News Shorts: Monster High Reportedly Cancelled On Nickelodeon, WildEarth Rolls Out A Pay Service Under YouTube Premium And eSeries Launches Classic Sitcom 30 Rock

Lights go out on another program on Nickelodeon

Last month, Paramount Global removed several original shows from Nickelodeon as part of a tax write off these included shows like Rugrats and Blue's Clues And You. Prior to their inevitable demise some of these shows were canned on Nicktoons for new episodes.

Now there's reports going around that Monster High might be getting the two seasons treatment. Not due to these write offs or viewership consumption but the controversy surrounding the live-action department following ID's youth oriented doccie Quiet On Set.
Although there's no official confirmation from the network usually third party shows when axed remain on Nickelodeon. Similar scenario occured with Transformers: Earthspark and Regal Academy probably due to them licensing these shows.
WildEarth launches a pay subscription

Last month, it was reported that the cash strapped WildEarth would be exiting DStv by the end of April. After the channel tried to obtain carriages fees with MultiChoice settling on a sum of R6 million a year only to get sidelined at the last minute.

Since then, WildEarth has made several changes to their current offering with the halting of live shows. As they're eyeing potential partners who are looking to invest funds to the business provided that they make some changes to the structure of the channel.

With WildEarth set to exit DStv soon, they'll be looking to make content cuts as they try to stick around for the foreseeable future.

During the townhall, it was revealed that they'll be rolling out YouTube memberships basically a subscription service. This will be under YouTube Premium which is priced at R72p/m although consumers will still be access the free service.

Openview Shorts: uBettina Wethu Cancelled On e.tv After 4 Seasons With New Episodes On eSeries, SABC 3 Adds Afrikaans News And Other Content To Its Line-up This March And Chrysalis To Return With A Season 2 This April On eExtra

uBettina Wethu moving to eSeries, Isiphethu and untitled drama in development

Last year, the public broadcaster decided to make budget cuts by cancelling 7de Laan after 23 years on air with uBettina Wethu that was revived on e.tv. Since its debut on e.tv, the fashion drama had to captivate audiences in both 18:30 and 20:30 timeslots.

Unlike Nikiwe, the show wasn't present in the channel's top 20 offering as seen with Scandal, House Of Zwide and Isitha: The Enemy. It wouldn't be shocking if season 4 were to be its last as repeats broadcast at 16:10.

As reported on social platforms, new episodes of uBettina Wethu season 4 will air on eSeries at 18:25 with repeats of eKasi: Our Stories on e.tv in that timeslot. The channel is said to be working on two local dramas one titled Isiphethu and the second is in Afrikaans.
SABC undergoing schedule changes

During the week, it was reported that SABC had cancelled FOKUS one of the few Afrikaans programs on SABC 2. As plans are underway to move further Afrikaans content like Voetspore and 50/50 to SABC 3 exclusively but the problem with that is the lack of viewers.

Vetkoekpaleis was only able to pull around 800,000 viewers on SABC 2 in December while SABC 3 is currently sitting with 400,000. Other than that, SABC hasn't been producing much content for this audience and such move could lead to surge in viewers for eExtra's Kuiertyd and kykNET.

From what we can confirm Nuus will be airing on SABC 3 at 20:30 from March 4th serving as the only weekday Afrikaans offering. 50/50 and Voetspore will serve as weekly offerings therefore maxing out the offering - details of a date and time have yet to be mentioned.
Chrysalis returns to eExtra

Ahead of the second and possible third and final season debut, eExtra's Kuiertyd will be adding its first drama series from the Czech Republic titled Soos Nag En Dag by March 4th. The series consists of 26 episodes giving Chrysalis an open window by April 9th in the same timeslot.

The drama followed Nalan who seems perfect from the outside, was being severely abused by her mother. Sedat, one of the richest men in Turkey, proposes to her. But her husband and family, who seem perfect from the outside, are not normal either.

How tvN Managed To Retain It's Presence In Africa?

tvN is a South Korean entertainment channel operated by CJ ENM that distributes various drama series and reality shows. Some of the content to have been produced by the channel includes Doom At Your Service, Cheese In The Trap, The K2 and Ice Adonis.

MultiChoice added tvN as a pop-up channel in March 2021 and by popular demand extended it for another few months. They weren't onboard with adding tvN as a permanent channel and since then the broadcaster was looking to continue their services through another platform.

During that time, tvN had garnered a following and through that were able to engage with viewers before quietly distancing themselves from social platforms with further accounts of tvN Africa directed to tvN international.

The outcome of tvN Africa

Although, tvN is not viewable as a linear channel several broadcasters including eMedia Investments, VIU, Netflix and StarTimes had all been distributing selected content from the brand. Best plausible option is that CJ ENM was only able to retain their programs in the market.

