Is The Cat Really Out Of The Bag For MultiChoice And Warner Bros. Discovery??? As The Channels Remain On Canal+ Afrique In A Separate Agreement

MultiChoice has sent notice to various informing them that Warner Bros. Discovery's slate of channels would be exiting DStv by the of December. This comes after Paramount announced plans to shutter CBS Justice, CBS Reality, BET and MTV Base on the platform. 

Warner Bros. Discovery currently has the largest linear portfolio with MultiChoice being 12 channels as opposed to Disney and Paramount who offer 5 to 6 channels. These includes brands Discovery Channel, TLC, HGTV, Cartoon Network and CNN.

There's a strong possibility that Canal+ following its takeover of MultiChoice will likely to reduce the offering. As it understood, MultiChoice is bleeding subscribers or in general losing money and Canal+ is trying to put out these flames.

MultiChoice's previous owners were more likely to retain these 12 channels compared to the French broadcaster. When they mentioned potentially replacing these channels it could imply doing away with Bobby Flay and Fixer Home Fabulous.

MultiChoice's French African equivalent Canal+ Afrique distribute Warner Bros. Discovery's cable networks in a separate agreement. Large number of premium channels are excluded from their offering including TLC, HGTV and Food Network.

Through M7 Group, it's European equivalent offers HBO, Discovery Historia, Discovery Life, Cartoon Network and Cartoonito through Canal+ Polska. Channels to be excluded can also range from Discovery Channel and Investigation Discovery.

In the event that both parties come to an agreement it's likely that Discovery Channel, TLC, Cartoon Network and CNN will continue on the platform. But to save up on costs, Canal+ may look to remove channels which are deemed non viable or repetitive.

Check our previous story: this could as well range from HGTV, Food Network or Real Time. Another could as well be that Discovery Family, Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel get the axe while Real Time is all that's left of the flock.

MultiChoice may notify consumers of channel terminations but this isn't their first rodeo as a similar situation occured with Lifetime, History and C+I before the company opted to remove only C+I. Even Bloomberg had its feed cut off before getting reinstated.

Channels That Are Likely Safe Or Canned Within MultiChoice's Channel Negotiation Agreement With Warner Bros. Discovery

MultiChoice is set to lose 4 channels by the end of December which include BET, MTV Base, CBS Reality and CBS Justice. There's a chance that more channels could join the list as it's embroiled in a carriage dispute with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Warner Bros. Discovery operates 12 channels on the DStv platform which is the most for any provider in contract with MultiChoice. This includes Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, TNT, CNN, Discovery Channel, TLC, Discovery Family, Real Time, HGTV, Travel Channel, Investigation Discovery and Food Network.

Unless a new agreement is put in place, DStv consumers would start the year with 16 less channels. Here's the thing, MultiChoice likely through its the parent company Canal+ is open to replacing them.

As mentioned, this isn't the first time MultiChoice had been involved in such matters but it is under Canal+. If they're bullish on the matter, then expect for consumers to lose access to Teen Titans GO! and Guy's Grocery Games.

From the looks of things, it appears as if Warner Bros. Discovery is open to retaining these channels or at least a few of them as they mention wanting to reach an agreement that benefits both parties.

Below is channels I believe safe, mild, at risk or likely to get the axe

Discovery Channel - Safe

Discovery Channel is a male oriented factual entertainment brand offering educational and wildlife content alongside other content. These include shows like Dirty Jobs, Gold Rush, Deadliest Catch and Mythbusters.

TLC - Safe

TLC is a female tailored brand offering content ranging from medical, lifestyle to reality basically rivalling with NBCUniversal's Bravo. It includes shows like 90 Day Fiance, Sister Wives, Dr. Pimple Popper and My 600LB Life.

Cartoon Network - Safe

Cartoon Network is a children's channel offering animation ranging from comedy, adventure and action for children's aged 6-12. It is home to shows like Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls, Craig Of The Creek and Teen Titans GO!.

CNN International - Safe

CNN International is a 24 hour channel offering news related programming and aimed at overseas territories similar to BBC News and Aljazeera. They offer news coverage in the world of sports, technology, science and politics.

Investigation Discovery - Mild

Investigation Discovery is a factual based channel offering content that ranges from paranormal, crime and investigative journalism. It includes shows like Death By Fame, Evil Lives Here and Murder Under Friday Night Lights.

Cartoonito - Mild

Cartoonito is a preschool channel offering content for viewers aged 2-5 years with a mixture of comedy and education. These include shows like Cocomelon, Thomas And Friends: All Engines Go!, Mr. Bean and Batwheels.

TNT - At Risk

TNT is a male oriented and family inclusive movie channel offering films ranging from action, adventure, sci-fi and horror. Since it's inception, TNT has been ranked as the #1 movie channel within the market and aside from films offers content from wrestling promotion, All Elite Wrestling. 

