Get Ready For Matshai Sisters, Mzansi Magic’s Bold New Reality Show Coming In November

Mzansi Magic is about to shake up your reality TV experience with Matshai Sisters, a trailblazing new show that dives deep into the lives of five unforgettable sisters.

“While Mzansi Magic has explored many family themes, Matshai Sisters is a game-changer with its focus on an all-female household,” says Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels. “This show offers a unique perspective on how women navigate family dynamics without male figures and is sure to strike a chord with our viewers.”

This groundbreaking reality show takes you inside a whirlwind of family drama, fierce battles, and a chilling curse that threatens to tear them apart. These bold sisters are anything but shy! Their candidness and clashes promise to deliver a viewing experience that’s as riveting as it is relatable.

Meet the Matshai Family:

Thoko (43): The fiery eldest who’s convinced their family is cursed and is on a mission to heal their fractured bonds.
Phumzile (41): She feels like she sacrificed for the family and raised herself. It’s her time now!
Twins Zanele & Zandile (35): The spirited duo whose close-knit bond creates both unity and chaos.
Busi (25): The youngest sister, whose arrival has only fueled the family’s explosive conflicts.

And at the center of it all is their mother, Ntombi Matshai (68), forever caught in the storm of her daughters' relentless disputes.

The series kicks off with Thoko’s firm belief that their constant bickering stems from a family curse. Determined to find resolution, she calls a long-overdue family meeting, hoping to bring them together for the first time in years. Deep-seated resentment towards their late father also lingers, as they believe his failure to honor traditional customs, like ‘ukuhlawula’ for four of the five daughters, may be contributing to the misfortunes that plague their lives.

Will the Matshai sisters manage to break the curse and rebuild their bonds? Tune in to Matshai Sisters and follow their journey towards healing and self-discovery, premiering in November.

News Shorts: Moonbug Short PeaKeeBoo Gets Full Series Order At CAKE, Rebroadcast Of Zee World's I Do And My Heart Knows Release Dates, And Mzansi Magic Debuts Outlaws And Ekhaya

PeaKeeBoo breathe new life

London-based distributor CAKE has inked a deal with Toikido to develop an animated PeaKeeBoo series (TBD x five minutes). This new format will build on a package of 30 x one-minute shorts that Moonbug Entertainment is launching on its Moonbug Kids YouTube channel later this year.

CAKE is in the early stages of development on its five-minute series treatment and hasn’t locked down an animation style yet. But it will resemble Moonbug’s CG/2D-animated shorts, although Moonbug is not involved in the long-form series.

PeaKeeBoo centers around three friends (Pea, Kee and Boo) who love to play hide-and-seek and take in all the sounds and sights of nature. CAKE and Toikido have already tapped singer-songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor (“Take Me Home”) to narrate the series.

Zee World hits the snooze button

I Do follows a fun-loving girl named brought up in the USA enters Bhopal in search of her real father and stays with her foster sister's aunt who has a a son. They gradually fall in love, but his childhood friend Tanveer Baig creates obstacles for them.

My Heart Knows brings out the story about a young girl who loses her mother at a young age. It all started when her mother slipped on their balcony, and her then 18-year old father could not save her mother. Her father Atul is then arrested and grants custody to his ex-wife, Anupriya.

The rebroadcast of I Do launches 29 July replacing Zara's Nikah for the rest of Africa (excluding South Africa) while My Heart Knows replaces Second Chances in Southern Africa from 30 July.

Mzansi Magic adds two shows

Catch Ekhaya Backpackers, a comedy about the quirky Mthembu family turning their Soweto home into a guest house for backpackers to pay off their debt, stars Kwenzo Ngcobo, Abdul Khoza, Felix Hlophe, and Eve Rasimeni.

Meanwhile, Outlaws, is a drama series set along the Lesotho-KwaZulu-Natal border, featuring the feuding Biyela and Tseole families, starring Thembinkosi Mthembu, Lehlohonolo Mayeza, and Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku.

Canal+ Original Series. Shaka Ilembe Now Airing On Canal+ Première In Other African Countries

New CANAL+Original series, Shaka Ilembe is the greatest epic series ever made around Shaka Zulu, the mythical and powerful Zulu king of the 18th century. From his childhood to his rise to his fall, Shaka Ilembe retraces in 12 52-minute episodes a great African destiny to be discovered from July 1 on CANAL +Première.

