The Overlaps Between MultiChoice And Canal+

MultiChoice and Canal+ are currently engaging with (ICASA) regarding MultiChoice Pty. Limited (LicenceCo). During the year, ICASA had asked for written submissions from various parties and following recommendations from the Competition Authority are likely in the final stages of transaction.

When MultiChoice and Canal+ manage to complete all the regulatory requirements by October 8 including that of LicenceCo. I think one question that remains in mind would be the overlap between the broadcasters.

While Canal+ doesn't have existing foothold in South Africa they do clash with MultiChoice Africa primarily Ghana, Rwanda and Niger.

MultiChoice and Canal+ may say that the two compliment each other as one caters for Anglophone with the other Francophone. But the reality is that both companies cater for each other's target group to a lesser degree.

As reported, Canal+ already owns ROK Studios and with the acquisition of MultiChoice brings Africa Magic under one umbrella. The fate of these broadcasters is still up in the air even if plans were to retain respective brands there's no guarantee that the rates used on Africa Magic remains the same.

ROK comprises of just two channels while Africa Magic has over 5 channels (most of which have diversified in recent years). This is followed by the entity's respective pay-tv services MultiChoice with DStv and GOtv followed by Canal+ with its Afrique offering.

On the basis of sports, MultiChoice comes with SuperSport, ESPN and Racing240 and while we understand that Canal+ comes as a french broadcaster it offers W-Sport and NBA TV. With this merger, the acquiring company using implements cost cutting mechanisms.

Canal+ being another MultiChoice in France and Europe one has to wonder how dependent the merged entity would be on international providers for content. Especially with the absence of Zacu Entertainment, Marodi TV, Plan A and SPI International on DStv.

DStv consumers have been complaining about too much old content coming to channels and from what has been implied through other sources. They could look to scale back on content particularly from channels 101-130 as content there is being optimised for streaming.

With DStv looking to undergo some major overhaul which MultiChoice is expected to address by the fall of 2025 to early 2026. They could as well use that time to reduce channels and minimise rates if it meant getting more consumers hooked onto Showmax.

Reminder: Paramount Skydance Corporation Expected To Launch On August 7th

Paramount Global’s co-CEOs told employees Friday that they expect an August 7 closing date for the company’s merger with Skydance, praising staffers’ efforts during the grueling process of getting the deal done.

The companies had earlier confirmed the expected closing date, which follows an epic, years-long effort to sell the home of Paramount Pictures and CBS.

In a memo obtained by Deadline, co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins wrote that despite all of the turbulence, “Paramount has made great progress – none greater than over the past year. We truly have momentum as a company and that’s a testament to you, our talented teams, with your incredible ability to deliver hit shows and blockbuster films, and all the critical pieces that make those things happen behind the scenes from BALA, finance, HR, communications, marketing, technology, distribution, partnerships, sales, consumer products, government relations and more – even in the context of a rapidly evolving landscape.”

The trio acknowledged that workers likely have questions, and they promised to offer updates in a timely fashion. The trio, elevated to the Office of the CEO after the ouster of Bob Bakish in the spring of 2024, called it “a great honor” to have led the company. Cheeks is slated to stay with the new company, while McCarthy and Robbins are departing.

“Collectively, we have been in the industry for decades and, like you, we have called Paramount our home and together we have seen the incredible evolution of the entertainment industry,” they wrote.

Paramount and Skydance have confirmed that their long-gestating merger is expected to finally close on August 7.

The date had been mentioned in recent days by sources familiar with the transaction, but the companies confirmed it Friday in a press release.

The $8 billion-plus transaction received the FCC’s blessing Thursday, effectively bringing an end to the year-long business saga. With that final hurdle cleared, only administrative details and paperwork are left to be completed before the combination can become finalized.

Along with the date, the companies said the new company will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol PSKY. Paramount had traded under PARA.

The companies also announced various deadlines for deadlines for Paramount stockholders of record and certain other Paramount stockholders to elect the form of consideration they wish to receive for their shares. Common shareholders will have the election deadline of 5 p.m. ET next Thursday, July 31. For shares of Paramount common stock held by current or former employees of Paramount, the election deadline is 4 p.m. ET on Monday, July 28.

Shareholders who do not make an election before the deadline will automatically receive stock in the new entity. The value on Paramount Class B shares stipulated in the merger agreement is $15.

Friday’s announcement filled in a couple of blanks, but there are many more questions looming as the two companies prepare to become one. The extent of further layoffs is top of mind for many, especially following a period of major downsizing. Also unclear is the fate of the company’s linear cable networks, which are still throwing off cash but declining markedly in terms of ratings and advertising due to ongoing cord-cutting.

Recap To The Last Month: SABC 2 Brings Back Anime Weekdays At 5PM With Inazuma Eleven

Last year, SABC 2 made the abrupt decision to phase out anime from its 5PM timeslot in favour of food show, The Taste. For a show like The Taste, it would have been a lot better if the SABC had aired it an hour later as treated as an animation slot for the longest time anyone has watched the channel.

It was home to Yu-Gi-Oh, Bleach, Dragonball and One Piece so for them to discard such a timeslot only alienated more viewers. Recently, there was a report done on the broadcaster regarding its news slot and it was revealed that the SABC hadn't done any research before changing its timeslot.

So it's likely what led to Inazuma Eleven now being reinstated at 17:00 as SABC 1 has become the only profitable channel alongside a few radio stations by the public broadcaster. As some consumers remember, SABC thought it would be a smart idea to dump most of its Afrikaans content on SABC 3.

SABC 3 has been the least watched channel on their stable and while the move helped the channel garner more relevance particularly when TAMS was still distributed. The viewership for these programs plummeted as some consumers struggle to view them while others moved to e.tv and KykNet.

The problem part to SABC 2 reinstating anime is that there is higher preference for shows like Dragonball and Bleach as opposed to Yu-Gi-Oh and Inazuma Eleven. Although, SABC 2 has a history with anime particularly with Yu-Gi-Oh this type of content is not a priority.

When Dragonball Super launched on SABC 2 it was one of the top 10 shows on TAMS compared to when Yu-Gi-Oh and The Taste were on in the same timeslot. I just figure with them being insolvent they could rebroadcast Dragonball Super and the latter seeing as SABC 2 is constraint with repeats.

Although SABC 2 is a loss maker very much like SABC 3 these channels have shown that they could garner stability. With SABC 3 there's sports I don't see they can't just move SABC 1's offering there as it had shown to garner more traction there despite being the least watched same goes with anime on SABC 2.