Real Time - At Risk 

Real Time is a lifestyle oriented brand offering shows ranging from home and decor, foodies, wildlife and investigation. It offers programming from Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Food Network and HGTV.

HGTV - At Risk

HGTV as the name implies is a home and gardening channel offering reality programming related to home improvement and real estate. It includes shows like Ugliest House In America, My Lottery Dream Home and Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge.

Discovery Family - Axe

Discovery Family is viewed as family based channel offering content ranging from wildlife, science, technology and automobiles. Most of its programming comes from Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.

Travel Channel - Axe

Travel Channel is regarded a tourist destination for travel and leisure with its own themed content and part of the time it dwells on the supernatural. This includes shows like House Hunters International, Building Alaska and Destination Bigfoot.

Food Network - Axe

Food Network is a cable network that offers programming about food and cooking. It features shows like Holiday Baking Championship, Guy's Grocery Games, Beat Bobby Flay and Chopped.

Could MultiChoice Risk Losing More DStv Channels Ahead Of Paramount Africa's Exit In The Market?

As reported, MultiChoice is set to lose four channels by the end of 2025 including CBS Reality, CBS Justice, BET and MTV Base. This forms part of a corporate restructure at Paramount that will see the closure of several international channels.

In an email sent to various DStv consumers not long ago, MultiChoice has now warned it's subscribers that they could be losing an additional 12 channels by the end of 2025. For sometime, they've been embroiled in a carriage dispute with Warner Bros. Discovery and no agreement is in place.

This means Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, CNN, TNT, Discovery Channel, TLC, Discovery Family, Real Time, Investigation Discovery, Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel could be going dark on DStv and GOtv by 1st January 2026.

MultiChoice has been involved in multiple carriage disputes in the past there was one with A+E Global Media for History, Lifetime and C+I. Followed by eMedia Investments who provide eToonz, eExtra, eMovies and eMovies Extra which dragged on for 2 and half years.

It's currently unclear what led to this but from what I understand Warner Bros. Discovery will be closing off Cartoon Network in New Zealand and possibly Italy. It had been alleged that Warner Bros. Discovery wants more money and MultiChoice refused.

Again nothing is confirmed here but its also been alleged MultiChoice which is now owned by Canal+ wants to pay less for these channels. A few months ago, they decided to reduce payments to various suppliers and contractors by 20%.

But if you had to look at past disputes particularly the one with A+E Global Media there's a strong chance that CBS Justice, CBS Reality, BET and MTV Base won't be the only ones leaving DStv.

While it's too soon to speculate, MultiChoice does mention wanting to provide the best entertainment experience at the best possible pricing. To me this seems like an indicator that the company could be looking to shed costs or minimise rates.

If there are channels expected to leave DStv soon which I believe might be the case I'd imagine niche brands like Travel Channel would be axed. Followed by TNT as MultiChoice already boasts a diverse lineup of films through M-Net Movies, Movie Room and KIX.

Through an enquiry, MultiChoice had said to DStv subscribers that it is ready to replace Warner Bros. Discovery's TV channels with alternatives. But it's unlikely that all channels would be replaced some like TNT already come with those alternatives.

Cartoon Network, TNT Africa And 12 More Channels Could Be Exiting DStv As MultiChoice And Warner Bros. Discovery Enter A Carriage Dispute

DStv parent MultiChoice Group on Monday sent a warning to its subscribers: that 12 Warner Bros Discovery-owned channels could be removed from all DStv bouquets in the coming weeks should the two parties fail to reach a new distribution agreement.

In a letter, which was sent as an on-screen pop up and e-mail to DStv customers, MultiChoice said it will continue to strive to give customers an “exceptional entertainment package”, whether a new deal is struck or not.

“The distribution agreement between MultiChoice and Warner Bros Discovery is scheduled to end on 31 December 2025. While discussions between the parties continue, no agreement has been reached at this stage. If this remains unchanged, a number of Warner Bros Discovery channels may no longer be available on DStv from 1 January 2026,” MultiChoice said in a letter to subscribers on Monday.

MultiChoice hinted at a possible refreshed channel line-up in 2026: it said it is “preparing to further strengthen and enrich its line-up with new content, channels and services” in the new year.

The changes will affect all DStv customers across Africa; customers of sister company Showmax will not be affected should the Warner Bros content be removed from DStv.

Subscriber losses

The news comes as MultiChoice parent company, French pay-TV giant Groupe Canal+, stated its commitment to stemming the subscriber decline at MultiChoice. In a presentation to investors, Canal+ revealed that a 1.2 million year-over-year loss in subscribers to the year-ended 31 March had accelerated to 1.4 million year on year by end-June. Canal+ said it will leverage cost optimisation to reset the cost base across its African operations while taking advantage of groupwide technology “synergies” to drive costs down even further.

