Cost Cutting: The Possible Outcome To South African Based Bollywood Channel On The Openview Platform

Following Glow TV's return to the Openview platform, there's been a lot of questions regarding the fate of SA based Bollywood infused TV channel by Nismedia as sources speculate the channel's demise when its contract with eMedia Investments expires in February 2023.

Glow TV was removed on the DStv platform in March 2018 when the pay-tv platform opted to not renew their agreement which had a major impact to their offering as primetime converted to reruns as they worked on sourcing new episodes.

Since 2018, Openview has been a top priority for Glow TV as most of their viewers and income reside on that platform. Whenever there's a blackout, Glow TV helps viewers to catch-up on what they've missed even adjusting their normal viewing to accomodate those viewers.

That's all about to change by February 2023 should the channel go off air on the Openview platform. Glow TV will likely cutback in staff and programming to accommodate their remaining audience on the StarSat platforms.

eMedia's 4 channels were removed from the DStv platform which left several disgruntled customers that are fed up with the excessive repeats on the platform with several others opting for Openview but that might not entirely be the case with Openview.

Openview is catered to low income households and taking that to account how many consumers have the funds for StarSat. Even if the channel makes its presence aware on the platform there's no guarantee that all their consumers will head there.

If anything the channel could try growing its presence with the launch of a streaming service or mobile app another could be partnerships perhaps with the likes of TelkomOne and rival to Openview, PremiumFree and if possible SABC's DTT.

Could Openview Be Losing More Channels In The Near Future?

During the year, Openview consumers lost a total of 3 channels Rewind and News And Sport from eMedia Investments as they were reviewing their offering on the platform with Soul Music's exit on the platform remaining as much of a mystery.

Compared to other outlets there hasn't been much bloodbath coming for these consumers as they inherited the likes of eXposed, ePlesier, The Home Channel+ and an upcoming entertainment channel scheduled to launch by the end of 2022.

Of course, there's been a pair of channels viewers have been questioning for a while now and as the year is about to come to a close why not bring it up now.

Last year, eMedia Investments and Nismedia engaged in a brawl in regards to the carriage agreement for Glow TV. Long story short, things haven't been the same between both parties and signs of its demise on the platform are as clear as day.

If you browse Openview's website, there's no mention of Glow TV despite its presence on the decoder. So just like how eMedia's 4 channels remained on DStv due to a technicality, could the same matter be the case for Glow TV?

SA Music is currently the only music channel on the platform kind of like how France24 and SABC Sport remain as the only news and sports channel respectively but in this case it's more serious.

Later in the year, Openview consumers awoke to the news of Soul Music's demise on the platform which served as a sister channel to SA Music but that's not where the worries originate but to its previous distributor StarSat.

StarSat has seen a loss in channels and it's interesting how it remains relevant at least to South Africans following the loss of current DStv channels like Discovery Family, Real Time, Investigation Discovery, TLNovelas and DreamWorks with more likely to join that list.

On Openview, the only channels consumers from eMedia Investments inherited were SA Music and Soul Music with its termination on the platform having to do with StarSat. Imagine if the same action seen on StarSat were to have fallen on Openview but this time with SA Music.

Honestly, the future isn't certain for any channel at this point but SA Music and Glow TV seem closer to the light than any other channel.

Could StarSat Bid Farewell To Yet Another Two Local Channels?

During the week, StarSat announced they'd dub various telenovelas from Mexico, Asia, Turkey and the Phillipines in local languages in their newly launched voiceover studio and this comes after the rollout of Zee TV's The Heir and TFC based drama Blood Sisters in Zulu.

In the midst of these announcements, StarSat once again cut down on a further two channels OnseTV and InPas TV which are set to go off-air by the end of September with no confirmation of a replacement joining a hundred other channels to go off air in the same manner.

In July, kykNET opted to distribute two Turkish dramas to kykNET & Kie but this came at a time MultiChoice opted to scrap eExtra alongside eMedia's other 3 channels before being reinstated onto the DStv platform.

Point being made, MultiChoice had mentioned how these channels offered a lot of rebroadcasts and eExtra had the least amount but with kykNET's offering it is believed that anyone can duplicate eExtra despite the variation in content.

StarSat opting to resort to such extent for their channels has me to believe that maybe eExtra won't be as much of a priority to them in the near future as they'll build eExtra across various brands on top of it launching a pay version of the Openview platform.

