News Shorts: A Rebroadcast Of My Identity And Along Came Love Launches On Star Life And TLNovelas Respectively, Skeem Saam On SABC 1 To Take On e.tv's Scandal This March And Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA Acquired Zig & Sharko Season 4 For Cartoonito

My Identity resurfaces on Star Life

The series explores the controversial life story of a child, Avni Ayesha, born out of wedlock. She is uncomfortable bearing the illegitimate identity that society has painted on her. As a result, Avni develops a strong determination to fight back and does not stop in her adulthood.

It will return to Star Life from 30 January replacing Sacred Relationships.
TLNovelas joins the snooze train with Along Came Love

After being deported and her father died, Luciana decides to return and meet again with the only family she has left: her mother and brother. That is why she travels to the US and shows up at the vineyard where both have worked for the past years, but when she arrives there and meets David, the landowner, she also bumps into an unexpected thing: love.

It will return to TLNovelas from 26 February replacing The Stepmother. This would serve as the first rebroadcast to have aired on the channel since Head Over Heels in 2022 so the channel is now rivalling Telemundo with their repeat padded offering.
Skeem Saam changing timeslots

For years, the SABC1 audience has made a plea, requesting to change the Skeem Saam timeslot, stating that the show timeslot is too early for some as the show broadcasts during the travelling time for a lot of the viewers.

The decision to move Skeem Saam to 19:30 is in line with SABC Video Entertainment's strategy to amplify its primetime local drama offering to its viewers from 19:30 to 21:30 with SABC1s Skeem Saam, Generations: The Legacy, Uzalo and SABC2s Muvhango.

For SABC1, we see this as an opportunity to make the channel edgier and braver and adapt to the audience's needs. The world of television is an exciting platform where we should not be afraid to adapt while upholding our responsibility to shape the youth and societal roles.
Zig & Sharko returns to Cartoonito

WBD (France, Africa), DR TV (Denmark), NRK Super (Norway), Markiza (Slovakia) and ERT (Greece) have bought Zig & Sharko season four (which premiered last fall on French broadcaster Gulli) to begin airing during Q2 to Q4 of this year. And season one is going to K+ Vietnam and Media Prima Malaysia.

Zig & Sharko launched in 2010 and revolves around a hyena’s endless attempts to capture a mermaid who is under the protection of a great white shark.

The show is performing well on Netflix, according to an engagement report released by the streamer last month. Seasons one and two of Zig & Sharko racked up 40 million hours of viewing time in the first half of 2023 on the platform.

Could The River Be Changing Channels On DStv As Champions Debuts On Mzansi Magic?

Mzansi Magic is set to rollout Champions a sports based drama starring Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Tumisho Masha, and Jo-anne Reyneke by early February. It brought various questions from consumers as the show will debut in the timeslot of The River.

As several readers are aware, MultiChoice will be axing both 1Magic and Me prior to Champions debut. For several days, media outlets had been wondering how MultiChoice plans to retain their black premium audience as 1Magic serves as the M-Net's BET channel.

In ongoing conversations with the pay-tv company, it had been mentioned a replacement channel for specifically 1Magic was in development but no word on Me. Leading us to believe that M-Net and MultiChoice could be looking to merge these two channels.

Compact+ has been declining in linear consumption for several years as MultiChoice moves channels like ESPN 2 and Comedy Central to lower tailored bouquets. If anything, it's only a matter of time till MultiChoice opts to discontinue or fold it onto premium.

Although the content for this rumoured channel has yet to be confirmed, we presume M-Net could try to make it a more independent tier from Me as seen with 1Magic at the time. This channel would be the exclusive home to The Real Housewives alongside Beat Shazam and Bel-Air.

If possible from what other outlets presume, they could burn off The River onto this channel making Mzansi Magic the premier destination for local content while brands like Mzansi Wethu serve as the backburner.

Showmax had been producing various content that would often fold under Mzansi Magic. Perhaps, MultiChoice will look at redirecting these shows should a replacement channel be in the works.

