Multiple E! Branded Channels Are Likely Set To Close Internationally Soon As Bravo Debuts In Africa

During the week, it was reported that NBCUniversal would be shuttering E! Entertainment from Africa's shores after 21 years on the air. With Bravo set to replace the channel on DStv in October, at the time of publishing NBCUniversal hadn't stated why E! Entertainment is being discontinued.

But if we could guess, it likely has to do with E! Entertainment being spun off from NBCUniversal. With the channel folded under Versant, NBCUniversal can't distribute E! Entertainment in Africa besides that it has seen a rapid decline in Europe.

Bravo being a reality tailored brand has a well established presence in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. For sometime, E! Entertainment had been distributing various content from Bravo including the Below Deck franchise; Married to Medicine and Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

For the most part, NBCUniversal hadn't stated what is to become of Live From The Red Carpet or E!'s remaining shows. But from what we've seen with various rebrands over the years, these shows will gradually be phased out cause in the end E! Entertainment doesn't have much going on.

If there's one thing E! Entertainment demise in Africa suggests is that NBCUniversal is looking to retire the brand soon. Viewers should expect for more feeds to get phase out in favor of Bravo because with E! Entertainment folding under Versant this would only leave Bravo for reality content under NBCUniversal.

Aside from Africa, NBCUniversal had also been managing the feed for the brand in Balkans, Benelux, France, Greece and Cyprus, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scandinavia, Serbia and Slovenia. It's likely we'll be seeing more of these feeds close down in favor of Bravo in the not-so-distant future.

NBCUniversal International Networks & Direct-To-Consumer announced today that Bravo Africa will officially launch on 7 October 2025, replacing E! Africa and delivering DStv subscribers a premium selection of reality programming that promises drama, laughs, and unmissable moments.

Things are going all natural in new series Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind. From 17 August, viewers can tune into new episodes airing on E! (DStv 124) every Sunday at 7.05pm, until the season finale on 5 October 2025. 

Hosted by international radio and television personality Michelle Visage (RuPaul’s Drag Race) with plastic surgeon Dr. Terry Dubrow (Botched) and body image expert Dr. Spirit, PhD, Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind follows nine celebrities and social influencers through a transformative journey of self-discovery at the “Rewind Retreat,” as they decide whether to reverse previous plastic surgeries and return to a more natural look. Through eye-opening challenges, unexpected emotional connections and laugh-out-loud moments, the participants are asked to look within while reassessing their concept of beauty.  

Meet the participants:

• Aubrey O’Day is a platinum singer and reality TV personality known for the girl group Danity Kane, which launched her successful solo career in pop music and several TV shows. She wants to reconsider her facial filler at the Rewind Retreat while connecting with the other participants on their shared experiences.   

• Reality star Kim Zolciak was an original cast member of The Real Housewives of Atlanta and a star of the spin-off series Don’t Be Tardy, which followed her family life and documented several of her cosmetic surgeries. Following her recent divorce and some weight loss, Kim joins the retreat with her daughter Brielle, where she reevaluates one of her procedures.

• Reality star and influencer Brielle Biermann joins her mum, Kim, at the retreat where she weighs the pros and cons of facial filler. Recently engaged, Brielle wants a softer, more natural look as she heads into her wedding.

• Rapper and TV personality Jessica Dime gained prominence as a cast member on four seasons of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. Now a mum and wife, she continues to make music and build her fanbase. At the retreat, she is hoping to “tone down” certain procedures but worries that it could impact her career.   

• Brazilian-born Larissa Santos Lima is a TV personality and content creator that rose to fame after appearing on 90 Day Fiancé. After undergoing extensive cosmetic surgeries on her face and body, Larissa worries her enhancements are limiting her ability to have an active lifestyle.

• Sebastian Bails is a social media and YouTube star known for his comedic characters, as well as his candid videos about his journey with cosmetic injections at a young age. Sebastian is vocal about the pressures of maintaining appearances in the influencer industry but his reasons for seeking out surgery catches everyone by surprise.  

• Sophia Elgerabli is a content creator and model whose career took off after two BBL procedures. In this phase of life, she is shifting to new business ventures and wants to be taken more seriously with an updated look.

