Has Cartoonito Become Irrelevant To DStv?

Cartoonito is a preschool channel operated by Warner Bros. Discovery offering fun, engaging and comedic content. It is home to shows like Tom And Jerry and Batwheels alongside third party shows from Grizzy And The Lemmings and Cocomelon.

It was to meant to serve as some successor to Boomerang and since it's inception there's been a lot of mixed feelings about the brand.

Boomerang was basically the Comedy Central of children's television with various content from Looney Tunes, Tom And Jerry and Scooby-Doo. All this was kind of trimmed down with Cartoonito in favour of more age appropriate shows.

The thing is preschool was never really the problem or at least not entirely. For DStv consumers there was plenty of this on JimJam, Cbeebies and Nick Jr. there was no need for another preschool channel.

Boomerang was preschool inclusive and the existing offering on the channel gave this content some elevation. But too much of it led to Cartoonito's rapid decline in popularity as older audiences felt alienated by the increased age appropriate shows.

In recent months, Warner Bros. Discovery had moved several shows from the brand to Cartoon Network including Looney Tunes Cartoons and Scooby-Doo And Guess Who?. By doing that, consumers would just further distance themselves from the brand.

DStv Customers Are Shocked And Utterly Disappointed By MultiChoice's Decision To Possibly Cancel TLC, HGTV And Food Network

MultiChoice and Warner Bros. Discovery might have settled their carriage dispute as 8 out of the 12 channels might be exiting DStv. These include TLC, Real Time, Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, Food Network, HGTV, Cartoonito And CNN.

A termination notice had already been spotted for these channels and it as goes follows:

Dear viewer, please note this channel may no longer form part of our content line-up from 31 December 2025. Thank you.

The channels in question come as a shock to viewers like myself specifically for TLC as it's basically what Bravo is to NBCUniversal or MTV is to Paramount. But this was to be expected I mean Canal+ Afrique only distribute 5 channels from the brand including CNN.

I'd like to believe that more channels could end up joining Discovery Channel, Discovery Family, Cartoon Network and CNN.

If you had to sum it up, several factors contribute to the possible demise of these brands firstly MultiChoice had implied renewing their agreement with the company had been deemed non-viable. This is where brands like Food Network and CNN factored in.

Another may have something to with their viewership particularly for the likes of Travel Channel. Canal+ is shedding costs at MultiChoice and one way would probably be phasing out niche and redundant brands.

As for the content, MultiChoice had stated they're more than willing to replace these channels which does lead us to wonder. Could these replacements perhaps carry shows like 90 Day Fiance and Evil Lives Here I mean it wouldn't seem far fetched.

Warner Bros. Discovery had run into similar issues in New Zealand and since then channels have come in place to carry this content. MultiChoice had done similar actions in the past with the likes of Animal Planet (under Real Time) and ITV Choice (under M-Net).

Developing Story: Channels Likely Going Dark On DStv Include TLC, Real Time, Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, Food Network, HGTV, Cartoonito And CNN

As consumers have already heard, talks between MultiChoice and Warner Bros. Discovery regarding the carriage agreement for Cartoon Network and 11 other channels are on the line. MultiChoice sent a notice out earlier in the month about the pending disaster.

Since then, a petition had started to garner traction online from a concerned DStv subscriber and has since crossed the 300 milestone.

At the time, it was stated by MultiChoice that should a new agreement not be reached consumers would lose 12 additional channels by 31 December 2025. But that may not be the case for Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, Discovery Family and TNT.

Termination cards are being spotted on TLC, Real Time, HGTV, Travel Channel, Food Network, Cartoonito, CNN International and Investigation Discovery with the following message:

Dear viewer, please note this channel may no longer form part of our content line-up from 31 December 2025. Thank you.

MultiChoice had implied that Warner Bros. Discovery is asking for too much money to extend the carriage agreement for these 8 channels. Honestly, I was right to suspect that Food Network or even HGTV are likely goners in this carriage dispute.