Early reception never mentioned a replacement, if anything fans of local dramas on 1Magic would migrate to Mzansi Magic with selected content from Me on Universal TV. But when you look at it doesn't seem far fetched as M-Net also offers content you won't find elsewhere.

Me despite how the channel was perceived is very much necessity to DStv consumers. How else are consumers going to view shows like Summertide or Kitchen Rules SA I mean they could as well transmit on Mzansi Wethu to give the channel purpose to the Compact household.

The Brand-New Documentary Of Gwyneth vs Terry: The Ski Crash Trial Premieres On TLC South Africa On Sunday, 21 January

On the 26th of February 2016, Gwyneth Paltrow and Terry Sanderson collided on the ski slopes of Utah, USA. In the aftermath, Terry Sanderson sued Gwyneth Paltrow for over $300,000 in damages. It was a case of her word against his: who was at fault for the devastating crash? Battling it out in court, it was a celebrity trial that split public opinion. ‘Essentially the only two people in this world who know the truth are Gwyneth Paltrow and Terry Sanderson,’ as Legal Commentator Terri Austin puts it, ‘determining who was the uphill skier and who was the downhill skier is the $300,000 question in this case’.

Now, the sensational trial of Sanderson vs. Paltrow is laid out to bare in the brand-new documentary Gwyneth vs Terry: The Ski Crash Trial (available on TLC South Africa @ 22:00 CAT on Sunday, 21 January). With unique access to key players in the story, including a juror from the trial and key witnesses, this documentary provides the inside story of one of the most talked about legal cases of 2023. Who caused the fateful collision is then hotly contested and leads to an eight-day trial watched by the world, Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow or retired optometrist Terry Sanderson? It’s a rare case of a civilian in a legal battle with a celebrity.  Two compelling polar opposite viewpoints that ask the viewer to decide - who was to blame?

Samantha Imrie, a juror in the trial, recalls the moment she became involved in the case: “At the beginning of 2023, I received an email telling me that I needed to go to jury selection. I was very concerned it was going to be murder or a child abuse case in which I would have had a really challenging time. When I was in jury selection, they said, ‘This is Sanderson vs Paltrow,’ and I didn’t really put together that this was Gwyneth Paltrow.” As the trial began, all became clear: as journalist Daniel Bates describes the scene, “Terry Sanderson’s allegation was that, essentially, his accident was an inflexion point in his life; before he was outgoing, he was sociable. Afterwards, he described it as living a completely different life.” Speaking exclusively in the documentary, Sanderson’s ex-partner Karlene Davidson recalls the day of the fateful crash, where Sanderson wasn’t initially aware of who the other person in the collision was.  “At the time, he didn’t know; I don’t believe he said Gwyneth Paltrow; he didn’t know who it was,” she says. “He just said, ‘I had been hit on the hill. He was definitely hurt more than he was letting on.”

On the other side of the case was renowned actress and entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow. “She’s known all over the world. She’s got this massive fortune through GOOP, her luxury wellness brand. It didn’t seem like a fair fight,” Bates suggests. “Terry Sanderson wasn’t able to hire a crack medical malpractice team. Gwyneth Paltrow’s lawyers were absolutely vicious.” Bates also notes Paltrow's advantages over Sanderson, “She knew it was being televised. She’s been in front of a camera before; she understands how it works.” However, as personal injury attorney Ruth Shapiro points out, Paltrow, like any other human being, wouldn’t have been immune to the stresses of facing a potentially career-damaging trial. “It's not a relaxing situation to be in a court before a jury, no matter if you’re a Golden Globe or Academy Award winner, it's still nerve-racking,” she says. Bates also describes how the trial must have taken its toll on Paltrow, as she always aimed to put family first above living in the limelight. “Her priorities have been family, GOOP, and you see that from her posts on Instagram, I think for her it’s more important to be there, be a mum, be around her kids, and not necessarily be a ‘walking the red carpet’ celebrity.”

