Competition Commission Recommends Canal+ And MultiChoice Deal With Conditions

MultiChoice sale to Canal+ clears major hurdleGroupe Canal+’s planned acquisition of MultiChoice Group just cleared a major hurdle: the Competition Commission on Wednesday recommended the deal be allowed to proceed – with conditions.

The commission said in a statement that it has recommended to its sister regulator, the Competition Tribunal, that the multibillion-rand broadcasting mega-deal be permitted.

“The commission is of the view that the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market,” it said.

“However, in recognition of the important role played by [MultiChoice] within the broader audiovisual ecosystem in South Africa, and to address public interest concerns raised by various stakeholders, the commission has recommended approval of the merger subject to a number of conditions.”

These conditions include:

• Addressing employment concerns;

• An increase in the shareholding of historically disadvantaged persons (HDPs) and workers in a number of MultiChoice companies;

• Supplier development commitments;

• The merged entity’s continued operation from South Africa;

• Spending commitments on local content;

• The promotion of South African content in new markets;

• Procurement targets from small and black-owned companies; and

• Plurality of television news and export promotion.

The merger parties have agreed to a moratorium on retrenchments for a period of three years following the merger implementation date.

They have also agreed that LicenceCo, a new entity that will house MultiChoice’s South African broadcasting assets, will be majority owned by HDPs and workers. They will also continue “certain corporate social responsibility initiatives such as skills development in the audiovisual industry and sports development”.

Secondary listing

“In addition, Canal+ has undertaken that MultiChoice Group will remain incorporated and headquartered in South Africa, endeavour to promote exports, and will pursue a secondary inward listing on the securities exchange operated by the JSE.”

The total value of public interest commitments made by the merging parties and based on past spend by MultiChoice is projected at R26-billion over the next three years, the Competition Commission said.

“In large mergers, the commission is required to assess and to ultimately make a recommendation to the tribunal. The commission is satisfied that the conditions attached to this merger sufficiently address the concerns raised during the investigation. The matter is now before the tribunal for a final determination,” said deputy competition commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu in the statement.

In a joint statement about the commission’s decision, both the Canal+ and MultiChoice CEOs, Maxime Saada and Calvo Mawela, welcomed the news.

Cartoon Network & Max Greenlight ‘Iyanu’ S2 Plus Two Movies

Following the breakout first season, a second season of Lion Forge Entertainment’s Iyanu, the epic animated fantasy series inspired by Nigerian mythology, along with two feature films expanding its universe, have been greenlit by Cartoon Network and Max.

Based on the graphic novel series Iyanu: Child of Wonder by Roye Okupe, and produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, Iyanu follows a teenage orphan who discovers her divine powers and her destiny to save the ancient kingdom of Yorubaland.

“We’re incredibly inspired by the response to Iyanu and the connection it has made with audiences,” said David Steward II, CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment. “The opportunity to expand this world with a second season and two feature films is a testament to the power of meaningful storytelling and innovative creative collaboration. We’re grateful for the continued support of our partners at Cartoon Network and Max, and it’s been a lot of fun working with Roye to bring Iyanu to life and build the franchise.”

Okupe, who also serves as series creator, executive producer and showrunner, commented, “This is a huge win for Iyanu, Lion Forge Entertainment and YouNeek Studios fans around the world. The support for our show has been nothing short of humbling — and because of that incredible response, we now get to bring the next chapter of Iyanu’s story to life. I’m thrilled to continue expanding the world of Iyanu and the YouNeek YouNiverse, and to share this journey with audiences across the globe. This is just the beginning.”

Season 2 will return with 10 new episodes where we’ll see Iyanu continue to master her burgeoning powers as she finds herself in the midst of a fierce conflict between Elu and the People of the Deep, led by a new formidable opponent. With various factions of Yorubaland vying for powerful divine artifacts that have reemerged, Iyanu strives to find a way to end the war and restore peace. As Team Chosen reunites and tensions rise between old allies and foes, Iyanu must confront even more powerful threats from the Age of Wonders — including secrets buried deep within her own past.

