Recap To Last Month: Purged Programming From Former DStv Channel NWTV Launches On Soweto TV

Also Read

A few months ago, MultiChoice had axed two provincial channels on the DStv platform, One Freestate Televisual and NWTV. After residing on the platform for less than 3 months, MultiChoice had silently axed the channels without any prior notice.

Since then, One Freestate Televisual remained on StarSat with the TV channel that had attempted to negotiate a new agreement with MultiChoice. NWTV on the other hand is not viewable anywhere in Africa thus concluding its run as a linear channel.

MultiChoice in these endeavors had removed seven additional channels: 1Magic, Me, People's Weather, Emmanuel TV, B4U Movies, Ginx eSports TV and Deutsche Welle. Since then only select shows from a minority from these brands were available for viewing.

As seen through the programme guide, Soweto TV scooped up rights to one of the few programs from NWTV, The Girl. It followed a young girl named Belky who grew up in a jungle after being abducted had escaped years later and united with her family.

The problem pertaining to The Girl's return on TV screens would be the broadcaster, Soweto TV. NWTV was catered to multiple countries within Southern Africa while Soweto TV is only situated in South Africa therefore alienating an audience from programming.

The Girl airs daily at 08:30 and 17:30 on Soweto TV.

Development Alert (Rumour): Tourism Queen Has An Upcoming DStv Project, Might Roll Out By Next Year

Also Read

Tourism Queen Beauty Pageant South Africa is a one stop Fashion Beauty and Tourism event targeting to promote and explore the adventures in all corners of our beautiful country South Africa. This event is involves individuals from across all nine provinces to take part in this annual event.

Through their socials, it was revealed they would be made available on the DStv platform through an "independent channel" and would broadcast on online platforms. Not is known in regards to the channel or what content would be made accessible to consumers.

During the month, MultiChoice had begun field work on another TV channel which is using the frequencies of Novela Magic. Judging by the programming, this could be a female tailored channel and this would pertain shows like The Girl and also Ladies In Heels.

Taking a look at Tourism there's Dingo Untamed and Travelling Unplugged while the Queen portion of the brand has The Girl and doccies centred on Angelina Jolie and Marilyn Monroe so would it seem surprising if this two happened to be possible be the same channel.

The only setback here is that Tourism Queen is being advertised as an HD brand while the current tests reflect an SD channel. If anything, it's likely a different channel probably in relation with Soweto TV and Tourism Queen would serve as a separate addition on DStv.

Compared to previous years, MultiChoice has been very slow in allocating new channels and if Tourism Queen were to surface on the platform. Could it be added as a new addition to the platform or in place of another TV channel like Spice TV (or eExtra) for instance.

Development Alert: Novela Magic's Frequencies Being Used On An Upcoming DStv Channel

Also Read

Novela Magic was Africa's first attempt at a channel for locally produced telenovelas. Operated by M-Net, the channel would source content from various local channels already viewed on DStv such as Zambezi Magic, Maisha Magic and Pearl Magic to make them more reachable.

After its two year run, further content from Novela Magic was folded under Magic Showcase. A channel curated specifically for their DStv Easyview consumers in Southern Africa alongside GOtv Lite consumers in ROA.

During the month, it was reported MultiChoice might be looking to add possibly their last channel of the year. A name has yet to be announced but from what we could gather this may have some relation to Soweto TV pertaining to the shows: Faith Cooking and Ladies In Heels.

We were also able to uncover that MultiChoice was disposing the corpse of previous TV channels or basically ones managed by M-Net with VUZU's frequencies used on Play Room and now Novela Magic for this supposed channel.

Unlike previous weeks, MultiChoice has managed to add more shows and surprisingly movies to the line-up. So it's only a matter of time till we get a name for this anticipated addition alongside a date and package which we presume would be on Easyview later in December.

Development Alert: Caracol Televisión's The Girl To Rollout On An Upcoming DStv Channel

Also Read

During the week, it was reported MultiChoice had begun work another TV channel likely pertaining to Soweto TV due to the latter Faith Cooking and Ladies In Heels. Prior to the channel's possible rollout, One Freestate Televisual will be allocated on the DStv platform.

From what we can gather, this is most likely another community channel I mean it wouldn't seem far fetched. Firstly, they're currently working through an SD feed and most premium channels like BBC Lifestyle, Mzansi Magic and TLC had all been migrated to HD.

