Development Alert: Novela Magic's Frequencies Being Used On An Upcoming DStv Channel
Friday, May 12, 2023
Recap To Last Year: Africa Magic Epic Replaced Novela Magic On DStv Compact
Africa Magic Epic (DStv 152) is a West African movie channel operated by M-Net which broadcast films from Nigeria and Ghana and since last year supply a 1 hour segment to the first season of Ajoche and Riona currently on Africa Magic Showcase (DStv 150).
Novela Magic was Africa's first attempt at a dedicated channel for local telenovelas or in this case a rip-off to the likes of Mzansi Wethu, kykNET Lekker and OneZed featuring a lot of rehashed programming such as Zuba, Suidooster, Isibaya and Battleground.
As of May 2023, the channel no longer exists and from last year this was only applicable to South Africa and likely Lesotho with the last fragments of the brand confined to Magic Showcase (DStv 143).
Of course, Riona and Ajoche formed part of Novela Magic's offering before being swapped away alongside the rest of the channel. It's kind of weird that M-Net would make this available on a brand more accustomed to movies as opposed to Africa Magic Family.
Maybe this is their way of making up for the loss of Novela Magic considering the timing of these series entry to the channel and another could be that M-Net similar to 1Magic and Mzansi Magic is looking to create division amongst their consumers.

NOT SHOCKING!!! Novela Magic Stops Airing Across Africa From 18 April On DStv And GOtv
Novela Magic was a Pan-African telenovela channel operated by M-Net similar to Mzansi Wethu and kykNET Lekker would supply content already viewed on DStv. But unlike the latter, the channel was used to make some of this content accessible to more countries.
Since November 2022, MultiChoice grew quite distanced from Novela Magic so much so that they launched two replacement channels, Magic Showcase and CineMagic and at the same time opted to make these channels accessible to only Easyview customers.
The reason for that has to do with repeats for which the pay-tv company had been trying to hide/limit from certain DStv customers with the rollout of BBC UKTV, Moja 9.9., Pearl Magic POA and the already mentioned Magic Showcase and CineMagic.
It only seemed logical for Novela Magic to go dark in South Africa before anywhere else as most of the content had already been viewed in the region compared to the rest of Africa where Suidooster, Isibaya and The Throne haven't been viewed by a lot of consumers.
After 6 months, more regions confirmed the demise of Novela Magic with the channel set to go dark from April 18 likely for similar reasons as seen in South Africa - repeats. On which the pay-tv platform as mentioned had been limiting accessibility.
Novela Magic seemed promising it didn't look like something that MultiChoice was quickly going to forget about after 3 years. But the problem with the channel had to do with positioning as it was made to look like the Mzansi Wethu of Mzansi Magic.
Novela Magic could have been more nostalgic explore shows that have been abandoned or long forgotten by Mzansi Magic, M-Net and kykNET if the idea was never to rollout fresh content but instead they'd rather use the brand as some type of catch-up channel.
As of the moment, the channel is currently on autopilot and being marketed as the Suidooster and Brotherhood Brethren channel.

Why Novela Magic Is Being Snatched From DStv Customers In South Africa?
Novela Magic was Africa's first attempt at a storytelling channel geared for viewers in Africa and I know the channel won't be killed off entirely but it is going off air in South Africa so I have every right to refer it to it in the past tense.
As it is the channel has a few days left and there's been nothing but absolute silence probably because MultiChoice didn't bother put up a termination notice so viewers will be stunned when they find channel 165 is blocked thinking account payment or technical issues when in fact it was snatched.
An early overview of the channel revealed it would source their content from Mzansi Magic, kykNET, Africa Magic and further local channels from M-Net. From what was understood about the channel it took its content mainly from the latter three.
While as brands like Maisha Magic, Pearl Magic, Abol TV and Zambezi Magic are still trying to build their offering for Novela Magic so it could explain why it is being snatched from DStv customers and Paramount's channels were used to compensate the affected viewers.
While as Easyview has Magic Showcase and other customers higher than Family have the latter three channels Access customers are just short with 1 channel being Africa Magic.
It's amazing how consumers on this package are up-to-date with Nigeria's Big Brother and Idols while SA's adaptations come with a bigger price tag. Now history is repeating itself but this time with the West African content taking a plunge.
Magic Showcase which is being used for leverage has a ton of content from the channel but MultiChoice opted to exclude the channel without taking to account the amount of unseen content on the package including Legacy and My Kitchen Rules SA.
Is Mzansi Wethu ever going to get any of the above-mentioned shows if Mzansi Magic has its own baggage to worry about?
From what was understood as mentioned earlier, Novela Magic is how you see Moja 9.9. on Moja Love - repeats. But the moment the channel starts reducing the amount of Mzansi Magic or Africa Magic it's very much possible for MultiChoice to reconsider.
At the same time, I feel that it would be best for Mzansi Wethu to pull a kykNET with their Turkish offering it but this time distribute a number of content from M-Net's local channels and scrap Mzansi Music and that outdated kids block for which kykNET & Kie had restructured.
I mean the channel is accessible to Premium clients so all the more sense to have it restructured. If anyone wants kids shows tune into JimJam and Mzansi Music already has a dedicated channel which you can pour your heart's content.