The first of the planned animated film extensions, titled The Age of Wonders, is set to be released later this year. It will transport viewers 500 years before Iyanu’s rise, taking them to a thriving Yorubaland at the peak of its magical civilization. When the embodiment of the seven deadly sins threatens the world, Iyanu’s predecessors join forces with the Divine Ones to prevent the Age of Darkness.

The show’s executive producers are David Steward II, Stephanie Sperber, Kirsten Newlands and Matt Heath from Lion Forge Entertainment, Erica Dupuis of Impact X Capital, Ryan Haidarian of Forefront Media Group and Doug Schwalbe of Superprod. Iyanu was adapted from Okupe’s graphic novel series Iyanu: Child of Wonder by Youneek Studios and Dark Horse Comics.

Iyanu Season 2 will return to Cartoon Network and Max in 2026, followed by the second film currently in production.

Development Alert (Rumour): MultiChoice To Add SuperSport Liyu To DStv Consumers In More African Countries

Beginning in March 2022, the SuperSport channel in Ethiopia – SuperSport Liyu – will herald the start of a bold new foray into Ethiopian football. The channel is likely to be added as a pop-up as it was also spotted on channel 196 - a section for overflow channels.

Not only will SuperSport Liyu be the home of the Ethiopian Premier League, it will broadcast select matches from many of the world’s top leagues, among them La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Europa League, Uefa Champions League and the Uefa Conference League.

MultiChoice hasn't stated the reason for the sudden inclusion of SuperSport Liyu presuming similar to Namibia's NBC a special event is being hosted which concerns consumers in other African countries.

SABC Looking To Produce And License Content To Netflix And MultiChoice

SABC is technically insolvent meaning they've been unable to pay off most of their expenses after the government opted to no longer loan them the cash. This had led to them cancelling various content seen on SABC 2 and 3 including 7de Laan, The Estate and soon Muvhango.

In a turnaround plan, SABC is planning to curate exclusive content for the streamer SABC+ after garnering over 800,000 registered users. This may lead to some restructuring for SABC 2 and 3 as seen with Cartoon Network whose content slate is being optimised for streaming.

With SABC not having much cash to cover the expenses of its cast and crew there's a moderate to high chance that this content for SABC+ will not be fully funded by them. Similar to eVOD and Amazon Prime Video, SABC will likely give this partner an exclusive open window before making available to SABC+.

SABC had stated they would like to work with Netflix and MultiChoice on new content as they have already preexisting deals in place with the latter. Some years back, they had expressed interest in potentially reviving SABC 3's former shows Isidingo and Top Billing.

SABC 3 has been loss maker for sometime and MultiChoice and Netflix have the reach and cash to help these shows garner more scale. Maybe this partnership could lead SABC to revive more content like Soul City as some of their older library of shows are doing well streaming wise.

Reviving the latter on SABC 3 wouldn't really do much revenue wise as seen with Warner Bros. Discovery's animation slate. Internationally, this content is garnering traction while it's viewers in the main market would rather view this content online.

Cartoon Network International Unveils Teaser Trailer And Logo For The Wonderfully Weird World Of Gumball

Cartoon Network International has released a teaser trailer and logo for The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball, a continuation of the BAFTA Children’s, International Emmy, and Annie multi-award-winning series, The Amazing World of Gumball. Produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball is set to launch later this year on Cartoon Network Africa and will stream on Hulu in the United States.

Welcome back to Elmore, where the laws of reality are a joke, and family life is anything but ordinary. Whether he’s battling an evil fast-food empire, facing off against a sentient AI in love with his mom, or trying to stop Banana Joe from wearing pants — Gumball Watterson drags his brother Darwin, sister Anais, and the rest of the town of Elmore along for the ride. With even wilder stories, bigger twists, and surreal humor, the show is so amazing that they had to rename it!

