80 Projects Announced At 2020 Disney Investor Day

Here are the 80 biggest announcements Disney made.

The Walt Disney Company on Thursday night held a virtual 2020 Disney Investor Day that included a raft of content announcements that ranged from the Kardashians to the Marvel universe, from Pixar to National Geographic and even that Star Wars galaxy far, far away.

Disney's presentation was strongly focused on how the Mouse House is bolstering its catalogue of its Disney+ video streaming service, clearly showing that as the world's second-biggest streaming service it is ready to take on Netflix for first place.

Disney executives said that it's main-focus in content creation is now on growing its direct-to-consumer business, meaning Disney+, and that it is pivoting to a "DTC first business model".

Disney spoke multiple times about its Disney+ subscribers "all around the world" and new territories where it plans to launch Disney+ as well as its general entertainment video streamer STAR.

With its presentation Disney clearly wanted to show that it can rival or outpace a competitor like Netflix when it comes to creating new original content based on its own sought-after brands and intellectual property.

Here is the 80 most noteworthy announcements Disney made:

1. While Disney plans to rollout Disney+ in more countries and territories in 2021, the continent of Africa and South Africa as it's most developed TV market still doesn't feature anywhere.

Disney+ is already in all of the comparable markets to South Africa like the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and South American countries, and Disney will roll out STAR as a new general entertainment video streamer in places like South America.

2. STAR as Disney's new subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service will be a general video entertainment service that will launch outside of the United States.

It will be for more mature audiences like adults and older teenagers, so it will, for instance, carry a film like Deadpool and general content that - although part of Disney - Disney wants to keep separate from the kid and family-friendly Disney+ brand.

STAR is essentially the hulu video streamer that is available in America but that Disney last year said "has no name brand recognition" outside of America, which is why Disney is going with STAR internationally.

STAR will include series from Disney Television Studios and FX, as well as films and library content from the Disney library and its 21st Century acquisition, for instance, The Simpsons. Available content titles will only show up within STAR depending on the parental control level chosen.

In South America STAR will launch as it's own stand-alone service called STAR+. Elsewhere, for instance, in Australia, Canada and elsewhere, it will launch in February 2021 as STAR as the 6th tile within the existing Disney+ streaming service. Disney+ now has 86.8 million subscribers globally and will hike prices from March 2021 because of the fold-in STAR content offering.

3. hulu's The Handmaid's Tale seen on M-Net (DStv 101) and Showmax has been renewed for a 5th season.

4. The Kardashian Jenner clan and their Keeping Up with the Kardashians that got cancelled on NBCUniversal's E! (DStv 124) a few months ago is jumping into streaming. hulu and STAR is doing a new video streaming reality series with the Kardashians that it plans to run for several years.

hulu content, unlike Disney+ content, is for sale to M-Net so expect this series to show up on M-Net, one of the M-Net channels like VUZU, or somewhere on DStv.

5. FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia seen on M-Net (DStv 101) and Showmax has been renewed for a further 4 more seasons, taking it to season 18.

6. FX has commissioned an Alien TV series, as "the first Alien story set on Earth" and Ridley Scott is involved. "Set not too far into our future, it's the first Alien story set on Earth. By blending both the timeless horror of the first film with the action of the second, it's going to be a scary thrill-ride that will blow people back in their seats". This series will very likely be available for pick-up by M-Net (DStv 101) or FOX (DStv 125 / StarSat 131).

7. FX is working on Shogun, a new series based on the James Clavell novel, as "one of the most sweeping, sophisticated adult series that FX has ever created". It is "set within the riveting and real Game of Thrones that was feudal Japan".

8. Disney and Lucasfilm are working to bring a further 10 Star Wars series to Disney+. Star Wars The Mandalorian is getting two, live-action spin-off TV series. Star Wars Rangers of the New Republic and Star Wars Asoka will both be set within the timeline of The Mandalorian. "These interconnected shows along with future stories will excite new audiences," says Disney. These series will "culminate in a climactic story event".

