Why eXposed Was Silently Rebranded To eSeries On Openview?

eXposed (now eSeries) is a free-to-air TV channel operated by eMedia Investments that launched in 2022 offering a variety of international content from dramas like Hudson & Rex, The Walking Dead and House Of Cards to reality like Dark Side Of The Ring and F**k That's Delicious.

The channel was launched in place of Rewind and was also used to supplement or package the international lineup formerly viewed on e.tv as the brand looks to boost their local and streaming endeavours.

It is basically a mashup/competitor of several DStv channels particularly premium brands like M-Net, 1Magic, Universal and Comedy Central while as supplying content from tvN, Vice TV and Lifetime.

During the month, eMedia Investments' silently renamed the channel to eSeries after a year on air. In which eMedia had stated would offer a “unmatched, dramatic rollercoaster ride” with international series across multiple genres making top-rated content available on Openview.

Of course, details surrounding the rebrand remains a mystery if one had to guess it probably has to do with the recent change in programming as Bollywood shows formerly seen on eExtra such as Surrender In Love is now on eSeries another is the lack of edgy series.

eXposed was being built up as another M-Net Edge/City which featured a lot of edgier shows like Doom At Your Service, Billions and Why Women Kill. Overtime, that part of the channel probably subsided as there's was not much content to retain that part of the brand.

Henceforth, the switch from eXposed to eSeries.

Magnum Pi Cancelled On NBC

The Jay Hernandez-led reboot of the 1980s procedural will wrap its run with its upcoming 10 episodes on NBC. The news comes as the options on the cast were due to expire June 30, forcing NBC — whose studio sibling Universal TV co-produces the series alongside CBS Studios — to make a decision on either extending those deals or wrapping up the show. The network, which has recently passed on a number of pilots and canceled nearly all of its bubble shows, opted to let the show conclude with its remaining 10 episodes rather than to spend the money to extend the show’s stars as it’s unclear when production will resume amid the ongoing Writers Guild strike.

Magnum P.I. was canceled in May 2022 after four seasons on CBS. The series ranked as one of the highest shows on broadcast television at the time of its cancellation, prompting NBC to step in and save the show from cancellation with a two-season, 20-episode pickup less than two months later.

NBC is calling the 20-episode order a split season, a loophole that allows networks, studios and streamers to avoid giving cast, creators and crew annual salary increases in a practice that has been widely used by basic cable networks and streamers.

Eric Guggenheim serves as showrunner and exec produces alongside Justin Lin, John Davis and John Fox. Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang and Amy Hill round out the cast of the series, which streams in-season on Showmax and otherwise on Paramount+.

Recap To Last Year: eXposed Becomes The Premier Destination For The Best International Series

eXposed is a general entertainment channel operated by eMedia Investments that broadcasts a mixture of reality shows, drama series and documentaries. Some of the content available on the channel include The Walking Dead, Flower Of Evil and Empire.

The channel was added as a replacement to eReality and over the past year a supplement to the former international content viewed on e.tv. I mean the channel kind of resembles the main channel in a lot of aspects they offer the best of eReality and eExtra.

Prior to those two channels rollout on Openview, most of their content was seen on e.tv at the time and as these channels became a household name that only left an empty void on the main channel with a portion of their channel bombarded with their repeats.

In the later parts of 2010, e.tv was the Bop TV of our generation featuring shows like Family Feud, Fear Factor, NCIS: Los Angeles and The Resident. Fast forward to 2023, the latter can only be viewed through Openview with selected content distributed by M-Net on DStv.

Most of which isn't on a platform like DStv Access and Easyview. SABC 3 (stylised as S3) is another hub to relive those days with shows like The Good Doctor, Killing Eve and El Capo. Sure these are different programs but it does make a good successor.

If I had to sum up the issue with international on e.tv, MultiChoice and SABC have been in the local game since inception and eMedia Investments is trying to build on that so instead of erasing e.tv's entire existence we have channels like eXposed keeping the magic alive.