War, revenge and...love story

With the series Shaka Ilembe CANAL+ Original takes on one of the most emblematic figures in African history: King Shaka who succeeded in building an empire by uniting more than 100 chiefdoms into one kingdom Zulu. All the same, you should not expect exclusively a series of clan wars ending in bloodshed.

On the contrary, from the first episode we are caught up in the budding love story between Princess Nandi, daughter of Mbengi, and Senzanghakona, son of King Jama of the Zulus, Shaka's parents. Thanks to the brilliant interpretation of the actors, the natural settings magnified by the direction of photography and the richness of the costumes, we are catapulted to the 18th century, in South Africa, and we want to stay there.

A meeting with History

The series required 6 years of work and a large behind-the-scenes team of historians, intellectuals, traditional leaders, guardians of oral history, royal advisors and the very descendants of Shaka's family to that the work is as close aspossible to historical reality. The result is astonishingly true and the reconstructions of the villages, rituals and dances are very successful. The Zulu dialogues are subtitled in the original version.

Shaka Ilembe, exclusively on CANAL+ Première, every Monday from July 1 at 8:30 p.m., two new episodes per evening.

For those wondering why it is regarded as Canal+ instead of M-Net it has nothing to do with the pending acquisition of MultiChoice. But rather Canal+ acquired French rights to the show hence "Canal+ Original Series" again nothing shocking about this.

eMedia Investments sources most of eExtra's Kuiertyd content from Turkey with production house Verklank credited for the dubs. Then there's Netflix licensing agreements with Nickelodeon, DreamWorks and Telemundo hence "Netflix Original/Exclusive".

Celebrating Fatherhood: A Glimpse into the Lives of Ayanda Makayi, Vuyo Biyela, Duma Ndlovu, and Junior Khanye

Fatherhood is a unique journey, especially when balancing the demands of a thriving career. For Ayanda Makayi, Vuyo Biyela, Duma Ndlovu, and Junior Khanye, this balance is a daily act of love and dedication. As we celebrate Father's Day, these prominent figures from the South African entertainment industry share their experiences and insights on being present and engaged fathers despite their hectic schedules.

Ayanda Makayi known for his role as Stokie on the Mzansi Magic telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire, understands the challenges of balancing his career with fatherhood especially in a co-parenting dynamic but tries to continuously connect with his son. He says “balancing your career with responsibilities is never easy especially being far from your child. He is in Johannesburg and I’m here in Gqeberha but it’s important to always remember purpose and why I am here which is for him and being a father who can provide for him. Support system is also very important and his mother and “Mam’P” (his nanny) are amazing and he is just so loved which makes it all work and all worth it.” He adds that because of the distance, he relies on videos calls to connect with his son but outside of the usual video calls he enjoys traditions with his son which include “our ice cream dates at McDonald’s , kicking the ball together, Lwandle loves swimming so I try make sure I can take him to go to his lessons whenever I can, pick him up from school, we love singing together… even in his baby language.”

Vuyo Biyela, who portrays Kwenzo Dlamini on Mzansi Wethu's popular telenovela Sibongile & the Dlaminis, firmly believes that fatherhood comes first and balancing his acting career with parenting is a non-negotiable and he admits that a supportive family structure aids in this balance. “I’m a father before I’m an actor so balance is not a question. I always make time for my kids regardless of my busy schedule. I have a very supportive family structure so that also makes things easier." He adds, “when I’m not on call we love playing educational board games and since my son is a football fanatic, my daughter and I are always at his training sessions and football matches supporting him and lastly my daughter always gives us live performances of singing and dance every night before bedtime that’s where everyone shares a good laugh.”

Renowned poet, playwright, and producer, Duma Ndlovu who is currently working on drama series Queen Modjajdi coming to Mzansi Magic, on Sunday 14 July at 20:00. acknowledges the challenges of balancing a demanding career with fatherhood saying “balancing my demanding career with fatherhood has been a challenge, but I have always made it a priority to set aside dedicated time for my children. Whether it's mealtimes, sharing ideas and things to do, or weekend activities, I try to be fully present and engaged when I'm with them. Most especially on big calendar days. We always gather and share meals and laughter.” He adds that when he is not working he makes it a point to engage in activities that his family and more especially his children enjoy, “we have established some traditions such as telling stories, weekend road trips to the villages, and family nights which we all look forward to. These moments are precious to me, and I cherish the bond we share during these times.”

