SABC Envisioned Plan For DTT And OpenView Rise To Glory

Back in the early 2000s SABC and e.tv had plans to launch their own STB which included more channels from these rivals and also more choice in what to watch.

SABC DTT plans started out with 18 channels you had: SABC 1-3, SABC 4, SABC 5, SABC Sports, SABC Movies, SABC Education, SABC News, a children's channel, a SMME channel, a health channel, a parliamentary channel, a music channel, a history channel and timeshift channels (1 show air an hour later).

While e.tv envisioned having 18 channels and never stated how many of these channels will be supplied by them.

Even though only 2 managed to materialize with 1 still on a test phase, SABC was likely to go bankrupt with all these channels in place even if pay platforms were to carry parts of these channels it wouldn't do much to keep all of them since they're likely to waste a fortune trying to build content for these channels.

Back in 2013/4, SABC former CEO Hlaudi implemented a 90% quota on their channels which led to a decrease in viewership particularly on SABC 3 and a loss of income. Due to this local quota most companies severed ties with the station even Disney was part of the back giving SABC access to 10% of the content with e.tv gaining the rest of it. They tried reducing the quota to 80% but that didn't work out for them.

Now imagine if that quota never existed and SABC managed to get all 18 channels running. The problem here would be the amount of money they'll waste on local content. It's proven to be challenging for the SABC to supply local programming on 3 channels imagine doing that with 18 channels especially if you don't charge monthly fees and most of your viewers don't pay TV licence.

e.tv also had plans to grow their channel lineup. They started with eMovies+, eToonz+, eAfrica+ and eKasi+ so far only the first two survived with newcomers eExtra, eReality, News&Sports and Rewind. Back then they had OpenView and their main concern was quantity so they added a bunch of crappy channels and hoped viewers would be glued to their screens that was not until 2017 came that they were more concerned about entertainment which led to decrease of channels in order to give better programming. Along the way they were struggling to make some doe and the viewership was weak so they added some of their channels on DStv for more income and viewership.

Since then, OpenView has managed to get their platform in 2 million homes and it famous in neighbouring countries that people there are using it illegally in order to avoid the entertainment available in their countries. It has become a charity case but this is to ensure that viewers get more entertainment on the platform.

If SABC got 18 of these channels running by now they would have scrapped a couple of them like SABC 4 & 5, children, SMME, movies and music which would bring them to a total of 10 channels. Even though they rely on funding and partnerships, those partnerships are likely to dissolve and those funders are likely going to take their money elsewhere. In the end, SABC new proposed channels are just the useful and not entertaining batch of channels which include education, sports, health, parliamentary and if possible history running which shows that they're trying to the PBS of South Africa. They're struggling to keep viewers glued to their screens so they want channels that other people will see useful in their everyday lives.

SABC Sports might be used to get new faces in sports another use for the channel is to help minimise disruption of sports on the main channels, Parliamentary might be the toughest one for them since it's not another channel for recycled goods, Health and if possible History will curved through partnerships since there's less content in these fields while archived Education channel is just a reruns channel in partnership with the department of education.

New Channel Alert: SABC Education Coming Soon To DStv And StarSat

As you all know SABC Encore is getting canned on DStv and SABC told a user through a media enquiry that MultiChoice had already planned to can the channel in 2018 and knew of its demise long before the public. Now another SABC channel is expected to be added on DStv really soon which will also be available on StarSat.

SABC Education, as most already know launched earlier this month. At the time viewers could only recieve the channel through DTT and online platforms and through an interview at Expresso on SABC 3 with the general manager at SABC he mentioned that they were in negotiations with pay platforms so that they can hopefully carry the channel.

Now it looks like DStv will be one of those pay platforms to carry the channel alongside StarSat. So far no release date has been issued yet on both sides but StarSat will add it on channel 313 my guess would be from 1st June around the time SABC Encore gets terminated and channel 316 could be it's channel number for DStv since some parts of Africa allocated a channel in that section.

StarSat hasn't responded to the media regarding the channel while MultiChoice is oblivious about it with regards to SABC Encore as SABC stated through an enquiry they are exploring the possibility of carrying the channel through another platform and StarSat has become that platform that usually sources reject or scrapped channels from DStv like AMC, Toonami, Glow TV just to name a few so they might add it.

