How tvN Managed To Retain It's Presence In Africa?

tvN is a South Korean entertainment channel operated by CJ ENM that distributes various drama series and reality shows. Some of the content to have been produced by the channel includes Doom At Your Service, Cheese In The Trap, The K2 and Ice Adonis.

MultiChoice added tvN as a pop-up channel in March 2021 and by popular demand extended it for another few months. They weren't onboard with adding tvN as a permanent channel and since then the broadcaster was looking to continue their services through another platform.

During that time, tvN had garnered a following and through that were able to engage with viewers before quietly distancing themselves from social platforms with further accounts of tvN Africa directed to tvN international.

The outcome of tvN Africa

Although, tvN is not viewable as a linear channel several broadcasters including eMedia Investments, VIU, Netflix and StarTimes had all been distributing selected content from the brand. Best plausible option is that CJ ENM was only able to retain their programs in the market.

MultiChoice to date still doesn't feature any content from tvN on their platforms. They were able to retain an alternative offering to tvN and that includes NHK World Japan, CCTV-4, CGTN and KIX.

New Series Alert: DeAPlaneta Entertainment Suits Up with ‘Hero Inside’, To Rollout On Cartoon Network Across Africa By January 2024

DeAPlaneta Entertainment has struck a deal with production partners CJ ENM, Million Volt Animation Studios, Tencent Video and YGG Global to become the licensing agent and distributor in Europe and Latin America for Hero Inside, a new animated super hero action-comedy series set to screen worldwide through Warner Bros. Discovery outlets.

Hero Inside animates a childhood fantasy, unlocking a world where your favorite super hero can appear before you just by saying their name. The adventure begins after Scott, a cartoonist and free spirit, mysteriously vanishes after drawing 100 superheroes across 100 comic books, without ever publishing. His proofread books scattered across San Francisco, triggering odd occurrences. Mike, a 13-year-old boy, stumbles upon one of Scott’s books, Crying Man. When he casually says the hero’s name; Crying Man jumps out from the book, and his life changes completely. Other quirky heroes showcased in the series include Black Knight, Great Finger, Mummy Girl, Mr. Justice, Lucky and Sparkules.

The first season (11 x 13′) premiers in Latin America in November, following its market triumph in October as the third most-watched series by international buyers at MIPJunior 2023, out of 600-plus titles. Warner Bros. Discovery, which has commissioned the first two seasons of Hero Inside, plans to broadcast the series across multiple Latin American countries. From 2023 to 2024, the series will roll out across diverse territories including Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia, U.S.A. and Canada. Season 2 is already in production.

“The ultimate goal for Hero Inside is to become an iconic global superhero brand,” noted series director Joo-gong Meang, Founder & CEO of Million Volt.  We plan to expand the universe of ‘Hero Inside’ beyond the animated series into feature films, spin-offs, games, comic books, and a range of products beloved by kids and audiences alike.”

Jong-min Yi, head of IP development for CJ ENM, added, “We deeply believe in excellency of the Million Volt’s crew and most of all, director Meang Joo-gong, who has already proven himself as a competitive director worldwide. We look forward to showing unique and creative characters and attractive stories of Hero Inside to more global audiences and we are a million percent sure that they will love it.”

Serving as Master Licensing Agent aside from Media and Digital Distribution Partner, DeAPlaneta Entertainment will work hand in hand with Warner Bros. Discovery to ensure an optimal launch for Hero Inside across LatAm and Europe.

“At DeaPlaneta Entertainment we know how difficult it is to find IPs capable of attracting a universal audience, whether in America, Europe or Asia,” said Diego Ibáñez Belaustegui, Chief Brand Officer of DeAPlaneta Entertainment. “Hero Inside, with its spectacular animation and its very human superheroes, achieves it thanks to a provocative proposal of frantic action that grabs you episode by episode.”

Analysis: Could eMedia Investments Or StarTimes Revive ITV Choice And tvN?

ITV Choice was a British based entertainment channel operated by ITV Studios that offered a mixture of reality, lifestyle and drama series. Some of the content included on the channel were Coronation Street, Emmerdale, The Jonathan Ross Show and Doc Martin.