Created and executive produced by Ben Bocquelet,
The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball is a quarter-hour animated comedy series that blends an eclectic mix of media styles – including 2D & 3D animation, CGI, puppetry, photorealism and live action – into a wildly imaginative world defined by its vibrant visual style and sharp meta humour. Matt Layzell and Erik Fountain serve as Executive Producers and Series Directors. The Composer for the series is Xav Clarke and Joe Sparrow serves as Art Director. The stellar voice cast includes Alkaio Thiele as Gumball, Hero Hunter as Gumball’s younger brother Darwin, Kinza Syed Khan as younger sister Anais, Teresa Gallagher as his mother Nicole, and Dan Russell as his father Richard, and many more.

Creator and Executive Producers Ben Bocquelet, Matt Layzell and Erik Fountain say:
“What an amazing opportunity to play with these characters again! Fans can look forward to plenty more antics and misadventures in Elmore because Gumball and Darwin haven’t grown up much since we last saw them…we haven’t either.”

Vanessa Brookman, Warner Bros Discovery, GM, International Kids, Animation and Franchise says: “We thought it was about time that Gumball and the rest of the gang woke up from their catnap, to do what they do best, and delight more fans with more distinctive humour, visual inventiveness and wild adventures. Guided by the immense talents of Ben, Matt, Erik and team, the new series continues Gumball’s legacy as one of the most iconic, groundbreaking and beloved Cartoon Network shows of all time.”

Disney Channel Acquired Broadcasting Rights To Miraculous Chibi, Scheduled For 2026

Miraculous Corp has locked down a launch plan for Miraculous Chibi that will see its new take on flagship series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir roll out on YouTube first in Q4, and then on Disney Branded TV platforms and France’s TF1 in 2026.

Aimed at five to 11s, this 52 x three-minute spinoff (pictured) is banking on “wildly expressive” non-verbal humor to drive the action for a set of superhero protagonists who have been reimagined in a distinctive Japanese art style called chibi, which gives characters smaller features and exaggerated cuteness.

The new treatment—which was teased by Miraculous Corp CEO Andy Yeatman at a MIP Junior presentation last fall—is a longer-form expansion of a previous miniseries called Miraculous Zag Chibi that launched in 2018. It featured 90-second chibi-style clips that have since generated more than 650 million YouTube views. With a similarly snackable format and digital-first rollout, Miraculous Chibi is positioning itself to reach the same online audience first before making its way onto linear platforms.

Miraculous Corp’s strategy borrows a page from Disney, which has given many of its legacy TV characters the chibi treatment in recent years. Disney TV Animation launched a Chibi Tiny Tales shorts series in 2020 that went on to spawn long-form spinoff The Chibiverse two years later.

Could Canal+ Be The End Of DStv?

Canal+ is hoping to finalize it's acquisition of DStv's parent company MultiChoice by the fall of 2025. The deal is expected to bring in cash flow to help them invest in more sporting events and local content but for every action there's always consequences in this case with DStv.

As some consumers have already seen MultiChoice is bleeding DStv customers for sometime with its consumer base that plummeted from 22 million by 2020 to 16 million by 2024. Canal+ should it consume MultiChoice won't sit idly and watch these numbers deteriorate even further.

With MultiChoice operating at a loss, Canal+ could seek to make the acquired company reduce its operational expenses or DStv's case rationalise on things like channels if it means getting potential profit.

MultiChoice could for instance look at how much money is being invested into the BBC to see if it meets up to standards. Even opt to downscale DMX and Trace Urban as Spotify, JOOX and Apple Music have been snatching these consumers from those platforms.

They could also look to integrate/streamline more channels with M-Net Movies 3 and 4 dissolved with the focus shifted onto its premium offering.

As for DStv, Canal+ could use it as an import for Zacu Entertainment and Marodi TV brands based in Francophone Africa with SPI International in Europe. In general, MultiChoice needed Disney, Paramount and BBC to compete on a global scale with Canal+ that dependence had reduced.

It does lead some to wonder if M-Net will undergo further restructuring now that it's operations would be combined with the legends that brought Paddington, Back To Black and Bridget Jones.

Rumour: Disney Channel To Debut A Bold New Look Across Europe And Africa In June

During the month of April, MultiChoice had announced the addition of Disney Channel to DStv Family consumers. It is home to animated shows like Phineas And Ferb and Marvel's Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur alongside live-action series Coop And Cami Ask The World and Raven's Home.

