New Series Alert: Mzansi Magic Presents Ha Molefi, A New Drama About A Father And Son Overcoming Grief And More

This June, Mzansi Magic will premiere Ha Molefi, a drama about a father and son grieving the loss of a Mother and Wife, forcing them to deal directly with the complexities of their relationship.

Thabang Molefi (TJ Mokhuane) is a queer teenager from Pimville, Soweto, who has just lost his mother, Mam’ Linda, and is on a journey of healing and self-discovery. He lives with his father Ntate Molefi (Dingaan Khumalo/DSK) who is also grieving the loss of his wife, and together they set off on a journey of discovery that lays bare their fears and hopes while honoring Mam’Linda’s memory.

Thabang dreams of winning the all-round category at the annual Ballroom/Vogue Nights and he draws inspiration from his late mother, who was a musical sensation in the 90’s, and who always encouraged Thabang to live his truth and follow his dreams.

Ntate Molefi, on the other hand, loves his son and has accepted him as he is. However, the recently widowed father has to learn that he must go beyond just loving his son but also make the effort to open up to him.

“Ha Molefi is an emotional story about a relationship between a grieving father and son, focusing on the raw and honest emotional turmoil that both face, especially concerning the son’s identity,” says Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels.

“As the home of local, Mzansi Magic is proud to bring this inspirational story to our audiences and we hope that it will inspire. We hope viewers will recognise and appreciate how a parent’s love can manifest in fear and how that can either grow or destroy a relationship.”

Will Thabang realise his dream of celebrating his identity through Vogue/Ballroom while navigating this loving but tense relationship with his mourning father?

Watch this inspiring youthful drama when Ha Molefi premieres on Monday 17 June at 20:00, Mzansi Magic DStv channel 161.

Mzansi Magic Presents Code 13, A Race To Capture Dangerous Escaped Convicts Starring Zolisa Xaluva & Lunathi Mampofu

Crime, corruption, and betrayal of the highest level are set to be the driving themes for Mzansi Magic’s new drama series Code 13, premiering on Sunday 14 April.

Set in the gritty heart of Joburg, Code 13 follows the story of Bheki Ndlovu played by Zolisa Xaluva a no-nonsense Jozi detective with a knack for connecting the dots and solving complex cases. Together with a hard-edged police unit, he is tasked with recapturing six of the city's most dangerous criminals who escaped while in custody from a police van.

However, this already challenging case presents him with hurdle after hurdle at every turn as his efforts reveal a web of corruption, betrayal, and secrets at the very top. Moreover, Bheki’s work life is not the only one that seems to be ‘adventure-packed’, but his personal life plays a significant role as he tries to balance the two, especially when his love interest turns out to be a colleague.

The series, produced by Seriti Films also stars Lunathi Mampofu as Bongi Nkosi, a police detective, and Bheki’s love interest, Aluve Mjali as Marcus ‘Mamba’ Moagi as a highly skilled hacker, and Primo Baloyi as Veli ‘Veja’ Mohalanyane who is deeply connected to the community which makes him a reliable informant.   Other cast members who will star in the series include Zikhona Bali as Azania, Saint Seseli as Patrick, and Thami Mngqolo as Dr Pitso.

The big question is: Can Bheki trust his team of over-qualified and egotistical law enforcers to recapture this group of dangerous escapees and expose a web of corruption that reaches the highest levels of power before the city descends into irreversible chaos?

To get all the answers and to see how it all unfolds, tune in to Code 13 premiering Sunday 14 April at 8 pm on Mzansi Magic Channel 161.

It’s A Brand-New Season Of Learning And Unlearning For The Mseleku Siblings As Mzansi Magic Brings The Premiere Of Izingane zeS’thembu S2

‘Sticking together through thick and thin because friends have choices, siblings don’t!’ That is the theme of Izingane zeS’thembu S2 coming to Mzansi Magic on Sunday 5 May for another entertaining yet thought-provoking season.