If it's any consolation, this untitled TV channel had acquired broadcasting rights to The Girl (La Niña) from Caracol Televisión while as Soweto TV broadcasts River Of Passions (Niche, Lo Que Diga El Corazón) - coincidence.

Based on real life events, it follows a young woman who was part of the guerrilla force now seeks a better life in the city. She wants to study medicine, to heal instead of hurt, but she'll have a challenge since being part of outside-the-law groups always leaves consequences.

The series was broadcast on Caracol Televisión from 26 April 2016 to 16 September 2016 with 86 episodes each with a 45 minute duration. It starred Ana María Estupiñán as Belky/Sara, Sebastián Eslava as Manuel Monsalve and Marcela Benjumea as Mireya Pinzón.

New Channel Alert (Rumour): Soweto TV's Ladies In Heels And Faith Cooking To Resurface On Upcoming DStv Channel

Also Read

During the day, MultiChoice had begun work on another TV channel using the test cards of a untitled movie channel likely from M-Net Movies. Currently there's only four shows that had been registered: Faith Cooking, Dingo Untamed, Ladies In Heels and Kasie Vibes.

From what we can make here this is not the full 24 hour lineup as the schedule runs through Sunday and thereafter not much is seen by then. Similar to Zambezi Reloaded, it's currently unknown whether this would will eventually surface on their platform by the looks of the EPG.

But from what two of the shows on the list Ladies In Heels and Faith Cooking entails, this could be an additional channel for Soweto TV. I mean why not Tshwane TV and GauTV are both managed by Zallywood Inc. so why not give Soweto TV a sibling of its own.

Although this section of DStv is very much discarded, Soweto TV was ranked as the leading community stations when it started out in 2008. It was also an eye grabber to various international shows like Maury, Curb Your Enthusiasm and even Steve Harvey.

In other developments, MultiChoice will be rolling 1FSTV to the DStv platform in the coming weeks. It doesn't seem like very much of a coincidence that they'd roll yet another community channel in the decade to sort of compliment the existing offering.

Recap To The Week (Another Annekan Die Swa Kry): River Of Passion Rolls Out On Soweto TV, Complicated Love And Love Or Poison Axed On The Channel Thus Concluding The Run Of Glow TV

Also Read

Soweto TV, a community channel that is far past its prime or at least with the way their licenced content pan out had acquired rights to the Colombian telenovela, Niche, Lo Que Diga El Corazón (Beats Of Love). For weird reasons, it's distributed as River Of Passions.

Interesting to note, this is a Caracol Television series the same people behind Hidden Passions and Ana's Revenge on Telemundo and they already offer Sinú, Río De Pasiones (River Of Passions) so the titles probably got mixed up as seen with Annekan Die Swa Kry.

Synopsis for River Of Passions:

Ivan Cuero is a total ball of energy when he's on stage. He carries the passion and the feeling awakened by music and love in his voice.

The musical drama stars Jair Romero as the titular character, Abril Schreiber as Marisol López, Helga Díaz as Luz Mariela, Fiona Horsey as Lida.

River Of Passions airs daily at 08:30 and 9 hours later at 17:30 with an Omnibus every Saturday at 09:00. As seen in their updated EPG, Bollywood dramas Love Or Poison and Complicated Love have been phased out thus concluding the last remains of Glow TV.

Nismedia, the company behind Glow TV has been looking to find other means to continue the channel but with no avail. They're currently looking to take legal action against eMedia Investments in regards to the condition in which the channel was removed.

Recap To Last Year: Glow TV Resurfaces On MultiChoice's DStv And Not Long Ago On Digital Media And StarTimes' StarSat

Also Read

Last month, Nismedia filed a legal appeal against eMedia Investments regarding the termination of Glow TV on Openview platform similar to MultiChoice regarding eMedia's 4 channels which remain onboard DStv following pending investigation.

Amidst the demise, eMedia Investments unveiled the next phase of their pay-tv venture Openview Ultra, Spice TV. It consists of the highly anticipated, Zee Family and Star Select which celebrate Bollywood culture with made for TV films and series.

As seen by the end of February, Glow TV was terminated not only on Openview but StarSat as well meaning that just like OnseTV and MyTV the channel isn't viewable anywhere in South Africa or at least that's we all thought matter of a fact but it turns out the brand is still active.