Prior to this, there was reports of a potential HD feed of the channel in development for consumers in South Africa. Now it appears that alongside an HD feed, Disney Channel may be debuting a bold new look soon following its rollout across the United States in 2024.

Kind of strange really as Disney Channel updated its bumpers in March with "up next" and the logo's color was filtered to resonate with the program. Why go through all that hassle if the plan was to align this part of the brand as seen with Disney Jr.

But then again this is Disney Channel, they have been out of touch with reality for sometime promoting shows that were taken off air. To make it worse, they'll continue promoting content as channel premieres days or weeks after it had been aired.

Info on the rebrand

The new visual language blends gradients and negative space to create depth and a sleek, modern feel, while the repetition of iconic Disney elements like the "D," Mickey ears, and script reinforces the brand in fresh, unexpected ways.

OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH is a feature-length documentary special that marks the first collaboration of its kind between Sir David Attenborough, the world’s preeminent natural historian, and National Geographic, a leader in exploration, science and storytelling. Presented by the celebrated 99-year-old broadcaster and produced by Silverback Films and Open Planet Studios, the film shares with a global audience the importance of the world’s oceans and the story of how we can, and must, restore the glory of Earth’s vast, interconnected waters. The film will premiere on National Geographic (DStv 181 and Startimes 220) across Africa on Friday 13 June at 20:30 (CAT) and will also be available on Disney+ in South Africa.

The film’s release on National Geographic is timed to World Oceans Day, June’s United Nations Ocean Conference 2025 in Nice, France, and midway through the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). As decision makers ponder the future of our oceans, OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH will amplify the marine protection solutions that can help turn the tide. The film draws upon extensive marine science and was supported by a team of scientific advisors, including National Geographic Pristine Seas founder, Dr. Enric Sala.

After filming the natural world for over 70 years, captivating generations of audiences worldwide with groundbreaking discoveries and advocating for environmental preservation, Attenborough delivers his most powerful message yet. In the feature-length special OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH, he draws on his lifetime of exploration and knowledge of the sea to take audiences on a cinematic journey of wonder through the planet’s most spectacular undersea habitats. Attenborough investigates astonishingly diverse marine ecosystems, from bustling giant kelp jungles and mesmerizing coral reefs to towering seamount outposts within the open ocean, all of which are revealed to be intricately connected, vital to avoiding climate catastrophe, and in peril due to destructive forms of fishing. While Attenborough exposes the greatest threats to our oceans’ health as never seen before, he points to inspirational stories from around the world to reveal the most remarkable finding of all: If we take action now, the opportunity for marine life to recover on an unprecedented scale is well within our reach.

Attenborough said, “My lifetime has coincided with the great age of ocean discovery. Over the last hundred years, scientists and explorers have revealed remarkable new species, epic migrations and dazzling, complex ecosystems beyond anything I could have imagined as a young man. In this film, we share those wonderful discoveries, uncover why our ocean is in such poor health, and, perhaps most importantly, show how it can bounce back to life.”

Tom McDonald, National Geographic’s executive vice president of Global Factual and Unscripted Content, said, “I’m thrilled that audiences worldwide will be able to engage with Sir David’s signature storytelling and the inspirational message of this film through the power of National Geographic’s global platforms. There is no one better to deliver this landmark film than Sir David and I’m delighted that he’s working with National Geographic for the very first time on a subject that is timely and close to his heart.”

Through compelling firsthand accounts and stunning, immersive cinematography, OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH tells the untold story of the importance and health of our ocean. Through spectacular undersea sequences and a reflection on Attenborough’s own lifetime of exploration and discovery, the film demonstrates the vital role the ocean plays in defending against climate disaster and sustaining all life on Earth. The documentary special zeroes in on the human actions leading to the oceans’ collapse and the effects of destructive fishing techniques, such as dredging and bottom trawling, on entire marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and the global climate. Breathtaking footage also exhibits the oceans’ incredible resilience and remarkable ability to recover when protected, showcasing the marine protection solutions already at hand and the action we must take to restore the abundance and vitality of the ocean and secure a healthier future for us all.

