Omens Inks New Global Sales Deals For Leo The Wildlife Ranger

Singapore-based prodco Omens Studios has signed a trio of new international distribution deals for its CG-animated preschool series Leo the Wildlife Ranger.

AMC International Networks has snapped up the wildlife show’s first season (60 x 11 minutes) for the Middle East and Africa, and has picked up the rights to air season two (52 x 11 minutes) across Europe. Turkish public broadcaster TRT will air both seasons of Leo on its 24/7 children’s programming channel, TRT Çocuk. Rounding out the deals is Fairfax County Schools Districts, which will broadcast the series’ second season in the US via its elementary school channel, Red Apple 21.

To date, Omens has secured more than 50 sales for the first season of Leo the Wildlife Ranger worldwide. The toon airs on linear networks including Globo (Brazil), Canal+ (Myanmar) and Warner Bros. Discovery (EMEA), as well as VOD platforms Kidoodle.TV (Canada) and Amazon Prime (US).

Earlier in March, Singapore’s national pubcaster MediaCorp commissioned Omens to produce a refreshed version of Leo the Wildlife Ranger that puts more focus on action and character development. The story takes place after the events of the original series’ second season, and the new episodes are scheduled to launch in the first half of next year.

Omens is also expanding the Leo IP on the digital side. In May, the studio developed and launched its mobile app Leo the Wildlife Ranger Games. To date, more than 10,000 users have downloaded the app on the Apple App Store worldwide. To increase its user base further, Omens is adding three additional content packs, and will launch a Spanish version of the app before the end of the year.

Evoultion Of Kids TV: Barney's Horrifying Childhood All Documented In Peacock's I Love You, You Hate Me

For anyone who was a kid in the '90s, the lyrics "I love you, you love me/We're a happy family" probably hold a special place in your heart.

The mantra made famous by an in-costume Barney the Dinosaur on the super-popular children's series Barney & Friends preached love, acceptance and positivity. While the set was a joy-filled space for all who worked on the show, not everyone outside the TV studio was a fan of the eternally optimistic purple dino.

Peacock's new documentary series I Love You, You Hate Me dives deep into the sub culture of Barney haters who formed a community that revolted against his message of kindness.

Originally created by Texas mother Sheryl Leach as a companion for her only child, Patrick Leach, Barney eventually took off in popularity, with the PBS series becoming the network's most-watched kids' show in the '90s. And while there were many who loved the character, the show also had its share of detractors, including critics who literally bashed versions of the dinosaur and parents, fed up with that earworm of a song, who formed a not-so-secret society.

Celebs Who Appeared on Barney & Friends
From "Barney bashing" to actual death threats sent to some cast and crew, Barney became a target for hate. The success of the brand even took a toll on the Leach family and Patrick would eventually have a shocking run-in with the law no one saw coming.

Read on for the biggest bombshells and shocking revelations about the Barney backlash in I Love You, You Hate Me, now streaming on Peacock.

1. Barney Bashing Becomes a Trend

During the early '90s, critics who bonded over their hatred for the eternally optimistic children's dinosaur started a trend called "Barney bashing" in which they'd destroy dolls and toys of the character's likeness, take their rage out on Barney piñatas and even call for Barney's death.

As Travis Fox, a former University of Nebraska student, stated in the documentary, "I was the originator of a Barney bashing event at U of N at Lincoln in 1993...I think the reason we specifically went after Barney was it was the replacement to our Sesame Street. He was encroaching on our childhood. So we decided that we would kind of push back."

According to Lori Wendt, the Leach family's former babysitter, "Sheryl had a hard time understanding why someone could be so hateful and so angry over something that was made with such good intentions, with such pure heart."

2. Gay Rumors Emerge

After conservative activist Rev. Jerry Falwell accused Teletubbies character Tinky Winky of pushing a gay agenda on children in 1999, some started wondering about Barney the big purple dinosaur's sexual orientation.

The topic became material for comedians and Jon Stewart even joked once on The Daily Show, "Barney the singing dinosaur, who also happens to be purple and allegedly likes to hang out with his pals Tyrannosaurus Rex, Tyrannosaurus Lance and Tyrannosaurus Bruce."