The fact MultiChoice states "may no longer" doesn't mean their fates are set in stone just yet but that some progress has already been established. It's possible that some of these 8 could remain onboard I mean Canal+ Afrique does offer CNN International.

But as of right now, MultiChoice had extended its DStv Upsize promotion which can only imply several scenarios. Firstly talks between the two extend to 2026 which is unlikely and, second is that 8 channels are likely done for and this promotion is just a distraction.

Is The Cat Really Out Of The Bag For MultiChoice And Warner Bros. Discovery??? As The Channels Remain On Canal+ Afrique In A Separate Agreement

MultiChoice has sent notice to various informing them that Warner Bros. Discovery's slate of channels would be exiting DStv by the of December. This comes after Paramount announced plans to shutter CBS JusticeCBS RealityBET and MTV Base on the platform.

Warner Bros. Discovery currently has the largest linear portfolio with MultiChoice being 12 channels as opposed to Disney and Paramount who offer 5 to 6 channels. These includes brands Discovery Channel, TLC, HGTV, Cartoon Network and CNN.

There's a strong possibility that Canal+ following its takeover of MultiChoice will likely to reduce the offering. As it understood, MultiChoice is bleeding subscribers or in general losing money and Canal+ is trying to put out these flames.

MultiChoice's previous owners were more likely to retain these 12 channels compared to the French broadcaster. When they mentioned potentially replacing these channels it could imply doing away with Bobby Flay and Fixer Home Fabulous.

MultiChoice's French African equivalent Canal+ Afrique distribute Warner Bros. Discovery's cable networks in a separate agreement. Large number of premium channels are excluded from their offering including TLC, HGTV and Food Network.

Through M7 Group, it's European equivalent offers HBO, Discovery Historia, Discovery Life, Cartoon Network and Cartoonito through Canal+ Polska. Channels to be excluded can also range from Discovery Channel and Investigation Discovery.

In the event that both parties come to an agreement it's likely that Discovery Channel, TLC, Cartoon Network and CNN will continue on the platform. But to save up on costs, Canal+ may look to remove channels which are deemed non viable or repetitive.

Check our previous story: this could as well range from HGTV, Food Network or Real Time. Another could as well be that Discovery Family, Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel get the axe while Real Time is all that's left of the flock.

MultiChoice may notify consumers of channel terminations but this isn't their first rodeo as a similar situation occured with Lifetime, History and C+I before the company opted to remove only C+I. Even Bloomberg had its feed cut off before getting reinstated.

Channels That Are Likely Safe Or Canned Within MultiChoice's Channel Negotiation Agreement With Warner Bros. Discovery

MultiChoice is set to lose 4 channels by the end of December which include BET, MTV Base, CBS Reality and CBS Justice. There's a chance that more channels could join the list as it's embroiled in a carriage dispute with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Warner Bros. Discovery operates 12 channels on the DStv platform which is the most for any provider in contract with MultiChoice. This includes Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, TNT, CNN, Discovery Channel, TLC, Discovery Family, Real Time, HGTV, Travel Channel, Investigation Discovery and Food Network.

Unless a new agreement is put in place, DStv consumers would start the year with 16 less channels. Here's the thing, MultiChoice likely through its the parent company Canal+ is open to replacing them.

As mentioned, this isn't the first time MultiChoice had been involved in such matters but it is under Canal+. If they're bullish on the matter, then expect for consumers to lose access to Teen Titans GO! and Guy's Grocery Games.

From the looks of things, it appears as if Warner Bros. Discovery is open to retaining these channels or at least a few of them as they mention wanting to reach an agreement that benefits both parties.

Below is channels I believe safe, mild, at risk or likely to get the axe

Could MultiChoice Risk Losing More DStv Channels Ahead Of Paramount Africa's Exit In The Market?

As reported, MultiChoice is set to lose four channels by the end of 2025 including CBS Reality, CBS Justice, BET and MTV Base. This forms part of a corporate restructure at Paramount that will see the closure of several international channels.