• Irish content creator Alan McGarry is known for their bold presence in the reality TV world and LGBTQ+ media. Alan used filler procedures to help boost their self-confidence but they came to the retreat with regrets over a BBL.

• Kathy Brown ended up in the glamorous yet high-pressure world of Playboy modeling, where she eventually had a breast augmentation that caused extreme physical discomfort and emotional strain. She hopes to reverse the surgery so she can resume an active lifestyle centered around her grandchildren.

E! News Nightly Show Has Been Cancelled On E! As The Brand Pivots Toward A Digital Future

E! News has been canceled as a linear television show, a source with knowledge of the decision. It will officially end on Sept. 25; the nightly entertainment-news program launched in 1991. The show had a two-year hiatus during COVID. E! News will continue on as a digital brand.

Employees learned of the cancellation news yesterday. Tonight’s show will be a repeat; new episodes will resume next week. Access Hollywood and Access Daily will continue on as normal from their production facility at Terrace Studios.

Some E! News correspondents will follow the channel to Versant (formerly referred to simply as SpinCo.), the source said, though those roles are as TBD.

NBCUniversal has split itself in two. The NBC broadcast network, the studios, Peacock and Bravo will stay as key pieces of NBCU; all of the rest (USA Network, Syfy, E!, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen and Golf Channel, plus digital businesses Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes and Golf Now) will make up new company Versant.

Versant will be led by CEO Mark Lazarus, chief financial officer and chief operating officer Anand Kini, and chairman David Novak; other senior executives will be plucked from the ranks of NBCUniversal.

Cable channel E! still airs (some) original programming, like Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind and Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour, as well as acquired content. The network recently announced upcoming series Kimora: Back in the Fab Lane and E!’s Dirty Rotten Scandals. The network remains a destination for red-carpet coverage as well as January’s Critics Choice Awards.

E! Africa To Unveil Local Adaptation Of Hit Comedy Dating Series Dating #Nofilter

E! Entertainment Television – the pop culture channel from NBCUniversal International Networks & DTC – today announced the start of production for Dating #NoFilter, a 10x60’ unscripted comedy dating series produced by Brainstorm Entertainment.

Licenced globally by NBCUniversal Formats, the format originally aired on E! in the US and is being adapted for the African audience, with filming in progress at the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg. The show is set to premiere exclusively on E! Africa (DStv channel number 124) later this year.

Dating #NoFilter will follow a group of singles on blind dates whose search for love will be accompanied by commentaries from some of South Africa’s most hilarious celebrities. Amongst the 15 comedic cast are comedian, TV personality and actor Jason Goliath (E!’s Celebrity Game Night, Ses' Top La); actress and radio personality Hope Mhbele; and media personality and content creator Lebogang Tlokana – also known as “The Funny Chef.”

Jason and the other comics will watch the dates unfold, offering unfiltered commentary on each moment – from every awkward interaction to every touching glance. Inevitable dating disasters aside, the hope is that the couples will form genuine connections.

Produced by Brainstorm Entertainment for NBCUniversal International Networks & DTC, Dating #NoFilter is a hilarious take on modern dating. Dating #Nter is disoFiltributed globally by NBCUniversal Formats, which is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group. The series originally aired on E! in the US, with the African version marking the fourth international adaptation.

Dating #NoFilter is set to premiere on E! Africa (DStv channel number 124) later this year.

Could NBCUniversal Acquire The Real Housewives For E! Entertainment Or Could It Fold Under M-Net Once 1Magic Exits DStv?

During the week, we recieved word from various DStv consumers that MultiChoice will be axing both M-Net Essentials (ME) and 1Magic by February 2nd, 2024. In an enquiry, we were able to retrieve confirmation of the terminations which comes weeks before the demise of Emmanuel TV.

Since then, several DStv customers are looking to cancel or migrate to a cheaper price plan. This puts their Compact+ tier under junk status while their Compact consumers have access to ESPN, Comedy Central and Disney Channel.

While Me was basically an outlet to access content from M-Net, 1Magic had garnered prestige for shows like The River, Unmarried and Being Bonang. It was also the home to reality franchise The Real Housewives by Bravo TV with consumers left in the dark about the fate of the franchise.