3. The "I Hate Barney Secret Society" Is Created

Interviewee Rob Curran claimed in the doc that his daughter became "transfixed" by Barney as a toddler, much to his annoyance. "Barney only appeals to a 3-year-old mentality," he stated. "Barney just drove all the parents crazy. I realized I had to do something." So, he created "The I Hate Barney Secret Society," a newsletter and community for anti-Barney parents like him. "We are a support group for parents who have a Barney addict in the family," he explained. "I just gave a voice to all the fears of all the parents."

In just a few weeks, the newsletter got 7,000 sign-ups.

4. Barney Haters Form a Jihad

Like Curran, Sean Breen found community as the former leader of "The Jihad to Destroy Barney," an online group in which Barney haters created fan fiction with the goal of defeating fictionalized Barney villains. "Our criticism of Barney was it was all about conformity and consensus," Breen explained, "and that's a very ‘90s attitude."

5. Barney Bashing Gets Physical

In 1993 haters took Barney bashing to the next level. Citing a news report, the documentary explained how, "In a Galveston, Texas K-Mart, three boys aged 10, 11 and 12 attacked a man dressed up as Barney. They punched Barney and tried to tear off the dinosaur's head."

David Letterman even poked fun at the backlash during a Late Show episode, adding "Beat the crap out of Barney in a Texas shopping mall" to his segment "Top 10 Things That Will Get You on the Evening News."

6. Death Threats Begin

Former Barney & Friends music director Bob Singleton recounted his first experience with the Barney backlash, "The first time I really heard about Barney bashing was when I was nominated for a Grammy." While doing a radio interview about the achievement, he recalled, "There were people saying, 'His music drives me crazy. I'd just love to get my fingers around that guy's neck.' I was surprised that they felt like they wanted to do me physical harm. And it wasn't just one or two phone calls."

Singleton later unlisted his phone number. "I was in fear," he said. "I got actual death and dismemberment of my family emails. I really don't want to revisit it, that was a terrible time. It hurt so bad."

7. More Cast Members Get Threatened

Bob West, the original voice of Barney from 1988-2000, said he received similar threats. "I started getting emails, from middle school kids especially," he shared. "And some of them were very nice and some of them were absolutely hateful. They were very explicit and very violent. There was one email that asked, 'Are you the Barney that I stabbed and shot outside of New Orleans?' Then they went on to say they were going to come and find me and they were going to kill me."

8. Chicken Controversy & Lawsuits

Ted Giannoulis, the man behind famous San Diego sports mascot The Chicken, began incorporating Barney bashing into his game day comedy acts. "I decided to do a dance-off contest with Barney the Dinosaur," he recalled in the doc. "Suddenly he breaks into this great break dancing that puts me to shame." A "ticked off" Giannoulis would then tackle Barney on the field and rough the dinosaur up as fans cheered him on in the stands.

Sheryl Leach's company sued Giannoulis in 1998 for copyright infringement and asked for payment for using Barney's likeness. Unfortunately for team Barney, the law was on Giannoulis' side as he recounted from the court's dismissal of the case that his use of the character "clearly qualifies as a parody," a form of protected speech.

9. The Beginning of the End

In 1998, Sheryl decided to step away from her role at Barney & Friends. As Sloan Coleman, former SVP of Live Events, said, "Once Sheryl departed, it really was never the same again."

Then in the early 2000s, two more pivotal crew members left. Bob West walked away after more than a decade of voicing Barney ("I was bored," he explained) and David Joyner, the man inside the costume from 1991 to 2001, left to pursue other acting opportunities.

Soon after, Barney was sold to a giant media conglomerate for $275 million, and was later cancelled in 2010.

10. Kid Actors' Troubled Teens

Several child actors who appeared on Barney & Friends shared how they faced hardships after their time on the show. Pia Hamilton, who played Min from 1992 to 1996, and Hope Cervantes, who portrayed Tosha from 1992 to 1996, recalled being bullied in school and getting called names like "Barney lover" and "Barney girl." Cervantes added, "I did turn to drugs and alcohol to cope, to deal."

