After 4 Years, Universal Kids Rolls Out Internationally Through Asia As A Placeholder For Disney Channel, Could DStv Follow In The Pursuit? + Could A Rebrand Be On The Cards For The DreamWorks Channel?

NBCUniversal launched Universal Kids four years ago with content aimed at 2 to 11 year olds ranging from DreamWorks Animation, unscripted entertainment, live action shows and international programming.

Since launch, the channel has seen a significant decrease in viewership with IndieWire reporting a 30% decline in 2017, followed by a 73% drop in 2018. With the channel pulling roughly 36000 viewers as it slowly gains more viewers.

Just like Universal TV in the U.S.
Despite its poor viewership, Universal Kids was able to launch in Asia making it the first international market to have a Universal Kids on top of DreamWorks Channel where some of its content is seen.

Of course, it couldn't come at a better time seeing that The Walt Disney Company is closing 100 international channels by the end of 2021 as they opt to streaming.

DreamWorks Channel which has been seen as the international counterpart of Universal Kids (until now) has experienced immense growth in distribution with StarTimes being the only provider in Africa to supply the channel.

Seeing that Asia carries both brands, Is it possible the same could be done in Africa likely through MultiChoice's DStv?

MultiChoice offer several price plans for DStv with each have that pillar they leverage of from to get consumers to stick with that particular product.

In this case, Disney Channel was that pillar for certain consumers. So the logical thing to do would be to source out a brand that can carry similar traits such as Universal Kids or risk losing consumers.

Peacock Kids: The Future Of Universal Kids And DreamWorks Channel
NBCUniversal hosts a streaming service called Peacock which is where the name of the kids division, Peacock Kids derives from.

Peacock Kids was first spotted on YouTube when the brand took the spot of DreamWorks Channel with the page also including clips of live-action content.

NBCUniversal has 3 kids brands in total
1. Peacock Kids - for the streamers since 2020 leveraging from the other two
2. Universal Kids - exclusive to the U.S. until 2021
3. DreamWorks Channel - available outside the U.S. since 2015

Universal TV is still there despite its termination in the U.S. and Peacock's presence so maybe Universal Kids and DreamWorks Channel will continue or merge into one station regardless the American one is on autopilot.

ViacomCBS Now Offers Telenovelas After Acquiring Majority Stake In Disney's TeleColombia And Estudios TeleMexico

ViacomCBS said its ViacomCBS Networks International has clinched a deal to acquire a majority stake in Spanish language content producer, Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico from Disney and the company’s founding family.

ViacomCBS International Studios, a division of VCNI, will operate Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico as a collaborative partnership with the founders. Financial terms weren’t released. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

Through this transaction, VCNI will gain access to Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico’s studio operations in both Colombia and Mexico, as well as many hours of library content, which is comprised of multifaceted entertainment spanning multiple key genres including premium series, telenovelas, films, documentaries, unscripted, kids and family, branded and digital content and live sports shows produced for various audiences.

This content will fuel ViacomCBS’ global streaming platforms including Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and its linear networks around the world. Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico will also bolster ViacomCBS’ Spanish language content production capabilities to capitalize on significant content demand in the region and worldwide.

This transaction combined with VCNI’s existing portfolio in Latin America, which includes VIS’ studio business and broadcasters Telefe in Argentina and the recently acquired ChilevisiĆ³n in Chile, will position ViacomCBS as one of the leading Spanish-language content production companies in the world, the comapny said.

The deal “reinforces the company’s position as a leading worldwide producer of Spanish-language content,” said Raffaele Annecchino, President and CEO, ViacomCBS Networks International. “This content will fuel ViacomCBS’ global ecosystem across Paramount+, Pluto TV and its linear networks.”

Samuel Duque Rozo, founder and CEO of the company, will continue to exclusively support the business from a creative and strategic advisory position, and Samuel Duque Duque, current president, will lead the business. Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico will fall under the remit of Juan “JC” Acosta, president of ViacomCBS International Studios and Networks Americas.