Soccer legend and analyst, Junior Khanye whose 14-part reality show Fixing the Game: Junior Khanye will premiere on Mzansi Wethu on Thursday 11 July at 18:30, values every moment spent with his kids, even amidst a hectic schedule. Despite his kids not living with him, he emphasises that he always finds time to spend with them, “it can be two hours or one hour and even though they don’t stay with me, I don’t mind travelling and seeing them because my kids come first. I know work comes first because if I don’t work, I can’t provide for my kids but in my life, my kids come first, and I try my best to always give time to seeing my kids in between my busy schedule.” He emphasizes that it is important that he shows up for his family and encourages all fathers to do the same.

As these fathers share their stories, it is evident that fatherhood is a commitment that transcends distance, time, and professional demands. This Father's Day, we celebrate the dedication and the loving bonds Fathers nurture with their children. Let the experiences of these enetertainment fathers remind us of the significance of being present and making every moment count.

Mzansi Magic Presents Code 13, A Race To Capture Dangerous Escaped Convicts Starring Zolisa Xaluva & Lunathi Mampofu

Crime, corruption, and betrayal of the highest level are set to be the driving themes for Mzansi Magic’s new drama series Code 13, premiering on Sunday 14 April.

Set in the gritty heart of Joburg, Code 13 follows the story of Bheki Ndlovu played by Zolisa Xaluva a no-nonsense Jozi detective with a knack for connecting the dots and solving complex cases. Together with a hard-edged police unit, he is tasked with recapturing six of the city's most dangerous criminals who escaped while in custody from a police van.

However, this already challenging case presents him with hurdle after hurdle at every turn as his efforts reveal a web of corruption, betrayal, and secrets at the very top. Moreover, Bheki’s work life is not the only one that seems to be ‘adventure-packed’, but his personal life plays a significant role as he tries to balance the two, especially when his love interest turns out to be a colleague.

The series, produced by Seriti Films also stars Lunathi Mampofu as Bongi Nkosi, a police detective, and Bheki’s love interest, Aluve Mjali as Marcus ‘Mamba’ Moagi as a highly skilled hacker, and Primo Baloyi as Veli ‘Veja’ Mohalanyane who is deeply connected to the community which makes him a reliable informant.   Other cast members who will star in the series include Zikhona Bali as Azania, Saint Seseli as Patrick, and Thami Mngqolo as Dr Pitso.

The big question is: Can Bheki trust his team of over-qualified and egotistical law enforcers to recapture this group of dangerous escapees and expose a web of corruption that reaches the highest levels of power before the city descends into irreversible chaos?

To get all the answers and to see how it all unfolds, tune in to Code 13 premiering Sunday 14 April at 8 pm on Mzansi Magic Channel 161.

‘Sticking together through thick and thin because friends have choices, siblings don’t!’ That is the theme of Izingane zeS’thembu S2 coming to Mzansi Magic on Sunday 5 May for another entertaining yet thought-provoking season.

Mzansi Magic viewers were introduced to the next generation of the Mseleku’s who shared a glimpse of how it is growing up in a setting yesithembu (polygamy). In this second season, the Mseleku eldest children continue their journey of transitioning to young adults and forging stronger bonds.

Last season viewers saw Mpumelelo, the second eldest, trying to walk in his father's footsteps by ‘juggling’ two women – Vuyokazi & Tirelo - whom he said would be part of his isithembu arrangement and both of whom ended the season expectant in more ways than one.

He has been claiming readiness for marriage, for more girlfriends and more wives – but the question is, looking at his current family dynamics – can he see the cracks? This is the season the Mseleku father and son duo will be challenged, and their views put to the test– how honest is Bab’ Mseleku about polygamy and its demands and responsibilities? Is Mpumelelo mimicking his Dad's life without the right resources or is he just ‘delulu’?

Mpilo Mseleku, who is turning 21 years is forced to come out of her shell this season and will be unable to play dumb anymore! Viewers will see more of her at school and how she deals with relationships outside of her siblings. Plus, with her turning 21, there are certain cultural expectations she will be confronted with. Is she ready?

Last season Lwandle gave viewers snippets of who he is and this time, he takes the lead and unveils his true character – he is the star of the show and refuses to be under anyone's shadow! Viewers will get to explore him outside of Mpumelelo as well as his romantic side as he sets out on a journey to finding love.

Abongwe, who is considered ‘The Glue’ of the siblings continues to be adamant that they all need to be closer. This season she reveals a bit more about her sexuality as she has regained a lot of confidence during her time in Johannesburg. She owns who she is and believes it’s time her family tags along.