9. "One of the most exciting and ambitious series we have coming to Disney+ in 2022 is Endor - a tense, nailbiting spy-thriller in the Star Wars universe," with Diego Luna back in the role as Rebel spy Cassian Endor from Rogue One. Production on Endor started in London 2 weeks ago.

10. Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi is a special event series and will start 10 years after the dramatic events of the Revenge of the Sith film. "Hayden Christensen will be returning in the role of Darth Vader. This will be the rematch of the century". Production will start in March 2021.

Elinor Wonders Why Airs On PBS Kids Africa

Elinor Wonders Why encourages children to follow their curiosity, ask questions when they don’t understand and find answers using science inquiry skills. The main character Elinor, the most observant and curious bunny rabbit in Animal Town, will introduce kids ages 3-5 to science, nature and community through adventures with her friends. This new multiplatform series, created by Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson and produced in partnership with Pipeline Studios.

“Kids love to ask questions about how the world works,” said Linda Simensky, Vice President, Children’s Programming, PBS. “That’s what makes ELINOR WONDERS WHY such a perfect show for preschoolers. Kids will recognize themselves in Elinor’s boundless curiosity as she pursues the questions she wonders about – making observations and reveling in nature’s amazing answers.”

The stories in ELINOR WONDERS WHY center around Elinor and her friends Ari, a funny and imaginative bat, and Olive, a perceptive and warm elephant. As kids explore Animal Town, they will meet all kinds of interesting, funny, and quirky characters, each with something to teach us about respecting others, the importance of diversity, caring for the environment, and working together to solve problems. In each episode, Elinor models the foundational practices of science inquiry and engineering design -- including her amazing powers of observation and willingness to ask questions and investigate. When she encounters something she doesn’t understand, like why birds have feathers or how tiny ants build massive anthills, she just can’t let it go until she figures it out. And in discovering the answers, Elinor often learns something about nature’s ingenious inventions and how they can connect to ideas in our designed world, and what it takes to live in a community. Elinor Wonders Why encourages children and parents to ask their own questions and experience the joy of discovery and understanding together.

“We want to encourage children’s curious nature and share with them the fun and joy of discovery. We hope to show children that science is not just a list of facts, but a way of answering questions, and of learning about the world,” said co-creators Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson.

Each episode of Elinor Wonders Why will include two animated 11-minute stories with accompanying interstitial content. The series is currently in production for 40 half-hour episodes.

Catch the first episode on Friday, 11 December at 16:00 CAT/15:00 WAT/17:00 EAT

PBS Kids is available on DStv across Africa and GOtv in selected markets.

Mindset Pop And ZNBC Education Stops Airing On DStv

On December, 10 at 23:59 ZNBC Education (DStv channel 315) and Mindset POP (DStv channel 317) will go off air as the agreement states these channels were available for a limited period.

A representative of DStv stated a few months back that Mindset POP was available on a full-time basis and you clearly see that's not the case. Of course the owners of the channel are hoping to continue the brand on another platform or they could move them to Mindset.

ZNBC Education came in as a walking Mindset channel in the same market where that channel pretty much existed. It was helpful since Mindset couldn't cover certain learning areas. The content there was live as well like POP.

Mi Corazon Insiste En Lola Volcan Makes Its Comeback On The New Year On Another Station

The series graced Africa's screens when Telemundo made its successful debut in the market back in 2013 alongside Aurora, Behind Closed Doors, Precious Rose and the late bloomer The Del Monte Dynasty.

The love Lola and Andres have for one another knows no boundaries. Hopeful with the idea of loving each other for eternity, they decide to elope to Las Vegas, confronting Andres’ family, who has always opposed their relationship. Little did they know that their decisions would bring about the greatest misfortune of their lives. Lola, in an act of rebellion against her aunt Chabela and her mother Soledad, who also oppose their love, escapes one night and gets a salamander tattooed on her back. The tattoo is a symbol of her love for Andres, who has called her “my salamander” since they met. Marcelo Santacruz, Andres’ father, puts him back in the military school from which he escaped, making sure that this time Andres is watched extra closely. As if this was not enough, Marcelo also schemes to lock Lola in jail – where she will remain for more than five years.