“What matters most is ensuring that your viewing experience remains rich, diverse and enjoyable. You will continue to enjoy an exceptional entertainment experience across your package, supported by strong alternative channels across every genre,” MultiChoice told customers about the Warner Bros Discovery talks.

TLC Goes Free-To-Air In The UK As HGTV Closes It's Linear Operations

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) UK & Ireland has today announced plans to launch a new-look TLC in the UK & Ireland. 

 

From January 2026, TLC will become a free-to-air (FTA) entertainment channel in the UK and will bring viewers a bumper line-up of scripted content including multi award-winning The Big Bang Theory and spin-offs Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, plus Mike & Molly. 

 

This new content represents WBD’s biggest order of scripted entertainment across their FTA linear portfolio in the UK and will be combined with a host of new unscripted series, signalling WBD’s ongoing commitment and investment in its linear portfolio in market.

 

New unscripted series coming to TLC in 2026 will include a new-look Mock the Week, the UK’s much-loved topical, satirical celebrity panel show, produced by Angst, and Zero Stars, produced by CPL and based on an original Danish format from Liquidminds and distributed by Primitives, which sees comedians and BFFs Roisin Conaty and Sara Pascoe journey across the globe, experiencing places with only the funniest and worst reviews in search of a truly unique travel experience. 

 

Fans of TLC will still have access to their favourites including Dr Pimple Popper and My 600Lb Life, the channel will also be home to the hugely popular 90 Day Fiancé franchise, including the UK spin-off. 

 

In addition to a new-look TLC, from January 2026 WBD’s FTA channel Really will see an injection of HGTV shows, including Celebrity IOU with the Property Brothers, Home Town and My Lottery Dream Home. This makes it even simpler for viewers to enjoy the best of lifestyle, property, home and garden content in one place, with the HGTV channel sunsetting in the UK & Ireland. HGTV content will also continue to be available via discovery+. 

 

With the planned changes from January 2026, WBD’s UK FTA portfolio will consist of six channels with Quest, Quest Red, Food Network and DMAX, alongside TLC and Really – bringing viewers their favourite genres and shows across antiques and restoration, true crime, food, reality, comedy, home, motoring and much more. This FTA line-up is combined with a host of Pay-TV channels in the UK - including the Discovery Channel, Cartoon Network and TNT Sports - totalling more than 20 linear channels and giving WBD the position of #5 Commercial Broadcaster in the UK. 

 

As well as the new content confirmed across TLC and Really, viewers can also look forward to a brand-new series coming to Quest in mid-2026 with Francis Bourgeois & Chris Harris: We Saved a Train (w/t). The 8x60 series from Naked West, a Fremantle label, follows friends and engineering obsessives Francis Bourgeois and Chris Harris as they take on the challenge of restoring a dilapidated diesel locomotive and bringing it back to life. Francis, a mechanical engineer and passionate train enthusiast, and Chris, famed for his love of speed, precision, and no-nonsense engineering, make the perfect duo. Together, they combine expertise, humour, and genuine passion as they navigate the highs and lows of turning a rusting relic into a fully working locomotive. 

 

Also coming to Quest in 2026 is the recently announced Ricochet-produced Guz Khan’s Custom Cars (w/t) which sees the comedian testing a new role as a car modder, and a bumper new order of the Auction House franchise, with Angus Ashworth returning for a seventh series of Yorkshire Auction House (18x60), a sixth series of Celebrity Yorkshire Auction House (6x60) and third season of the Derbyshire Auction House (12x60) with Irita Marriott - all produced by STVStudios Factual. Henry Cole and Fuzz Townshend will also be back at the wheel for an eighth series of Quest’s Shed & Buried (20x30), a fourth series of Shed & Buried: Classic Cars (10x60) and a new format Shed & Buried: Classic Bikes (6x60), all produced by HCA Entertainment. 

 

Food fans can also look forward to a brand-new series from Adam Richman next year. Following the success of Adam Richman Eats Britain and Adam Richman Eats Football, the globally renowned super-foodie is back, this time journeying to the Mediterranean in Adam Richman Eats Italy, a 10x30 series produced by Raise The Roof Productions for Food Network.

Clarification About TLC Africa And TLC South Africa (Formerly Discovery TLC) On DStv

TLC is a female skewed entertainment channel operated by Warner Bros. Discovery that offers a mixture of factual and lifestyle programming. It grew to become the leading destination for newlyweds with shows like 90 Day Fiance and Say Yes To The Dress alongside other shows like Body Parts and Monster Inside Me.