Just like Gallop TV revived Tellytrack, Soweto TV distributes Glow TV in a 1 hour segment, Glow TV Plus. The block is currently reserved for former Glow TV soaps such as Complicated Love (Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka) and Love Or Poison (Vish Ya Amrit: Sitara).

To think, MultiChoice opted to discontinue carriage of Glow TV in 2018 and few months ago StarSat did something similar with their consumers and now fate led this channel to be reintroduced on both platforms despite the relationship between the brands.

Glow TV Plus represents the remains of Glow TV which comes with various limitations first it's part of a 1 hour segment meaning not much Glow TV to browse and another accessibility as Soweto TV can only be viewable in the surrounding area alongside DStv and StarSat.

Soweto TV is not available on Openview and consumers wishing to watch Glow TV would need to pay monthly through DStv (R29p/m, Easyview) or StarSat (R120, Special) and only a selected number can afford the monthly rate - the Ultraview effect.

Not much is known on whether Glow TV Plus will continue to be made available on Soweto TV following the termination of Glow TV. As much as the details regarding Glow TV's distribution agreement with Soweto TV for Complicated Love and Love Or Poison.

Complicated Love airs weekdays at 8:30 and 21:00 followed by omnibus every Saturday at 4:00 while as Love Or Poison airs weekdays at 8:00 and 21:30 followed by an omnibus every Saturday at 09:00 on Soweto TV (DStv 251/StarSat 488).

Roundups #33: Maury Cancelled After 31 Seasons, Cartoonito EMEA Acquired Broadcasting Rights To Cocomelon And Piet's Sake Makes Its Linear Debut On e.tv

Maury calls it quits

NBCUniversal on Sunday confirmed that its daytime syndicated talk show Maury will be wrapping with the current season, saying that it was a mutual decision between the studio and veteran host Maury Povich to end the talker made when Maury was most recently renewed in 2020 through the 2021-22 season.

“Maury and I decided two years ago that this season would be the farewell season for the show, and while his retirement is bittersweet, we are so happy for him to be able to spend more time on the golf course,” Tracie Wilson, EVP, NBCUniversal Syndication Studios, said in a statement to Deadline. “Maury is a television icon, a pop culture legend and we couldn’t be more proud to have been a part of his incredible career.”

“Six years ago when I was ready to retire, my the NBCUniversal family asked me to continue the show,” he said. “Even though I told them I was ready for assisted living, out of loyalty to NBCUniversal and my more than 100 staff and crew members, Tracie Wilson and I agreed to one more deal. I’m so proud of my relationship with NBCUniversal and all those who worked on the Maury show but as I occasionally tell my guests on Maury, ‘Enough, already!'”

The series was once available on Soweto TV before it went under new management.

Cocomelon expands to more households

Moonbug Entertainment has inked its first multi-territory linear deal, partnering with WarnerMedia to air preschool series CoComelon across EMEA.

Under the deal, WarnerMedia has picked up 170 episodes of the popular series to air on the conglom’s fledgling preschool block Cartoonito across more than 115 countries in the area this year. The brand’s 3D-animated musical episodes, which cover educational topics and nursery rhymes, will roll out in multiple languages, including German, French and Italian.

This partnership expands on Moonbug and WarnerMedia’s previous deal to air CoComelon on Cartoonito in the UK , where it rolled out in April 2021. That was the brand’s first move onto linear TV.

More eVOD originals surface on your TV screens

eMedia Investments told the media lies when saying viewers had to wait a year to see the bulk of content launching exclusively on the platform but that was already suspected when Dokter Ali aired on eExtra a few months after debuting on eVOD.

According to sources, Piet's Sake starring Jamie Bartlett and Kenneth Nkosi is set to be the first eVOD original production alongside Is'phindiselo to make way to e.tv amidst the channel's lineup changes.

Piet is an old school Afrikaans businessman who had immense success during apartheid, however, he is finding it very difficult to navigate in the new and transformation pro South Africa. When he loses all his contracts, he wishes he black, in a spiteful manner in front of one of his employees who he mistreats. In the morning, his wishes have come true, but not in the way he would have wanted. He has swapped lives with Mandla who now is “Piet” the boss and he is Mandla the cleaner. The only way things will go back to normal is after he has learnt an important life lesson.

Piet's Sake airs at 8pm on Saturday, 2 April and rumor has it more eVOD titles will debut on the channel including Atlantis and Daryn's Gym.