Vice, Home To Dark Side Of The Ring And F**k That's Delicious On eXposed Files For Bankruptcy

Vice Media filed for bankruptcy on Monday, punctuating a yearslong descent from a new-media darling to a cautionary tale of the problems facing the digital publishing industry.

The bankruptcy will not interrupt daily operations for Vice’s businesses, which in addition to its flagship website include the ad agency Virtue, the Pulse Films division and Refinery29, a women-focused site acquired by Vice in 2019.

A group of Vice’s lenders, including Fortress Investment Group and Soros Fund Management, is in the leading position to acquire the company out of bankruptcy. The group has submitted a bid of $225 million, which would be covered by its existing loans to the company. It would also take over “significant liabilities” from Vice after any deal closes.

A sale process follows next. The lenders have secured a $20 million loan to continue operating Vice and then, if a better bid does not emerge, the group that includes Fortress and Soros will acquire Vice.

Still, the dreams that Vice executives once had of a stock market debut or a sale at an eye-popping valuation have been wiped away. The company was considered to be worth $5.7 billion at one point.

Investments from media titans like Disney and shrewd financial investors like TPG, which spent hundreds of millions of dollars, will be rendered worthless by the bankruptcy, cementing Vice’s status among the most notable bad bets in the media industry.

Like some of its peers in the digital-media industry, including BuzzFeed and Vox Media, Vice and its investors bet big on the rising power of social media networks like Facebook and Instagram, anticipating they would deliver a tide of young, upwardly mobile readers that advertisers craved.

Though readers came by the millions, new media companies had trouble wringing profits from them, and the bulk of digital ad dollars went to the major tech platforms. Last month, BuzzFeed shut down its namesake Pulitzer Prize-winning news division after going public at a small fraction of its earlier valuation, and Vox Media earlier this year raised money at roughly half its 2015 valuation.

“There are definitely commonalities in the hardships media organizations have been facing and Vice is no exception,” said S. Mitra Kalita, the founder and publisher of Epicenter-NYC, a community journalism company based in Queens. “We now know that a brand tethered to social media for its growth and audience alone is not sustainable.”

Bankruptcy records filed Monday show that Vice is made up of a web of companies associated with its various businesses, including Pulse Films and Carrot Creative, an ad agency. The filings say Vice has outstanding debt of $834 million, dwarfing the amount Vice was recently in talks to sell for.

They also show Vice owes some of its biggest business partners millions of dollars. The company said it owed Wipro, an information technology firm, nearly $10 million. Justin Stefano, one of the co-founders of Refinery29, is owed more than $500,000, according to the filings. And Davis Wright Tremaine, a law firm that has represented Vice, has a claim of more than $300,000.

The bankruptcy filing will give the company some relief from its onerous debt load as its lenders, including Fortress, seek to salvage their investments. Vice Media raised a $250 million loan from Fortress and Soros Fund Management in 2019 as it struggled to make a profit. It has been in default on that loan for months. “It’s the lender coming in and saying, ‘I’m done funding the losses — if I’m going to fund the losses, I’m going to take control of the company,” said Eric Snyder, chairman of bankruptcy at the law firm Wilk Auslander. “It’s not unusual for the lender to come in and tell the debtor, the borrower, ‘You’re putting this into bankruptcy, you’re going to make a motion to sell, we’re going to put in a first bid.’”

Fortress sees a continuing role at Vice for Shane Smith, the brash co-founder who became synonymous with the company’s gonzo journalism from exotic locales and oversaw a boundary-pushing culture that was rife with allegations of sexual harassment, according to a person familiar with the matter. Hozefa Lokhandwala and Bruce Dixon, co-chief executives at Vice, will also stay on.

According to the terms of Vice’s bankruptcy loan, the company has 55 days to complete a sale. In documents filed with the bankruptcy court, Vice said that the timeline to sale, “while tight,” is necessary “to best position the company to survive as a going concern.”

In a statement, Mr. Dixon and Mr. Lokhandwala said that the bankruptcy sale would ultimately “strengthen the company.”