In an email sent to various DStv consumers not long ago, MultiChoice has now warned it's subscribers that they could be losing an additional 12 channels by the end of 2025. For sometime, they've been embroiled in a carriage dispute with Warner Bros. Discovery and no agreement is in place.

This means Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, CNN, TNT, Discovery Channel, TLC, Discovery Family, Real Time, Investigation Discovery, Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel could be going dark on DStv and GOtv by 1st January 2026.

MultiChoice has been involved in multiple carriage disputes in the past there was one with A+E Global Media for History, Lifetime and C+I. Followed by eMedia Investments who provide eToonz, eExtra, eMovies and eMovies Extra which dragged on for 2 and half years.

It's currently unclear what led to this but from what I understand Warner Bros. Discovery will be closing off Cartoon Network in New Zealand and possibly Italy. It had been alleged that Warner Bros. Discovery wants more money and MultiChoice refused.

Again nothing is confirmed here but its also been alleged MultiChoice which is now owned by Canal+ wants to pay less for these channels. A few months ago, they decided to reduce payments to various suppliers and contractors by 20%.

But if you had to look at past disputes particularly the one with A+E Global Media there's a strong chance that CBS Justice, CBS Reality, BET and MTV Base won't be the only ones leaving DStv.

"our priority is to provide you with the best entertainment experience at the best possible pricing"

While it's too soon to speculate, MultiChoice does mention wanting to provide the best entertainment experience at the best possible pricing. To me this seems like an indicator that the company could be looking to shed costs or minimise rates.

If there are channels expected to leave DStv soon which I believe might be the case I'd imagine niche brands like Travel Channel would be axed. Followed by TNT as MultiChoice already boasts a diverse lineup of films through M-Net Movies, Movie Room and KIX.

Through an enquiry, MultiChoice had said to DStv subscribers that it is ready to replace Warner Bros. Discovery's TV channels with alternatives. But it's unlikely that all channels would be replaced some like TNT already come with those alternatives.

Cartoon Network, TNT Africa And 12 More Channels Could Be Exiting DStv As MultiChoice And Warner Bros. Discovery Enter A Carriage Dispute

DStv parent MultiChoice Group on Monday sent a warning to its subscribers: that 12 Warner Bros Discovery-owned channels could be removed from all DStv bouquets in the coming weeks should the two parties fail to reach a new distribution agreement.

In a letter, which was sent as an on-screen pop up and e-mail to DStv customers, MultiChoice said it will continue to strive to give customers an “exceptional entertainment package”, whether a new deal is struck or not.

“The distribution agreement between MultiChoice and Warner Bros Discovery is scheduled to end on 31 December 2025. While discussions between the parties continue, no agreement has been reached at this stage. If this remains unchanged, a number of Warner Bros Discovery channels may no longer be available on DStv from 1 January 2026,” MultiChoice said in a letter to subscribers on Monday.

The 12 channels that could be affected are:

• Discovery Channel
• CNN International
• TLC
• Discovery Family
• Real Time
• TNT Africa
• Food Network
• HGTV
• Investigation Discovery
• Cartoon Network
• Cartoonito
• Travel Channel

MultiChoice hinted at a possible refreshed channel line-up in 2026: it said it is “preparing to further strengthen and enrich its line-up with new content, channels and services” in the new year.

The changes will affect all DStv customers across Africa; customers of sister company Showmax will not be affected should the Warner Bros content be removed from DStv.

Subscriber losses

The news comes as MultiChoice parent company, French pay-TV giant Groupe Canal+, stated its commitment to stemming the subscriber decline at MultiChoice. In a presentation to investors, Canal+ revealed that a 1.2 million year-over-year loss in subscribers to the year-ended 31 March had accelerated to 1.4 million year on year by end-June. Canal+ said it will leverage cost optimisation to reset the cost base across its African operations while taking advantage of groupwide technology “synergies” to drive costs down even further.

