Despite an 11% decline in June’s movie market ratings, TNT, the home of Hollywood blockbusters, ranked #1 ahead of all movie channels in South Africa. Regardless of the overall decreasing trend, TNT saw a notable 22% increase in viewership during weekend daytime programming driven by the two best-performing movies on the channel for the month, Karate Kid and 3 Ninjas. TNT dominated the Top 50 competitive movies in June, securing 15 titles in the Top 50 with films such as Panic Room, Anaconda and The Mask. The channel also garnered historical viewership numbers in May for the premiere of Apocalypto, directed by Mel Gibson, reaching 1 million viewers. TNT recently launched its long-form slate of TNT Original Movies, which kicked off with Escape from Pretoria on the 4th of July during prime time. MultiChoice has announced that it will discontinue its BBC First channel on DStv, effective from 1 September. The company said that this change is part of a “refresh of its British entertainment lineup”, with a selection of the British drama continuing on BBC Brit. “Customers can continue to enjoy an increased range of British content on DStv’s suite of popular BBC channels as well as on M-Net, Catch Up, and Showmax,” the company said. British shows that will continue include The Chase S13, Love Island UK S6, Britain’s Got Talent S14, The Bay S1, and The Capture. “We are putting compelling drama and variety in one place and on one BBC channel and have increased acquisition of British content by adding titles to M-Net,” said MultiChoice Group CEO Yolisa Phahle. “This will reduce the repeats on M-Net and strengthen our daytime schedule.” In addition to this channel cut, MultiChoice also announced that M-Net’s first daily drama in more than 10 years – Legacy –

During the pandemic, DStv has been trying to keep the entertained and educated at the same time and that has proven to be a major bust on some viewers angle. They recently added the German-based educational channel Da Vinci Kids and Mindset's Pop Primary. So far those channels are getting good reviews since their educational and that's where most of the applause is coming from. MultiChoice has also invested locally with several other markets launching a regional educational channel. There's SABC Education for South Africa, Edu TV for Kenya, ZNBC Education for Zambia and Ghana Learning for Ghana. If you look at all these brands owners they offer a ton of propaganda but as long as they're trying to keep kids educated some will give it a pass. This thinking has driven SuperSport's decision to drop the numbering system it has used for its channels for more than two decades, replacing them with channels themed around individual sports to ensure it is easier for viewers to find their favourite sports. From September 1, SuperSport viewers on DStv will be able to enjoy special dedicated channels for leagues and sports, among them the PSL, the Premier League, La Liga, rugby, cricket, golf, tennis, motorsport and several others, which will now have a home to call their own. Telemundo is set to air another telenovela in partnership with FOX Telecolombia with the first being The Way To Paradise (Sin Seños Si Hay Paraíso). Operation Pacific(Operacíon Pacifico) revolves around Amalia Ortega (Majida Issa), a leading and brilliant federal agent of the secret investigation unit of the National Police that has the mission and personal objective of capturing El Guapo, one of the last drug traffickers on the northern border of Mexico. BBC World News is the 1st victim from the eMedia platform to get the chop on OpenView without no explanation from e.tv or better yet any notice for their loyal viewers. BBC World News lasted about two years and 7 months on the OpenView platform with the cheap France24 taking up it's space on channel 121. France 24 is a French state-owned international news television network based in Paris. Its channels broadcast in French, English, Arabic, and Spanish and are aimed at the overseas market, similar to BBC World News, DW, RT and TRT World. The channel ran as a programming block on e.tv News and Sports channels before becoming a full-length channel on the platform unexpectedly. There's no reason behind the sudden removal of BBC World News. It's more likely due to costs and with the pandemic around a lot of businesses have been cutting back so this might be one of them.