OnseTV and InPas TV were likely removed as part of a cost cutting measure with the funds used to build up more African dubbed International series. So would it be shocking if StarSat were to follow MultiChoice's footsteps in the downfall of eExtra.

Glow TV another local channel seen on the platform has seen a decline in audiences with the increased number of competitors in the market it is basically what Mpuma Kapa TV and Cape Town TV on DStv are - dependant.

Viewers on the Openview platform got a scare last year after the channel suddenly went dark with the owners Nismedia having to resort to legal matters to fix the issue as eMedia breached the agreement set up between them.

Although the channel still operates on the platform for at least a couple of months and Glow TV isn't on the dependant stage. The channel is set to face even more challenges in the future should eMedia opt to not supply Glow TV.

As most of their audiences reside on the platform meaning a loss in revenue which could lead to a cutback in staff and programming and with the number of losses on StarSat it's only a matter of time till it is announced Glow TV will no longer be accessible on the platform.

When you think of the word dependant you find plenty of that on DStv's channel 251-299 as several parties had mentioned needing DStv in order to survive and such isn't often seen on a platform like StarSat as it is the closest anyone has to local is SABC 1.

This year, StarSat lost out on the retarded community/prophets channel Tshwane TV with Afrikaans stations OnseTV and InPas TV now joining the set of locals to exit the platform.

Night Of Doom is back but with a twist

Star Life, a general entertainment channel owned by Disney Star which is home to various Bollywood drama series and movies was reportedly set to air Love By Chance as a replacement to Unspoken Bond but that seemingly won't be the case.

The delayed Night Of Doom is said to replace Unspoken Bonds at the 10pm slot while as Imlie moves to the 6pm slot with Love By Chance nowhere in site or from what is seen.

All that is seen right now is Anupama, Made For Each Other, Kulfi - The Singing Star, Lost In Love, Forbidden Love and Imlie and as far as Night Of Doom is considered it's listed at episode 26 which may or may not be adjusted or an error for Love By Chance no one knows.

eExtra Vs. Glow TV: The Best Source For Bollywood Series

eExtra is general entertainment channel from eMedia Investments home to primarily telenovelas particularly Indian and Turkish. Glow TV is a South African entertainment based channel from Nismedia that has content which resonate with the Indian community.

Both these channels have Openview and StarSat in common aside from that the owners of these brands have been beefing with each other following eMedia's failed attempt and today we compare the channels that started it all.

eExtra is currently one of the top channels on Openview for their selection in Turkish dramas which brought a spinoff ePlesier. Outside of that bubble, the channel offers a ton of Bollywood dramas which don't clash with the existing offering on Glow TV.

Glow TV is SA's only Indian channel that promotes the Hindi community with not only telenovelas like eExtra but other entertainment like reality, lifestyle and local programming. It is actually one of the first channels to distribute dubbed Hindi content full-time.

The setback for eExtra has to do with distribution as some fans already noticed the channel doesn't play fair in terms of catch-up. Some shows repeat once off while others need eVOD in order for you to catch-up on what you've missed.

Glow TV's issue revolves on a similar matter repeats compared to eExtra you don't get a lot of new content and what's even more depressing is how often they place a former program in the schedule.

In regard to best channel, eExtra is your #1 source for drama series and although Glow TV has been repetitive in this region. There is plenty of entertainment you won't find on eExtra such as reality, lifestyle and local content.

Roundups #63: A Repeat Of Young Love Coming To Glow TV, MTV Africa Welcomes Another Shore Series And Survivor SA Returning This July On M-Net

More repeats

Following the possible demise of Glow TV on the Openview platform, the channel seems to be doubling down on repeats with the return of Young Love replacing A Love To Die For from 13 June.

Young Love revolves around the life of Nandini and how much the people around her influence her life. She undergoes a complicated situation because of the interference of her family in her relationship. The experience makes her believe that there is no meaning in love.

The series illustrates various challenges that lovers face. Apart from the love issue, other matters revolving around backstabbing and infidelity are some of what you will find in this show.

Survivor SA has a premiere date

The world’s greatest game returns to M-Net on Monday 18 July with plenty of familiar faces as 20 former Castaways return to right wrongs on Survivor South Africa: Return Of The Outcasts… all under the watchful gaze of Survivor host Nico Panagio.

Back in the game are a mixture of strategists, schemers, risk-takers and record-breakers from five previous Survivor South Africa seasons who’ll do anything to avoid having their torches snuffed for a second time, over a bumper four episodes a week.