As mentioned, it was reported that Me would be exiting alongside 1Magic leaving M-Net as the only other contender for the franchise. 1Magic catered for a different target group so either way consumers on M-Net may not be very welcoming of the inclusion of Housewives.

MultiChoice in partnership NBCUniversal will be rolling out a revamped Showmax streaming service. It had been speculated that MultiChoice probably wants to prioritise Universal TV also owned by NBCUniversal in place of Me as both reside within the same package.

When Me and 1Magic cancellation were reported no word on a follow-up for either brand was announced as seen when M-Net City and VUZU were axed.

Several content from Me can be viewed on Universal TV and this included Magnum Pi, The Equalizer, Chicago PD and NCIS: Los Angeles. If anything, could it be possible that The Real Housewives may end up on E! Entertainment I mean it wouldn't seem that far fetched.

E! Entertainment had been airing content from Bravo TV for a while now and this included shows like Below Deck Mediterranean, Million Dollar Listing and Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. Similar to Telemundo, the channel has been running short of new content.

The Real Housewives could help build up the schedule with the number of adaptations already produced. It would align NBCUniversal closer to their own assets as the latter would often get scooped up M-Net.

Could E! Entertainment Also Be Shutting Down On DStv And The Rest Of Africa??? Here's Why

NBCUniversal International has been slowly phasing out the E! brand across European countries. After Comcast had made some budget cuts to the programming, E! Entertainment had to sought out shows like Vanderpump Rules and Below Deck Mediterranean from Bravo.

During the week, both M-Net Movies and E! Entertainment were set to broadcast The Golden Globes but to consumer's dismay E! Entertainment had opted to not broadcast the red carpet. It was viewed as one of the signature looks for the channel alongside The Kardashians.

As mentioned above, E! Entertainment had shuttered in parts of Europe with the UK that closed by 31 December 2023 after 20 years with Germany a year prior on the same date. It lead to growing fear from several DStv consumers that the same fate could await the whole of Africa.

Similar to the likes of 1Magic and Lifetime, most channels to have exited the platform would often distance themselves from their primetime lineup and E! has been falling inline with these former DStv channels.

Besides that, E! Entertainment in the UK had also lost out on the red carpet and various other programs before closing down. Now consumers in Africa are witnessing the same outcome seen in Africa so it's only a matter of time till the channel closes down.

In other developments, MultiChoice is set to lose 3 more channels later in the month: 1Magic, Me and Emmanuel TV. This comes amidst their annual price adjustment and most consumers will wonder why they're paying more if they can't minimise the bloodbath of channels.

DStv Without E! Entertainment??? As NBCUniversal Looks To Close The Channel In The UK

During the week, it was reported that Peacock would be closing down in the UK by the end of 2023. But that's not the only thing NBCUniversal plans to scrap of their bucket list as E! Entertainment is also slated to go dark on Sky and Virgin Media with further content on Hayu.

Hayu serves as the digital counterpart of both E! Entertainment and Bravo which is also operated by NBCUniversal. From 2024, consumers wanting to watch shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Below Deck Mediterranean would need to view it on the streamer.

The news of its demise doesn't come as much of a shock following its closure in Germany by 2022. At the time, it was outlined that the feeds in the UK and Eastern Europe were anticipated to continue but from what we can see that was short lived.

If we had to guess why E! Entertainment was getting culled its probably similar to Disney's reasons for the terminating the FOX/Star general entertainment brand in parts of the world. The latter are putting more focus toward their direct to consumer business which has been making waves for a while now.

NBCUniversal has been cutting back on the original content slate for E! Entertainment which resulted in content from Bravo being added to the lineup. The idea of E! Entertainment becoming a thing of the past wouldn't seem far fetched or at least in regions where Hayu exists.

Hayu is available in United Kingdom, Ireland, Albania, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Canada, Netherlands, Belgium, Philippines, Hong Kong, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Poland. Although Hayu is not available in South Africa or anywhere in Africa the latter would form part of Showmax's existing offering.

