet to be confirmed the series will air in South Africa along with Canada, New Zealand and Australia.(pictured below)

Not only that the channel teased its return with more bold, diverse and LOCAL shows a few days after the channel closed.(pictured below)

OUTtv started on 4th October until 4th November as a one month pop-up channel on DStv Premium and Compact Plus only in South Africa featuring a range of programs from a gay bachelor looking for love, to a stripping dating show that had full frontal nudity and even a series showing what happens behind the production of a gay porn site.

OUTtv recieved complaints over a couple of shows that were mistakenly uncensored forcing the channel to remove them. The channel's boss is hopeful that it could be a permanent pay-tv channel.

Confirmed: PBS Kids Launching Soon On DStv

Thanks to MultiChoice Kenya we finally know that PBS Kids will be a permanent addition to the DStv Platform.

MultiChoice added kids content from America's PBS Kids to its DStv Catch Up service as part of the pay-TV operator's DStv Now streaming service and stated it might be used elsewhere if there's a demand for it.

There's no response as yet from MultiChoice on when PBS Kids will be added. The channel will be available to all DStv subscribers as stated by MultiChoice Kenya. In South Africa, the channel is accessible from Easyview (cheapest package only found in South Africa).

PBS Kids is the children's programming brand of America's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) that is broadcast as a kids programming block on PBS in the United States, but it is also a digital video channel streaming kids content as part of a video app that PBS launched in January 2017.

The content which is seen on the channel is currently available on DStv's Catch-Up Service through "DStv Now" until 31 May 2019.

Even The Walt Disney Company Doesn't Know Disney XD Fate!

Today we go back to Steve Hullet’s blog he answered some question mostly all of them where CN related but somebody mentioned if Disney XD is having a future project or if Disney XD will rebrand in Marvel HQ due the lack of original content Steve Hullet says that the status of the channel is quo.

When I talked to Marvel a couple weeks back, they weren’t doing Marvel HQ in Glendale. Not sure where it’s being done.

My assumption is that, at some point it will be streamed. (Prediction: eventually, most channels and most product will be streamed.) But until Diz Co. makes an announcement about Disney XD'x fate, its status can be considered quo.

At the moment Steve mentioned that 3 Spiderman specials are on the works (unsure if it will be for XD) and that future Marvel projects will go to Disney Channel (Marvel Rising) or Hulu (those 4 adult Marvel animated shows) and that Avengers Assemble is wrapping up production.

Kwese Free-To-Air Receives Permission To Broadcast TV Channels In South Africa

South African TV viewers will finally get more choice and the country's lethargic free-to-air TV industry massive new competition and content for the first time in 21 years, with South Africa's broadcasting regulator that approved a TV licence for Kwesé Free TV to start 5 freely-available TV channels.

Kwesé Free TV will bring much-needed competition and a new TV destination option besides the SABC and e.tv, after the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) decided to grant it a licence.

This is the first new, individual, commercial free-to-air TV licence awarded since e.tv launched in 1998.

As a new digital terrestrial television (DTT) commercial TV station, Kwesé Free TV was granted capacity to start one high definition (HD) TV channel and another 4 standard definition channels as part of a "multi-channel" service, somewhat similar to what eMedia Investments is doing with its Openview service.

Kwesé Free TV plans to launch a so-called "multi-channel" offering that is dramatic and that could steal viewers away from the struggling SABC and e.tv, with the broadcaster that plans to grab 2.1 million weekly viewers by its first year after launch.

Kwesé Free TV plans to broadcast Kwesé Free Sports as its HD channel, in addition to Kwesé Brave, Kwesé Focus, Kwesé Stories and Kwesé Vibes as 4 SD channels for a bouquet that will span across sports content, general entertainment, lifestyle, music and drama including soaps, telenovelas and talk shows.

Each of the 5 TV channels from Kwesé Free TV will broadcast for 24 hours per day.

Kwesé Free Sports will offer sports programming and new sports competitions and will broadcast soccer, rugby, cricket and athletics, giving viewers more and a better free-to-see sports offering targeting those who don't have access to SuperSport and who are not getting much from the SABC and e.tv in terms of sports coverage and content.

Kwesé Free Sports promises to introduce and highlight new local and community sports such as street basketball, running, skate- boarding, and car races in South Africa. The channel will carry sports bulletins. At launch 10% of programming during prime time will be local.

The Kwesé Brave channel will be dedicated to action, adventure and adrenalin targeting male viewers between 15 and 45. Most of the content on this channel will be from international acquisitions, in particular movies and series. The channel will carry entertainment news. At launch 5% of prime time programming will be local.

Kwesé Focus that could also be branded Kwesé Now, will be a type of documentary channel, providing education and information through entertaining yet "smart content", and cover technology, nature and wildlife, current affairs, history, science and business. At launch 5% of prime time programming will be local.

The Kwesé Stories channel that could also be branded Kwesé Drama, will have telenovelas, talk shows, soaps and reality shows and will promote the diversity of the South African audience. The channel will also carry entertainment news. At launch 5% of prime time programming will be locally sourced or commissioned and will include a drama series, a telenovela, talk shows and daily personality-driven stories.