The channel was phased out from the DStv platform by June 2020 and with no outlet to continue watching the channel consumers had to rely on BritBox for further content or view the little remains of ITV (Tipping Point and The Chase) on BBC and M-Net.

tvN was added to the pay-tv platform as a pop-up channel featuring various content from South Korea such as The K-2, Tails Of The Nine Tailed, Another Miss Oh, Cheese In The Trap and Tunnel. Despite being a popular addition, MultiChoice went against the idea of a full-time channel.

Since then, the Korean entertainment channel had been looking to continue on another platform and surveyed several fans even got a petition in the hopes to return on DStv but since then there had been no updates with consumers fleeing to Netflix and YouTube to view the offering.

Although, tvN is not viewable on DStv some of its programming such as Ice Adonis and Doom At Your Service had been scooped up by eMedia Investments to build the primetime offering for both their linear and digital platforms. It kind of led some to wonder if the red brand could eventually source out tvN.

With tvN not regarded as a cheapo addition, the channel would likely fall under eMedia Investments' pay tier, Ultraview. Thanks to the existing Asian offering seen on Openview, consumers would be able to familiarise themselves with the channel's programming.

I mean the idea of eMedia Investments pursing tvN or something similar for Openview consumers wouldn't seem far fetched .Prior to Zee One even Star Life's induction, eMedia Investments had broadcast several Bollywood dramas through eExtra with some help from Glow TV.

Unlike tvN, ITV Choice would likely have to come in a form taken over by Zee One or The Home Channel+ - free-to-view. eMedia Investments hasn't added any incentives to this offering and the only option BBC UKTV was ripped away from them by MultiChoice's DStv.

This ITV managed brand would make up for the loss of BBC UKTV and also be it's first official competitor seeing as they both cater to low income households unlike BBC Brit which is mid tier. This channel would have to reintroduce shows some of which aren't on DStv to new consumers.

The Korean Entertainment Giant CJ ENM Produces Content For All Audiences

The Cannes entry Broker represents one of the more curious collaborations in this year’s competition lineup. The film is directed by revered Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda, but the entire cast is Korean and the action takes place in modern-day Seoul. While it’s yet to be revealed why Kore-eda chose to set his latest drama in Korea, the decision by Korean entertainment giant CJ ENM to distribute the film is far less opaque.

“We decided to participate, thinking that by utilizing CJ’s experience in the global market we could help promote an interesting project — ‘a Korean film made by a Japanese master,’ ” says Jerry Ko, head of the international film business division at CJ ENM.

Broker isn’t the only CJ film in this year’s competition. Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave, starring Tang Wei, will also compete for the Palme d’Or, marking the latest coup by CJ after Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite took home the fest’s top honor three years ago. Well before the success of Parasite, CJ had established a reputation for championing daring, boundary-pushing directors who had not yet achieved mainstream success — including Bong and Park, both of whom found a home at CJ early in their careers with titles like 2009’s Mother and 2000’s Joint Security Area, respectively.

“Ever since CJ started its culture business in the mid-1990s, it has continued to invest in creating an ecosystem that allows the market to produce high-quality content,” says Ko, who oversees the company’s global strategy. “While discovering talented creators and continuously supporting their work, we pushed our business forward in the direction of revitalizing the market by creating a healthy cycle in which the demand and supply could expand both in quality and in number. Although we may not have achieved short-term gains, in the long term CJ and Korean content managed to establish a foundation for global competitiveness. Films like Parasite are the fruit of those efforts.”

Indeed, CJ ENM’s presence as a global film behemoth is the result of a years-long mission to expand and diversify. Just in the past few years, the company has undergone a visible transformation. In November 2021, the company announced it had acquired an 80 percent stake of the scripted business of Endeavor Content for $785 million. That acquisition was the company’s largest since investing in DreamWorks SKG in 1995, and the partnership is expected to serve as a gateway for Asian artists, writers and directors to enter the global market. And in December of the same year, the company also entered into a strategic partnership with Paramount Global, in a worldwide deal that includes co-productions for original series and films, content licensing and distribution through streaming services. The two companies will co-finance an original series, the sci-fi drama Yonder from veteran Korean director Lee Joonik, which is set to be released on TVING, the company’s streaming service, and Paramount+ globally.

