DreamWorks Channel Will Stop Airing On StarSat In South Africa And StarTimes Across Africa From Thursday And What Future Does The Pay-TV Platform Have?

Two years after the DreamWorks Channel owned by NBCUniversal launched in South Africa through StarSat And The Rest Of Sub-Saharan Africa through the StarTimes platform. It seems like the pay platform will be closing more international channels.

DreamWorks Channel goes off air this week as seen in the conversation:

DreamWorks Channel was unveiled alongside a bouquet of other channels in May 2020 before coming live in August offering series such as All Hail King Julien, The Adventures Of Puss In Boots and Dawn Of The Croods alongside other content like Casper Scare School and George Of The Jungle.

Since its inception, DreamWorks Channel was added to 8 more territories with Latin America being the 9th territory scheduled to launch the channel later in the year.

For a couple of years, it was believed StarTimes was the only alternative for the channel but that's not entirely the case as DreamWorks Channel can be viewable on Canal+ in some parts of Africa particularly Ethiopia and Rwanda.

StarTimes customers can continue watching the best of DreamWorks through Netflix and Showmax or relocate to the relevant regions for Canal+. South African viewers can easily view the content on eToonz (Openview 130/DStv 311).

As far as replacements go I doubt the platform is in any rush to source out alternative channels if anything I wouldn't be shocked if we got to see more closures. It's not like the channels which have been removed so far got replaced or anything of value was added in the last year.

These closures seem odd it's almost like they're ready to throw in the towel and leave other platforms to consume their clients. It seems as if they're adapting to a new business model which focuses on the local market. It could explain the additions of C12 and Jib TV.

The year has just started and I wouldn't be shocked if National Geographic was removed before it officially exits the market by 2023/4. Even the likes of Baby TV, Timeless Dizi Channel, FilmBox, Da Vinci Kids, Toonami and ESPN.

StarTimes could try investing in their own brands and use those outlets to licence content as seen with St Rise, St Kung Fu, St Novelas, Novelas E Plus and Star Kids. If no replacement or decent channel is launching viewers will find other ways to indulge.