Magic Showcase Vs. Novela Magic: List Of Content You'll Probably Miss Out On? + Potential Content Suggestions
MultiChoice and M-Net decided to the halt the distribution of Novela Magic to consumers in South Africa with the channel expected to go off air from 27 November as it will be supplemented by two other channels ahead of time, Magic Showcase and CineMagic.
Novela Magic offered a lot of content from Mzansi Magic which is enough justification to have it removed but the brand existed for multiple brands as well including Africa Magic, Maisha Magic, Zambezi Magic, Pearl Magic and Maningue Magic.
While as Mzansi Magic and kykNET can make up for the chunk of SA content alongside kykNET & Kie, kykNET Lekker and Mzansi Magic. Viewers will basically lose access to content from the above-mentioned brands with Access receiving the most blows.
Africa Magic hosts a ray of linear channels none of which can be viewed on the Access package so it's bye bye to The Johnsons, Zuba and Battleground unless you plan to upgrade to the Family package in order to continue watching these shows or Easyview better yet.
Magic Showcase is a general entertainment channel which will be sourcing out content from Mzansi Magic such as Being Bonang and The Imposter while as supplying content outside of that namely Zuba, Arendsvlei and Legacy.
All this kind of gave me an idea for another channel which is hovered with rebroadcasts and basically a waste to Compact bouquets, Mzansi Wethu.
As much as MultiChoice refuses to acknowledge the fact Mzansi Wethu is basically how Magic Showcase could have been had they made it accessible to more consumers. I know I say this channel sucks a lot but maybe there is a way to keep it onboard.
In July, kykNET introduced their Turkish offering on kykNET & Kie which kind of helped give the channel its own identity as opposed to being viewed as kykNET+. Mzansi Wethu could do something similar but instead of sourcing Turkish they go for African.
Africa Magic Family already supplies Isibaya to their audiences so what's the harm in getting Battleground and Zuba onto Mzansi Wethu as it can help reduce that repeat tier tendancy for those using the Compact bouquet.
Novela Magic To Stop Airing On DStv In South Africa From November 27, 2022
MultiChoice and M-Net will be rolling out two new 18 hour entertainment channels Magic Showcase and CineMagic to their Easyview customers later in November. Prior to its launch, it was announced Novela Magic will no longer be accessible in South Africa.
Novela Magic launched in November 2020 as Africa's first Pan-African telenovela channel featuring content from Africa Magic, Mzansi Magic and Zambezi Magic namely Zuba, Isibaya, The Johnsons and Brotherhood Brethren.
The channel was meant to be used as a gateway to content that was restricted from certain regions but as seen in the past years the channel offers a large chunk of Mzansi Magic which is what led to its demise for consumers in South Africa and freedom from execution in other countries.
Magic Showcase is set to rectify that error but to less DStv customers as MultiChoice is trying their best to limit the amount of repeats accessible on a package as seen with kykNET Lekker, Maisha Magic POA and Moja 9.9.
Consumers who wish to see further seasons of Zuba and Battleground can tune into Africa Magic Family and Urban while the large chunk of SA content on the channel can be accessed through Mzansi Magic, kykNET, Mzansi Wethu, kykNET & Kie and kykNET Lekker.
Comedy Central and MTV were added respectively to Compact and Family bouquets to make up for the cancellation of Novela Magic. Access customers welcomed a further two channels to their package last month, BET and Moonbug Kids.