“This isn’t an ‘All Stars’ season – in fact, it’s a totally unique concept,” says Executive & Creative Producer Leroux Botha. “All of the Castaways returning to the game this season have demons to lay to rest, with the added challenge of everyone knowing exactly how everyone else played their game, before”.

M-Net’s Senior Manager: Marketing and PR, Shireez Latief says that the four episode per week schedule will give Survivor SA superfans the chance to feast on what is set to be some stellar game play. “Having four hours a week to explore the full intricacy of the game is going to lay bare every machination,” she says. “It’s also a great way for newcomers to the magic of Survivor SA to get to know these returning Castaways and appreciate why they’re such masters of the game”.

Glow TV Will Likely Go Dark On Openview Without Warning, Here's Why

Glow TV is a South African based entertainment channel operated by Nismedia that celebrates Hindi culture featuring a variety of drama series, movies and reality shows. As of November 2021, the channel's only reliable outlet is StarSat as beef is still brewing between Openview's parent company, eMedia Investments.

In October 2021, the channel was suddenly snatched from the Openview platform as somewhat of a blackout with many consumers curious about the sudden termination eMedia only responded to say the contract had ended while Nismedia filed an application for breach of contract.

According to Nismedia, eMedia forcefully removed Glow TV which is unethical on many grounds as the current agreement concludes in February 2023 with that came in the court application which came back in their favour.

Glow TV was reinstated and drama bomb Zee One was introduced.

The beef between Zee Enterprises and Nismedia went public in 2018 when Glow TV was scrapped from MultiChoice's DStv due to poor viewership but Nismedia believes that the pay-tv platform was being anti-competitive and sided with Zee TV but then came the launch of Star Life.

3 years down the line, eMedia tried pull the same manouvre but couldn't just wait another 2 years. Now the Bollywood offering maintains a huge share of Openview with 3 and a quarter filled with Indian content while 8 are strictly local (Mindset and DBE included).

Of course, eMedia still views them as two and a half just browse their website or better pay careful attention to the adverts on screen and you'll see no utter mention of Glow TV implying that the channel became roadkill.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Glow TV but if there's one thing I can applaud the channel for is the mixture of content. Most channels like dramas and movies as that's where the most views are coming through. Glow TV managed to offer as much and still left space for other content like reality, lifestyle, kids shows and even local content.

Over the years, this Bollywood phenomenon has been repetitive but in my opinion I don't think that's entirely the reason for its demise but more on the competitive side of the things and also seeking a bigger brand like Zee One and Star Life.

Why This Is Love And Saras Will Likely Stop Airing On Glow TV?

As some viewers have already noticed, Glow TV has been working around the clock to save their viewership as more people opt to brands like Zee One and Star Life as there's not a lot of repeats on that station and viewers get a larger selection of drama series.

Glow TV launched amidst the time eMedia Investments launched their own STBs called Openview HD (now Openview) leveraging content from several popular brands in India including Sony, Colors TV and StarPlus while as ramping up some local productions.

Over the years, the channel has experienced some cracks in terms of management where Urban Brew Studios sold a large portion of their stake to Nismedia and programming where brands like StarPlus got a dedicated channel for the English market while Sony strengthened their bond with the enemy Zee TV.

Three years after Star Life launched, a fragment of StarPlus content primarily This Is Love can still be seen on Glow TV while series like Forbidden Passion (known to Glow TV viewers as Unforseen Love) has since then never reverted back to Glow TV as it aired on Star Life.

Implying that Glow TV's distribution contract with StarPlus is still active and could be scrapped when their agreement comes to an end meaning series like Saras and This Is Love will no longer be available for viewing by the channel.

Unlike eExtra, Glow TV doesn't play favourites with their competitors as seen with their drama series where a large chunk of the content is distributed by Colors TV with This Is Love present for StarPlus.

Star Life is rumoured to air Soulmates (known to Glow TV viewers as Saras) later in the year which was met with positive reception while criticism awaited for This Is Love which the details regarding its launch period remains undisclosed.

REPEATS!!! As Telemundo Africa Welcomes Back My Heart Beats For Lola And This Is Love Possibly Resurfaces On Star Life

During this past week, it was reported that My Heart Beats For Lola is set to replace Labour Of Love and Decisions on Telemundo while Star Life might broadcast one of their owners Star India's original productions This Is Love currently seen on Glow TV. Since then viewers expressed their disappointment with the relevant stations over these developments.