SABC Education carries repeats from SABC 1-3 as well as archived content. As bad as it may sound the channel is beneficial for children's education. The good thing about these repeats, they don't have a lot of timeslots on the main SABC channels.

Sundance TV Stops Airing On DStv From June

MultiChoice doesn't stop with the surprises not only is SABC Encore and ITV Choice getting discontinued but also Sundance TV from AMC International.

Sundance TV launched in 2017 on DStv as a replacement channel for AMC. The only reason the channel existed was due to Fear The Walking Dead other than that there's pretty much nothing interesting on that channel it's basically another saturated TCM.

There's no details as yet on why these channels are getting scrapped it could have something to do with the pandemic as rumored for sometime that DStv is cutting back on costs. These channels were probably the first batch of channels set to go dark on the platform.

No replacements will be issued for these channels by the looks of it for those who watched Sundance they're being redirected to other movie channels, those with Encore will probably have to go back to SABC 1-3 and ITV Choice being BBC, M-Net and Universal. More channels will be added just not as placeholders for these channels.

SABC Encore Stops Airing On DStv After 5 Years

Yes, you heard correctly SABC Encore stops airing on DStv from June. The channel joins ITV Choice which is also set on DStv later in June.

SABC Encore was conceived through a 5 year agreement back in 2013 between SABC and MultiChoice. In this deal, SABC had to supply a news and entertainment channel. Both channels severed delays in their launch before they eventually launched on DStv.

SABC Encore was originally suppose to launch back in 2014 as SABC Entertainment. The channel along with SABC News were also part of DTT which is long overdue.

SABC originally plotted to launch 18 channels before downsizing their plans to 9 channels back in 2018 and Encore wasn't listed in those plans only SABC 1-3, Education and News were mentioned meaning it's possible that the SABC was planning to scrap the brand at the time another sign of its turmoil was it's Facebook account as it stopped being active early last year.

SABC went from 6 channels to just 5 again, for those who aren't aware SABC launched an educational channel through DTT platforms and online with plans to launch it on pay-tv platforms.

There's no reason yet as to why the channel is being scrapped maybe SABC and MultiChoice are cutting back on costs or MultiChoice no longer sees it viable to have it on the platform.
SABC also had another entertainment channel which outlived Encore called SABC Africa was also on DStv for at least 10 years before getting scrapped due to poor performance maybe that's the reason.

Toonami Has Been Added To Startimes Or StarSat Few Weeks After The Channel Stopped Airing On MultiChoice's DStv

As you already know DStv had Toonami running as a month long pop-up channel on the DStv platform to almost all DStv customers until the end of April even after its removal the channel still had an ongoing schedule for the rest of May.

For some reason the channel has been added to the Startimes (or StarSat) platform without any explanation or clarification from the platform on the duration of the channel or whether they plan to keep it full-time which seems unlikely.

Toonami which is owned by WarnerMedia targets the same audience as Cartoon Network the only difference is the channel is catered for superheroes. The channel carries action, drama and adventure.

The channel airs repeats of old DC Animation that once aired on Cartoon Network such as Batman, Green Lantern, Superman and Young Justice along with DC Movies.

This channel is just ripping off Superhero HQ for those of you who had DStv Compact back in March of last year at the time the channel was already ripping off the full-time Toonami channel on Kwesé TV till the brand shut down it's pay-tv service along with the full-time channel that had anime and selected Cartoon Network series at the time before being reduced to nothing but a pop-up channel.

It wouldn't surprise me if the channel eventually resurfaces again on DStv even after the channel's removal people still want the channel if it was on Compact you'd some happy faces over the channel's removal but since they made it more accessible more people grew attached to it cancelling out those that recieved the channel already under another name.

eMedia's Investments free-to-view platform Openview is rumored to add the youth based station RX Radio to help keep people updated with the coronavirus. On top of that eMedia recently launched a relief fund admist the pandemic.

MultiChoice Adds More Channels To DStv Now Service

Admist the coronavirus outbreak MultiChoice has added various channels to DStv and non-DStv subscribers. Along with adding some various other channels through the DStv platform.

Now MultiChoice will add Toonami (Channel 300), Keep Fit (Channel 133), Mzansi Live (Channel 113), M-Net Binge (Channel 114) through their DStv Now service.