And that’s not the company’s only connection to Hollywood. In addition to the TV adaptation of Bong’s 2013 hit Snowpiercer on TNT, CJ is currently co-producing more than 10 other projects, including an English-language remake of the hit film Miss Granny that has already been produced and released in eight countries/regions; Extreme Job, a comedy being produced with Universal Pictures; a U.S adaptation of the hit Korean drama series Hotel Del Luna, with David Ellison’s Skydance; the original U.S series The Big Door Prize for Apple TV+; and HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Parasite. Elsewhere, CJ’s music show I Can See Your Voice has been broadcast or remade in more than 23 markets.

In short, CJ has managed to help take Korean content mainstream in the U.S. — no small feat considering the language barrier and potentially daunting cultural differences.

“In Asia, especially Southeast Asia, actors’ name value or local response of dramas and films among the Korean audience are almost thoroughly delivered as they are,” says Senior VP of content business Seo Jang-ho. “In the U.S., however, there was only a niche market for teenage fans of K-pop and romantic comedy. But now, with the success of Parasite and Squid Game through Netflix, the scope of popular Korean content has expanded, making the fanbase much wider.”

Locally, the company is strengthening its own production line by acquiring some of the country’s leading production companies, including Moho Film, founded by Park, and JK Film, founded by director JK Youn, best known for domestic blockbusters like 2014’s Ode to My Father and 2009’s Tidal Wave. It also announced a plan to launch a new production studio, CJ ENM STUDIOS, which will focus on producing content for global streaming services. The studio is an addition to its existing production powerhouse Studio Dragon, which already is responsible for more than 40 percent of domestic broadcasting content exported overseas with local hits like Crash Landing on You, one of the highest-rated local TV shows of all time, and It’s Okay Not to Be Okay, both of which were acquired by Netflix.

“With the addition of CJ ENM STUDIOS, the company plans to establish a strong multi-studio structure that will strengthen its global content production capacity and global competitiveness, especially at a time when K-content is in high demand,” says an official within CJ ENM. “Each studio will have its area of expertise.”

One of the company’s latest successes is TVING, a global streaming platform to export content. The company’s partnership with Paramount Global to co-finance the platform’s original series Yonder is an example. Through the partnership, Paramount+ will also make its first entry into the Asian market through TVING.

With so much co-production activity, it would be easy to assume that CJ is approaching the limit on how much expansion it can pursue, but Seo argues that, as long as Korean content continues to be popular around the world, there are plenty of opportunities still on the horizon.

“I think there will be many of these multicultural projects in the days to come,” he says. “To that extent, we’re really seeing that the borders of content are diminishing, and I feel that the quality and value of the work itself has become much more important than in the past.”

Rumoured: tvN Africa Is Making A Comeback

tvN is a South Korean entertainment channel operated by CJ ENM. While its rival SBS focuses more on long form series (telenovelas) which can  be viewed in South Africa on eExtra, tvN on the other hand works on short series.

tvN ran as a pop-up channel on DStv in March 2021 offering drama series such as Another Miss Oh, 100 Days My Prince, The Crowned Clown and Cheese In The Trap alongside variety shows such as Player 7 and You Quiz On The Block.

Ever since the channel went off air its media accounts primarily Facebook remain active in the hopes to become a linear service once again as the content was folded under MultiChoice's new streaming service, Showmax.

tvN started an online petition several months ago and it looks like there's an update to that as the brand asked consumers names of platforms they rely on for all their entertainment.

It could be imply two things 1) the petition worked out and MultiChoice had a change of heart 2) the petition had no effect and the brand will resurface on a rival platform.

How tvN Africa permanent feed might look?
Unlike Korea, tvN Africa ran their programs in a weekday format with some exceptions like variety shows and that will likely continue in this permanent feed. Programs formerly seen on the pop-up will likely be added to the lineup.