Mzansi Magic viewers were introduced to the next generation of the Mseleku’s who shared a glimpse of how it is growing up in a setting yesithembu (polygamy). In this second season, the Mseleku eldest children continue their journey of transitioning to young adults and forging stronger bonds.

Last season viewers saw Mpumelelo, the second eldest, trying to walk in his father's footsteps by ‘juggling’ two women – Vuyokazi & Tirelo - whom he said would be part of his isithembu arrangement and both of whom ended the season expectant in more ways than one.

He has been claiming readiness for marriage, for more girlfriends and more wives – but the question is, looking at his current family dynamics – can he see the cracks? This is the season the Mseleku father and son duo will be challenged, and their views put to the test– how honest is Bab’ Mseleku about polygamy and its demands and responsibilities? Is Mpumelelo mimicking his Dad's life without the right resources or is he just ‘delulu’?

Mpilo Mseleku, who is turning 21 years is forced to come out of her shell this season and will be unable to play dumb anymore! Viewers will see more of her at school and how she deals with relationships outside of her siblings. Plus, with her turning 21, there are certain cultural expectations she will be confronted with. Is she ready?

Last season Lwandle gave viewers snippets of who he is and this time, he takes the lead and unveils his true character – he is the star of the show and refuses to be under anyone's shadow! Viewers will get to explore him outside of Mpumelelo as well as his romantic side as he sets out on a journey to finding love.

Abongwe, who is considered ‘The Glue’ of the siblings continues to be adamant that they all need to be closer. This season she reveals a bit more about her sexuality as she has regained a lot of confidence during her time in Johannesburg. She owns who she is and believes it’s time her family tags along.

Not forgetting Mpumelelo’s girlfriends and baby mamas Vuyokazi and Tirelo. That was all drama and problem upon problem for the trio. How will they cope with each other, and the decisions undertaken by Mpumelelo because mans has been talking a different game to what they both expected?

It’s a whole lot of questions that need answers going into Izingane zeS’thembu S2! Will there be resolve that sees these siblings come together and also manage to triumphantly work out their individual challenges? Get all the answers on your home of local from Sunday 5 May at 7 pm on Mzansi Magic DStv Channel 161.

Produced by Rhythm World Productions and Duma Ndlovu, Queen Modjadji will tell the "story of a matriarchal dynasty, whose ability to transform the clouds and summon the rain has earned the Balobedu royalty a place among the most revered of African dynasties," Mzansi Magic says.

Prior to this M-Net will be rolling out a new series White Lies with synopsis below:

Could The River Be Changing Channels On DStv As Champions Debuts On Mzansi Magic?

Mzansi Magic is set to rollout Champions a sports based drama starring Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Tumisho Masha, and Jo-anne Reyneke by early February. It brought various questions from consumers as the show will debut in the timeslot of The River.

As several readers are aware, MultiChoice will be axing both 1Magic and Me prior to Champions debut. For several days, media outlets had been wondering how MultiChoice plans to retain their black premium audience as 1Magic serves as the M-Net's BET channel.

In ongoing conversations with the pay-tv company, it had been mentioned a replacement channel for specifically 1Magic was in development but no word on Me. Leading us to believe that M-Net and MultiChoice could be looking to merge these two channels.

Compact+ has been declining in linear consumption for several years as MultiChoice moves channels like ESPN 2 and Comedy Central to lower tailored bouquets. If anything, it's only a matter of time till MultiChoice opts to discontinue or fold it onto premium.

Although the content for this rumoured channel has yet to be confirmed, we presume M-Net could try to make it a more independent tier from Me as seen with 1Magic at the time. This channel would be the exclusive home to The Real Housewives alongside Beat Shazam and Bel-Air.

If possible from what other outlets presume, they could burn off The River onto this channel making Mzansi Magic the premier destination for local content while brands like Mzansi Wethu serve as the backburner.