“We look forward to completing the sale process in the next two to three months and charting a healthy and successful next chapter at Vice.”
The bankruptcy is a moment of humility for Vice, which a decade ago appeared destined to sell for an eye-watering sum or make its debut on the public markets. In the 2010s, Vice raised piles of money from traditional media companies, which it had assailed for growing complacent. The company sold advertisers and investors on its ability to reach young millennials who were hungry for an alternative to its corporate rivals, delivering you-are-there dispatches from North Korea and Liberia without the decorum of the mainstream news media.

Shane Smith, left, with the former Vice chief executive, Nancy Dubuc. Mr. Smith, the brash co-founder of Vice who became synonymous with the company’s gonzo journalism, will continue on as an adviser.

But the harsh realities of digital publishing caught up with Vice, and things went sideways. In 2017, the company raised $400 million from the private equity firm TPG in a deal code-named “Project Venus” that valued the company at $5.7 billion. But the cash infusion saddled Vice with financial obligations if it didn’t hit aggressive profitability targets, and it eventually became an albatross for the company. Later that year, The New York Times and other outlets published investigations into allegations of sexual harassment at the company, kicking off a crisis at Vice that shook confidence in its management.

Mr. Smith replaced himself as chief executive of the company, appointing Nancy Dubuc — a longtime TV executive at A&E who shepherded hits like “Duck Dynasty” — to oversee the sprawling Brooklyn-based media empire. Investors hoped Ms. Dubuc would sell the company or take it public, and she made repeated attempts.
The latest took place this winter, a sales process that drew interest from several potential suitors. Antenna Group, a Greek media company that has done business with Vice before, expressed interest in acquiring it, but a deal never materialized. Ms. Dubuc left in February, with no buyer in sight and without achieving her long-stated goal of consistently turning a profit at Vice.

The situation got worse last month. The company laid off employees after Antenna stopped making payments to Vice for a production deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The cuts included employees at Vice World News, the company’s global reporting initiative, after it became clear those efforts were no longer financially viable.
Alex Detrick, a spokesman for Antenna and the former chief communications officer for Vice under Mr. Smith, declined to comment.

Ms. Kalita of Epicenter-NYC, who also co-founded URL Media — a network of media outlets owned by Black and brown people that share content and advertising — said Vice’s bankruptcy was a reminder to founders to develop many different kinds of businesses beyond just advertising.

“I think even those of us running profitable media start-ups now,” Ms. Kalita said, “are thinking more carefully about growth and making sure we can continuously define our audience and the value we represent to them.”

New Series Alert: The Walking Dead To Make Its Freemium Debut On e.tv's eXposed Channel

In 2021, The Walt Disney Company shuttered the FOX brand from across Africa as they continue to consolidate their content on Disney+. The Walking Dead was one of the highly profiled shows at the time as we had a final season of which would only be out in the following year.

But as seen already, The Walt Disney Company didn't take consumer's concerns into consideration even after drawing up petition. They ripped FOX away from households in the African market with no means for consumers to actually browse the final season.

After almost two years, The Walking Dead will be making a comeback through free-to-air platforms as eMedia Investments had picked up rights to the post-apocalyptic horror drama based on the book series of the same name by MnRobert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard.

The Walking Dead takes place after the onset of a worldwide zombie apocalypse. The zombies, referred to as "walkers", shamble towards living humans and other creatures to eat them; they are attracted to noise, such as gunshots, and to different scents, e.g. humans.

It stars Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, Melissa McBride, Scott Wilson and Michael Cudlitz.

Since it's debut on October 31, 2010, The Walking Dead has recieved positive reviews from critics. It has been nominated for several awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama and the Writers Guild of America Award for New Series.

The Walking Dead airs daily at 21:30 on eXposed channel 109 only on Openview.

