The Whereabouts Of Sony Channel And Sony Max

Sony Channel (also known as Sony Entertainment Television) was a general entertainment channel based of the branding of the same name in India alongside defunct sister channel, Sony Max both of which were available in the African market in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

Some of the programming featured on these channels included The Amazing Race, Scrubs, Baywatch, Baggage, Drop Dead Diva, 1000 Ways To Die, Fear Factor, The Boondocks, Fatal Attraction, My Wife And Kids, Friends, Crossing Lines and Impractical Jokers.

The channel were seen as another alternative to brands like M-Net, Universal and BBC Brit and went as far as competing with the likes of Comedy Central and MTV. Sony Channel and Sony Max had everything going for themselves until that fateful show Gogglebox changed everything.

In 2015, Sony made their first attempt in producing local content with the launch of Gogglebox a series where random people watch various content particularly on DStv and you got to see their reactions to whatever was viewed on the platform.

It was this same show that caused a lot of scandal not only to the production crew but Sony in general. The crew of the show claimed to have viewed content that MultiChoice wasn't giving their consumers which led to the cancellation of the series.

Reruns were made available but from that point forward Sony had been alienating themselves from society offering less new content and often shuffling shows between channels despite their accessibility to the market.

In 2018, Sony Crime was introduced as a replacement to Sony Channel offering shows like Orange Is The New Black, Person Of Interest, CSI and Law And Order which kind of signalled the end of the brand in Africa of course most hoped that they would be saved.

But from what's been seen with several linear channels like Disney XD, FOX, FOX Life and EVA usually when a channel stops offering new content it usually means the channel is on the chopping which was the case with DStv as viewers had to resort to M-Net and Universal.

The Sony Channels were made available for another year until they were subsequently discontinued on another defunct platform Cell C's Black.

Sony Entertainment Television operated a number of linear channels like the kids channel POP and music channel KISS all of which were terminated as the company now opts to supply content to the market and not linear channels.

As of 2022, the only regions to supply a Sony linear channel are in Latin America and Germany while others like Turkey, Asia and the UK join Africa on their demise.

As mentioned, the names of the Sony Channels in Africa were derived from India which remain active but for different programming and audience while DStv uses the channel numbers for Sony Channel and Max for sports or as Vince McMahon calls it Sports Entertainment.

But that's the only thing Sony took from India the brand names as the channels were managed by the UK which has since then been acquired by Narrative Capital with the Sony branding removed from all assets.

Sony Max never existed in those regions and most if not all the Sony Channels are using the "Great!" branding and Sony Channel now Great TV! features shows like Castle, M*A*S*H and The Persuader and Hart To Hart basically old series.

Is Sony's linear offering in better hands I guess but with streaming taking the media by storm you never know if some restructuring will take place but all the best for the new management.

New Series Alert (Rumour): Super Dancer Coming Soon To Zee World Alongside Some New Developments For Zee One And The First Popular Demand Of 2022 On Telemundo Africa Is...PRICE OF FAME

Sony and Zee are working hand in hand

Sony and Zee are expected to put their aside and form a joint company. It's likely that we'll be seeing some Sony originals although there's not that many viewers get a choice between Zee TV, &TV and now Sony TV.

According to sources, Zee World will be introducing a brand new kids show Super Dance from Sony TV making it the first program from the brand to debut on the Zee brand.

Talented children in the age groups of four and thirteen compete against each other to win the title and entertain everyone through their performances.

On Zee World's duplicate, we could be some schedule changes. To be honest I doubt this will last long or at least for some areas but Zee World is doing it and Star Life underwent the procedure later on.

Zee One's primetime offering is said to increase from 5 to 7 days a week which seems logical. Viewers watch TV on a daily basis and not everyone is delighted to catch-up on content they've already seen.

The lineup will include content from other Zee brands including Zee Zest (Formerly Living Foodz), Zee Cinema (currently seen on DStv), regional productions and the usual Zee World.

Popular demands continue through 2022 on Telemundo

All channels got them so I'm saying why can't Telemundo do the same. 2022 started taking off we got a new series The Search For Frida and the first repeat to grace 2022 Price Of Fame.

Mateo Solar, music producer and member of a Latin family of artists making their mark in the world of music, falls in love with Manara Matamoros, a singer his company plans to release as a new pop star.

Sony Pictures Television Revives The Sony Channel In The United Kingdom, Is South Africa And The Rest Of Africa Destined For The Same Fate?