Showmax had been producing various content that would often fold under Mzansi Magic. Perhaps, MultiChoice will look at redirecting these shows should a replacement channel be in the works.

Early reception never mentioned a replacement, if anything fans of local dramas on 1Magic would migrate to Mzansi Magic with selected content from Me on Universal TV. But when you look at it doesn't seem far fetched as M-Net also offers content you won't find elsewhere.

Me despite how the channel was perceived is very much necessity to DStv consumers. How else are consumers going to view shows like Summertide or Kitchen Rules SA I mean they could as well transmit on Mzansi Wethu to give the channel purpose to the Compact household.

Could Universal TV And Mzansi Magic Be The Final Outcome Of M-Net Essentials (ME) And 1Magic??? As The River Draws To A Close And Showmax 2.0. Rolls Out

During the day, it was reported that MultiChoice will be removing 1Magic and M-Net Essentials (Me) both of which were supplied by M-Net in the coming weeks. DStv customers have already recieved inboxes confirming the termination of these channels.
M-Net's Me and 1Magic will be exiting DStv from February 2nd and MultiChoice doesn't appear to be looking to commission another channel in place. This is through an ongoing enquiry where a representative only confirms the channel but no substitution.

When VUZU and M-Net City merged to form Me, MultiChoice highlighted that in their response to several DStv consumers in 2021 and fast forward to the new year the pay-tv company is hush hush. It wouldn't seem far fetched if none of these channels were replaced.

Where does that leave further shows from 1Magic?

When 1Magic launched in 2018, M-Net was basically ripping several local shows away from Mzansi Magic and making them available exclusively on the channel. They even had a line-up of international shows like The $100,000 Pyramid and Gossip Girl whose future will be on M-Net's linear offering and Showmax.

Funny thing about this was The River was also scheduled to close around the same date as 1Magic, February 2nd. As several fans predicted, 1Magic built it's whole existence around 1 show and couldn't survive in the long run.

Where does that leave further shows from Me?

Me was a mashup of the former M-Net City and VUZU which was basically M-Net Series. A catch-up channel tailored for lower bouquets like Compact and Family and with its termination consumers need to wonder if the whole acquisition and revamping of Showmax had a part in the cancellation.

Despite Me getting poor reception from several DStv consumers, would it seem far fetched if MultiChoice probably wanted to prioritise Universal TV as it had garnered popularity following the demise of M-Net City and both channels reside within the same packages.

Universal TV is operated by NBCUniversal that manage channels like Studio Universal, DreamWorks and Telemundo. They even have a 30% stake on the soon-to-be-revamped Showmax streaming service.

Could Channel O, Mzansi Music And kykNET NOU Also Exit The DStv Platform?

During the day, it was reported that MultiChoice will be removing 1Magic and M-Net Essentials (Me) both of which were supplied by M-Net in the coming weeks. DStv customers have already recieved inboxes confirming the termination of these channels.

With the decline in linear consumption on the top tier bouquets, this was very much anticipated from various DStv customers. Now, MultiChoice will have to work around the clock to find suitable candidates to fill the gap of both 1Magic and M-Net's Me channel.

With the cancellation of 1Magic and M-Net Essentials, it does lead some viewers (including myself) to wonder what future awaits M-Net's music offering and this includes kykNET NOU, Channel O and Mzansi Music.

Channel O was shuttered across Africa (excluding South Africa) as they were struggling to compete with the likes of MTV Base and Trace Urban. As we embrace the new year, Channel O hasn't been updating its content as much in recent years and the international offering was axed.

kykNET NOU and Mzansi Music are probably in a way better position than Channel O in terms of programming. But Mzansi Magic is basically the VH1 of music something which MultiChoice has been trying to limit while kykNET NOU serves as niche tier.

Unlike Channel O, kykNET NOU could merge with the existing kykNET channels to help give the content more exposure. As for the latter, we feel that M-Net could exit the music space similar to how they exited the kids space as brands like Nickelodeon and Disney Channel edged them out.