During this time of imprisonment, Lola will learn to survive through her spiritual strength, a strength she learned since childhood from her aunt Chabela. She will keep her hope to reunite with Andres alive, not knowing that destiny has other plans for her.

Once out of jail, Lola will confront a series of misfortunes that will change her whole existence. Her aunt Chabela dies and her mother suffers with severe depression and needs to be admitted into a psychiatric hospital. Andres, her only remaining life support, is about to marry Debora, his eternal admirer, who hates Lola since they were little girls. Desperate, feeling deceived and without means, Lola decides to accept a marriage proposal from a family acquaintance who acts as her protector. Andres will insist on winning Lola over once again, but it will seem that this couple will never be able to make it so their paths unite… nor fully separate. Out of spite, Lola rejects Andres and marries four times, although none of her husbands will be suitable or lasting, since all will die unexpectedly, not long after saying “I do.”

Lola considers Andres her best friend, her first love, and the only man she’s given everything to, but her pride and determination to not depend on others push her to fight against what her heart really wants, causing this love to appear nearly impossible.

Follow the journey of My Heart Beats For Lola weekdays at 23:00 from Monday 11 January on eExtra

OpenView Launches Two Music Channels Without Notice

At this point, both e.tv and OpenView are killing themselves with these last minute announcements and failure to engage with the media. Don't know who told them it was the brightest idea to leave the media out in the cold.

Recently, viewers noticed that there's two music channels onboard which are SA Hits and Soul Playlist.

SA Hits (Channel 135) will feature house music and possibly several other genres from Euphonik, DJ Zinhle, Mahoota, Master KG and more.

Soul Playlist (Channel 136) will feature other genres on top of Jazz with artists ranging from Jamie Callum, Nina Simone, Diana Krall, Billie Holiday and many more.

Both will launch as a pop-up channel on Friday, 4 December. You notice how they don't mention an end date so perhaps they're working towards having it full-time. Expect them to be more repetitive than the ones on DStv and local based as mentioned above.

----------------------------------------------------------

This festive season, Openview turns up the volume with two new pop-up music video channels, premiering on Friday, 4 December.

SA Hits will have its home on channel 135 of the Openview Free-To-Air satellite platform. The channel will be a dedicated and dance-inducing mash-up of proudly South African music, the latest in social media culture, local fashion, together with local destinations and brands.

You can expect local mega hits from musicians such as one part of KZN's Finest DJ Tira, Heavy K, Busiswa, Black Coffee, DJ Zinhle, and Euphonik.

Experience nostalgic trips down memory lane with hits from yesteryear by Oskido, Trompies, and Mahoota.

Openview Channel 136, Soul Playlist, is where you head for a dose of relaxation, courtesy of soothing video hits from Mzansi and the world's most renowned RnB, Jazz, and Soul maestros.

Sit back and unwind with Nina Simone, Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall, Billie Holiday, and Ella Jane Fitzgerald.

The Free-To-Air satellite platform has officially surpassed 2.2m household activations, with a steady increase promising to propel Openview to greater heights.

Openview MD, Mmatshipi Matebane is delighted at the premiere of the SA Hits and Soul Playlist pop-up channels, "Our efforts to provide our fans with festive cheer through music are proving to be fruitful. We look forward to families bonding over song, as either one of the Openview channels lends itself to the makings of long-lasting memories. We want to thank all our Openview viewers for the continued love and support and wish them a safe and joyous holiday season," said Matebane.

Openview is South Africa's only free satellite TV service, with 18 TV channels and 9 radio stations.

There are no contracts and no monthly fees, pay once for dish and decoder and enjoy more TV for free, forever.

Unlike The U.S. Counterpart, Paramount Network Still Continues To Rollout In Another Region + It Might Launch In Africa

Hungary became the latest victim in ViacomCBS revamp portfolio. Under these changes the male skewed channel, RTL Spike will convert into the teen based channel TeenNick with The Paramount Channel which was used for movies taking the best of RTL Spike and placing it under the Paramount Network.