Educators can be part of the solution that inspires young people — the ocean stewards of tomorrow, by discussing OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH in the classroom. Later this year, National Geographic Pristine Seas will make the documentary film available to educators at schools, universities, museums, and libraries, and for educational and charitable conferences and events for non-commercial purposes.

OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH is directed by Toby Nowlan, Keith Scholey and Colin Butfield and produced by Nowlan for Silverback Films. The film is a Silverback Films and Open Planet Studios co-production. Executive producers include Louise Pedersen and Rachel Job for All3Media International (the film’s global TV distribution partner), Tom McDonald and Janet Han Vissering for National Geographic, Jasper Smith for Arksen Ltd and 10% for the Ocean, Minderoo Productions Limited, Enric Sala for National Geographic Society and Pristine Seas, Kristin Rechberger for Dynamic Planet and Revive Our Ocean, Rolly van Rappard and Francoise van Rappard for Don Quixote Foundation, and Olivier Wenden for The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

Has Cartoon Network Become Another Universal Kids?

With Google killing off the visibility for various websites I haven't been able to prioritize Insidus as seen in previous years. In my custody is several drafted or fully typed stories on MultiChoice, eMedia Investments and even some international brands we've covered in the last months.

As I've reported here back in 2024, it was announced that Warner Bros. Discovery would be spinning off its cable networks away from HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures into the division, Global Linear Business. Some inside sources hint at a potential split from Warner Bros. Discovery in a not so distant future.

Cable companies are losing revenue from Cartoon Network, TLC and HGTV all of which are packaged on DStv. This has led some channels to close in a number of countries or as we've seen with others a zombified lineup.

In a story published on Bloomberg, ad revenue from Cartoon Network plummeted from $668.3 million in 2014 to $133.7 million in 2024. This is the reason Warner Bros. Discovery hasn't prioritised it's original content slate and minimised it's portfolio opting to focus more on adult programming.

Even Adult Swim which serves as a side label to Cartoon Network for its mature offering is also seeing a dip in revenue and some do question the viability of the network.

When Comcast opted to spinoff it's cable networks under the handle Versant it led to the closure of Universal Kids. Very much like Cartoon Network, Universal Kids had garnered scale in other parts of the world with its equivalent DreamWorks Channel and this is where Cartoon Network might reside.

DreamWorks Channel despite being a success story serves an import to DreamWorks Animation's programming picked up by Netflix and Apple TV+. With Warner Bros. Discovery exploring a potential split shows like Teen Titans GO! are likely to follow the same route.

Upcoming shows like Regular Show: Lost Tapes and Adventure Time: Side Quests may take much longer to be made available on Cartoon Network if not prioritized as much.

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to split it's cable business from studios and streaming and if one had to guess it will be similar to Comcast. Warner Bros. Discovery will want to align it with HBO Max and Cartoon Network very much like Universal Kids is the weakest link.a

CANCELLED!!! Cartoonito USA Is Reportedly Shutting Down On Cartoon Network

In not so shocking news, it appears that Cartoon Network will be booting off Cartoonito from their schedule in the coming weeks. As several viewers had spotted a batch of Looney Tunes shows like New Looney Tunes and Tiny Toons Looniversity airing at 8AM to 9AM.

As Cartoonito continued to garner traction in other parts of the world leading to the launch of a 24 hour network. In the US, Cartoonito had been struggling to find an audience what initially started out as a 4-6 hour block on Cartoon Network had been reduced to an hour and a half.

Warner Bros. Discovery had commissioned several original shows at the time with Tom And Jerry Time and Little Ellen that got booted off, and Bugs Bunny Builders cancelled. The only show that had seen traction on the brand was Batwheels which got renewed for a third season.

While some will cite low viewership in its demise as Cartoonito was rolled out in the US as later as the former Universal Kids. Warner Bros. Discovery is technically insolvent leaving little to no new content for Cartoon Network (aka Zombie TV) so in a way it was probably for the best.