Produced by the renowned Rhythm World team, My Brother’s Keeper promises a compelling story of family politics, ambition, exploring how far individuals will reach in their quest for power and acceptance, and the corrupting nature of greed.

Against the opulent backdrop of the Shabalala family empire, at the heart of this drama stands Nqubeko, Mshengu's ambitious love child, trapped in the shadows and yearning for his rightful place in the family.

Nqubeko, driven by both ambition and the need for validation, sees an opportunity to become more powerful, setting his sights on his sister-in-law Fakazile, the key to the Shabalala legacy. But as he navigates this dangerous path, he finds himself at odds with his siblings, especially Donga, the rightful heir. As alliances shift and secrets come to light, the Shabalala family finds itself on the verge of collapse, with each member forced to reckon with their desires, loyalties, and the true cost of power.

Meet the Shabalala Family:

·         Mshengu (Lindani Nkosi): A dominant figure, Mshengu establishes authority with a mix of savvy and confidence. His traditionalist values often clash with the changing world around him.

·         Khwezi (Mnqobi Kunene): Mshengu's firstborn with MaMchunu. An astute businessman. Khwezi's unexpected absence sets in motion the drama to unfold.

·         Fakazile (Zola Nombona): An independent woman and wife of Khwezi. As the key to the Shabalala empire, she becomes the focal point of the power struggle.

·         Nqubeko (Wiseman Mncube): The ambitious love child, constantly seeking his father's approval. His decisions stir the pot within the Shabalala family.

·         Donga (Sdumo Mtshali): Mshengu's firstborn with his first wife, representing the rightful heir to the Shabalala legacy.

Other notable characters include Nomusa (Vuyiseka Cawe), the supportive wife of Nqubeko; Thuthuka (Sparky Xulu), the charming yet irresponsible youngest Shabalala; and Ndumiso (Nkanyiso Mchunu), a man easily swayed by temptation.

New Series Alert: Dlozi Love Connections With Thokoza Munt’wam Coming This October To Mzansi Magic

Have you ever wondered how ancestral callings and matters of the heart coexist? Well, Mzansi Magic is about to answer that for you in the most entertaining and dramatic way possible.

Stay glued to your screens, because come Wednesday 11 October at 8pm, we're serving you 13 episodes of Thokoza Munt’wam, a reality dating show that we are certain will be your new obsession.

Thokoza Munt’wam is not your usual reality show. We've got three couples here, each unique in their dynamics, challenges, and love languages. These couples are on the ultimate quest: to balance the spiritual and physical worlds. They are driven by love, but their unique spiritual journeys shape their relationships in ways most of us might never understand. The burning question is: can their love survive their ancestral callings?

Meet Our Couples:

1. Zukiswa Vutela and Macdonald Mailula known as Ndlovulati & Mcool Chuene: Think age is just a number? These two will give you a whole new perspective. From dealing with age differences and societal pressures to confronting personal and collective pasts – their story is nothing short of extraordinary.

2. Khanyisile Mnguni and Zanele Mnguni also known as Slay & Zee: Two women, both from Christian backgrounds, battling issues of identity, spirituality, and legacy. What does it mean to stand by your partner when their beliefs are in complete contrast to yours? Tune in to find out!

3. Kamogelo Sello and Sinoyolo Mbotshwa also known as Mercedes & Yolo: Ever been inboxed by your soulmate? Gogo Mercedes saw Yolo in a dream and reached out via Facebook. Their young love is loaded with unique challenges, but they're determined to navigate it all.

Why should you watch?
Because Thokoza Munt’wam is rewriting the narrative. While many shows might focus on the practice of ancestral calling, this one puts love centre stage. It’s the sweet, sometimes sour, love stories of the couples, with the twist of ancestral influences that make this a must-watch.