Back in September, ViacomCBS in the US announced that Paramount Network will convert into a movie channel next year under the name, Paramount Movies Network. At the time, it was currently unknown whether this would have some effect on the Paramount Networks around the world (guess not).

The likely reason for Paramount Network continuation may have something to do with the upcoming rebrand for the streaming service CBS All Access which is set to be called Paramount+ later in the new year and also rollout in more countries.

It's kind of like what Latin America is experiencing with the FOX branding which is getting replaced with Star. Disney is rolling out a mature version of Disney+ under the banner Star or Disney+ Star.

Now in Africa, Paramount Network doesn't exist yet and certain media outlets have been very curious about the future of the brand here. Even some theorized that it might launch to replace MTV.

My theory would be that Paramount Network launches to replace Comedy Central which is very accessible in Africa. Not only that MTV gets booted with some of its programming moving inbetween Paramount Network, BET and perhaps MTV Base.

Right now, Comedy Central especially BET are very redundant and not tough competitors - they look more like placeholders. Comedy Central case is partly justified since genre based channels can be very repetitive. These two love sharing programs especially with The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air.

MTV is the only decent channel amongst the three and channels like that are usually the ones that get most blows. It wouldn't be a complete loss as the channel didn't gain much recognition and acknowledgement like MTV Base.

This is common in Africa, you had channels such as Animal Planet, Crime & Investigation, BBC First and several others get snatched only for the mediocre and useless batch of channels to stay afloat.

Paramount Network launches in Africa carrying and likely rehash MTV shows such as Teen Mom, Ex On The Beach and Geordie Shore. The twist would be the channel actually replaced Comedy Central so if you want to see The Roast Specials and South Park then this will be your station. Paramount Movies Network in the U.S. will be producing movies maybe that will be added as a bonus constellation.

BET gets a boost with MTV shows such as Lasizwe: Fake It Till You Make It, Have Faith, The Code Trilogies and Love And Hip-Hop mixed with their dry lineup of shows strengthening the channel's offering.

At this point, MTV shifts it's focus towards music perhaps all the music award specials and musician based reality shows will be put on the Afro obsessed channel, MTV Base.

2021 is shaping up to be an interesting year for TV with more companies streamlining their channels and portfolios being reviewed.

Black Money Love Is Back On Another Station

If you're reading then you guessed correctly, Black Money Love returns to Africa once again. The show made its debut on FOX Life (discontinued), eExtra, Novelas E Plus and now Timeless Dizi Channel. You must have a high level of tolerance if you're able to rewatch this whole story again.

Black Money Love (Kara Para Ask), follows the life of Omer (Engin Akyurek) and Elif (Tuba Buyukustun) whose destinies cross after a death of their loved ones. They team up to track down the killer and meet a man who knows their secrets and is one step ahead of them.

Since it's debut back in 2014, the show won 19 awards with 6 of them going to the lead actor and 5 going to the lead actress.

The show's debut shouldn't surprise the media after all SPI International mentioned at their upfront last year and all markets that have this channel will likely get the same content at different times. So other shows that still have yet to air is 20 Minutes, Five Brothers, The End and The 8th Day.

There could be a movie block like a file stated perhaps after the trail period ends on DStv or when the channel manages to rollout enough content.

You can catch this "new" show on Monday 7 December at 19:00 CAT/18:00 WAT/20:00 EAT

Disney Latin America Renaming FOX Channels In Latin America To Star, Will FOX Follow In Africa Very Soon?

Earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced that the Walt Disney Company would be launching a new streaming service called “Star” internationally, rather than Hulu. With “Star” including general entertainment movies and shows from its brands such as ABC, FX, Freeform, Searchlight Pictures and 20th Century Studios. “Star” will also be fully integrated into the established Disney+ platform from both a marketing and a technology perspective, possibly similar to how Hotstar became Disney+ Hotstar in India.

Just ahead of the launch of Star, according to a statement that was provided to cable operators, Disney is going to be renaming it’s “FOX” channels to “Star” in Latin America from February 2021. With both the Fox channel and Fox Life, becoming Star Channel and Star Life.