Recap To Last Year: Housewives + Splintered Pieces + uMbali Have Yet To Be Seen On e.tv And eXposed

Last year, eMedia Investments scrapped most of the international offering formerly viewed through weeknights on e.tv as they try to bolster their original portfolio with the likes of The Black Door, Daryn's Gym, Is'phindiselo and Christmas Without Gogo.

As seen since eVOD's rollout, eMedia Investments has been distributing content from the platform across their channels but there's still some portions of the content that have yet to find a home which includes shows like Splintered Pieces and uMbali.

e.tv amidst this reshuffle in 2022 had sourced selected content from the streamer which include various films such as An Eye For An Eye, Surviving Gaza and Atlantis with the first notable program, Is'phindiselo.

Is'phindiselo was actually the only drama on eVOD to air it's full run on the channel and it was meant to be used for the above-mentioned shows but after films struggled in their new timeslots. eMedia Investments backtracked on the plan for these shows.

Durban Gen, Imbewu and Isono are set to be ending on the network and it doesn't seem like eMedia Investments intends to use the above-mentioned shows to supplement this timeslot as they've begun filming replacements apparently.

If I had to guess, these shows will probably be allocated in the 10pm timeslot on e.tv which just like most of their schedule comes with a lot of conflict. But most of the timeslots are used for doccies so I can see them cutting back to accomodate these shows.

Besides that, if eMedia Investments wants these shows to succeed in terms of viewership an earlier timeslot would very much be needed. But by looking at the schedule this is probably the only way to get the shows onboard the brand.

Another brand, I wouldn't be shocked to see these shows on eXposed. They are more edgy or adult oriented with their offering I mean they offer rebroadcasts to The Black Door and have a lot of short-form series that fit their description.

Would it be shocking if these shows were Openview exclusives I mean most of eReality's offering unlike eExtra haven't been viewed on e.tv as yet. Most of the time you'd be lucky to view them if a certain program leaves the lineup which is kind of depressing.

New Series Alert: Mouse Currently Streaming On eVOD And Soon On eXposed

tvN went off air on the DStv platform in the middle of 2021 and not a day goes by where viewers grief over the loss of the #1 Korean entertainment channel as further content had been folded under MultiChoice's Showmax or eMedia's eVOD streaming service.

It led several consumers to resort other means to follow these stories or something in a similar nature. While others had to pay extra to view the bulk of content viewers on DStv were treated with the likes of eExtra.

Although its timeframe on the platform was cut short, the channel generated a huge following with the likes of Ice Adonis, Two Women and High Society Scandal and was one of the very reasons DStv made sense at this point.

The loss of eExtra not only led to the loss of viewers but content as well while kykNET builds their Turkish offering and Zee World and Star Life got Bollywood fans covered there's nothing much for Korean fans to indulge aside from what's already available on eMedia's platforms.

eExtra has Ice Adonis and Twice My Son In Law, eXposed and eVOD both got tvN originals on their plate, The K2 and Mouse.

The K2 formed part of tvN's offering on DStv while Ice Adonis was never picked up with Mouse which was one of the shows tvN had hoped to launch in the African market should a permanent position open up but as seen this past week it's currently streaming on eVOD.

Bareum is a novice police officer of Gudong Police office, taking care of all the town's misbehaviors. One day, however, he teams up with a notorious detective Muchi to arrest a psychopathic criminal.

The series is currently streaming on eVOD with the series likely to join eXposed lineup as eExtra acquire longer form series from the looks of the current development.

eMedia Updates: e.tv And eExtra Currently Streaming On eVOD, Cool Catz Returns To e.tv's Craze Block, Depp Vs. Heard Documentary Makes Its Free-To-Air Debut On eXposed

eVOD launch two new channels

During the week, Eskom began the usual power cuts and from what is seen through several businesses it disrupts the workflow with cable providers seeing a shortage in viewers.

Consumers on the DStv platform relied on the DStv app in case shed happens for several years and it was only a matter of time till more businesses adapt to this concept.

Yesterday, it was announced that e.tv and eExtra brands which carry the most local content will be funneled on the streaming service, eVOD between 5pm and 10pm sort of as a trial but viewers will be able to watch their shows in case things don't go as planned.