“What matters most is ensuring that your viewing experience remains rich, diverse and enjoyable. You will continue to enjoy an exceptional entertainment experience across your package, supported by strong alternative channels across every genre,” MultiChoice told customers about the Warner Bros Discovery talks.

Could Warner Bros. Discovery Be Moving Various Content From Cartoonito To Cartoon Network In Africa?

In March 2023, it was announced that Boomerang would be rebranding to Cartoonito as part of an alignment strategy. At the time, it was stated that all of Boomerang's shows would be retained once the channel switches to Cartoonito this included shows like Mr. Bean and Looney Tunes Cartoons.

Cartoonito is a preschool brand operated by Warner Bros. Discovery that offers fun and entertaining content for kids and their families. This was this structure the company opted to market in some parts of Europe while others tried to align it with Disney Jr. and Nick Jr.

But alas, Mr. Magoo was announced as a new series for Cartoon Network although being made available to Cartoonito when it was still Boomerang. It could imply one of two scenarios first Warner Bros. Discovery blantly lied another could be that their removals part of the long term goals.

This is what happened to Cartoonito in Latin America when it replaced Boomerang so why would Africa be immune to these changes. Warner Bros. Discovery had a goal and that was to get Boomerang viewers to latch onto Cartoonito to avoid further alienation.

Warner Bros. Discovery in Africa had stated the decision to transform Boomerang into Cartoonito was part of an "alignment strategy". The reality is in most markets Cartoonito is basically another Nick Jr. or Cbeebies with gaps in-between for other content.

Cartoon Network has been getting various content Warner Bros. Discovery marketed for Boomerang like Tiny Toons Looniversity and soon Scooby-Doo And Guess Who?. Even Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated that went to Boomerang after its run has resurfaced on the network.

What happened to Cartoonito retaining all of Boomerang's IPs are these set to become an afterthought?

Cartoon Network will be airing Space Jam: A New Legacy in December and it wouldn't surprise me if it led to the addition of Looney Tunes Cartoons. Some consumers had stated that these shows were too mature for a preschool brand and Warner Bros. Discovery let this subside for almost two years.

They led some people to believe that Cartoonito was Boomerang's equivalent within Africa yet you have all this content on Cartoon Network. In the UK, most of this content including Tiny Toons Looniversity is being distributed on Boomerang.

On the upside, I don't think most consumers would have noticed or cared as much if these shows were to suddenly disappear from Cartoonito. They have prioritised on other shows like Zig & Sharko, Batwheels and Cocomelon it could've been a lot worser had this been done two years earlier.

If anything this change does add more confusion and mystery, Boomerang had prioritized on reruns for their own shows. Seeing as it's no longer Boomerang how much of that would be distributed on Cartoonito because so far it seems like the stars could be aligning with Cartoon Network.

October 2025 On Cartoon Network And Cartoonito Across Africa | Channel Premiere: Tom And Jerry Gokko | Stunts: Cartoon Network Classics | More

Please note this is a drafted version of Cartoon Network and Cartoonito's highlights for October so should we gather more info further adjustments will be made.

Cartoon Network

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball continues the surreal humour and wild storytelling of the multi- award winning The Amazing World of Gumball. Created and executive produced by Ben Bocquelet, this quarter-hour animated comedy series blends an eclectic mix of media styles – including 2D & 3D animation, CGI, puppetry, photorealism and live action – into a wildly imaginative world defined by its vibrant visual style and sharp meta humour.

Trick Or Treat Stunt
It will consist of Halloween themed episodes for shows like Tiny Toons Looniversity, We Baby Bears, Teen Titans GO!, Jellystone, Apple And Onion and Regular Show.

Cartoon Network Classics
90s and 00s fans are in for a treat as Cartoon Network will be allocating more older shows to the lineup as part of a block or stunt with Dexter's Laboratory, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack and The Powerpuff Girls. If anyone had to guess this is probably their version of America's Checkered Past.