-FOX Channel will be Star Channel.
-FOX Life will be Star Life.
-FOX Premium will be Star Premium.
-FOX App will be Star App

Fox Premium channels will also be rebranded, becoming: Star Premium Movies, Star Premium Series, Star Premium Action, Star Premium Comedy, Star Premium Fun, Star Premium Cinema and Star Premium Classics.

In Africa, Star operates Indian channels such as StarPlus, Star Vijay and Star Life. There's a chance that Star Life (currently seen on StarTimes, DStv and OpenView) will get a name change perhaps into Star India or something close to that in order to not cause confusion if they do end up rebranding FOX into Star in this region.

Now the issue here is their channels are operated under Star India and not Disney in general. So maybe this whole thing has no effect on us but there's a chance it could have some effect since Latin America is changing the channels and not India. Or perhaps the one here will be called Disney's Star or Star By Disney.

SA Government Might Enforce A Local Quota On Linear Platforms

The government is considering adding a local quota onto streaming services where 30% of the programming needs to come from South Africa. So they're likely to go after DStv, Starsat and OpenView.

While they're looking at the content for streaming platforms. On cable they might exploring more aspects such as the channels offered by these operators.

MULTICHOICE:
One things for certain is they've slowly begun investing more in local programming look at M-Net they've started prepping up dramas such as Trackers, Inconcievable and ongoing soap opera, Legacy.

Internationally, most channels offer very little local content you have Comedy Central with its CC Roast Special, MTV and Lasizwe and E! with Celebrity Game Night. No one knows if the government will inflict the quota on these type of channels or the extant of them.

This year alone they managed to get stations like the interactive wilderness channel Wild Earth, KykNet's pop-up movie channel fliekNET returned on a permanent basis alongside KykNet Lekker - a channel carrying old content from their archives.

In short, MultiChoice is more than ready for this than any other platform. The question remains on whether they have enough local content.

STARSAT:
They invest very little onto the market when it comes to programming which is justified since they're not entirely based in South Africa and a cheap version of DStv.

This might not be enough as the government will likely want them to invest more in the community like M-Net is doing with its local programming.

In the end, they have shown support for the local community with their wide range of channels such as eExtra, Soweto TV, 1KZN TV, OnseTV, Mindset and few others.

OPENVIEW:
For a free-to-air platform they have a decent amount of local channels like Starsat and since not a lot of entertainment is available on this platform. They might meet up with the government's expectations should they consider it.

Out of 15 channels, only 2 come from a foreign market and only 7 offer local programming.

Will eMedia Investments Launch A Standalone News & Sports Channel On OpenView Very Soon?

By the end of November, News & Sports which is currently available on OpenView channel 120 and the digital platform VIU will no longer broadcast news from 16:00-19:00 which led some viewers to believe that news will be getting a dedicated channel for news but perhaps their newsroom is taking some time off.

Maybe it's true since neither OpenView or e.tv seem to care about approaching the media on any developments seen on their platform. When it comes to stability, they've always had their ups and downs with news & sports.

For starters, they had BBC World News for 3 years then after you got the French lifestyle channel, France24 which looks like a gonner. Then they tried to operate their own news channel OpenNews with the help of international news blocks such as CGTN, TRT World, DW and a few others before just downsizing to eNCA bulletins and magazine shows on top of having their name changed 3 times in the span of 3 years.

On the sports section, OpenView didn't express much interest until 2016 when they got the underperforming lifestyle channel, Trace Sports Stars. When that didn't work, they got Kwesé Free Sports as a means to give viewers the best in sporting action that was until Econet got liquidated which led to its demise. Then there was the outdated sumo and wrestling channel, Fight Sports which lasted a year.

Right now, News & Sports is the only reliable channel on OpenView and it seems e.tv will be more dependant on itself for these categories as opposed to third parties.

At the moment, they don't have enough content to make them stand seperated perhaps it will be like that in future for now it's impossible but hey OpenView is full of surprises.

