Showmax: The End Result For HONEY TV

HONEY was Africa's first Pan-African lifestyle channel operated by Via's Media24 home to locally produced shows like 7 Colours and Yes, I Have HIV. It was also outsourcing content from M-Net like Date My Family and Our Perfect Wedding.

A few months ago, MultiChoice inline with their entertainment offering opted to discontinue the channel across Africa after a two year run alongside other locally produced brands during the year such as Maisha Magic Movies, Novela Magic and ROK GH.

From what everyone could make from all this, several content that was produced specifically for HONEY would fall with the channel while others would resurface another platform i.e. Showmax or Mzansi Magic as Media24 is still producing regional content.

The only problem would be the geography as a show like Date My Family Kenya would only be exclusive to consumers in Eastern Africa. It might have a following in Southern Africa but isn't viewable on neither DStv and Showmax making consumers feel left out.

Maybe HONEY's termination falls inline with some of the recent additions like Zee Zonke and Play Room. MultiChoice is probably trying to prioritise the regional line-up as that is proven to have a bigger effect while as continuing to source out content from the African region.

Recap To The Month: Consumers Seek The Help Of A Rival Platform For The Soon To Be Axed HONEY On DStv

During the week, it was reported that HONEY would be shutting down on DStv by the end of October and this comes after its disappearance from some parts of Africa on GOtv in August. With consumers curious on the fate of shows like 7 Colours, Making The Menu and The Buzz.

As mentioned, several shows from HONEY could resurface on various local channels from M-Net alongside Moja Love. A majority could end up dying out alongside the channel while other shows like Yes, I Have HIV Zambia could be restricted to only Zambezi Magic.

Similar to Novela Magic, consumers will be missing out on programming that is if no plan is set to motion to supplement this offering. Following the cancellation of HONEY, consumers have requested the help of another platform in order to keep the spark alive.

Even if an option was available (e.g. StarSat), they may not have the financial means to sustain it and another dealing with the content. Since it was technically funded by DStv, they have as much right to the content as Media24 meaning StarSat would need to find other content.

Although HONEY would end its run on DStv by the end of October with no replacement on the cards. Consumers can find a variety of entertaining shows on BBC Lifestyle (channel 174), Food Network (channel 175), TLC (channel 135) and Real Time (channel 155).

Channel Termination: HONEY To Go Dark On DStv From 31 October 2023

HONEY was Africa's first Pan-African lifestyle channel operated by Media24 who also manage the Afrikaans brand, Via. Catering to most parts of Africa in which MultiChoice operate would offer bold and unscripted content that could connect with Africans.

Some of the shows to have been viewed on the channel include Yes, I Have HIV, Making The Menu and What's Wrong With Me? alongside M-Net productions like Our Perfect Wedding and Date My Family.

After a 3 year run, MultiChoice decided to axe the lifestyle channel with viewers only getting word on the termination through the programme guide. They don't provide any detail regarding the sudden cancellation only that it would bow out from 31 October 2023.

The termination of HONEY coincide with Novela Magic and Maisha Magic Movies all of which were tailored to African audiences. If one had to guess, HONEY struggled to garner traction and similar to these two MultiChoice went as far as bundling these channels to Access.

It's likely that these changes will be applicable to consumers only in South Africa and overtime more markets will follow. This would have to do with the original productions produced on HONEY which we assume Mzansi Magic and Moja Love will pick up for their brands.

Although there has been no word on a replacement, MultiChoice had begun production on another local channel likely a sister channel to Zambezi Magic. Should it launch in South Africa, it might be added to the same consumers that viewed HONEY being Access consumers.

Another channel in which the pay-tv company is set to launch in the coming months is Play Room. A children's channel which looks to combine fun and learning with popular animated series like CoComelon in Zulu alongside live-action shows like Game Shakers.

Roundups #94: Wind In The Willows Adaptation Coming Soon To Cartoonito, Hocus Pocus Streaming September 30th On Disney+ And The Real Housewives Expands To Nairobi And Pretoria

More preschool coming soon to Cartoonito

Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA has acquired London-based HoHo Entertainment’s preschool series Toad and Friends, which is based on Kenneth Grahame’s kidlit classic The Wind in the Willows.

The CG animated series (52 x 11 minutes) spins new riverside adventures for book characters Mole, Ratty and Toad, focusing on the value of community, friendship and respect. It’s set to launch in 2023 in Warner Bros. Discovery’s Cartoonito block across the EMEA region, as well as on HBO Max’s European service.

Toad and Friends is animated by Scotland’s Wild Child Animation and directed by Tim Searle (Danger Mouse). Creative Scotland and the European Union’s MEDIA program also participated in the show’s development.

Hocus Pocus 2 streaming this month on Disney+

The trailer and teaser art for the highly anticipated Disney+ Original movie Hocus Pocus 2, reuniting Disney Legend Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, were released today. The live-action, long awaited sequel to the perennial Halloween classic, which brings back the delightfully wicked Sanderson sisters for more comedic mayhem, will debut on Disney+ on September 30.

It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th century sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.

Hocus Pocus 2 also stars Sam Richardson, Doug Jones, Hannah Waddingham, Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, Lilia Buckingham, Froyan Gutierrez, and Tony Hale. The film is directed by Anne Fletcher and produced by Lynn Harris, with Ralph Winter, David Kirschner, and Adam Shankman serving as executive producers.

Next month filming will start on The Real Housewives of Nairobi produced by Young Rich Television, reports Variety. DStv subscribers in East Africa will get their first version set in Kenya, following The Real Housewives of Lagos, which made its debut on Showmax in Nigeria earlier this year.

"We are so proud to build on the continued success of The Real Housewives franchises across Africa," says Ana Langenberg, senior vice president for format sales and productions at NBCUniversal Formats.