We are the Cool Catz

Cool Catz is an educational kids show that follows the life of 4 cats as they reside in a treehouse engaging viewers with music, games and creativity and it was one of few original show from eMedia Investments.

In 2019, the show exited Craze's primetime offering alongside the block's remaining local series as e.tv opted for more international series with Cool Catz airing in the early hours of the day (5am).

After 3 years, Cool Catz will make a comeback in the primetime section of e.tv's Craze from 4 July at 14:30 as Cool Catz New Masters with the rest of the program's catalogue available to stream on eVOD's kids corner.

More courtroom action for Openview

A few years ago, Johnny Depp was involved in a media scandal with his former partner Amber Heard as the Aquaman actress claimed the Pirate star abused her throughout her marriage and "feared for her life".

It lead the former Pirate actor to get kicked off the franchise and also Fantastic Beasts as he was blacklisted from Hollywood.

TLC launched a documentary earlier in the month detailing the relationship of the famous actors now eXposed is expected to highlight various details mentioned during their trial which was publicly screened on YouTube and various outlets.

Viewers on the Openview platform can catch this documentary June 26th at 9pm.

Alternatives To e.tv's Defunct International Offering At 20:30

Since April 2022, e.tv halted distribution of weeknight international series at 20:30 in an attempt to bolster their streaming endeavours with the likes of Disney+, Netflix and Showmax all following a similar pattern.

While e.tv's new offering has seen somewhat of success, there's still various consumers that feel excluded from this shakeup having no means opted to create some distance with the channel and explore the number of alternatives out there.

It's obvious the streamers mentioned above would make a suitable candidate to this offering but as some households struggle to get the necessary means it's best to just look at alternatives that despite being phased out are still reachable to this day.

I managed to find a list of alternatives which I thought of dividing between pay and free as there's some that are willing to the freshest shows at a cheaper price or wait a while longer to view some of this content.

Now a look at the pay-tv alternatives

1. M-Net is a premium entertainment channel home to the very best and latest international series. While e.tv used to give you 3-5 year old repeats to their offering with M-Net you can several of their upcoming projects like Chicago Fire, Seal Team, New Amsterdam and NCIS: Los Angeles.

The biggest downfall to the brand is obvious pricing which is almost close to a R1000 monthly on DStv Premium that brings in item number 2.

2. Me is catch-up channel to M-Net infused with a bit of 1Magic. The only issue with the channel is the rollout of some of the content formerly and currently on e.tv. You have Queen Sugar airing on Sundays and stuff like Chicago PD can air as early as 17:00 while e.tv used to give you that 3 hours later. But again it can be useful and make e.tv feel like they're repeating their shows 2 or 3 years later.

Best part this is all available for as little as R309p/m on DStv Family formerly R420 on DStv Compact when it was M-Net City.

3. Universal, if you've viewed e.tv's 20:30 slot that's basically what the channel is about. You had variations like Rizzoli and Isles, Bones and Leverage Redemption but the lot winds up being e.tv's lineup. You have the latest seasons of NCIS: Los Angeles and The Librarians and you find them catching up with the Chicago franchise and S.W.A.T.

In the end, Universal has more value with e.tv opting to cancel these shows from their lineup and is far better than option number 2 and valued at the same amount as them.

Now a look at the free-to-view alternatives

1. SABC 3, stylised as S3 is currently a must have for those on pay platforms following the loss of several premium International channels like Sundance TV and FOX. Viewers on those platforms like to browse shows like Kim's Convenience, Killing Eve and Narcos. Although most of it is repeats they're not following the same pattern as e.tv as the content can be outdated or probably never before seen on the pay alternatives. The disadvantage is that viewers would probably want Chicago PD and all S3 would do is air NCIS.

The channel is accessible anywhere just don't use an aerial as those will be thrown in the recycle bin.