Ricky Carter, who played Derek from 1990 to 1995, admitted he began hanging around the wrong crowds and doing drugs after Barney. In 2004, he said he found himself in a potentially fatal situation when a supposed friend pulled a gun on him and asked for everything he had. "I jumped out the car and that's when he shot me in the spine," Carter explained. He said he was initially told he would be paralyzed for life, but after extensive therapy he was able to walk again.

11. Patrick Leach's Troubled Childhood

In a 2001 Katie Couric interview, Sheryl admitted her only child, son Patrick Leach, was bullied over his connection to the famed dinosaur.

Patrick would later have a violent run-in with a neighbor that landed him in prison, and the commutation application to shorten his prison sentence shed light into his troubled childhood. "Mr. Leach faced significant challenges as a child and entering early adulthood," Charles Mittelstadt, a Criminal Defense Investigator, quoted the commutation application document. "When he was young, his mother was busy building a successful career and his father struggled with depression. Mr. Leach's parents separated when he was 14 years old and divorced three years later. During that time Mr. Leach developed a brain tumor—benign—that was surgically removed."

12. Jim Leach's Tragic End

When Patrick was just 18, his father Jim Leach died by suicide several years after his and Sheryl's divorce.

13. Patrick Leach Shooting

By 2013, Patrick was 27 and living in Malibu. That January, Patrick shot his neighbor Erick Shanks on Shanks' property after accusing him of trespassing on his. (Shanks survived.) Patrick fled but was soon arrested with multiple firearms in his possession, according to L.A. deputy district attorney Brenda Lee.

Patrick plead no contest to assault with a deadly weapon and in 2015 was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but ultimately only served five years after a commutation.

Criminal Defense Investigator Charles Mittelstadt shared his own insight into Patrick's mental state at the time, "By him own admission he became essentially almost addicted to marijuana to where it was coping mechanism as a way to numb his emotions...It sort of amped up his anxiety and amped up his paranoia."

Roundups #142: Barney The Dinosaur Reboot Is Giving People Nightmares, TLNovelas Dumps The Pink And Dye Their Hair Blue And eMedia Investments And BBC Studios Remain Silent On Any Developments Regarding BBC UKTV

Barney is set to make his comeback by 2024

Mattel announced that they would be relaunching the Barney the Dinosaur franchise and now we have a look at the titular dino’s redesign. And, unsurprisingly, people on social media sure hate it.

The most noticeable change is that they’re going from a live-action Barney the Dinosaur to an animated version. It also appears that his colors have brightened up a bit. Other than being animated, the most noticeable change is definitely Barney’s face.

As some pointed out, it sort of looks like Barney the Dinosaur went under the knife for some plastic surgery. Buccal fat removal is a procedure that thins out the cheeks. It definitely looks like the new Barney has had a little bit of work done.

In short, if this Barney redesign isn’t for you, you could simply not watch it. According to Mattel, the series is specifically being made to teach lessons to preschool-aged kids. Maybe in another three decades when they redesign Barney the Dinosaur again, the kids who watch this new series will be complaining about how their Barney is ruined.

BBC UKTV still not available on the Openview platform

Last year, eMedia Investments and BBC Studios were gearing up for the rollout of BBC's sixth channel BBC UKTV to the market joining existing brands like BBC Brit, BBC Lifestyle, BBC Earth, BBC News and CBeebies currently seen on the DStv platform.

As of January 2023, BBC UKTV is currently available on the DStv platform offering rebroadcasts to several shows from above-mentioned channels to Access, Family and Easyview customers including Doctors, Top Gear and Come Dine With Me.

It has since then led to a clash amongst Openview consumers some even speculating that MultiChoice ripped the channel away from eMedia Investments in an exclusive deal with the BBC.

In a media enquiry with both BBC and eMedia Investments, they both remain very much silent regarding details about BBC UKTV. At the moment, eMedia Investments is gearing up for the rollout of Ultraview. What are the chances BBC UKTV will rollout thereafter?

Recap To 2022: AMC Networks, Paramount Global Push Through Major Layoffs Which Could Lead To Cutback Of Channels

It looks like The Walking Dead may not be the only thing that has come to an end at AMC Networks, which operates the AMC cable TV channel, IFC, We TV, and Sundance TV. According to The Wall Street Journal, a memo has been sent to staff warning them of major layoffs on the way.