Last year, tvN put up a list of potential kdramas and variety shows which might join the lineup as well. tvN is not another Telemundo or Zee World which opens up the possibility of seeing more content from CJ ENM.

Aside from tvN originals, the channel had been supplying content from OCN perhaps this permanent version will see them source their offering from more brands like Mnet the music channel.

After 14 Years, FX Returns To South Africa + e.tv Fills The Decks With More Repeats + tvN Expands Their Offering With A Music Channel

FX returns to Africa after 14 years

Disney has announced that FX is now being classed as its own global brand across Television, Hulu, Star+ and on Disney+ internationally.

Now all FX content — original to streaming or second window to cable — will be organized in an “FX” section on any Disney streaming platform inside and outside of the U.S.

The change has come into effect and will include new original scripted content, in addition to any library titles from FX., which currently contains more than 170 seasons and 1800 episodes of television.

In a statement, FX’s John Landgraf said:

“We realized a decade ago that FX would soon no longer be primarily a location, but a rather branded mark of quality that would travel across multiple distribution platforms. For 20 years, we have worked tirelessly to make the FX mark synonymous to the consumer with original programming that is distinctive and excellent as well as entertaining. This change furthers the natural evolution of FX and we are grateful to the company and our partners at DMED for their belief and investment in FX branded programming. We are confident that the FX brand, wherever the consumer finds it, will continue to deliver the highest quality programs any service has to offer.”

In the statement, Rebecca Campbell, chairman of Disney’s direct to consumer and international said:

“With more than a billion hours of FX programming viewed on Hulu since the launch of the FX hub, we’ve further cemented Hulu as the home for stories that impact culture, inspire conversation, and connect with viewers in meaningful ways and we’re excited to see the brand evolve to connect with international audiences on Disney+ and Star+. FX’s award-winning adult programming is vital to our services both domestically and internationally and we want to shine a brighter light on the brand within our excellent and rapidly growing portfolio of general entertainment programming for adult audiences.”

FX is going to continue to double down on creating new original programming, with a target of 30 shows (25 scripted and five unscripted) in 2022. Many of which will be exclusive to Hulu and internationally on Disney+.

Alert: e.tv makes a U-turn

As eMedia set of channels except eToonz for some reason gear up for the big day. It's become a tradition for them as well as several brands across the world to halt their primetime selection as several viewers are on holiday.

While other channels continue regular viewing e.tv on the other hand will make several adjustments:

• Deur Dik En Dun is set to conclude on the 23rd of December and on the final days. The show is set to start an hour early (16:45) replacing Days Of Our Lives.
• Movies are set to replace the Deur Dik En Dun as viewers gear up for the launch of Droom Velore on 10th of January.
• S.W.A.T. concludes 21st of December with Beat Shazam, The Big Bang Theory and movies taking up 20:30 - 23:00. Imbewu is not affected by the changes.
• Mzansi Magic's Our Perfect Wedding replaces Ultimate Braai Master at 18:00 everyday Saturday from 8th of January.

tvN becomes a music channel

tvN's parent company in Asia expanded their set of channels earlier this month with a dedicated Korean music channel, tvN Music while is likely home to acts such as BTS, Twice and BLACKPINK.

Earlier in the year, tvN made their debut on DStv as a pop-up channel and featured a selection of Korean content ranging from drama series to reality shows.

Despite only existing as a pop-up, the brand managed to attract an array of fans. Should it return one would hope to see more variety not that there was anything with wrong with this version.

More linear channels have extended their primetime offering to weekends. With that in mind perhaps they could slot in tvN Music alongside tvN Movies. Let's face it repeats are not a necessity on top of not getting high ratings so all this would benefit the channel in the long run.

You can find me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

tvN's Parent Company CJ ENM Joins The Anime Business As They Partner Up With Toei Animation

Korean entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM has entered into a strategic partnership with leading Japanese animation studio Toei Animation as it continues to expand its global footprint. Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate across both their libraries and team to create new product including television series, films and animation. The tie-up will also allow both to tap each other’s regional markets.