The fact that Cartoonito is dying down doesn't mean that Warner Bros. Discovery is done with preschool just yet as they still have Batwheels. Besides that, Hey BMO and Foster's Funtimes have been greenlight so if anyone had to guess this will form part of Cartoon Network's lineup.

Internationally, Cartoonito will sit put but what might happen is that the brand will rely solely on imports to stay afloat. Not that's it's new or anything, Cartoon Network has been reliant on that in other parts of the world same with Boomerang before it's switch to Cartoonito.

Warner Bros. Discovery is prepping to spinoff its cable networks and I can only assume Cartoon Network (very much like HBO) will be aligned to Streaming & Studios in the US. If Batwheels forms part of its regular lineup it gives the show a chance to get more exposed.

Warner Bros. Discovery Looking To Spin-Off It's Cable Networks Ahead Of Restructure

Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) is moving towards a potential break-up, CNBC reported on Thursday, as media companies explore options for their struggling cable TV businesses and sharpen focus on their faster-growing streaming and studios divisions.

WBD shares surged more than 4% on the news, rebounding from earlier losses of nearly 6% that were triggered by a dour quarterly report.

The company missed first-quarter revenue estimates and posted a larger-than-expected loss earlier in the day due to a sluggish box office performance and ongoing declines in cable.

The media industry is going through what some executives have called a “general disruption” as millions of subscribers abandon once-lucrative cable TV for streaming. That has piled pressure on companies to consistently produce hit studio content and boost profitability in their streaming businesses.

WBD had laid the groundwork for a possible sale or spin-off of its declining cable TV assets in December by announcing a separation from its streaming and studio operations. It reported results under the new structure for the first time on Thursday.

A split will align the company with Comcast, which is spinning off most of its cable TV networks such as MSNBC and CNBC to position itself for growth in the streaming era.

Analysts have long speculated about a break-up of WBD, formed by the 2022 merger between Warner Media and Discovery.

“WBD would be leaner and have stronger growth potential without cable assets. But finding a buyer could be difficult. Linear TV is deteriorating and WBD has big debts,” said eMarketer analyst Ross Benes.

WBD, which has $38bn (R693.4bn) of gross debt, did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on the CNBC report.

Its CEO David Zaslav said on Thursday the company's programming strength was helping Max attract subscribers in a crowded market for streaming services.

WBD added 5.3-million streaming subscribers in the January to March quarter, more than the 3.1-million estimated by analysts, taking its total to 122.3-million. Its content slate in the period included the third season of HBO's The White Lotus and the medical drama series The Pitt.

However, its results were hampered by a weak showing at the box office as WBD struggled to replicate the success of last year's Dune: Part Two, which grossed more than $700m (R12,7-trillion). Its marquee release for the period, Bong Joon Ho's sci-fi dark comedy Mickey 17, earned only slightly more than its reported budget at the box office.

Studio revenue fell 18% to $2.3bn, missing estimates of $2.7bn, according to Visible Alpha.

The company has, however, made a strong start to the second quarter with Ryan Coogler's horror film Sinners and the blockbuster A Minecraft Movie, which has raked in around $900 million globally, making it the biggest release of 2025 so far.

Revenue at the TV networks segment, which includes CNN, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, fell 7%.

Overall, revenue fell 10% to $8.98bn, missing analysts' average estimate of $9.60bn, according to data compiled by LSEG. Loss of 18c per share was also larger than expectations for a 13c loss.

SABC Looking To Curate Exclusive Content For SABC+

SABC+ is a South African based streaming service that served as a promotional window to the current SABC 1-3 alongside it's 19 radio stations. Since it's inception, the streamer has only managed to accumulate 850,000 registered users on the platform.

At the time, the SABC had remained hesitant in bulking up its offering for the streamer as it's cable networks continue to lose revenue. According to recent reports, the plan is to make SABC+ a flagship platform going forward which could hint at a major restructuring for its cable networks.

When MultiChoice unveiled Showmax 2.0 in partnership with Comcast this led to the consolidation/axing of Me and 1Magic. Even eMedia Investments made some adjustments to its linear platform with eExtra's Kuiertyd that had become the dumping ground for eVOD.