Checkered Past was described as a programming block for Cartoon Network's older shows basically what Boomerang offered in the 90s to early 00s or what Boing had been doing for sometime in Africa. Based on the shows in question, Cartoon Network will likely air them in the evening or late nights.

For Samurai Jack, Cartoon Network never aired the fifth season and I can only assume like Adventure Time consumers will never get the final season. Also interesting to note is that the listed shows had been removed from Boing's lineup for consumers in Africa.

Films confirmed for the month include The Powerpuff Girls Movie

Celebrating African Stories On Cartoonito On Youth Day

This Youth Day, Cartoonito celebrates the power of African stories, from homegrown songs and local voices sharing their passions, to fan-favourite Grizzy & the Lemmings landing in the African Savannah. As part of Cartoonito’s Youth Day celebration is Akissi, the pan-African animated special that captures the joy, mischief, and magic of childhood, voiced by none other than Johannesburg’s own Phophi Muleya.

At just 19 years old, Phophi brings fearless energy to the title character, a spirited Ivorian girl full of courage and charm. For her, Youth Day is more than a calendar date, it’s a reminder of what’s possible. “Youth Day reminds me that my voice, and every young person’s voice, matters,” she says.

“I’m living proof that creativity can open doors you never knew existed. From recording lines between classes to seeing my name in the credits of an international show, it’s been magical.”

A Journey Powered by Creativity & Courage

From student to screen star, Johannesburg’s Phophi Muleya brings heart and humour to Akissi, the story of a bold Ivorian girl navigating childhood with courage and curiosity, a perfect reflection of what Youth Day stands for.

“As a young person in South Africa, Youth Day is a reminder that I can push beyond any societal boundaries set for me or the youth,” Phophi explains. “There’s a lot we can learn from the youth of 1976. They proved that when we stand together, we can tackle the challenges that matter most to us as young people.”

She adds, “Voicing Akissi and seeing young Black African children feel seen on screen has been the most rewarding part of this journey. We’re a creative generation — and our stories are powerful tools for connection and change.”

From local songs and African stories to fan favourites, it’s all about homegrown fun this Youth Day

Grizzy and the Lemmings even goes local with two brand-new episodes premiering on Youth Day and every weekday from 17:05. This season returns with its signature slapstick formula rooted in classic silent comedy and cartoon rivalry. Grizzy and the Lemmings land in the African Savannah, where they clash over everything from comfy naps to loud parties and mouth-watering treats. In true “frenemy” fashion, their wild disputes often lead to clever compromises. This batch of episodes sees the Lemmings throwing mega dance parties, playing video games, and stirring up chaos with games like hide-n-seek and racket sports, all while encountering exclusive new characters including elephants, warthogs, ostriches, termites, and grasshoppers.

The full day’s line-up is packed with joy, music, and imagination, a celebration of African childhood in all its creativity and colour:

• Akissi – Join Akissi, the fearless Ivorian girl with a cheeky monkey sidekick, Boubou, as they take on hilarious adventures in a vibrant African city. Voiced by local talent, Phophi Muleya
• Cartoonito Tunes – A catchy, colourful sing-along playlist filled with tunes sung in isiZulu, isiXhosa, English, Pidgin English, and Swahili. It is a joyful celebration of the continent’s sounds
• My African Stories – Children from South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya share heartfelt slices of their daily lives, offering authentic glimpses into different African cultures
• CoComelon: It’s Cody Time – Join the gang on CoComelon Lane and sing and dance along to culturally relevant songs, including ‘Anansi Song’ and ‘African Melody Song’
• Grizzy & the Lemmings: Premiering at 17:05, the new season takes the hilarious rivalry to the African Savannah! Grizzy and the Lemmings discover new ways of turning situations to their advantage and continue fighting over yummy and loud parties. They also confront new dangers, exotic animals, experiment with unseen technologies, and don’t think twice about playing with magical items!