CJ ENM is is Korea’s foremost film and television studio, cable operator and music producer. Best known for multiple Oscar winner Parasite, the company’s film credits also include Snowpiercer and Miss Granny. Series credits range from Crash Landing On You to Goblin: The Lonely And Great God and Hospital Playlist while it is also behind music format I Can See Your Voice; stage credits include the Tony Award winning Broadway production Kinky Boots.

CJ further has a strategic investment in David Ellison’s Skydance Media and is currently co-producing a drama series with the U.S.-based company. It is also involved in the production of the TV-adaptation of Parasite with HBO.

The company has been on a global expansion push over the past year looking to form partnerships with content creators in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Toei has produced numerous series including the Dragon Ball Z and One Piece franchises as well as Galaxy Express 999 and Sailor Moon. Its library numbers 13,100 episodes, including 255 feature films and 288 television series.

The two partners will now work closely to co-produce premium content that appeals to a global audience, be it new projects or those based on existing IP. They have formed a task-force with creatives from both sides to accelerate production.

“Toei Animation’s IP has great potential for transmedia or cross-media storytelling, as they have an existing strong global fandom and appeals to a wide range of age groups. We are also excited to see how CJ ENM’s original content that expands over 5,000 different IPs will be able open new doors of creative possibilities for Toei Animation,” said Jongmin Yi, Senior Vice President of CJ ENM’s Content R&D Center. “Through this strategic partnership, we plan to develop never-seen-before transmedia contents in both Korea and Japan.”

Added Takashi Washio, Executive Officer and Executive Producer of Production Department at Toei Animation, “We look forward to working with CJ ENM, a company that has been recognized for its borderless content and its influence in shaping some of the new trends in the global media entertainment landscape. Combined with Toei Animation’s know-hows from a wealth of experience and accomplishments in producing global animation hits, we are confident that the two companies will be able to create synergy to create global mega-hit contents.”

CJ ENM currently has a content agreement with MultiChoice's Showmax for their K-Dramas and they are pushing to get DStv to bring back tvN.

Updated 19 July: tvN Is Working On Becoming A Permanent Channel Following It's Closure On DStv

tvN is the third pop-up channel to exit DStv following ZooMoo and Timeless Dizi Channel's exit back in June and March respectively with TLNovelas scheduled to close in August where a new program will be allocated.

tvN has put up a channel termination on the EPG informing viewers that channel will stop airing by the end of July and thanking viewers for their support. This came after the channel was extended for a month.

Even though the channel will stop airing on DStv. CJ ENM has expressed interest in bringing back it full-time with the brand unveiling a batch of programs they had hoped to show viewers but that's not happening or at least not on DStv. Could it be possible that StarTimes (StarSat) will pick it up?

MultiChoice has host several pop-ups that are permanent on StarTimes such as WarnerMedia's Toonami, Televisa's TLNovelas and SPI International's Dizi with Blue Ant Media's ZooMoo being a permanent fixture on Zuku TV.

Timeless Dizi Channel started from scratch on StarTimes when the pop-up was terminated on DStv so if tvN had to become a permanent fixture there I'd expect them go the same route thereafter new content will be added.

There's chances that the content on tvN will still be available on Showmax. The streaming service already distributes content from other parties which had a platform on DStv ranging from Adult Swim, ITV Choice and OUTtv.

Update: The channel termination banner is removed it looks like some good news is coming and it also looks like Multichoice will be relaunching some pop-up channels.

Update On The 3 Pop-Up Channels On DStv

MultiChoice currently has 3 pop-up channels operating on the platform with the 4th which is on StarTimes being disqualified earlier in the year. These remaining channels could be permanent additions at the same time it could be the end.

ZooMoo is calling it quits on DStv as the channel is scheduled to close by the end of June after its 3 month extension. MultiChoice has sent a channel termination notice onto viewer's screens. If they reconsider its best to place it on a much cheaper package so that it can gain more awareness.

tvN is the now the second pop-up channel to recieve an extension on DStv unlike ZooMoo it's staying for only a month. They've unveiled a bunch of shows coming to the channel the one I'd look out for next month is Memorist, Tomorrow With You, Mr. Queen and The Sixth Sense.