“We of course realize that this will cause significant concern and anxiety for our employees and those who rely on AMC Networks for their livelihood,” AMC Chairman James Dolan wrote. “We do not take this lightly. We will take every step possible to minimize the impact of these actions on our community.”

All told, AMC Networks plans to lay off 20% of U.S. workers. Essentially, the reason is more people turning to streaming for their entertainment needs. AMC Networks also operates the AMC+ and Shudder streaming services, but as Dolan’s memo laid out, those services haven’t brought in enough to offset losses.

AMC International:

- The twisted origin story of RealityXtra
- Acorn TV closed down in South Africa
- AMC+ rolling out across Europe later in the year

AMC operates streaming services, but they’re not successful enough to prevent layoffs

It’s tough to think that the network that has given us shows like The Walking Dead, Mad Men and Breaking Bad has been taking such a major hit this year; their stock has dipped 40%. At least The Walking Dead series finale gave AMC+ its biggest day of viewership since it began; that’s something!

According to sources, AMC Network isn’t the only one undergoing major layoffs. Paramount Global is laying off around 30 people as the company aligns CBS Studios, Paramount TV Studios, and the Paramount+ scripted originals team.

What’s happening at Paramount Global doesn’t sound as bad as what’s going on at AMC Networks. It’s more about organization and figuring out how to make things work more efficiently for the studios. Although that doesn’t mean the layoffs don’t hurt.

Roundups #98: JimJam Acquired Broadcasting Rights To Mumfie, Brotherhood Brethren Resurfaces On Novela Magic And New Series Queer Of Jozi Launching Soon On MTV Africa

Mumfie Travels The Globe With New Sales

Mumfie is on the move. After debuting earlier this year in France and Italy, Zodiak’s preschool series about a lovable elephant is now branching out from that starting point, thanks to a raft of new sales brokered by distributor Banijay Kids and Family.

The CG-animated series (78 x seven minutes) has been picked up by ITVBe in the UK; Cartoonito (Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, South Korea); AMC Network International’s preschool channel JimJam (CEE, MENA, Portugal); SVT (Sweden); and ejunior (UAE).

Based on the ’90s series Magic Adventures of Mumfie that was created by Britt Allcroft (Thomas & Friends), Mumfie tells the story of a friendly, optimistic elephant and his best friends—a flying pig named Pinkey and a color-changing jellyfish named Jelly Bean—as they find adventure in daily life.

More entertainment coming to Novela Magic

Action drama Brotherhood Brethren was one of the Nigerian series from Africa Magic that hit television screens in 2019. Also on Showmax, the show has been met with lots of enthusiasm from fans online.

Brotherhood Brethren tells the story of two adopted brothers – Dobara aka Bara (Etim Effiong) and Dagogo aka Dags Kurukeme (Frankincense Eche-Ben). Through Bara, we’re introduced to the men and women of the elite crime-fighting squad, Special Crimes Unit (SCU), and the challenges they face in their quest to rid the city of crime, particularly the notorious Aja Isale Eko gang.

Brethren is produced by ace Nigerian filmmaker, Femi Odugbemi, the brain behind several other successful shows such as Battleground and Tinsel, both on Showmax. Odugbemi has always been known for his penchant to mix veterans and talented newcomers in his cast, and Brethren is no different.

The series premieres 28th September on Novela Magic

The queer community getting more love

MTV, an international reality channel owned by Paramount home to various shows like Catfish, Teen Moms and Ridiculousness alongside award shows and live events is set to introduce a queer centred series, Queers Of Jozi.

Larger than life personalities and the faces of fashion, take on the City Of Gold. Relationships intertwined with drama and tantrums in the ever-evolving life of a Queer.

The series premieres on the 24th October on MTV

CBS Justice May Not Be The Only Channel Out For The Count On DStv Even These Two Channels Are Likely To Get Chopped Across Africa

During the past week, I shared my suggestions on CBS Justice as AMC International review their offering across various regions which has led to the reduction or discontinuation of several channels. As seen in these regions, these changes include several other brands namely CBS Reality and JimJam.