As the trial began to gain traction on social media, tensions continued to build in the courtroom. As shown in courtroom footage included in the documentary, Paltrow describes her side of events of the accident on the witness stand. “I was skiing, and two skis came between my skis, forcing my legs apart,” she states, “and then there was a body pressing against me.” Reflecting on the courtroom proceedings that she witnessed firsthand, court juror Samantha Imrie argues that Paltrow was sympathetic towards Sanderson despite insisting she wasn’t at fault for the collision. “Gwyneth Paltrow did not seem dismissive to Terry’s injuries or anything caused by the accident; however, she was very clear that this accident was not her fault,” she says.

Indeed, the impact the crash had on Sanderson was life-changing, as his ex-partner Karlene Davidson shares. “He became like an old man; he didn’t want to do anything anymore; he felt like he wasn’t capable or just didn’t feel good about it. His joy was gone,” she says. Not only did the accident alter Sanderson’s outlook on life, but also, ultimately, his relationship, as Davidson adds. “He pulled away and pushed me away to almost save me from having to deal with whatever was going on with him,” she says. “I didn’t want that relationship to end; I could've stayed with the man that I adored.”

As the jury began to sympathise with Sanderson’s position, the case began to swing when Paltrow’s lawyer, Stephen Owens, revealed shocking evidence that suggested Sanderson’s life wasn’t falling away at the seams as he claimed, as court reporter Julia Jenae explains. “Owens has pictures of Terry on trips from all of these different countries, and he was able to show him happy and enjoying himself,” she says. “The picture that was painted, this man that was unable to travel, unable to function, didn’t have friends, yet he’s travelling the world; it didn’t add up.” However, Sanderson’s neurologist Alina Fong later testifies that he travelled on her advice, “that was part of his recovery, to get back to travel and get back to some semblance of an increased quality of life.” His ex-partner, Davidson, believes that it was an unfair trial from the beginning, sensationally claiming that status and politics were at the centre of the trial. Despite the Court’s efforts to screen jurors for bias, she believes that “the jury had to be slanted in their opinions. They were skiers and part of the Deer Valley community. Park City didn’t want to lose their celebrity status of stars coming.”

On the 30th of March 2023, the Jury came to a decision. For Samantha Imrie, the pressure of reaching a fair and just conclusion was intense. “During these eight days, I have never felt such a heavy weight on my shoulders knowing I’d have to go through all this evaluation and determine who was lying and who was telling the truth,” she says.  However, it only took two hours for the jury to reach a conclusion, assigning one hundred percent of the fault to Sanderson. As Imrie describes, with all the evidence taken into consideration, it was an open and shut case. “It was almost black and white at the end, and there was no way the collision could have happened in the way that Terry Sanderson was saying that it had happened.”

Despite the verdict, questions remain as to the level playing field of a celebrity versus civilian civil case, as attorney Bruce Pritchett argues. “One of the factors that weighed into the disparity in the case was that she had more money and resources to litigate the case with,” he says. As the trial came to an end, Jenae recalled the now-iconic moment as the legal parties exited the courtroom, with Paltrow leaning over to Sanderson and whispering to him. It was a clip widely covered on both social media and by the international press. “She walked over past the plaintiff’s table, she leaned over, whispered something in Terry Sanderson’s ear and then she left.” Sanderson later revealed in a post-trial interview that Paltrow said, ‘I wish you well...’

Rumour: 1Magic (And Possible Me) To Be Replaced/Merged Onto Another TV Channel On DStv

Update: the channels will close 31 March 2024 and for an updated statement: click here
MultiChoice is set to axe an additional two channels by early February, 1Magic and Me. The pay-tv company remains discrete on further information pertaining to these brands and have gone as far as hiding this news from DStv consumers until later this week.

In ongoing conversations with the pay-tv company, it was revealed that 1Magic will be replaced with another channel unlike Me. Considering that these terminations sort of affect consumers on the Family and Compact bouquet it's likely that this channel will be accessible to them.