New Channel Alert (Rumour): Novela Magic Ripoff Magic Showcase Coming Soon To DStv???
Novela Magic is Pan-African telenovela channel basically the first of its kind to ever be introduced in the region. As you know, M-Net ain't investing in any new content for the channel as it airs yesteryear stock to M-Net's lower grade channels, Mzansi Wethu and Africa Magic Family.
Basically, M-Net has been building up their local portfolio by launching various adaptations to Mzansi Magic such as Pearl Magic, Maisha Magic and Abol TV. As some viewers are aware, the content basically dramas viewed on this brand can be viewed through Novela Magic.
As much as one would want to complain about the offering the load of repeats on a "new channel" you got to admit M-Net beat you to the punch with this one. Now viewers are enjoying the best of Mexican, Indian, Turkey and African stories.
Now there's just 1 problem, MultiChoice might be looking to launch a second Novela Magic type channel as several content which might as well have folded under the current Novela Magic had been added to this supposed channel: Arendsvlei, Legacy, Enakhe and Zuba.
Honestly I do wish this channel burns off the production table like that Via+ channel but it's launch seems definite from the looks of it. Although I see no reason of launching another Novela Magic.
The current one has plenty of repeats and certain shows have the audacity of restarting from scratch e.g. Zuba so I don't see the need of having such a channel a lot of consumers will probably get irritated by.
Perhaps this channel just like kykNET Lekker and Moja 9.9. is catered to certain DStv customers e.g. Easyview as they don't have any means to view the local junk from M-Net. But how many people are still using that package if there's plenty to watch on Openview.
The only thing I'm curious about the channel would be availability and it's presence as it is most channels entering DStv usually come to consume the place of another channel so you never know with MultiChoice.
Seeing as Novela Magic is on channel 165 perhaps this possible new channel will be allocated on channel 169 where ROK3 is sitting. Honestly, a lot of channels seem like potential targets e.g. ID, Real Time, NTA International, Spice TV, TLNovelas and Tshwane TV.

Roundups #98: JimJam Acquired Broadcasting Rights To Mumfie, Brotherhood Brethren Resurfaces On Novela Magic And New Series Queer Of Jozi Launching Soon On MTV Africa
Mumfie Travels The Globe With New Sales
Mumfie is on the move. After debuting earlier this year in France and Italy, Zodiak’s preschool series about a lovable elephant is now branching out from that starting point, thanks to a raft of new sales brokered by distributor Banijay Kids and Family.
The CG-animated series (78 x seven minutes) has been picked up by ITVBe in the UK; Cartoonito (Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, South Korea); AMC Network International’s preschool channel JimJam (CEE, MENA, Portugal); SVT (Sweden); and ejunior (UAE).
Based on the ’90s series Magic Adventures of Mumfie that was created by Britt Allcroft (Thomas & Friends), Mumfie tells the story of a friendly, optimistic elephant and his best friends—a flying pig named Pinkey and a color-changing jellyfish named Jelly Bean—as they find adventure in daily life.
More entertainment coming to Novela Magic
Action drama Brotherhood Brethren was one of the Nigerian series from Africa Magic that hit television screens in 2019. Also on Showmax, the show has been met with lots of enthusiasm from fans online.
Brotherhood Brethren tells the story of two adopted brothers – Dobara aka Bara (Etim Effiong) and Dagogo aka Dags Kurukeme (Frankincense Eche-Ben). Through Bara, we’re introduced to the men and women of the elite crime-fighting squad, Special Crimes Unit (SCU), and the challenges they face in their quest to rid the city of crime, particularly the notorious Aja Isale Eko gang.
Brethren is produced by ace Nigerian filmmaker, Femi Odugbemi, the brain behind several other successful shows such as Battleground and Tinsel, both on Showmax. Odugbemi has always been known for his penchant to mix veterans and talented newcomers in his cast, and Brethren is no different.
The series premieres 28th September on Novela Magic
The queer community getting more love
MTV, an international reality channel owned by Paramount home to various shows like Catfish, Teen Moms and Ridiculousness alongside award shows and live events is set to introduce a queer centred series, Queers Of Jozi.
Larger than life personalities and the faces of fashion, take on the City Of Gold. Relationships intertwined with drama and tantrums in the ever-evolving life of a Queer.
The series premieres on the 24th October on MTV
[Missed Opportunity]: Expanding The Reach Of Novela Magic Or Telemundo To DStv Easyview
eExtra was ripped off from the DStv platform for at least a month and was reinstated shortly after alongside eToonz, eMovies and eMovies Extra on the DStv platform following pending investigation by the Competition Tribunal which will take at least 6 months to resolve.
MultiChoice appears to have moved on although they don't put it in writing recent additions like DreamWorks and Movie Room has led me to believe that the pay-tv company has no plans to keep these channels past 6 months or at least a portion of channels.
As outlined by MultiChoice, eMedia Investments bulk of content doesn't fit into their 5 year content strategy for which the brand had stated consumers are viewing more DStv content than actual original programs although 2 appear to fit that description.
On top of that, they had mentioned that they won't be able to launch as much channels as they used to in the past year due to transponder constraints so whenever a new channel comes it usually has to occupy the space taken away from another channel.
In court, MultiChoice stated 3 SABC channels would accommodate for the 4 e.tv channels in the coming future but that's the thing. If anyone is similar with the SABC then you can already imagine how the content would differ.
Instead of Postman Pat you get Words And Numbers and Die Put is supplemented by past episodes of 90 Plein Street and although some of this content can benefit some audiences it's completely different.
The package I'm targeting for this article had to be Easyview cause as seen by several consumers it's one of the least valuable packages in the market with few exceptions being wrestling on TNT alongside the lifestyle and factual entertainment viewed on Real Time.
On top of that, the package isn't fortunate with additions and at times replacements for whenever a channel is removed from the DStv platform which was the case with eMedia's 4 channels of which the package inherited just 2 channels.
When they were unexpectedly scrapped from the DStv platform. Multichoice rather just add 1 channel to supplement for 2 worse is when the channel doesn't cater to a lot of viewers, PBS Kids.
MultiChoice could have done a lot for the package especially since they lost another notable brand in 2020, SABC Encore which was one of the few watchable channels on the platform and although there's plenty of channels for adults than kids as outlined only a few are worth the value.
Novela Magic or Telemundo would have done better to fill the void MultiChoice left for fans of Kuiertyd. Although, they wouldn't be better Elif, Doodsondes or Stiletto Vendetta these channels have something in common character driven content.
Aside from the content, these channels have a high level of repeats although NBCUniversal doesn't see it the channel has fallen in terms of quantity while as Novela Magic repeats from other M-Net local channels would have given them some outlet to view the bulk of local content.