Kwesé Vibes will be a lifestyle channel targeting predominantly female viewers with programming around food, art and music - a so-called "trendy channel which promotes the diversity of the young generation". This channel will have a balance between international and local content. At launch 5% of prime time programming will be locally sourced or commissioned.

Kwesé Free TV must start within two years meaning that its TV service must launch and be up and running by early-2021.

It would be able to apply for one extension, and will also have the option to apply for a delay due to special circumstances, such as further delays with South Africa's already extremely delayed switch to digital terrestrial television (DTT).

"New technologies are deeply transforming the television broadcasting industry and consumers require content that is appealing to their needs," Adv. Dimakatso Qocha of the Icasa council said when the regulator decided to open applications again.

Icasa said it was necessary to introduce more competition in South Africa's television broadcasting market.

Kwesé Free TV will have to put its own branded DTT set-top box (STB) in the market for South African viewers to get the free signals - a decoder that's able to receive the signals - or piggyback on existing STBs for TV viewers who don't have new TV sets that have built-in digital receivers and tuners.

Out of the four applications , Kwesé Free TV is the only one deemed to have a realistic expectation of actually starting a real commercial TV service that would be able to compete with e.tv and the SABC, with the others applications who were rejected for various reasons.

Icasa rejected the applications of Free to Air TV, as well as Mzwanele Manyi's Infinity Media Networks that used to run the controversial ANN7 and later rebranded Afro Worldview on DStv that was shut down.

Icasa also rejected the application of Tshwaranang Media from Sekunjalo Independent Media (SIM) that is controlled by Iqbal Survé who owns 55% of the Independent Media Group.

Icasa last looked at licensing a new free-to-air commercial TV station for South Africa in 2016 but rejected all 5 applications.

The stakeholder breakdown in Kwesé Free TV is Royal Bafokeng Holdings (through Royal Bafokeng Metix) 45%, Mosong Capital 35% and Econet 20%. The Econet Group already runs a Kwesé pay-TV and video streaming business across several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with existing infrastructure and content licensing deals.

Kwesé Free TV will be different from Econet's Kwesé TV (it's failed satellite pay-TV service that shut down in November 2018), as well as its Kwesé Play Roku and its Kwesé iflix (subscription video-on-demand services).

Econet and Kwesé already built some experience within the South African TV market through content deals like sub-licensing some of its sports rights - for instance the NBA to community TV channels like SowetoTV and 1KZN - as well as the carriage agreement of Kwesé Free Sports, a TV channel that is carried on eMedia Investments' Openview free-to-air satellite-TV service.

It's also Econet and Kwesé that again sub-licensed international soccer rights with the SABC in August 2018, making the live broadcast of some English Premier League (EPL) matches on SABC3 possible.

Kwese Free TV plans
Kwesé said that by entering the South African market at this point, it can exploit its broadcasting expertise in a market where the audiences are increasingly becoming discerning in their television content choices" and that with the shareholders' "combined knowledge, experience and expertise, will be able to offer a credible and sustainable free-to-air service to the South African audience".

"By way of a free-to-air premium sports channel, broadcast in high definition, after intensive market analysis [we] believe that it will attract a desirable market share in the relevant market. Supplementing this with carefully-selected thematic-based channels, the overall offering will be attractive to all members of any households," Kwesé Free TV says.

"Pay-TV services in South Africa are still by and large not accessible to the average TV viewer, whilst terrestrial free-to-air (FTA) platforms on offer provide a limited range of content. There is, therefore, a definite need for South Africans to have access to a rich base of free quality programming historically only available on pay-TV platforms."

Kwesé Free TV wants to grab 10% of South Africa's free-to-view TV market, estimated at a total audience of 21 million viewers within its first year of operation - a weekly audience of 2.1 million viewers, driven primarily by the Kwesé Free Sports channel.

Local content and language plans
To make and adhere to the strict local content quotas Kwesé Free TV will initially source TV content from existing suppliers to ensure that it makes launch dates, through licensing and commissioning agreements.

Kwesé Free TV says each of its 5 channels will "progressively produce and commission original content over time to meet the required local content quotas by its second year of operation".

At launch Kwesé Free TV's programming will be 100% English, but it says that over time its intention is to commission programming content in various of the official South African languages besides English, and to meet the required local content quotas by its second year of operation.

Kwesé Free TV says its "committed to the development of local content" but that "this is not possible to achieve over 5 channels at launch. Local content will be increased over time to ensure compliance".

Not a TV licence to print money
The licence to Kwesé Free TV is not one to make money - at least not for the first number of years.

Starting a TV station, especially a free-to-air one is extremely capital intensive - requiring both physical and technological infrastructure besides content costs - both in terms of licensing and creating original TV content, as well as human resources. Also, add signal distribution costs.

For several years after it launched as a startup e.tv that kept sucking up millions from investors, was dogged by reports of imminent collapse and shutdown with the terrestrial TV station that was eventually able to move out of the red but only scraped by for quite a number of years despite luring some top talent at the time from the SABC to help run it.

From my perspective it looks like Disney XD is wrapping up the show early according to sources Season 5 will be its last season while Marvel's Spider-Man is on a hiatus but also wrapping up after season 2 according to sources. If this channel does rebrand for Marvel HQ I hope this show along with Spider-Man (2017) isn't reflected on there.