Not forgetting Mpumelelo’s girlfriends and baby mamas Vuyokazi and Tirelo. That was all drama and problem upon problem for the trio. How will they cope with each other, and the decisions undertaken by Mpumelelo because mans has been talking a different game to what they both expected?

It’s a whole lot of questions that need answers going into Izingane zeS’thembu S2! Will there be resolve that sees these siblings come together and also manage to triumphantly work out their individual challenges? Could The River Be Changing Channels On DStv As Champions Debuts On Mzansi Magic?

Mzansi Magic is set to rollout Champions a sports based drama starring Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Tumisho Masha, and Jo-anne Reyneke by early February. It brought various questions from consumers as the show will debut in the timeslot of The River.

As several readers are aware, MultiChoice will be axing both 1Magic and Me prior to Champions debut. For several days, media outlets had been wondering how MultiChoice plans to retain their black premium audience as 1Magic serves as the M-Net's BET channel.

In ongoing conversations with the pay-tv company, it had been mentioned a replacement channel for specifically 1Magic was in development but no word on Me. Leading us to believe that M-Net and MultiChoice could be looking to merge these two channels.

Compact+ has been declining in linear consumption for several years as MultiChoice moves channels like ESPN 2 and Comedy Central to lower tailored bouquets. If anything, it's only a matter of time till MultiChoice opts to discontinue or fold it onto premium.

Although the content for this rumoured channel has yet to be confirmed, we presume M-Net could try to make it a more independent tier from Me as seen with 1Magic at the time. This channel would be the exclusive home to The Real Housewives alongside Beat Shazam and Bel-Air.

If possible from what other outlets presume, they could burn off The River onto this channel making Mzansi Magic the premier destination for local content while brands like Mzansi Wethu serve as the backburner.

Showmax had been producing various content that would often fold under Mzansi Magic. Perhaps, MultiChoice will look at redirecting these shows should a replacement channel be in the works.

Early reception never mentioned a replacement, if anything fans of local dramas on 1Magic would migrate to Mzansi Magic with selected content from Me on Universal TV. But when you look at it doesn't seem far fetched as M-Net also offers content you won't find elsewhere.

Me despite how the channel was perceived is very much necessity to DStv consumers. How else are consumers going to view shows like Summertide or Kitchen Rules SA I mean they could as well transmit on Mzansi Wethu to give the channel purpose to the Compact household.

Could Universal TV And Mzansi Magic Be The Final Outcome Of M-Net Essentials (ME) And 1Magic??? As The River Draws To A Close And Showmax 2.0. Rolls Out

During the day, it was reported that MultiChoice will be removing 1Magic and M-Net Essentials (Me) both of which were supplied by M-Net in the coming weeks. DStv customers have already recieved inboxes confirming the termination of these channels.
M-Net's Me and 1Magic will be exiting DStv from February 2nd and MultiChoice doesn't appear to be looking to commission another channel in place. This is through an ongoing enquiry where a representative only confirms the channel but no substitution.

When VUZU and M-Net City merged to form Me, MultiChoice highlighted that in their response to several DStv consumers in 2021 and fast forward to the new year the pay-tv company is hush hush. It wouldn't seem far fetched if none of these channels were replaced.

Where does that leave further shows from 1Magic?

When 1Magic launched in 2018, M-Net was basically ripping several local shows away from Mzansi Magic and making them available exclusively on the channel. They even had a line-up of international shows like The $100,000 Pyramid and Gossip Girl whose future will be on M-Net's linear offering and Showmax.

Funny thing about this was The River was also scheduled to close around the same date as 1Magic, February 2nd. As several fans predicted, 1Magic built it's whole existence around 1 show and couldn't survive in the long run.

Where does that leave further shows from Me?

Me was a mashup of the former M-Net City and VUZU which was basically M-Net Series. A catch-up channel tailored for lower bouquets like Compact and Family and with its termination consumers need to wonder if the whole acquisition and revamping of Showmax had a part in the cancellation.

Despite Me getting poor reception from several DStv consumers, would it seem far fetched if MultiChoice probably wanted to prioritise Universal TV as it had garnered popularity following the demise of M-Net City and both channels reside within the same packages.

Universal TV is operated by NBCUniversal that manage channels like Studio Universal, DreamWorks and Telemundo. They even have a 30% stake on the soon-to-be-revamped Showmax streaming service.