New Series Alert: Zabalaza Coming Soon To Novela Magic
Novela Magic, Africa's first and only telenovela channel celebrating African storytelling will reintroduce another series to DStv customers which is the 2013 South African television soap from Mzansi Magic titled Zabalaza.
Zabalaza follows the Cele family from Soweto who seemingly have it all only for secrets to emerge, promises to be broken and for the family members to turn on one another for personal gain.
Seputla Sebogodi takes the lead as Jazzman Cele, with Baby Cele by his side as Gasta, the first lady of the Cele household. Other well-known actors include Zandile Msutwana, Manaka Ranaka, Mbali Ntuli, Thami Afrika, Matli Mohapeloa and Khanya Mkhangisa, among others.
Zabalaza was produced by Portia Gumede and Lebone Maema at Urban Brew Studios as an addition to the "Lokshin" stable of films and television series. The series is in vernacular Nguni languages with the inclusion of English and English subtitles.
The first season airs daily at 19:30 from Thursday 1st September joining other former Mzansi Magic soaps such as iNkaba and Isibaya alongside other local dramas like Suidooster.

As Predicted, PBS Kids Replaces eToonz On DStv Easyview With eExtra Possibly Being Phased Out For Either Telemundo And/Or Novela Magic
MultiChoice continues disregarding the existence of Easyview package which is set to lose 2 channels by the end of March. As seen in the previous week, MultiChoice found the relevant replacement for some packages.
Through an enquiry it was revealed that Easyview customers would be getting the educational channel, PBS Kids (channel 313) in place of entertainment channel eToonz (channel 311) and of course MultiChoice couldn't bother to mention that when announcing the addition of KIX to Access.
PBS Kids was available on the Easyview package when the channel was exclusive to the DStv app but likely due to costs it was put on Access when it launched in 2019.

- tvN pushing to become a permanent linear channel in Africa

- Multichoice won't be adding anymore community channels
PBS Kids features a broad mix of live-action and animated children's programs which are designed for improving early literacy, math, and social-emotional skills of young children aged 3-9.
Also joining eToonz out the door by the end of March is eExtra of course details of a potential replacement channel is still awaiting confirmation. According to sources, either Telemundo from NBCUniversal or M-Net's Novela Magic will be slotted on the package.
Novela Magic and Telemundo both offer their fair share of repeats compared to Zee World and Star Life. So the idea of one of these two even both being made available to the platform doesn't seem far fetched.