On Tuesday September 10th, 2019 Sony Pictures Network (SPN) relaunched the Sony Channel in the UK the only difference is the channel now carries factual programming besides international drama series.

SPN supplied channels such as Sony Channel and Sony Max to MultiChoice's DStv and Cell C's defunct service Black along with POP (which was also available on Starsat) and True Movies 1. Before their departure, the company stated they were examining other possibilities in the territory and remain excited about future programming opportunities.

Let's face it SPN has hit rock bottom in Africa and it's gonna be a long bridge to build. They launch a channel, nurture it and as it grows they walk out the door. You had Animax which didn't do so well and might have fractu red any possibilities of having anime on DStv anyways its not like the channel is doing well internationally then you had its successor Sony Max a decent reality channel for men which will never be heard from again.
Unlike the SABC, SPN has potential Gogglebox was the reason for its downfall ever since the whole scandal relating to that show. They layed low for the past 2 years along with their channels so viewers got endless repeats (kind of like what's being seen with FOX Life) only for those same repeats to sit on other channels with viewers creating some seperation from those channels giving MultiChoice some reason to pull the plug.
No one knows why MultiChoice decided to remove the Sony Channels long before SPN exit from the market maybe they figured something like this would happen or maybe they know more of Sony's plans within the market either way they have a tough journey ahead of them.

Bye Bye Sony Channel And Sony Max From The End Of October On DStv

Cape Town – MultiChoice is dumping the Sony Channel (DStv 127) and Sony MAX (DStv 128) from its DStv satellite pay-TV platform at the end of October after not renewing the channel's carriage contract with Sony Pictures Television Networks (SPTN).

MultiChoice was asked why it decided not to renew the carriage contract but declined to answer.

In a tense statement, MultiChoice says the Sony channels will stop airing on DStv and that "as from end October 2018, Sony Channel (DStv channel 127) and Sony MAX (DStv channel 128) will stop airing on DStv. The current contract with Sony will expire end of October".

Emma Marshall, spokesperson at Sony Pictures Television for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region said in a response to a media enquiry on Friday that "Sony Pictures Television's channels in Sub-Saharan Africa, Sony Channel and Sony Max, will stop being carried on MultiChoice’s DStv platform at the end of October, as the contract between SPT and MultiChoice expires at that time".

"We thank our viewers in the region for their support. SPT is excited about future opportunities in the Sub-Saharan African market and is exploring programming options for the continent."

The Sony Channel rebranded from Sony Entertainment Television in September 2014 after MultiChoice added it 11 years ago in November 2007.

In January 2011 MultiChoice added Sony MAX as a male-focused channel and as a replacement for Sony's terminated Animax channel. MultiChoice then said that it hoped to do "many more Sony channels on our DStv platform" and that “Sony MAX is fitting in perfectly with the DStv platform”.

The Sony Channel and Sony MAX will remain available as linear TV channels on Cell C black on channels 203 and 204.

The Sony Channel and Sony MAX have largely been neglected over the past two years.

In 2016 MultiChoice Africa removed both channels from DStv and GOtv elsewhere in Africa outside of South Africa but later returned it to its GOtv digital terrestrial television subscription service.

In South Africa, MultiChoice also came close to removing the channels at this time, according to sources, who said that the two Sony channels were destined to suffer the same fate as in the rest of Africa after Naspers' pay-TV arm embarked on a wider plan to cut back on channels with too much repeat programming that were angering DStv subscribers.

In the end the Sony Channel and Sony MAX both got a last-minute reprieve, but now the axe finally came down on the channels due to too much old content and repeats.

In mid-2016 Sony Pictures Television Networks for Africa and the Sony Channel dragged MultiChoice into scandal for the faking of Gogglebox South Africa by making as if TV households were watching content across DStv channels that MultiChoice never even showed.

Gogglebox SA got cancelled with people involved in the scandal fired. 2017 also marked the first year since SPTN started doing it in 2013 that Sony Television in Africa stopped doing any kind of annual Sony upfront event in South Africa with 2018 that also had none.

The accomplished and respected Sonja Underwood who used to be Sony Pictures Television Networks' territory director for Sony Africa's channels also left Sony at the end of March 2017, something that Sony didn't announce, with no new Africa boss who engaged with media or TV critics the past two years.

In July 2018 SPT promoted Kunle Falodun as the "country" leader for Africa to drive and look after Sony's plans and its channel distribution for the African continent, including South Africa.