Firstly, My Heart Beats For Lola and This Is Love despite being popular amongst Africans have also been abused by the relevant parties in the number of times it flies in and out of their lineup which doesn't surprise most audiences as both brands leverage a lot of reruns in their daytime schedule.

Both brands have been working aggressively to keep viewers entertained as their primetime offering experienced a reduction in new content. For Telemundo, the reason relied heavily on super series as it costs a lot to produce content in that quality while Glow TV underwent management changes.

Glow TV was once owned by Urban Brew Studios before Nismedia took majority share of the channel. Glow TV was on the verge of closing down to its entirety across South Africa on DStv, Openview and StarSat.

All channels have repeats look at e.tv with Mr. Bones and Comedy Central with Friends, so what's wrong with seeing that on channels like Telemundo and Glow TV?

Majority of the population aren't home at times, these series are viewed and some that are available are living with family or other people who occupy the couch at times these shows manage to air on the stations.

There also the fact that there's several others who have to multitask as they have other content to watch at the times these series come on so in a way the repeats give viewers some time to watch content they've missed elsewhere.

Glow TV was removed from DStv a years back so while others explored the alternatives available to them such as Openview, StarSat and DStv Indian. There's still people that latched onto the pay-tv platform so This Is Love would benefit them.

MultiChoice gets new DStv and GOtv customers everyday and some of those consumers could have started tuning into the channel.

For those who are familiar with the shows and want it to watch it again go ahead and those who can't stand the near sight of them should explore the other alternatives that were put up for them as repeats aren't going anywhere as it is common thing around the world.

Viewership Stats For 3-10 February: Zee One Dethroned Zee World And Star Life Continues To Clash With Glow TV

Zee World and Zee One are managed by the same people so it only seemed logical for something like this to happen. The only thing that kind of ties Star Life with Glow TV is the paint used for the channel's logos and poor offering.

Zee World viewership statics goes as follows:

Bollywood Movies - 1.0
Twist Of Fate (Rerun) - 1.4
King Of Hearts (Rerun) - 1.3
My Heart Knows - 2.1
These Streets - 1.4
I Do - 1.0
Twist Of Fate - 2.9
Once There Was A King - 2.0

Total: 9,4 million (excluding repeats and movies)

Notes:
- Became the second most watched channel in that period.
- Bollywood movies and I Do hit a tie and are both the least watched.
- None of Zee World's content has less than a million views making it the only brand to do so despite being a pay channel.
- Twist Of Fate is still adored by fans of the channel on primetime even with reruns.
- Zee World has the highest viewership for reruns (2.7 million).

Geet (Rerun) - 0.7
Illusion - 0.9
Dream Girl - 1.2
Happy Hearts - 1.1
Never Say Goodbye - 1.7

Total: 4,9 million (excluding reruns and movies)

Notes
- The brand with the least watched Bollywood films I mean it's justified as there's mostly reruns.
- Star Life is the only channel with content that struggles to attract 2 million views.
- Never Say Goodbye was the most watched show during this period and Geet remains in the gutters.

Zee One viewership statics goes as follows:

Dance India Dance - 1.0
Bollywood Movie - 2.6
Grand Trunk Rasoi - 0.2
The Baker's Table - 0.2
Snack Attack - 0.1
Guddan - 2.9
Reach For The Stars - 1.4
The Heir - 0.6
Lies Of The Heart - 4.2
My Golden Home - 0.6

Total: 9,7 million (excluding repeats, movies and variety shows)

Notes
- My Golden Home and The Heir tie this month
- Snack Attack is the least watched show on the channel.
- Lies Of The Heart was the most watched show in this period.
- Zee One has more content than any other channel on the list therefore increasing their viewership.
- The only brand to have provided variety shows
- Currently has the highest rated movie
- Became the most watched channel on the list thanks to Zee World's reruns so it's a win win either way.
- Has the most content with less than a million views.

Glow TV viewership statics goes as follows:

This Is Love (Rerun) - 1.0
A Touch Of Love - 0.6
Emperor Ashoka - 2.4
A Love To Die For - 2.3
True Love (Rerun) - 0.1

Total: 5,6 million (excluding repeats)

- The only station that couldn't provide the views for Bollywood films.
- The only station with the least amount of new shows.
- Remains as the least watched Indian channel.
- Unlike Star Life, the content can attract 2 million views.
- Emperor Ahsoka was the most watched show during that period.
- The channel has the lowest rated repeat on the list (This Is Love).

Available to DStv is Zee World and Star Life while StarSat and Openview have every other channel but Zee World.