2. eXposed

Although the lineup of shows are dead, eXposed is the reruns graveyard to the international offering. You find stuff like Empire, Shades Of Blue, Hawaii Five-O and even Blackish. Compared to all others this could be the new home of 20:30 or the reincarnate.

Downfall of Xposed is the resumes at 8am not everyone will be around to binge whatever content comes onto the channel which is why one would need the extra 7 hours. The channel is available on Openview.

India Possibly Replacing Korea On eExtra As The Channel Loads Up On Bollywood Series

Last month, MultiChoice decided to to axe eExtra alongside eToonz, eMovies and eMovies Extra. Meaning viewers without an Openview will miss out on the bulk of content coming to the channels and with eExtra's case eVOD.

Also announced last month was the launch of four series: Kindred Hearts and Twist Of Fate from Zee World alongside new seasons of Till The End Of Time and supernatant horror Naagin which again DStv customers will miss out on.

Twist Of Fate is set to come on weekdays at 15:35 from 27 June with Till The End Of Time taking up a 25 minute timeslot at 16:25 with Kindred Hearts at 16:50 and the fifth season of Naagin at 17:40. So where does that leave High Society Scandal?

High Society Scandal is a Korean drama which follows the scandalous lives of the rich and wealthy. In this scenario, you meet a woman known as Hanna that has to deal with her mother-in-law brutality such as the prevention of pregnancy with birth control or keeping her away from her real mother with a kidnapper posing as her mother.

High Society Scandal is currently on every weekday at 14:05 with repeats at 17:35 and 05:00 and on eXposed. Repeats haven't been fortunate with these kinds of programs due to the channel's increased focus to Turkish and Bollywood dramas and this new development raises concerns.

High Society Scandal will end amidst these changes and interesting enough Naagin takes up the space of 17:35 which will now be 17:40 which is 50 minutes close to Elif and not long ago The Heir ripped it away from 23:00.

All the more reasons to believe that eMedia is distancing themselves from Korea or at least for eExtra.

As mentioned, eXposed is a male counterpart of the current eReality channel infused with international dramas has been offering reruns to High Society Scandal so perhaps Korea will be moving to the channel as it has all the themes of eXposed which is drama, power and corruption.

eMedia Investment's Financial Reports: Viewership, Finances And More Channels

eMedia’s Financial Performance
For the year ending 31 March 2022, eMedia has experienced a resounding bounce back in its fnancial performance after the impact of the pandemic on businesses and the economy generally. This resounding bounce back is evident in a signifcant increase in proft from continued operations of R426.4 million as compared to the previous year’s proft of R138.5 million.

The year’s proft is also signifcantly better than the pre-COVID-19 year fiscal which ended in March 2020, which ended with an adjusted proft after adding back the goodwill impairment of R241.6 million. This fscal as compared to the pre-COVID-19 March 2020 proft shows a R184.8 million increase or a 76.5% increase and as compared to March 2021 is R287.9 million more and 207.9% better.

Revenue and Market Share
The Group’s revenue for the fiscal of R3.2 billion is the highest ever achieved, underscored by an increase in television advertising revenue to R2.1 billion. The television advertising revenue ended 39% better than the prior year and approximately 15% better than the market.

The Group beneftted from the resurgence of television advertising revenues as compared to the pandemic affected years which experienced a decline in advertising spend. This beneft in advertising revenues can be attributed to an increase in the Group’s prime time audience market share from 29.6% in March 2021 to 34.1% in March 2022, an increase of 15.2%.

Further analysis of the Group’s market share reveals an increase in both shoulder and prime time. The share ended at 31.8% and 34.1% respectively, making the Group the biggest broadcaster in audience share in both categories in South Africa.

e.tv
The increase in audience market share has driven up eTV’s advertising revenue. e.tv’s local dailies such as Imbewu, Scandal, House of Zwide and Durban General have driven the surge in market share in prime time. Edged on by this, management have invested in another local daily soap at 9.30 pm called The Black Door. With a few schedule changes Management is confdent of increasing market share.

e.tv may well be affected by the imminent analogue switch of facing the country but the group is confdent that the audience share will be carefully managed. At present the Group is awaiting a Constitutional Court decision on whether the switch off would be delayed giving more time to assist ordinary South Africans to be well accommodated and not be left without TV.