Tune In, Laugh Loud, Dream Big

“I hope every child watching Cartoonito on Youth Day feels proud of who they are and starts believing in what they can become. Our stories matter. Our voices matter,” concludes Phophi Muleya.

Join Cartoonito on Monday, 16 June from 08:00 for a magical Youth Day celebration bursting with local songs, local African stories and familiar characters reimagined in proudly African settings and discover just how far creativity can take Africa’s young dreamers.

CANCELLED!!! Cartoonito USA Is Reportedly Shutting Down On Cartoon Network

In not so shocking news, it appears that Cartoon Network will be booting off Cartoonito from their schedule in the coming weeks. As several viewers had spotted a batch of Looney Tunes shows like New Looney Tunes and Tiny Toons Looniversity airing at 8AM to 9AM.

As Cartoonito continued to garner traction in other parts of the world leading to the launch of a 24 hour network. In the US, Cartoonito had been struggling to find an audience what initially started out as a 4-6 hour block on Cartoon Network had been reduced to an hour and a half.

Warner Bros. Discovery had commissioned several original shows at the time with Tom And Jerry Time and Little Ellen that got booted off, and Bugs Bunny Builders cancelled. The only show that had seen traction on the brand was Batwheels which got renewed for a third season.

While some will cite low viewership in its demise as Cartoonito was rolled out in the US as later as the former Universal Kids. Warner Bros. Discovery is technically insolvent leaving little to no new content for Cartoon Network (aka Zombie TV) so in a way it was probably for the best.

The fact that Cartoonito is dying down doesn't mean that Warner Bros. Discovery is done with preschool just yet as they still have Batwheels. Besides that, Hey BMO and Foster's Funtimes have been greenlight so if anyone had to guess this will form part of Cartoon Network's lineup.

Internationally, Cartoonito will sit put but what might happen is that the brand will rely solely on imports to stay afloat. Not that's it's new or anything, Cartoon Network has been reliant on that in other parts of the world same with Boomerang before it's switch to Cartoonito.

Warner Bros. Discovery is prepping to spinoff its cable networks and I can only assume Cartoon Network (very much like HBO) will be aligned to Streaming & Studios in the US. If Batwheels forms part of its regular lineup it gives the show a chance to get more exposed.

The Tom And Jerry Show Might Be Eyeing A Potential Rollout On Cartoon Network In Some Countries

The Cartoonito channel was launched in most parts of the world by 2023 after debuting on Boomerang years prior offering shows like Cocomelon, Thomas And Friends and Dino Ranch. At the time, Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA had stated that remaining shows from Boomerang would form part of Cartoonito

But that was never the case as Mr. Magoo was picked by Cartoon Network in Africa with the network possibly eyeing The Tom And Jerry Show. It had already been confirmed that the show will be airing in parts of Europe and if I had to guess this may not a complete integration of the franchise.

Prior to this, Cartoon Network (Italy and MENA) had been uploading several content to The Tom And Jerry Show on YouTube and it's too soon to tell when or if the same fate will await Africa. So far Cartoon Network Africa has only uploaded the classic Tom And Jerry (alongside Looney Tunes) so maybe they'll be eyeing those shows.

If I'm being honest, I don't think Cartoon Network Africa will license those shows for the foreseeable future if they hadn't prioritised their older collection of shows for a decade, why start now. Most people that watched the classic iterations aren't watching the channel especially in the era of streaming so again pointless.

Unless this was a reference to The Tom And Jerry Show and Looney Tunes Cartoons then that would make a lot more sense. As for Europe, Warner Bros. Discovery is probably cross promoting/marketing shows we've got plenty of that with Discovery's boutique of channels.

And now even the Warner part is looking to integrate as Harry Potter: Wizards Of Baking is eyeing a debut on Cartoon Network in Africa. This cross promotion is probably Warner's way of giving these shows more exposure some people are like Cartoonito is for toddlers but there's Tom And Jerry so slotting that on Cartoon Network will make them reconsider.