Toonami the superhero version of Cartoon Network supplied by WarnerMedia will be added on Compact while M-Net Binge supplied by M-Net will go to Compact Plus. There's no details on the rest but I'm presuming it's for Access customers along with WWE channel and Mzansi Magic.

These channels will go live from Friday 25 March while Mzansi Live went live from Wednesday 23 March.

M-Net Binge Returns As A Pop-Up Channel On DStv

M-Net revives the shuttered brand M-Net Binge from Friday, 25 March on channel 114. Probably due to the Coronavirus and lack of entertainment across all platforms.

M-Net Binge launched in May 2017 on channel 900 to DStv Premium customers and was scrapped a year later only to return to 2 years later this time it's available on Compact Plus.

According to the TV Guide, M-Net Binge is home to best HBO series as well as doccies and movies. No end date has been provided for the channel as yet when there is one it will be added here.

M-Net Binge will air repeats of series such as Game Of Thrones, Band Of Brothers and Six Feet Under. Making it the ideal channel for Compact Plus customers.

MultiChoice SA Temporarily Adds AfricaNews And Da Vinci Kids And Here's Why (Nickelodeon And CNN Also Accessible)

Later today, MultiChoice silently opened up Da Vinci Kids, AfricaNews, CNN and Nickelodeon admist the coronavirus outbreak with ICASA wanting StarSat and MultiChoice to make channels free.

AfricaNews and CNN are all accessible to Access customers until April 30 with Nickelodeon being April 14 and Da Vinci Kids being the end of May. So far only Nickelodeon and CNN have been accessible in South Africa while the two just popped up recently on DStv with the rest of Africa adding it back in 2019.

Da Vinci Kids is an educational pay television channel for children aged 6–12 and families, and broadcasting in 19 language versions to more than 35 million homes worldwide. It broadcasts STEM and soft skills-based learning programs aimed at children and families during the daytime, and documentaries and educational series for grown-ups in the evenings. The channel can be found on StarSat in South Africa.

AfricaNews is a multilingual news media service, headquartered in Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo. The news channel is a subsidiary of France-based euronews and began broadcasting online, and via TV and satellite on 20 April 2016.

The strange part about these two new temporary channels is they're both closing at the same time as SuperSport channels so why didn't MultiChoice advertise them with the other existing channels opening for a limited time.

According to sources through a media enquiry, MultiChoice has been trying to launch AfricaNews since last year but ran through some technical and financial problems. It might also apply to Da Vinci Kids since both of these channels popped up in the test section at the same time and officially launched together.

Even PBS Kids is sort of suffering a similar altercation maybe PBS is trying to build the brand in other markets and merging their operations with Africa or maybe MultiChoice is working on some bugs either way these channels are going through some tough times.

Maybe A+E Networks is the cause of AfricaNews and Da Vinci turmoil since MultiChoice intended to dump Lifetime, History and Crime & Investigation only to keep two of them around and add 2 further channels which put more pressure to their pocket.

With this in mind AfricaNews and Da Vinci Kids might be future permanent additions while all the other channels will go off as scheduled. The only thing uncertain about those possible additions is their availability since Family customers carry them in other markets with South Africa being Access customers.

MultiChoice Opens Up A Bunch Of Channels To DStv And Non-DStv Subscribers

DStv has opened up a number of Supersport channels to its non-premium subscribers until 30 April 2020.

Supersport 1, which is exclusively available on the DStv Premium package, will now be available on DStv Compact Plus and DStv Compact, the group said in a statement on Friday 20 March.

Supersport 7, which is only available on the DStv Premium, Compact Plus and Compact packages, will also be available on the DStv Family and DStv Access packages.

Earlier this week, DStv announced that it will also make a selection of channels available to all South Africans for free through its DStv Now streaming platform.

DStv Now is bundled with DStv’s satellite broadcasting service, and allows subscribers to watch TV and shows from mobile devices, smart TVs, laptops, and more.

The new free channel package is available to all South Africans, however, and not only DStv subscribers.

The company said that in response to the coronavirus outbreak in South Africa, a number of DStv Now channels are no longer locked behind a subscription and are available to anyone with an Internet connection.