Here's what our couples have to say about their journey:

Slay and Zee: "I joined the show to break the binary thinking society has about spirituality. Especially in this generation," says Slay. While Zee cheekily adds, "I joined to support Slay in her rise to fame."

Ndlovulati & Mcool: "We joined to express ourselves as genuine healers. To show the true definition of healing and love."

Masedi & Yolo: "We chose to be a part of the show to grow and learn from challenges we face as a young influential couple. In this season, we show support over any other thing."

Don’t miss, Thokoza Munt’wam starting Wednesday 11 October, 8pm, only on DStv channel 161. And if you’re always on-the-go, catch it on DStv Stream and Catch Up.

Recap To The Week: The Real Housewives Is Becoming A Cinematic Universe On DStv

The Real Housewives Of Johannesburg, The Real Housewives Of Cape Town, The Real Housewives Of Durban and these are just some of the few reiteration to the popular Bravo franchise seen across various M-Net channels through the DStv platform.

During the week, MultiChoice and NBCUniversal unveiled another Housewives instalment for the kykNET channel titled Die Real Housewives Van Die Winelands which will basically follow the hustle of various women in a certain geographical area.

It will follow the champagne catfights and soirée-filled social circles of a new group of Afrikaans-speaking women, all living and gossiping in South Africa's famed Cape winelands region around Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, known for its "old money" and its centuries-old, multi-million rand family-owned wine estates.

According to kykNET, the Cape winelands offer "wealth, vineyards and wine" but it is also here where the tongues are wagging in the high-society social circles over the latest and never-ending gossip in the region over the ins and outs of this conspicuously wealthy community.

But that's not what's got me hooked personally I don't watch it not that it's bad or anything but everyone has their own preference which is the case here as MultiChoice has been dishing out more and more housewives adaptions across their platforms.

It had sort of got me thinking, could it be that M-Net may rollout a standalone channel featuring these local variations alongside the international components which have been gracing our screens for several decades I mean the idea wouldn't seem far fetched at this point.

WWE has got a dedicated channel why not The Real Housewives I mean M-Net has got too much of this content on their plate already that I doubt a lot of consumers particularly those into such content will be able to keep up to all these variations.

Just like WWE, my hunch for this channel would be that content that was probably not accessible on DStv would be found here while the fresh local offering will serve as rebroadcasts or simultaneous premieres I can see only of those options working.

On top of these instalments across DStv, we would also be getting doccies or behind the scene type programming. I mean after seeing brands like SuperSport Schools build their offering from various SuperSport channels the idea doesn't seem far fetched.

Curious as to how long it will be till MultiChoice announce the launch of The Real Housewives Channel. I mean hey they've found new ways of distributing repeats and making them knowledgeable to more consumers this case wouldn't be any different.

Roundups #139: Hello Sunshine Another Division From Moonbug Kids' Candle Media Closes Down, Idols SA Cancelled After 19 Seasons On M-Net And Mzansi Magic, And Paramount+ Set To Merge With Showtime Network

Another division ceases to exist

Hello Sunshine is shuttering its kids and animation business as part of a strategic decision to focus Candle Media’s kids and animation efforts under Moonbug, the family production studio the corp snapped up for a near $3 billion in November 2021.

Hello Sunshine will collaborate with Moonbug on future kids and animation projects.

As a result, a few individuals will be departing Hello Sunshine over the coming weeks.

The Blackstone-backed Candle Media, which is also co-run and co-founded by Tom Staggs, acquired Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine in August 2021 for $900M.

Another show bites the dust

M-Net has cancelled the long-running Idols with the upcoming 19th season on its Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) channel which will be the last for the [SIC] Entertainment-produced reality singing competition show following viewership fatigue and a massive plunge in ratings.

The cancellation of the South African version of the Fremantle format follows after a dramatic ratings plunge for Idols in season 17 that coincided with a relationship scandal involving Idols judge Somizi Mhlongo after his ex Mohale Motaung made serious allegations of emotional and physical abuse.