TLNovelas is currently the longest pop-up channel on DStv launching in September of last year with its demise scheduled for August. There's a bunch of titles to look forward to on the channel including Secrets At The Hotel and Single Dad's Club. To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if they kept it. There hasn't been a lot of new channels this year.

Dizi is safely tucked on StarTimes after its dramatic removal from DStv. The feed currently seen on StarTimes somehow got the DStv feed meaning all shows are repeats until the end of August or September giving MultiChoice enough time to pick it up. (Note that I updated the info on the link about Dizi's termination on DStv)

Updated (18/06): tvN Might Have Gotten An Extended Vacation On DStv

tvN launched in March on DStv channel 134 after failing to launch November of last year as promised in DStv's upfront and is expected to continue operating until June 20th at least that's what MultiChoice stated earlier.

tvN Africa posted a photo online asking fans which shows they like to see "this year".  Now read the inverted part didn't they say it would close later in June.

It's possible MultiChoice and the owners of the brand CJ ENM reached a new agreement giving the channel either a permanent or extended vacation.

Why else would the channel ask such questions and put these 8 shows in particular if there's no reason to it really.

If tvN does happen to be a permanent addition it will be the first out of the four pop-up channels advertised in DStv's upfront.

After all Timeless Dizi Channel was the first to be axed despite the massive followers and ZooMoo which was scheduled to close in March got extended until the end of June leaving TLNovelas as the only undecided channel.

July on tvN:

These shows are set to air during the extended period:

Mr. Queen, based on the original Chinese web drama Go Princess Go, the series is about a man named Bong-hwan from the modern age, being trapped in the body of Queen Cheorin in the Joseon era.

Sixth Sense, in each episode, the cast members, together with a male guest (known as the Sixth Man), visit three different places (or people) of hot issue.

Memorist, with the power to read people's memories, Dong Baek solves crimes as a detective in the police force. When a string of serial murders happen, Dong Baek teams up with talented criminal profiler Han Sun-mi to stop the killer and prevent further deaths.

Tomorrow With You, the story revolves around Yoo So-joon, a CEO of a real estate company, who has the ability to travel through time via a subway; and his wife, Song Ma-rin, who works as an amateur photographer.

tvN has been extended until the end of July.

ZooMoo Has Been Extended On DStv + Other Controversies Regarding The Current Pop-Up Channels

Back in August 2020, MultiChoice previewed 4 pop-up channels + 1 full-time channel which were TLNovelas (Mexican telenovelas, September), TDC (Turkish telenovelas, November), tvN (K-dramas, November) and ZooMoo (preschoolers, November) + KIX (Action movie channel, October).

All were suppose to launch within that year but for some reason tvN didn't make the deadline. They only popped up a year later through a Facebook post without any explanation from them or MultiChoice on why they didn't fill the end of their bargain.

Maybe MultiChoice wanted to put more focus towards TDC since they were gonna launch together. They couldn't do December since less people will be glued to their screens, January everyone is up in arms, February was occupied leaving March open.

tvN is the first channel that doesn't offer a ton of dubbed programming for English viewers. Will we ever know why this one is unscathed while others are put out of their misery.

TLNovelas has the longest promotional period amongst all of them. Ever since it's launch there's been technical difficulties (in South Africa) for which DStv is seemingly taking a while to resolve and this will just leave the channel without potential consumers.

ZooMoo which was suppose to end in March 2021 alongside TDC has been extended until June which is the same time tvN promotional run ends. It's obvious MultiChoice doesn't monitor performances entirely through viewership.

Timeless Dizi Channel (TDC) makes a ton of last minute changes which doesn't reflect their schedule. They went from using an outdated schedule to airing marathons without notice. Imagine, recording an episode only to realise this issue exists. This channel is set to close by the end of March.

In the end, ZooMoo is the only channel that hasn't stirred up problems for viewers.