Development Alertl: E! Entertainment Is Now Available To DStv Family And Access Customers

During the week, several DStv consumers particularly those on the Family and and Access bouquet spotted E! Entertainment (channel 124) on their bouquet with consumers asking Insidus for answers on this recent development seeing as customer care were of no use.

Through a video on Universal+ Africa YouTube page, it had been confirmed that E! Entertainment which was currently exclusive to DStv Premium, Compact+ and Compact has now been made added to Family and Access consumers.

E! Entertainment is a general entertainment channel operated by NBCUniversal which is home to shows like House Of Villains, Celebrity Game Night, Million Dollar Listing: New York, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Botched all of which is now viewable on Access as from yesterday.

The addition of E! Entertainment on DStv Access comes at the same time MultiChoice and BBC Studios extended their partnership which saw DStv Compact consumers get the general entertainment brand BBC UKTV with Family consumers viewing British cuisine on BBC Lifestyle. 

In other developments, MultiChoice and Ngwato Nkosi Group will be adding their third TV channel to the platform, Play Room. It is the country's first ever multilingual children's channel offering original content like Play Room Live alongside other shows like CoComelon and Game Shakers.

Created by Moshod Shades Ridwan in partnership with African Animation Network, the comedy-driven toon is about a boy with imaginary superpowers who fights for justice with his trusty sidekick. Moshood was inspired to create the series by his experience being bullied in school. As seen through various social outlets, the series had wrapped production.

It was slated to debut by the fall of last a but for some apparent reason that was never the case. Amidst the addition of Garbage Boy And Trash Can, the network is looking to air a brand new African inspired series, Junior.

The journey continues on eExtra with Elif

Currently on its third season, the series followed the 6 year old who got separated from her mother.

In the upcoming fourth season, Macide's sister, Kiymet comes after 30 years to revenge her. In the past, her husband abandoned her pregnant and married Macide. Together with her son Mahir, they make evil plans against the Haktanir family.

Just like most other instalments of the franchise, the series reflects the trials and tribulations of a single parent, David Seville, trying to raise six hyper-active Chipmunks. Like most parents, Dave's patience will be pushed to the limit, forcing him to end most sentences in "ALVINNN!!!"

The series gained a lot of popularity following its debut in 2015 on Nickelodeon (or Nicktoons) that multiple broadcasters such as e.tv acquired rights to the musical duo. So far the series has over 260+ episodes within 5 seasons with an additional two seasons possibly scrapped.

In 2019, it was announced an additional two seasons were ordered bringing ALVINNN!!! And The Chipmunks to 360+ episodes and 7 seasons through 2025 but as several sources noted Nickelodeon has removing the show or promoting them less internationally.

Coincidence, the owners of the Alvin And The Chipmunks franchise Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. and Janice Karman were exploring a potential sale and Paramount was said to be a bidder with these developments happening in several countries it could mean they're out the running.

Die Put becomes a eVOD exclusive

Ahead of its debut on eExtra in May, eVOD the digital component of the channel announced the upcoming third season of Die Put would be available to stream on the platform two months in advance. I don't know but it doesn't look like eMedia is pulling a DStv.

I mean several channels ranging from M-Net, 1Magic even the BBC are labelled as premium based channels with the second grade channels such as Me, Mzansi Magic and BBC UKTV picking up the slack now eExtra knows how it feels to be second rate.

Here's a synopsis to Die Put S3:

The Bellas are making a comeback on E!

Following the network's commitment to Total Bellas and Total Divas, E! a celebrity based lifestyle channel which since NBCUniversal had been cutting back on original programming supplies content from Bravo had announced the launch of Nikki Bella Says I Do.

Nikki Bella, a WWE Superstar, and, Artem Chingvintsev "Dancing with the Stars" champion, share all of their special moments of the ultimate decision to get married in the city of lights on their four-part special event tagging along will be Brie Bella.

The series is slated to premiere on E! from Sunday, 12 March at 19:05 CAT.

In other developments, E!'s sister channel Telemundo will be rolling out two new dramas in its repeat padded schedule, Until Money Do Us Part and Ana's Revenge in place of The Way To Paradise and The Chosen Granddaughter in the coming months.
