"I hope to inspire others, especially young girls from underrepresented communities, to connect with the ocean and become advocates for its protection."

 

In 6000-LB. Shark, premiering on Saturday, 20 July at 18:10 CAT, Leigh de Necker, Marine Biologist, teams up with Tom "The Blowfish" Hird to track down massive Great White Sharks off the coast of New Zealand, using cutting-edge science to weigh them and analyse their diet.

"Filming 6,000-LB Shark for Discovery Shark Week 2024 in New Zealand was truly one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life," says Leigh. "To witness these magnificent creatures in their element, surrounded by five, six, even seven at a time, was awe-inspiring. These weren't just any sharks; we're talking chunky animals between 3.5 and 5.5 meters in size! My marine biologist brain was in overdrive! Why were there so many sharks? Why were some so large? What were they feeding on? Could any be our South African sharks? This experience has deepened my fascination with these incredible creatures and fuelled my passion for their conservation."

 

Witness groundbreaking research in Great White Danger Zone on Monday, 15 July, at 17:15 CAT, as Dr Alison Towner, Shark Scientist, and her team investigate a new Great White hotspot off the South African coast, uncovering unusual behaviours in these apex predators.

"Southern African white sharks are currently a subject of intense mystery. Human activities and killer whale predation have drastically shifted their habitat use in this region. Great White Danger Zone investigates how white sharks are adapting to these changes at the southern tip of Africa,” commented Dr Alison. “It also provided an opportunity for me to collaborate again with Dr Oliver Jewell from the University of Western Australia, with whom I spent over 800 hours tracking white sharks around Gansbaai, in the Western Cape, in the decade before these ecological shifts occurred. This work underscores the urgent need for resources to support white shark research in this region, as these displacements redefine our global understanding of coastal ecosystems, particularly when apex predators vanish."

In 1991, South Africa became the first country to protect great white sharks. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Shark Spotters are a pioneering organisation dedicated to shark conservation, research, and education in South Africa. Their innovative and sustainable approach to reducing human-shark conflict has gained global attention and evolved to uncover key insights into the movements and behaviour of white sharks alongside researchers, including Dr Alison Towner.

An infamous off-grid community that went viral on social media for disturbing allegations is now the subject of a six-part limited series, THE GARDEN: COMMUNE OR CULT, arriving on Wednesday, 22 November at 20:00 CAT on Discovery Channel.

 

On 22 acres of backcountry land in the American South lies The Garden – a community that lives by its own laws, free from the pressures of modern society. They maintain an open-door policy to anyone seeking to join their ranks, but new people must submit to an initiation period. Some barely last a week, others are forced to leave, and a chosen few will call The Garden home for good. Questions continue to arise about the cult-like vibes of the controversial community, but this spring is different. Cameras have been granted unprecedented access to The Garden, documenting its spread to new locations deep in the Ozarks.

 

Founded as a cooperative, ‘leaderless’ community, The Garden could be viewed as a post-apocalyptic wonderland free of societal rules. However, when potential members arrive, they quickly realize there’s more than meets the eye. New initiates include Tyler, a veteran and self-described doomsday prepper; Tisheila, a truck driver survivalist; ‘Oak’, who wants to toughen up after years behind a desk; and Jessica, a former cheerleader looking to reconnect with nature. 

These newcomers have ten days to prove to The Garden that they have what it takes to be part of the community. Did they join a commune working towards a sustainable, off-grid way of life? Or have they just surrounded themselves with members of a mind-controlling cult?

Development Alert: StarTimes To Add Discovery Channel As A New Channel On The Platform, TLC And Investigation Discovery Relaunch On The Platform

After TNT was ripped away from StarTimes and StarSat customers across Africa in September, Warner Bros. Discovery and the pay-tv operator seem to a struck a new deal which would reinstate Investigation Discovery and also lead the additions of Discovery Channel and TLC.

Taking to account only Discovery Channel is the new addition while the latter Investigation Discovery and TLC had already been on the platform.

Discovery Channel is considered the male counterpart of TLC which pivots towards motors, speculative investigation and even wildlife. It features shows like Deadliest Catch, Shark Week, Naked And Afraid, Gold Rush, Mythbusters and Wheeler Dealers.

This is not only the male counterpart of TLC but the premium outtake of Discovery Family. Consumers are getting back the shows that were ripped away from them in 2021.

Investigation Discovery (ID) is a factual entertainment channel comprises of Hollywood crimes, murder and forensic investigation. It features shows like Evil Lives Here, Til Death Do Us Part, Homicide Hunters and People's Magazine Investigation.

This channel was ripped away in 2021 after Warner Bros. Discovery and StarTimes couldn't come to an agreement. Since then, the channel was supplemented with CBS Justice in a joint venture with Paramount Global and AMC International.

TLC is a female skewed channel which pivots their content to reality television focusing on lifestyle and personal stories. Some of the content to have aired include Sister Wives, 90 Day Fiance, 1000-lb Sisters, Doubling Down with the Derricos and My Big Fat Fabulous Life.

Interesting enough, the channel is being reinstated on the platform after the pay-tv platform lost rights to DStv due to Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Similar to Discovery Channel, consumers would be getting to see select shows from Real Time with the help of Investigation Discovery.

Which begs the question, how long will these channels stick around cause every year it's the same runaround with StarTimes one minute it's there next minute is gone, whose to say that CBS Reality and CBS Justice won't just get booted from these platforms.

These 3 channels are said to reside on the Smart package from 3 November and onwards: TLC Ch:165, ID Ch:223 and Discovery channel Ch: 224.