Openview
There has also been an improvement in the ratings of the other six channels produced by the group. eExtra, eMovies Extra and eReality rank in the top 15 of all satellite channels available in South Africa. A few more channels will be launched on the Openview platform.

This DTH unit of the business accounted for 21.9% of the advertising revenue amounting to R468.1 million which is up from R269.6 million in the previous year. Proftability in this unit has been achieved for the frst time with content costs for the fscal being pegged at R446.3 million.

The distribution of the four Openview entertainment channels on Multichoice, which contributed to the Group’s audience and revenue share, is presently under investigation by the Competition Commission after non-renewal of the channel carriage agreement. At the time of this report the channels remain on the Multichoice bouquet as a decision is yet to be received.

The set-top box activations for Openview are increasing on a monthly basis from an average of 35 000 per month to 40 000 per month. At the end of the period a total of 2 774 454 boxes were activated.

Technological advancements being the focus of the business will bring in the next upgraded phase of the Openview set-top box, a smarter set-top box which will have memory facilities and Wi-Fi capability.

eNCA
The news channel, eNCA, is the most watched news channel in the country, although it’s not offered on all tiers of the DSTV bouquet, whereas the competition is on all tiers. The advertising revenue targets were achieved through the pandemic affected years while its costs were carefully maintained.

The group has secured a further fve year agreement with Multichoice for the carriage of eNCA. The channel will remain exclusive to Mutichoice.

eVOD
In August 2021 eMedia launched an OTT platform, eVOD which has been well accepted in its target market. The number of registered viewers to date has been very encouraging with the average daily minutes viewed in excess of 1 000 000. The eOriginals offering on eVOD is the leading audience generator on eVOD making the group bullish about investing a further R100 million in local original content which will be amortised across the Group’s platforms and channels.

Other Subsidiaries
All of the groups subsidiaries which include Media Film Service, Sasani Studios, The Refnery, Cape Town Film Studios and YFM have posted better results having recovered from the COVID-19 years and all have returned to proftability.

Costs
Administrative and other costs have been well maintained although an increase of 19.7% has been revealed. This increase is mainly due to certain companies within the Group returning to 100% of salaries after reductions in the period of lockdowns and an increase in marketing activities after the lull brought on by the pandemic.

Cost of sales, which mainly consists of the cost of content, in the case of e.tv and employee costs in the case of eNCA, increased from R1 494.2 million to R1 748.1 million. Much of this increase is because of the bold step of introducing a new prime time daily “soap”, Durban General which launched in October 2020. This calculated risk was rewarded by the outstanding performance of the programme in its time slot. The fnancial year has also seen another new “soap”, House of Zwide replace Rhythm City. House of Zwide improved the group’s market share in the time slot. This increase in share of both of the new soaps underwrites an increase in revenue.

Proftability
The only asset of the group is a 67.69% interest in eMedia Investments the company that owns etv, eNCA, Openview, eVOD among other businesses.
The Group ended the year with a net proft of R420.8 million, which is inclusive of the loss of R5.6 million relating to discontinued operations, made up of losses from operations that the Group has considered non-essential and will be exiting or closing in the next fnancial year.

The above proft should be viewed in the context of the proft of the prior year of R107.9 million and an adjusted proft of R225.0 million in the year ended 31 March 2020. The year before the impact of the pandemic.

Earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization for the Group ended on R677.9 million compared to R302.9 million in the prior year, a 123.8% increase year-on-year.

Conclusion
The Group is forging ahead with numerous technology advances and strategic planning to continue to be the audience share market leader. The investment in Openview provides the Group with the strategic flexibility and is the plan to address the challenges of the transition that digital migration brings with it.

With the closure of non-core assets, the Group is now focused on its core business of broadcasting, content creation, platform advancements and a granular focus on technology that improves broadcasting.