CBS Reality is a factual entertainment channel home to various unscripted content like Judge Judy, Cheaters, Animal Hoarding, Hardcore Pawn and Women On The Force and as seen in other regions crime shows like Forensic Files, Killer Siblings and The Real Prime Suspect.

The longest I've watched this channel practically anything with the CBS brand you notice the repetitive nature and I know this is common in most markets but the channel is funneled with too much old programming which is often the reason a channel's lifespan is cut short.

JimJam seems to be lurking in the shadows of these two as the preschool brand has seen themselves get a variety of content which date back to 4-8 years. Some notable series include Thomas And Friends, Guess With Jess, Olivia and Noddy In Toyland.

All of which can be viewed on DreamWorks Channel and CBeebies.

Although there hasn't been much confirmation about CBS Reality's future. There is a lot of signs pointing toward the phasing out of the brand as seen in Poland and the UK in which the current offering tries to limit any mention of CBS.

JimJam's availability has seen declines on various cable providers across the world not that it isn't available in many homes but when various platforms similar to DStv internationally pull the rug from down under then you know something is up.

JimJam Went Off Air In Parts Of Europe, Why Africa Will Be A Likely Target?

JimJam is an international preschool channel wholly owned by AMC International on MultiChoice's DStv and StarTimes' and On Digital Media's StarSat across Africa following the acquisition of Chellozone in 2013 which included MGM (now AMC), CBS Reality and CBS Justice.

The channel once served shows like Thomas And Friends, Bob The Builder, Fireman Sam and Barney And Friends from the former HiT Entertainment (now Mattel Creations) now the current lineup consists of Ricky Zoom, Conni, Noddy In Toyland and Curious George.

By June 2013, JimJam was available in 17 million households in over 60 territories including Romania, Poland and Hungary. By the following year, there had been several termination notices in Asia, Australia and New Zealand with notable ones in MENA and Portugal.

In Africa, the channel had started on Top TV (now StarSat) in 2010 and it took 4 years to be made available on more platforms. At the time, MultiChoice had welcomed 3 general entertainment channels from AMC International and JimJam probably came by chance just like The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of Baby TV.

Just like most channels from AMC International, JimJam had been funneled with old programming some of which have moved or can be seen on various DStv channels like Postman Pat, Make Way For Noddy, Pingu, Olivia, Bob The Builder and Thomas And Friends.

Would it be shocking if the channel went off air as JimJam was managed by the regions it ceased to exist.

Roundups #28: M-Net Working On More Short Form Series As Lingashoni And The Queen Are Axed On 1Magic And Mzansi Magic, SABC Planning To Restructure Their Offering Ahead Of The Launch Of Its Unnamed OTT Service And, The Triplets Alongside New Episodes Of Roary The Racing Car Launches This April On JimJam Africa

M-Net calls it quits for these two series

“The Queen’s producers, Ferguson Films, will shoot Season 7 of the show, which will premiere in July 2022 and viewers will continue to enjoy the telenovela on their screens until its final episode airs on 13 January 2023,”.

“The 1Magic telenovela Lingashoni, produced by Stained Glass TV, will come to an end after its second season concludes on 16 March 2023. This follows the season’s premiere on 21 March 2022.”

A new telenovela will plug the gap on the weekday 9pm slot, replacing The Queen from January 2023. The new content, which is under development, will be announced in due course.

Meanwhile The River, a multi-award winning production, has been renewed for Season 5.

“Our replacement for Lingashoni will be announced in due course. The business has reviewed our approach to focus on stabilising the channel slate with limited high-end series and realities.”

Potential lineup changes coming to the SABC channels

As reported in the past week, the public broadcaster has pushed the launch for its new channels and OTT service to the next financial year which will end by March 2023.

These new channels are said to be made available on the untitled OTT service as predicted and plans are underway to redevelop the offering across all their television channels and radio stations ahead of the launch.

The public broadcaster wants to have a multi-OTT presence and just like Discovery Inc's Discovery+ they're not setting out to surpass Netflix or Showmax but to be sustainable for the years to come.

As mentioned a couple of times, the rumoured SABC Encore could be different to the one formerly seen on DStv and this info kind of proves my suspicions were pretty accurate.
