Reminder: Get Ready For A Trash-Tastic Adventure With The Hilarious And Action-Packed Garbage Boy And Trash Can Premiering On Cartoon Network Africa On Monday, 17 July @ 16:45 CAT
He's a superhero with no actual superpowers, and his sidekick is a trash can, but that's not going to stop young Tobi from using absolutely anything he finds to set off on a world of amazing adventures in Garbage Boy and Trash Can, the first Cartoon Network superhero animated comedy series to be produced in Africa.
Premiering on Cartoon Network Africa on 17 July at 16:45 CAT, Garbage Boy and Trash Can was commissioned by Cartoon Network Africa following Nigerian animator Ridwan Moshood winning the CN Creative Lab initiative. The series was produced in collaboration with the newly-formed animation production company Pure Garbage, a South African-based company specially launched for the project, which is a partnership between series creator Ridwan Moshood, Mike de Seve, head of US multi–Emmy Award-winning studio Baboon Animation and Nick Wilson, founder of African Animation Network (AAN). Magic Carpet, a leading Nigerian animation studio, co-produced the show, and actors from Uganda, Malawi, Nigeria and the USA voice the characters. This global collaboration marks the first innovative model in animation between talents from Africa, Europe, and the US under Cartoon Network's creative production process – a process intended to train and mentor African talent and produce content of international broadcast quality.
He may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound or run faster than a speeding locomotive, but Garbage Boy's belief in his superpowers may just be his actual superpower! Where most people see trash, Garbage Boy sees unlimited opportunities for fun and adventure. Whether it's building a bazooka out of some old PVC piping that fires wads of mouldy socks or an electron microscope from broken VCR parts, Garbage Boy believes that everything – even garbage - is worthwhile. Exiled from his home planet, the alien robot, Trash Can, is driven by his sense of duty. He has an infinite intellect, a cyber-noggin filled with galaxies of knowledge and a compact, metallic frame housing an endless number of gadgets. Together, they tackle their major enemies – boredom and Dr Sore Eyes (full name 'Braintomus Bombastus Edgar James Vanessa Sore Eyes, Ph.D.) – although the latter does a pretty good job of thwarting himself as he tries to avenge being shunned by the Academy of Really Real Sciences.
Creator, Director and Art Director Ridwan Moshood found inspiration for the show in the adversity of his childhood. "The inspiration for creating the lead characters came from the derogatory name some bullies used to call me back in junior secondary school. However, I soon realised that this name did not define my identity or limit my potential," he says. "It is this powerful message that I aim to convey to children currently experiencing name-calling and bullying. That's why I decided to create a show centred around the character 'Garbage Boy' who, despite the name, is actually a superhero — a symbol of overcoming adversity and proving that hurtful labels do not determine one's true worth."
The style of Garbage Boy and Trash Can is a homage to the cartoons Moshood watched during his childhood, mainly the Saturday morning shows like Dexter's Laboratory, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, The Powerpuff Girls, and more. "It is Dexter's Laboratory that greatly influences the artistic style of the show, as it remains my favourite Cartoon Network series. In fact, meeting the creator, Genndy Tartakovsky, is a personal aspiration of mine," he says.
Cartoon Network Africa's Creative Lab began its journey in June 2018 as an initiative designed to bring innovative, local short-form content to the channel and its digital platforms while reinforcing the local relevance of the brand. "The Cartoon Network team was amazed by Ridwan's talent and his vision for the show, even then – and we're delighted to see the final product adding to Cartoon Network's diverse and original content," says Ana González, Editorial Lead: Southern Europe and Africa, Kids Brands, Warner Bros. Discovery. "We are proud to produce and bring on air a pure African story with a fantastic Nigerian comedy hero in Garbage Boy and Trash Can, featuring fresh local animation talent and a truly stellar African voice cast to produce local, inclusive content."