Roundups #44: Mr. Bean Returns With A New Series On Netflix, Blair's Witch Might Be Getting A Reboot And The Goldbergs Renewed For A Tenth Season On ABC

Rowan Atkinson and Netflix partner up on new series

Netflix has teamed up with the legendary Mr Bean star Rowan Atkinson for a mini-series titled Man vs. Bee. The streaming giant shared the first poster of the highly anticipated series, which will feature the British comedy giant in the lead, and it is set for global release on June 24, 2022. The series will also reunite Atkinson with William Davies as writers; the two have previously worked together in Atkinson’s Johnny English trilogy.

The series has been directed by David Kerr, who was also the director of Johnny English Strikes Again. His other directorial credits include Fresh Meat, Inside No. 9, Webb Look and That Mitchell.

The series’ synopsis reads: “A man finds himself at war with a bee while housesitting a luxurious mansion. Who will win, and what irreparable damage will be done in the process?” The 10-part mini-series will have a runtime of only 10 minutes per episode.

Lionsgate reportedly rebooting Blair's Witch

One of the most iconic horrors of the last half-century, 1999's The Blair Witch Project kick-started the ever-creepy found-footage genre and redefined movie marketing strategies while it was at it.

Grainy, hand-held videotaping aside, most terrifying of all about The Blair Witch Project was that it was promoted as being real-life footage left behind by missing film students, meaning 90s audiences thought what they were witnessing in cinemas was 100% real.

What’s more, the hair-raising flick was filmed on a budget of around $20,000 but recouped approximately $250,000,000.

As is often the way, later Blair Witch reboots were less successful, with both 2000’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and 2016’s Blair Witch being panned by critics.

The Goldbergs shocking renewal

The Goldbergs, which recently hit the 200-episode mark, will keep going as ABC has renewed the family comedy for a 10th season.

The renewal caps a trying year for The Goldbergs, which follows the challenges, ups, downs, twists and turns in the life of the chaotic but loving titular family during the Reagan era. In the past 13 months, the comedy lost two core cast members: George Segal, who died in March 2021 of complications from bypass surgery, and Jeff Garlin, who exited in December following multiple misconduct allegations and HR investigations.

The Goldbergs opened its current ninth season with the TV family paying tribute to late Albert “Pops” Solomon, who was played by Segal.

Rumoured: eMedia Investments Reportedly Entered Talks With StarSat

eMedia Investments is taking MultiChoice to the Competition Tribunal in regard to their agreement for the 4 channels currently seen on DStv. The brand demands for more money and obviously MultiChoice refused which led to the axing of their channels from the brand by June.

In an interview, eMedia Investments was asked about their future on pay-tv or whether their channels will remain exclusive on the Openview platform and they had this to say:

Our strategy is that our channels are free-to-air channels and should be available wherever people access channels.

Not long ago, several consumers approached StarSat on the possibility of adding more e.tv channels to the platform and responded with a cryptic message:

We are working on it.

Although that doesn't say much, it does bring joy to the dismissal portfolio.

In 2014, the pay-tv platform negotiated with eMedia Investments of the once available eAfrica+ alongside eMovies+ (now eMovies) and eKasi+ (now eExtra) before plans fell through and a year later they were only fortunate to get eKasi+ onboard.

Fast forward to 2022, the pay-tv platform lost a lot of premium channels such as FOX, Fine Living, The Smithsonian Channel, Discovery Family, SA Music, St Eyethu and several other channels with failure to source out alternative channels.

eMedia Investments bundle of channels could fill up the gap for some of these areas.

eToonz could make up for the loss of DreamWorks which is now on DStv, although no movie channels were harmed on the platform eMovies could bolster the movie offering either way I don't see the sense in having that on StarSat unlike eReality which could make up for the portion of Discovery channels removed on the platform.

In other regions, it appears that the brand is just sourcing some regional stations to make up for the losses and the idea of StarSat bundling more channels from the platform doesn't seem far fetched at this point.
