Should e.tv News And Sport Merge With eReality In An Attempt To Save Impact Wrestling And The Remaining Content From The Channel?

During the course of 2021, News And Sport owned by eMedia Investments had lost several sporting rights as the latter have since then moved to SABC Sport which led to speculation that the owners are ready to retire their only branded channel for news and sports.

eMedia Investments parted ways with sports back in 2017 when they cancelled their agreement with their only sports program WWE as it was deemed expensive so the focus dwelled on general entertainment as they relied on other brands such as Fight Sports and Kwése Free Sports to fill that gap.

During that time, it was viewers experienced memorial moments with these brands and it was also chaos when both struggled to remain sustainable that led to the creation to the creation of News And Sport and also the introduction of NBA onto e.tv.

News And Sport has struggled to keep viewers at the edge of the seat as there was a high demand for a dedicated sports channel that not even the existing sports offering on Openview would sit well with viewers.

SABC Sport launched last year and since then became the top 10 channels on Openview and likely the most watched sports channel on the platform.

Openview spends more time promoting the channel than they do with their own brand News And Sport so the idea of eMedia Investments calling it quits doesn't seem far fetched for the near future.

At the time, WWE left eMedia's portfolio there has no sports present in their lineup but this time it could be different as their streaming service eVOD added Impact Wrestling to their platform with the rest of Impact's library nowhere in site or at least for now.

By that logic, eMedia Investments could continue investing in sports but ones that don't compete with SABC or SuperSport. The idea would be for them to add sports that align to general entertainment and Impact Wrestling fits that description.

The news slate has hit a dry spell with old doccies and reality shows considered news even repeats from e.tv and eNCA so the logical thing would be having eReality absorb that portion and who knows it could extend their curfew or remove the closing time.

Now eMedia Investments plans to close the channel down by the end of March and axe 45 workers. Merging it with eReality could perhaps increase the value of the channel and possibly give it 24 hour capability.