For sometime, TLC has become one of the few TV channels on DStv alongside Nickelodeon to distribute localised feeds in Africa. Since last year, MultiChoice had picked up and launched TLC Africa for its consumers in Southern Africa (excluding South Africa) on channel 125.

Currently seen in the West and Eastern parts of Africa, TLC Africa was a lightweight version to TLC South Africa often featuring older shows from the channel. Unlike TLC South Africa, the channel has had resorted to censorship by even isolating shows like I Am Jazz as the lead is transgender.

Last week, a DStv consumer in South Africa had noticed that TLC Africa is not seen on channel 125 and with Southern African consumers sharing a transponder can see the frequencies of the mentioned channels. Since then, a notice was sent to the relevant team and we had finally gotten feedback.

This DStv subscriber had asked whether TLC Africa was removed from channel 125 or merged with channel 135 and the answer was as follows:

TLC Africa and TLC South Africa have not merged. Viewers will now only see the TLC channel feed available to their region—so South African audiences should only access the localised TLC feed on channel 135, and audiences across the rest of Africa will only have access to TLC Africa on channel 125

To dive deeper into this, the sudden disappearance of TLC Africa on channel 125 in South Africa was a MultiChoice thing as they can configure with the settings of their decoders. One example would be SuperSport while South Africa groups them on channels 200-220 these regions group them by 220-240.

Another question was pertaining to Discovery TLC now being referred to as TLC South Africa:

The channel formerly listed as “Discovery TLC” on DStv channel 135 has been updated to reflect its correct brand name, TLC South Africa, aligning with how we refer to it across our PR and marketing platforms.

Why Was TLC Moved From Channel 135 To Channel 125 On DStv?

Last month, it was reported MultiChoice had silently moved TLC from channel 135 to 125 or rather acquired the feed for viewers in the West and Eastern parts of Africa and expanded it to Southern Africa. Similar to the likes of M-Net and Nickelodeon, these endeavours had led these brands to become independent in South Africa.

These days MultiChoice tends to identify these international operations with the tag "Africa". Likely due to the fact that corporate tends to list their foreign business as MultiChoice Africa so this is likely where Paramount Global, M-Net and Warner Bros. Discovery got the names for Nickelodeon Africa, M-Net Africa and TLC Africa.

What's more odd is the variation of graphic designs between Nickelodeon Africa and Nickelodeon South Africa.

As reported sometime ago, MultiChoice and Warner Bros. Discovery gave very little publicity about the switch within Southern Africa causing confusion amongst viewers. Some were wondering why TLC channel 135 had been blocked (and if MultiChoice was looking to close yet another channel) while others why the content on channel 125 is lagging behind.

Through an enquiry with Warner Bros. Discovery this was their response:

As part of MultiChoice’s ongoing efforts to enhance their customers’ television viewing experience and delight them with content that resonates with them, MultiChoice refreshed its TLC channel for DStv on 15 August 2024 from channel 135 to channel 125.

TLC strives to create diverse and inclusive programming that resonates with a wide audience. However, we also respect the cultural and legal norms of each country where our shows are broadcast. Unfortunately, there are instances where certain themes may be restricted due to local regulations and therefore influence the programming in your country. The channel lineup will be adjusted to align with regional preferences. Some shows may be exclusive to a particular region. We apologise for any inconvenience and hope viewers continue to enjoy our other content.

Development Alert: TLC Africa Expands To Southern Africa On Channel 125 (Excluding South Africa)

During the day, DStv consumers had spotted the TLC Africa channel on 125 through the electronic programme guide. For those wondering, this isn't a channel MultiChoice is planning to add in South Africa as TLC already exists on channel 135 but like Nickelodeon Africa on 312.

The same channel with slight variations for different countries for starters Dr. Pimple Popper while the one situated in South Africa will air at 19:00, the one in neighboring countries will be telecast an hour early at 18:00 based on timezones and by that time we'd be watching My 600lb Life. 

Another variation may pertain to certain show I Am Jazz which would feature a transgender media mogul. In South Africa and Mozambique for starters, there is no restriction on sexual preferences as seen in Nigeria and Kenya making the series accessible to those countries. 

Unlike Nickelodeon and a few other channels on DStv, TLC's feed for neighboring countries is kind of depressing while several other channels are in tune with premieres some of TLC Africa's premieres can date back to the 2010s as seen with Discovery Family and Real Time.

The only sin the feed on channel 135 committed is promoting Me Or The Menu and Fixer Upper as premieres as those shows are already viewable on Food Network and HGTV. And also Discovery had already curated two channels specifically to leverage from these brands. 

Now consumers in more countries namely Southern African regions like Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi will now have to burden themselves with decade old repeats while consumers in Southern Africa get the fresher outtakes as seen in some parts of Europe. 

This would led to them losing out on channel 135.