Following the cancellation of 1Magic, there had been questions pertaining on how MultiChoice intended to distribute The Real Housewives and retain their black premium subscribers who'd view content like Power Book 4: Force Beat Shazam and 1802: Love Defies Time.

As I hypothesised in early stories, MultiChoice and M-Net are probably looking to substitute 1Magic (and possible Me) with a more robust offering. M-Net is filtered to the audience of SABC 3 and 1Magic was one way they could position themselves to SABC 1 and Mzansi Magic.

If anything, it's likely that this channel will offer the best of Me and 1Magic (which were basically VUZU and M-Net City) in one space. That is if all this turns out to be accurate, as mentioned they are looking to officially update consumers later this week on the fate of these channels.

New Channel Alert: Africa's First Housing Channel Debuts On StarTimes Channel 149, To Launch On DStv By March 2024

During the month, Nigeria’s leading affordable housing advocate, Festus Adebayo had announced the establishment of a first of its kind African home channel, Housing TV Africa. It is set to take on brands like HGTV and The Home Channel with a curated local offering.

According to a press statement, the purpose of establishing Housing TV Africa on StarTimes Channel 149 is basically to bring awareness campaigns down to various homes in Africa.

He further stated that the TV channel was to be extended to DStv before the end of 2023, until it was delayed to March 2024. Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa would have marketed the launch on the pay-tv platform had it launched earlier.

Housing TV Africa will have 65% housing related contents, leaving the remaining 35% to contents around educative, political, sports, religion, entertainment, among others. Basically, it will not only be duplicating The Home Channel but Soweto TV as well.

In other developments, MultiChoice will be axing both 1Magic and Me from the DStv platform by early February. They served as M-Net's remaining linear offering to boost an extensive line-up of international content with the latter now folded under existing linear channels and Showmax.

Live-Action Danny Phantom Film Is Reportedly In Development

An iconic animated series may soon be making its way back to our screens in a new form. According to insider Daniel Richtman, a live-action Danny Phantom film is in development at Paramount.

Danny Phantom is an animated series that first premiered on Nickelodeon in 2004, netting fifty-three episodes across three seasons. Created by Butch Hartman (The Fairly OddParents), the series followed the adventures of a teenager named Danny Fenton, who gains various superpowers like flight and invisibility after an accident in his ghost-hunting obsessed parents' laboratory. Despite his initial hesitation, Danny eventually learns to embrace his powers and commits to becoming a superhero to defend his family, friends Tucker Foley and Sam Manson, and hometown from the threat of malevolent ghosts from the Ghost Zone.

The show bears many similarities to Sony's Ghostbusters, including some of the equipment used in the series, as well as Marvel's Spider-Man series, with both protagonists forced to juggle the responsibilities of being a superhero along with the everyday mundanities of being a teenager. This timeless formula proved to be a success as Danny Phantom has retained a solid following since its finale aired well over a decade ago.

Although the series ended in 2007, Danny Phantom has remained in the hearts of fans, and has seen a few comebacks in recent years, including most recently as characters in the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl franchise as well as a graphic novel, "A Glitch In Time".

Ricthman did not reveal any further information about the film, such as a creative team or potential timeline. It seems the project is still in very early development; it may be some time before any additional news regarding the movie is announced. It remains to be seen if the film will receive a theatrical release or premiere on Paramount+.

Interestingly, Grey DeLisle (The Loud House), who provided the voice of 'Sam' in Danny Phantom, hinted back in 2016 that Nickelodeon were planning to make a live-action Danny Phantom movie.

The news also comes as Nickelodeon is revisiting many of its iconic properties, including the recently released Zoey 102 and Good Burger 2 movies, as well as revivals of Fairly OddParents and iCarly. Nickelodeon has also rebooted Rugrats and Blue's Clues, and will be launching its rebooted Dora the Explorer series later this year, along with a The Thundermans revival movie. A Henry Danger movie is also in the works, as well as new Avatar: The Last Airbender projects.

It's important to note that, at the time of posting, nothing official has been confirmed so far, so it's worth taking it all with a pinch of salt.