New Series Alert: Cartoon Network And Max Greenlight New Preschool Series For Cartoonito, Hop! From Arthur Series Creator Marc Brown
Following last year’s momentous finale of the beloved “Arthur” series, creator Marc Brown is beginning his next chapter in the world of children’s television with “Hop,” a new preschool animated series greenlit today by Max. The series marks Brown’s first television show since “Arthur’s” staggering 25-year run, where he began telling children’s stories. Co-creators and fellow “Arthur” alums, Peter K. Hirsch and Tolon Brown, will join Marc in bringing his beloved children’s book illustrations to life on “Hop,” produced by Epic Story Media and animated by Loomi Animation.
Epic has engaged RespectAbility – the esteemed advocacy nonprofit organization fighting stigma and advancing opportunity for people with disabilities – to consult on the series. “Hop” follows an eclectic group of besties whose comedic adventures teach preschoolers about embracing their own uniqueness. Led by Hop, an enthusiastic, empathetic frog with one leg shorter than the other, he and his quirky friends address kid-relatable problems with a healthy dose of laughter, silliness, and adventure.
Set in the aspirational community of Fair Village, every episode is grounded in emotional reality but soars into the world of fantasy, populated by dragons, trolls, talking banjos, and magic crayons. With a gentle balance of humor and heart, our heroes go on fun escapades to discover that they can overcome any obstacle with perseverance, creativity, and teamwork. Together, they show us the power of friendship and kindness as they navigate the mud puddles of life.
“Even before ‘Arthur’ ended, I was nurturing a new project about a little frog named Hop, for a younger audience,” said Brown. “As Hop’s world grew in my imagination, I drew inspiration from the great work my friend Fred Rogers had done. With ‘Arthur,’ we occasionally introduced characters with disabilities, but they never became part of the ensemble cast in any meaningful way. But the characters in “Hop” reflect many kids who are underrepresented in the media. Some of our characters have disabilities but they never define who they are or what they can achieve. Kids are kids and each one is unique and filled with potential. And kids love to have fun, that’s what ‘Hop’ is all about!”
Ken Faier of Epic Story Media adds, “We’re extremely proud of our work and collaboration with industry experts on representing characters in an inclusive way. It is an honor to have developed ‘Hop’ with Marc, Peter and Tolon who know how to engage not only today’s youth but parents looking for quality content. We believe ‘Hop’ will have longevity in the marketplace for many years to come.”
Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang added: “Marc is a legend in children’s programming, having created one of the most iconic television shows that has garnered almost every honor imaginable. ‘Hop’ exudes everything families love about ‘Arthur,’ but with a fresh cast of modern characters that authentically represent the sundry of little eyes watching TV.”

Together, we can make a world of difference. We look forward to extending our Cartoon Network Climate Champions campaign to equipping kids with the tools to tackle electronic waste in their lives."

Set in a world of swashbuckling heroes, royal rivalries, and magical fairy-tale creatures, Prince Ivandoe’s quest will take him far away from home and place him in the path of unimaginable dangers…and some rather spectacular nincompoops!
The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe shorts first premiered on Cartoon Network Africa in February 2018. It went on to rank as the #1 show across all kids’ channels in Africa during its time slot*. Following the success of the short-form series, the brand-new five-chapter show introduces new colourful kingdoms and characters and returns to some familiar characters such as Prince Ivandoe’s nemesis, the awful Prince Svan, Jezebel, the tricky Robber Princess, and who could forget the staggeringly odd Sassy Gnomes. In Chapter One, Prince Ivandoe bids farewell to ‘The Kingdom of the Mighty Stag’ and sets off on his quest through The Five Kingdoms, in five distinct chapters that will lead him ultimately to the mysterious Eagle Mountain and the legendary ‘Golden Feather’ - said to grant one’s true heart’s desire.
Created by Danish animators Christian Bøving-Andersen and Eva Lee Wallberg and produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe in London, the new series will see the original’s three-minute shorts robustly expanded into 20 episodes that are each 11 minutes long, introducing viewers to even more intriguing characters, slapstick comedy and exciting adventures. True to Cartoon Network's humour and wackiness, fans of all ages will find plenty of funny moments to make them laugh out loud.
Kids can also take up their own quest at Fourways Mall in Sandton, Johannesburg, from Wednesday, 31 May, to Sunday, 4 June. Fun challenges will await them in the giant maze in the mall's centre court – with prizes up for grabs for the valiant princes and princesses who complete their quest!
Join Prince Ivandoe on his journey through Svanland and The Forest of Outlaws in the first two chapters of The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe on Cartoon Network Africa from Monday, 15 May, at 16:50 CAT and every weekday. QUEST ON!!!