Australia Is Following South African Government And Have A Much Higher Demand In Local Content For Streaming Services

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT

Netflix and other global streaming services could be forced to spend millions of dollars on Australian programs and films under major changes to media laws proposed by the federal government that could level the regulatory playing field with free-to-air TV networks.

The government is also considering scrapping annual broadcast spectrum taxes for commercial TV networks and replacing them with a new licensing regime which could save broadcasters up to $12 million each year.

Netflix and other global streaming services could be forced to meet Australian content quotas under the proposed changes.

Federal Communications and Arts Minister Paul Fletcher, who will launch a green paper with the proposed reforms on Friday, said the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic had reinforced the need for regulatory action to help the TV industry.

"What we are proposing would rebalance Australia's media regulations so that the industry can continue to support jobs, connect communities, and keep Australian stories on our screens regardless of whether they prefer to watch free-to-air television, subscription television or video-on-demand services," Mr Fletcher said.

The green paper proposes creating a law that requires streaming services to invest a percentage of their Australian revenue on local content, either in the form of commissions, co-productions or acquisitions of content. However, it stops short of stipulating what the percentage should be.

"We're seeking feedback on all of the proposals including the percentage rate," Mr Fletcher said.

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher will release the green paper on Friday with several proposed changes to media laws.
Communications Minister Paul Fletcher will release the green paper on Friday with several proposed changes to media laws.

He said the content obligation would not apply to streaming services such as Stan, which is part of a group that has a broadcasting licence and is already subject to Australian content obligations.

A 2017 federal parliamentary inquiry into the Australian film and television industry recommended subscription streaming services invest 10 per cent of the revenues they earn in Australia in new local content. But when the government announced plans for changes to rules around content in September, it did not outline any plans for streaming services to meet a local content quota.

Under the plans announced two months ago, Mr Fletcher said commercial broadcasters would no longer be required to create a certain amount of hours of local children's content and drama. But 55 per cent of total content on a free-to-air broadcaster must be Australian.

Mr Fletcher said Netflix was an "increasingly significant acquirer of Australian content" and there was a possibility it would already meet a content obligation should one be imposed.

Other streaming services operating in Australia include Foxtel's Binge, Disney Plus, Amazon's Prime Video, and Apple TV. The streaming services are expected to oppose any move to regulate their local content.

In a joint submission to a federal government options paper earlier this year, Netflix, Stan, Prime Video and Disney Plus said "we strongly believe that there is no market failure to address" and claimed each company "already makes a significant contribution to Australia's screen production industry".

As part of the proposed reforms, free-to-air TV networks would also be given the choice to opt-in to a new broadcasting licence in exchange for transitioning to using less radiofrequency spectrum. The spectrum made available would be sold to telecommunications companies and used for their rollout of 5G, which will deliver faster mobile network speeds.

Mr Fletcher said broadcasters could move to transmission arrangements which used less spectrum but which maintain their service levels at close to current levels, with a minimal impact on viewers.

Media companies such as Nine, Seven West Media and Network Ten were put under financial pressure this year due to sharp falls in advertising spend caused by the crisis. Regional broadcasters such as Prime Media, WIN Corp and Southern Cross Austereo were also badly affected and were forced to slash jobs or put staff on JobKeeper to adapt to the market conditions. The government provide some interim relief to cope with the financial pressure such as the removal of spectrum licence fees.

Spectrum fees were introduced after the abolishment of broadcast licence fees back in 2017. The fee is dependent on a range of factors, including how much spectrum a network has and its strength, but broadcasters have advocated for these to be removed altogether.

Should sufficient numbers of industry players opt for the new licence, the government is further proposing to allocate some of the proceeds from the auction of the extra spectrum to establish trust funds to support the Australian media and production sectors.

SA GOVERNMENT
The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies said that it plans to enforce local content quotas on streaming services such as Netflix.

The proposal is contained in the department’s white paper on Audio and Audio-visual Content Services policy framework which is currently open for public comment. The department presented the framework to parliament on Wednesday (25 November).

In his presentation, the department’s chief director of broadcasting policy Collin Mashile said that local content should be ‘enabled’ by further policy interventions within the audiovisual broadcasting space.