DStv channels which are now available to stream for free are:

100 – DStv
180 – People’s Weather
238 – SuperSport Play
313 – PBS Kids
320 – Channel O
343 – TBN
400 – BBC World News
401 – CNN
402 – Sky News
403 – eNCA
404 – SABC News
406 – Newzroom Afrika
414 – Euronews Now

Staying informed about the latest news on the virus is the first step in stopping its spread, said the company. For this reason, it has made several 24-hour news channels available.

In addition to these channels, episodes of popular series are also available via the Catch Up portal on the free service, including Igazi, The River, Isibaya, Binnelanders, Suidooster, and Die Ware Naarheid.

As Expected, KykNet Is Launching A Repeats Channel...On DStv Access ONLY

MultiChoice and M-Net is launching another new kykNET channel, kykNET Lekker, on 9 March 2020 which will be an Afrikaans TV channel compiled with shows from the existing kykNET library for DStv Access subscribers.

kykNET Lekker that will run on channel 148 on DStv will be compiled out of the best of kykNET programmes, including soaps, lifestyle shows, children’s entertainment and music shows that DStv subscribers on the DStv Access package haven't had the opportunity to see.

Interestingly, kykNET Lekker won't be upscaled and won't be available on any other higher-tiered kykNET packages like DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus, DStv Compact or DStv Family who will continue to receive the existing selection of allocated kykNET channels for those packages.

kykNET Lekker will launch with the first season of Jou Show met Emo, the fitness guru Lindi Kriel's Kry daai lyf and will include Afrikaans soaps like Binnelanders and Suidooster.

Suidooster will restart from season 1 for people who have never had the chance to watch and follow it, while the hospital set series Binnelanders will start from season 4.
Children's programming will include Teddies, Bundu Buddies, and Groentjie. Music shows like Joltyd, Kom ons Karaoke, #Duidelik, and Sakkie Langarm are also on the schedule.

"kykNET Lekker joins other kykNET channels to showcase Afrikaans content on an affordable and accessible package for DStv subscribers. It will become the home of a variety of the best Afrikaans programs from the kykNET vault and will only be available on the DStv Access package," says Karen Meiring, director of kykNET channels.

Other kykNET fare for 2020
On kykNET kykNET (DStv 144) singer and talk show host Karen Zoid will return for her 5th season as president of Die Republiek van Zoid Afrika, and Emo Adams will present the second season of the talent competition Maak my Famous on kykNET and kykNET&kie (DStv 145) to showcase some of our country’s talented upcoming artists.

Casper de Vries returns to kykNETwith his new sketch show, Cas oppie Kassie while viewers can also look forward to a brand new drama from Paul C. Venter later in the year. Venter was the writer of previous popular kykNET dramas such as Vlug na Egipte and Knapsekêrels.

On kykNET&Kie a new music talk show entitled Koortjies is starting soon with the popular gospel musician Jonathan Rubain as presenter.

The crime series Op Seer se Spoor will return for a second season on kykNET&kie with presenter Ernusta Maralack revisiting the violent crimes that shook communities across the country.

SA Youth TV Rumored To Debut On DStv In June

According to sources, SA Youth TV is set to debut later in June (youth month) on DStv even though there's no official confirmation from either MultiChoice, SA Youth TV or its founder EDK Media.

The subscription and advert funded television channel has been working around the clock to get the brand up and running since then they have been going around schools, churches and colleges across the province. From February, they were building their subcommittees as they begin their activation across the province.

New Channel Alert On DStv (Rumor): Another KykNet Channel

Over the weekend where some may not be at home, others may scroll through the channels checking for something different then if they're lucky something appears that's what happened at the moment.

A viewer apparently noticed another Afrikaans Channel thinking it could be Via, KykNet or its sister channel only for the channel to have a different format it begs to wonder if MultiChoice plans to expand the Afrikaans lineup soon.

This untitled channel has programming such as Binnelanders, Suidooster, Kom Ons Karaoke and Die Laaste Wals. Content which air on KykNet already which seems natural for a possible "new" channel.

Maybe it's another KykNet channel set to replace KykNet Nou or Kie (doubt it) or maybe its coming as an additional channel for customers without any Afrikaans programming either way the channel seems more like Discovery's Real Time (repeats).

More details regarding the channel might be unveiled in a few weeks time including the channel's name, package and release date. If it happens to be another Real Time/SABC Encore type channel it will probably be more beneficial to Access or Easyview customers.