- Lifetime could be on the chopping block on DStv
- tvN pushing to become a permanent linear channel in Africa
- SABC Encore and SABC Children channel might be in development
- Could eNCA launch on Openview?
If you browse each DStv package, only Easyview customers don't have access to the existing bulk of local dramas spread across the M-Net channels if anything that channel will benefit that package. This channel will never make up for the loss of eExtra if anything you could consider it a suitable successor to SABC Encore.
Telemundo on the other hand could make up for eExtra as the content seen on both outlets were produced outside of Africa. The problem only dives down to the location in which these programs were filmed which can be a problem to some viewers as one had Turkish and Korean and this one Mexican.

Telemundo Africa Debuts The Much Anticipated Medical Drama Nurses, Major Blows On SABC 3 As The Telenovela Bonanza Comes To An End And Novela Magic Broadcasts A Repeat Of Ajoche
Telemundo becomes a medical center
Several weeks ago, I unveiled a set of programming for the channel and Nurses is the second show to make the list. Can't say I'm entirely surprised as a portion of their lineup can be predictable at times.
María Clara González works as head of nurses in one of the most recognized hospitals in the city: the Santa Rosa. Life would seem to smile at her were it not for the monotony into which her marriage with Román has fallen, with whom she has two children.
The series was produced by RCN Television the same company that brought Law Of The Heart last year and also in charge of the upcoming series set to air on the channel Coffee With A Woman's Fragrance.
The series airs daily at 22:00 CAT from 15 February replacing 100 Days To Fall In Love.
The Soapy FanFest is over for now
Last year, S3 unveiled another design for their brand and invested in more international content. At the time, the SABC had stated that there were uncertain if these new changes will have a positive effect.
So far none of their efforts seemed to be working out. Through 2021 ratings stats you can clearly see that viewers aren't paying much attention to the primetime offering aside from The Estate which is likely a gonner.
S3 also offered two telenovelas Orphan Of The Nation and The Red Room both of which are being seem to be sharing the same casket as the local drama as both slots will soon be occupied by sitcoms.
The Red Room concludes next week Tuesday with Jim Carrey's comedy drama Kidding taking up the space. The series follows follows Jeff Piccirillo, aka beloved children's television presenter Mr. Pickles, appreciated by children and parents alike.
We've got some more African telenovelas coming up
Novela Magic, Africa's first and only telenovela channel featuring content viewed on other M-Net channels in several markets is adding another series to their schedule in the coming weeks, Ajoche.
Produced for Africa Magic by young Nigerian producer Mr. James Omokwe, Ajoche opens up with the Idoma village of Ocholuje and the everyday business of palatial living. When the beloved wife of Ocholuje’s King Odaleko is brutally murdered while pregnant, his grief drives him to wipe out the entire neighboring land of Aboh in a genocidal massacre.
Ajoche features Big Brother alumni Bassey, Tokunbo Idowu (T-Boss) and Lilian Afegbai. Other cast members include industry veterans Hilda Dokubo, Femi Branch, William Benson, Lota Chukwu, and a host of others.
The first season airs daily at 21:00 from 11 January replacing Battleground.

NEW CHANNEL ALERT: Novela Magic Coming Soon To DStv?
In an upfront in August, MultiChoice mentioned that they're working on four Pan-African channels. Three will be added for specific regions while one being a lifestyle channel will likely be available across Africa.
Now this channel is unheard of perhaps MultiChoice wanted to surprise customers with this station.
The channel airs old programs from Zambezi Magic and Africa Magic such as Forbidden, Unbroken, Battleground and Zuba.
There's reasons why the channel could be in South Africa. For starters, Mzansi Magic and KykNet have their own repeat channels (KykNet Lekker and Mzansi Wethu) for lower bouquets except for Africa Magic.
So perhaps the idea for this channel was to repeat certain content from the rest of Africa to help fill up its airtime and make it unique perhaps they'll even supply content from Maisha Magic and Pearl Magic.
At the moment, MultiChoice has no details on the channel and in such cases it does imply that they'll be more details in a new month.
Update: Novela Magic launches 27 November At 6pm CAT on DStv channel 165 maybe this is their way of making up for the delay of tvN. The channel is rumoured to also be added onto the Family package it could change.