With SABC 2 and 3 continuing to run at a loss estimated guess is that SABC will try to minimise or scrap further commissions from these platforms in favour of SABC+. These channels will likely turn to archived material and third party programming while optimising for the streamer.

"We are seeking partnerships with organisations that traditionally would be viewed as competition for the SABC. This includes MultiChoice; also streaming services like VIU, Netflix and all the rest."

On the streaming front, it appears SABC is on a rationality process as they're hoping to ink deals with Netflix and MultiChoice for programming. When Netflix launched in the market it become another DStv in general a shark hovering around smaller fish.

Warner's head at Max had a long talk with corporate about the performance of the streamer and it was agreed that Max (small fish) will never the reach of Netflix. If there's anyone who has better luck to compete it's Disney+, SABC+ very much like Max is fighting for stability.

Last year, Max dumped most of Cartoon Network's library of content as these weren't core to their viewers so it's likely SABC+ will adapt to a similar trait when commissioning content. Prioritizing IPs in an attempt to boost consumer growth at SABC+ while other content that goes unnoticed on the platform will garner traction on Netflix.

Canal+'s MultiChoice Ongoing Battle With Regulators

As noted, Canal+ had been looking to acquire MultiChoice with the deal that was expected to close in April 2025 now aiming for October 2025. The deal currently being scrutinized by regulators is regarded as a larger merger with MultiChoice valued at over R50 billion it would make sense why they couldn't cross their initial deadline.

MultiChoice filed this transaction with regulators by 30 September 2024 and the Competition Commission usually takes about 40 business days but for larger mergers they can extend from 6 months to 12 months with this deal already past 7 months presuming regulators wanted more info about the deal.

Compared to previous larger mergers (e.g. Walmart and Massmart), the MultiChoice deal is the most complex due I mean most others would have this done within 6 months (excluding consultations with the Tribunal). This is due to the ECA which limits decision making to 20% and Canal+ addressed that with LicenceCo.

Others hurdles would have to be the effects this transaction has on competitors (like eMedia Investments) and the economy. MultiChoice has been a dominant force (via SuperSport) but as we've seen in recent years Netflix is starting to catch-up as they've licensed WWE for a number of countries.

If MultiChoice wants to continue outshining Netflix they have to assure this deal gets greenlight between now to early July if they want to meet the October deadline. The tribunal will need 3 months at least if approved to hold public hearings and set the ground work.

Major delays to October would have to be the Competition Commission's recommendation to block the deal or a minority shareholder (like Alan Gray) wanting more money. But if I'm being honest the deal has a moderate to high rate of getting to Scenario A than B.

Scenario A

MultiChoice is in financial distress and serves a responsibility in growing the local landscape. Regulators could greenlight this deal as a means to keep these operations around for the foreseeable future although Netflix is a dominant foe it can't replicate SABC News much less DStv Diski.

If Canal+ is able to swallow up MultiChoice as there's a moderate to high chance of the deal being greenlight by regulators mainly because of the company's financial position. Although, Netflix already curates content within the market it's not to the scale of SuperSport much less SABC News.

Expect this deal to come with numerous clauses the first I presume would be local quotas even for LicenceCo. Canal+ could be told that 40-60% of its earnings must be used to fund the local landscape and with a 20% cap they'll likely want a detailed report on their activities.

Another which I don't think would be the case is a divestiture of core brands maybe Canal+ could sell a stake in SuperSport which I doubt even DStv. Canal+ is more likely look to offload assets such as Namola and Aura as they generate very little revenue for MultiChoice.

Scenario B

Regulators have been known to block deals in the past with Vodacom and Maziv deal that had remained ongoing since 2022. On the MultiChoice's stance, the issue would stem from its dominance within the TV spectrum particularly sports, a deal like this would further isolate competitors.

Another may have to do with economic factors, regulators may fear that this ordeal will lead to jobs cuts or loss of local content. Although Canal+ doesn't have an existing foothold, MultiChoice has been loss making and the acquiring company always looks to reduce operational expenses.