“Where video-on-demand subscription services come and operate in South Africa, everything that they show to South Africans in terms of their catalogue – 30% of that catalogue must be South African content,” Mashile said.

“What this means is that we are trying to create opportunities for the production and creative industry sector.”

While US-based streaming services like Netflix have increased local content output in recent years, making just under a third of all content on the platform local may prove particularly onerous for the streaming giant.

Mashile addressed this by pointing to the popularity of local shows in South Africa. “We were asked where we got the idea that South Africans are interested in this 30%,” he said. “The most popular shows in every country remain the local shows.”

The White Paper also broadens definition of a “broadcasting service” to include online broadcasting services.

By implication, that would require the payment of a license fee for the viewing any “broadcasting services” which would include a streaming services, regardless of the device on which it is viewed.

In an op-ed published at the start of November, the SABC’s head of TV licences Sylvia Tladi said that changes need to be made to South Africa’s broadcasting regulations – including an expanded definition of a ‘TV set’ or now, a broadcasting device.

Some of the devices which are being considered under this expanded definition include: Laptops; Tablets; IPTV; Internet; Decoders; Set-top boxes; Smartphones.

Tladi said that these devices, which have resulted in new media platforms and content dissemination channels, have a direct impact on TV licence legislation.

She said that the SABC’s submission also calls for an overhauled TV licence fee system and changes to the legislation regarding public funding strategies envisaged by TV licences.

“To ensure maximum compliance with legislative requirements concerning the payment of TV licence fees, the SABC proposes that the act should place stricter obligations on all relevant stakeholders or role players because the ‘traditional’ television set is no longer the only means of receiving a television broadcast.

“Therefore, to administer compliance on the payment of licence fees, the SABC is of the view that other entities must be compelled to report on the sale, lease or usage of these ‘television sets’ or ‘viewing devices’.

WildEarth Extends Its Reach To More DStv Customers

MultiChoice launched WildEarth as an experimental channel back in August offering live wildlife content from across the world.

The people who manage this brand also supply SafariLIVE which is currently on SABC 3.

The channel was set go off on November 25 but went past it's trial date as MultiChoice kept it onboard full-time now. Not only that WildEarth which was exclusive to DStv Premium and Compact+ is now available to DStv Compact and Family customers.

It seems like DStv Compact is starting to lose its edge now that most new channels are being leached between that package and Family. It's evident that DStv is losing a lot of Premium customers and they even went as far as merging the stats of Premium with Compact+ to easen the blow.

DStv Family is slowly replacing DStv Compact kind of like how that package including Plus replaced Premium.

WildEarth wasn't the only pop-up channel on DStv. There's currently 3 experimental channels running on DStv with the fourth one set for an early 2021 release.

Plans For Mindset Pop, People's Weather And Supa TV

Admist the pandemic, MultiChoice partnered up with Mindset to launch a second educational channel to help learners from Grade 4-9 catch-up to their schoolwork while Supabets launched its first linear channel exclusively on OpenView.

People's Weather went from being a 24 hour weather channel to an environmental and lifestyle channel.

Mindset POP has shown remarkable success introduction on DStv and Supa TV has helped viewers win some extra cash and also managed to grow the owner's brand.

According to both suppliers, they're looking into expanding the reach of these channels to more platforms meaning that more learners will get access to the educational material on Mindset POP and more viewers can engage with Supa TV since most of them don't have an OpenView.

People's Weather which was only on DStv has been added onto OpenView recently. If you want nature, documentaries and wildlife then this is your channel. There's even a chance it will pop-up on Starsat and StarTimes.

Mindset POP joins other current educational kids channels in the market such as Mindset, Baby TV, CBeebies, Nick Jr, Disney Junior, JimJam, Da Vinci Kids, PBS Kids, SABC Education, DBE TV, Zoomoo, CBeebies.

Supa TV joins Tellytrack as the only few betting channels within the market.

People's Weather is the only accessible channel within the market other channels like Curiosity Channel, National Geographic, National Geographic Wild, Da Vinci Kids, Wild Earth and Discovery Channel require you to pay monthly.
