Despite an 11% decline in June’s movie market ratings, TNT, the home of Hollywood blockbusters, ranked #1 ahead of all movie channels in South Africa. Regardless of the overall decreasing trend, TNT saw a notable 22% increase in viewership during weekend daytime programming driven by the two best-performing movies on the channel for the month, Karate Kid and 3 Ninjas.
TNT dominated the Top 50 competitive movies in June, securing 15 titles in the Top 50 with films such as Panic Room, Anaconda and The Mask. The channel also garnered historical viewership numbers in May for the premiere of Apocalypto, directed by Mel Gibson, reaching 1 million viewers.
TNT recently launched its long-form slate of TNT Original Movies, which kicked off with Escape from Pretoria on the 4th of July during prime time. The movie, starring Daniel Radcliffe, gathered close to 389 000 viewers, a 75% increase on the same timeslot month on month, and ranked #1 competitively during the airing. The TNT Original Movie content, representing a wide range of mainstream entertainment genres, featuring renowned international casts, offers a brand-new, exclusive original movie premiere the first Saturday of every month.
Historically a male-skewed channel, TNT has seen a growing appeal to women with 51% tuning in versus 49% of male viewers and strong appeal amongst the 15 to 49-year-old segment (which accounts for 60% of the total audience).
In September, TNT will unleash an action-driven, pulse-raising slate, specially tailored for African fans, with blockbusters such as The Transporter (1 & 2), a whole stunt dedicated to the best titles of Denzel Washington (Remember the Titans, Déjà vu, Fallen) and thrilling action movie premieres such as I, Robot; and Hitman: Agent 47.