Lastly the structure, MultiChoice plans to curve out it's broadcasting license into a separate entity to ensure its compliant with legislation. Regulators may not be convinced that MultiChoice will comply with that 20% cap as the loophole to this would be MultiChoice Africa.

E! Entertainment, CNBC And Various Other Channels From NBCUniversal To Fold Under New Company Called Versant

The spinoff of Comcast‘s cable networks has a name: Versant.

Mark Lazarus, who will lead the new unit, wrote in a memo to staffers, “Versant represents more than a name – it speaks to our adaptability and embraces the opportunity to shape a new, modern media company. There were many considerations for a suitable name. Our internal team of incredibly skilled and experienced brand marketers, designers and media tacticians took into account our overarching goal to influence culture, connect communities and signify a unified direction forward.”

Since the spinoff of MSNBC, CNBC and other cable networks was announced last year, the entity has gone by SpinCo.

Lazarus added, “We would be foolish to expect everyone to love the name of our new company immediately. There were certainly some others that we could have gotten behind, but after sitting with Versant for a couple of weeks now, I believe it will suit us well, evoke a sense of energy, and underscore our role in driving progress.”

Lazarus also said that the company headquarters would be in Manhattan.

Other networks included in the spinoff, expected to be completed later this year, are USA Network, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and Golf Channel.

With NBC News no longer a sister network, MSNBC has been building up a news division. Yet to be announced is how the network plans to approach streaming. MSNBC shows had appeared on Peacock, but that platform will remain in the Comcast fold.

The choice of a media company name invites quick reaction and judgment, especially in an era when so many entities choose uncommon words, like Axios and Semafor, or a partial anagram, like Tegna, from its spinoff from Gannett. Some names have been outright duds, most prominently Tronc, the name given to Tribune Publishing in 2016 only to be dropped two years later.

According an audio announcement from brand marketers Lisa Fleming and Mike DeRienzo, thousands of names were considered, but only 43 passed “preliminary knockout.” Of that, 25 were cleared domestically. That was narrowed to 12 finalists that were presented to the leadership team.

The field of options continued to narrow, with a top three selected to go through international clearance. All three did.

They then went into “design exploration,” including logos. “After months of presentations and conversations, a clear winner rose to the top, and that was Versant,” DeRienzo said. Versant actually is a real word, meaning the slope of a mountain. “It says strength, forward movement,” he said.

By contrast, MSNBC will retain its name, even though NBC will no longer be part of the network. The “MS” stood for Microsoft, as the network initially was joint venture with Microsoft. The tech giant sold its stake in 2005.

MultiChoice Will Be Removing Qwest TV From The DStv Platform From 14 May, No Word On Showmax

After MultiChoice opted to boot off the underperforming pop centred MTV Hits from Paramount Global in favour of Qwest TV from multi award-winning artist Quincy Jones. It is revealed through an electronic guide that Qwest TV will stop being distributed on DStv from 14th May.

This will be the second TV channel within the year following the closure of 1Max in March. It also joins a list of channels the pay-tv broadcaster failed to accommodate as they undergo a possible takeover by Canal+.

Qwest TV was a jazz infused music channel home to musical icons such as Erykah Badu, Questlove, Salif Keita, Gregory Porter and Fatoumata Diawara. They hosted exclusive concerts and documentaries, and similar to 1Max was also made available to stream on Showmax.

MultiChoice doesn't state why Qwest TV is being removed from DStv after 2 years or whether like 1Max the latter will continue on Showmax. But the usual "it forms parts of ongoing efforts to refresh our local content line-up and optimise the suite of channels on offer".

Best guess would be low viewership as Qwest TV was added as a replacement to MTV Hits both of which were Compact+ (and by default that's Premium). Another reason may have to do with revamping of Showmax or MultiChoice's financial position.

Since last year, MultiChoice has been technically insolvent which led to the closure of numerous channels and sale of NMIS Insurance Services.

Although Qwest TV goes dark on the DStv platform in the coming weeks, MultiChoice does however offer an alternative lineup. For Qwest TV viewers this would be Trace Gospel and Dumisa with the latter ranging from funk, soul and jazz on DMX.