MultiChoice to date still doesn't feature any content from tvN on their platforms. They were able to retain an alternative offering to tvN and that includes NHK World Japan, CCTV-4, CGTN and KIX.

Why eXposed Was Silently Rebranded To eSeries On Openview?

eXposed (now eSeries) is a free-to-air TV channel operated by eMedia Investments that launched in 2022 offering a variety of international content from dramas like Hudson & Rex, The Walking Dead and House Of Cards to reality like Dark Side Of The Ring and F**k That's Delicious.

The channel was launched in place of Rewind and was also used to supplement or package the international lineup formerly viewed on e.tv as the brand looks to boost their local and streaming endeavours.

It is basically a mashup/competitor of several DStv channels particularly premium brands like M-Net, 1Magic, Universal and Comedy Central while as supplying content from tvN, Vice TV and Lifetime.

During the month, eMedia Investments' silently renamed the channel to eSeries after a year on air. In which eMedia had stated would offer a “unmatched, dramatic rollercoaster ride” with international series across multiple genres making top-rated content available on Openview.

Of course, details surrounding the rebrand remains a mystery if one had to guess it probably has to do with the recent change in programming as Bollywood shows formerly seen on eExtra such as Surrender In Love is now on eSeries another is the lack of edgy series.

eXposed was being built up as another M-Net Edge/City which featured a lot of edgier shows like Doom At Your Service, Billions and Why Women Kill. Overtime, that part of the channel probably subsided as there's was not much content to retain that part of the brand.

Henceforth, the switch from eXposed to eSeries.

Development Alert: Nickelodeon Orders Brand-New Animated Preschool Series Super Duper Bunny League, eMedia Investments Replaces eXposed With eSeries On Openview

Nick Jr. will also be saving the world from crime

Nickelodeon has ordered Super Duper Bunny League (working title), a brand-new adventure-comedy preschool series based on the kids' comic book series by cartoonist Jamie Smart. Featuring 2D animation, the series (26 episodes) centers on a diverse group of bunny friends who must battle danger as they defend their city and the world from their archnemesis. Super Duper Bunny League is slated to launch 2024 in the U.S. and continue to roll out on Nick Jr. channels internationally.

"Super Duper Bunny League brings to life the colorful world that Jamie created with quirky imaginative characters and engaging stories filled with zany adventures and loads of fun," said Eryk Casemiro, Executive Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation, Global Series Content. "We are excited for the opportunity to take the comic books to the next level with a preschool animated series that combines big superhero action with silly cartoony comedy in a uniquely Nickelodeon way."

The Super Duper Bunny League is here to battle danger in all its forms as they defend Important City and the world from their arch-nemesis (and accidental creator), the inept Dr. Fuzzleglove, and a ridiculous rogues' gallery of cartoony villains. Whether battling sweet-toothed space pirates, sizzling lava monsters, giant metal monkeys or hot dog-hungry dinosaurs, the Bunnies must combine their new superpowers to defend truth, justice, and especially free time to snack and chill.

Super Duper Bunny League is produced by Nickelodeon Animation in Burbank, Calif. Robert Scull and Jonny Belt serve as executive producers and Jamie Smart as Consultant on the series. Production for Nickelodeon is overseen by Eryk Casemiro, Executive Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation, Global Series Content. Marielle Kaar serves as Nickelodeon's Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

eSeries is an official brand on Openview

The eXposed channel (109 on Openview) has been rebranded to eSERIES and now features a variety of international series across all genres. “From nostalgic and new sitcoms filled with spontaneous laughter bringing families together, drama series with warm, captivatingly relatable themes, to intense, darkly dramatic plot twists, and the thrill of the chase through the gritty arcs of crime.

Viewers can expect an unmatched, dramatic rollercoaster ride with international shows across genres” The newly branded eSERIES channel has an easy and consistent daily programme flow with international comedy (Practical Jokers, Neighbourhood Wars), nostalgic sitcoms from yesteryear (The Nanny, The Goldbergs), procedural dramas (Blue Bloods, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Suits, House of Cards) dark dramas (Walking Dead), and romance/” Girls Night” (The Bold Type, Why Women Kill).

Also available is some lifestyle shows like MasterChef and Love Island. Korean lovers can see programmes like Watcher and Doom at Your Service on weekends (with some weekday daytime repeats). There is so much to watch, and the channel has something which appeals to everyone, from early evening to late night. The beauty of the channel’s structure is that series episodes run daily, so you don’t have to wait a week to see the next episode of the series you’re following – this is a remarkable change in viewing.