While Idols started off its 17th season in South Africa in July 2021 with 1 018 607 viewers as the 4th most-watched show on all of DStv for the month, it suddenly plunged to 10th place on DStv's most-watched list with 693 760 viewers at most in August 2021, shedding 32% of its viewers.

After the very large drop in viewers and in an effort to revitalise Idols, M-Net's general entertainment channels division and [SIC] Entertainment decided to retain Somizi Mhlongo for 2022's18th season and axed judges Randall Abrahams and Unathi Nkayi whose contracts were not renewed and were replaced with artists Thembi Seete and rapper-producer JR Bogopa.

Another merger is on the horizon

Paramount’s merging its Paramount Plus streaming service and premium Showtime channel, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. In an internal memo, CEO Bob Bakish announced the company’s rebranding its Showtime channel as Paramount Plus with Showtime.

Paramount confirmed the change in a post on Twitter, noting that the merger is “the natural next step in our evolution.” The company’s also planning to carry over “select” original content from Paramount Plus to the TV network, which could include shows like Halo and Yellowstone spinoff 1923.

Bakish says the move “brings uncertainty for the teams working on these brands and businesses” and that he’ll share more details in “the coming weeks.”

In addition to the possibility of layoffs, Deadline reports that some shows like Three Women (which was never aired), Let the Right One In, and American Gigolo could get axed as part of the consolidation. The specifics of what will happen to existing episodes of each series are unclear, but the report says that titles pulled from Showtime will be made available to take elsewhere.

Why SWITCH'D On Channel 110 Doesn't Offer Rebroadcasts To kykNET's Primetime Series?

Last month, eMedia Investments had MultiChoice unveiled a batch of pop-up channels which serve as a linear catch-up service to some of their primetime offering while eMedia only runs 1 channel Power Up with MultiChoice SWITCH'D ON comes as two components.

The first SWITCH'D is accessible to DStv Premium, Compact+ and Compact consumers on channel 109 incorporates the best of Mzansi Magic and kykNET & Kie which consists of Gomora, In Die Ysterhand Se Greep, Arendsvlei, Kind Van Die Noodlot, The River and so forth.

The second SWITCH'D is accessible to lower mass consumers particularly Family and Access package on channel 110. The channel incorporates the best of Mzansi Wethu and Mzansi Bioskop with content like The Queen, The River, Lingashoni and Isibaya.

Since launch, the channels were met with mixed reviews particularly for the second SWITCH'D channel as the pay-tv holder opted to only bundle Mzansi Magic's sister channels and exclude kykNET from the offering while as the first incorporates both brands.

What to expect this February on TNT?
Big Cat Sunday this February on National Geographic Wild
CBS Reality acquired rights to Killer's Caught On Camera

Why kykNET is not available on channel 110?

The answer is simple MultiChoice offers two versions of kykNET one which is kykNET & Kie is accessible on the Family bouquet alongside Compact, Compact+ and Premium while the other kykNET Lekker can only be viewed on Access.

Taking that to account, both brands are at different stages with various shows take for instance Kind Van Die Noodlot which is halfway through its second season on kykNET & Kie while as the first season recently launched on kykNET Lekker.

Same goes for most of the offering including Arendsvlei, Binnelanders, Getroud Met Rugby, Suidooster and several others.

Why channel 109 is not accessible on the Family bouquet?

Kind of related to the whole reason channel 110 doesn't supply kykNET, Mzansi Magic. The channel offers the latest seasons to various local productions to which the Family bouquet can only view in the coming future so MultiChoice doesn't want to go off spoiling anything.

Thoughts:

Do viewers really need to schedule what's on the screen especially with the power outages I mean wouldn't it make more sense to launch an On Demand service in the menu bar in order to watch these shows at anytime.

Now a week's worth of episodes will be going down the drain because of Eskom and the fact that the population is too busy in their personal lives to keep tabs on daytime repeats.