The acquisition joins ViacomCBS’ Latin American portfolio, which includes two free-to-air broadcasters, Telefe in Argentina and ChilevisiĆ³n in Chile, Paramount+; Pluto TV; ViacomCBS International Studios production hubs, YouTubec comedy channel Porta dos Fundos, and branded pay TV networks including MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Comedy Central, and consumer products.

New Series Alert: Die Put Coming Soon To eVOD

November looks to be the forefront of new telenovelas from eMedia's stable. Earlier in the month, it was announced that the Indian drama The Heir alongside the Afrikaans dubbed Turkish drama Wrede Stad will make their way to eExtra.

Apparently, there's a new international Emmy nominated action drama making their way to eMedia's streaming service eVOD titled Die Put.

Die Put (Ƈukur), run by a noble mafia family called KoƧovali. When the family is in danger of losing control over The Put. Their youngest son must return to his home where he could never escape.

Since its publication, Die Put has been among the most complained works on TV. RTƜK imposed administrative fines on the channel where the series was broadcast due to scenes of armed conflict, fear, violence and torture.

With that in mind, eMedia will likely have to air it weekdays at 21:30 on eExtra or 23:00 through e.tv seeing that none of the shows allocated there air in the daytime meaning no lawsuit.

For now viewers can 10 episodes of this Turkish drama weekly on eVOD from Tuesday 2nd November alongside Impak which debuted a few weeks ago.

You can find me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. You can also follow Doodsondes for Kuiertyd updates.

NBA Moves From e.tv To SABC Sport With An Expanded Lineup: More Reasons To Believe eMedia Is Slowly Doing Away With The News & Sports Channel

The South African Broadcasting Corporation through SABC Sport is pleased to announce an exciting multiyear television broadcast rights agreement with the National Basketball Association (NBA). As part of the partnership, SABC Sport will air more than 35 games throughout the season, including a Christmas game, NBA All-star Saturday Night, Conference Finals and The Finals, broadcast live or delayed, on SABC 1 and The SABC Sport Channel on DTT, TelkomOne and Openview. In addition the SABC will host a weekly magazine show "NBA Action" which covers the league's news and highlights.

The first live broadcast will kick off with a pre-game live studio presentation at 22:30 on Saturday, 30 October. Followed by the inaugural live broadcast of the 75th Anniversary Season where the Washington Wizards will host the Boston Celtics.

Due to time difference between South Africa and the United States, the live or delayed broadcasts will start between 20:00 and midnight on the same Saturday on SABC 1 and The Sport Channel.

e.tv once held rights to NBA for several years and often used News & Sport for reruns and highlights before it sudden departure from their stable.

Since the launch of SABC Sport, Openview has been creating more hype for the channel which led to speculation that News and Sport would soon be reduced to ashes.

As seen above, it looks like the SABC will be leveraging content from the News and Sport channel as eMedia seems to be diverting their focus away from sports. Not long ago, the channel stopped broadcasting La Liga.

Impact Wrestling Ain't Changing Houses

Amidst their possible exit from sport, Impact Wrestling has been added onto eVOD so it seems probable that sports may not be wiped out entirely or at not wrestling.

Over the years, wrestling has been viewed not only as a sport but general entertainment. Unlike other sports, wrestling resorts to storylines and gives each wrestler a persona to start rivalries and get viewers pumped for the action.

WWE could have some involvement with Impact's freedom from execution seeing that it once aired on e.tv as indicated below:

"Africa has always been a strong market for IMPACT Wrestling, where our passionate fans continue to engage with our content on multiple platforms,” said Ed Nordholm, Chief Corporate Officer of Anthem Sports & Entertainment and president of IMPACT Wrestling. “We are thrilled to bring professional wrestling back to e.tv, where the sport has a long history and track record of success.”

“e.tv is proud to be the home of Impact Wrestling across Sub-Saharan Africa. We received enormous traction from having aired wrestling (WWE) on our channels a few years ago, and it is only befitting that we bring back content that highly resonates with our audience. We hope to build the IMPACT Wrestling brand on our multi-channel platforms for many years to come,” added Marlon Davids, MD, echannels.

In future, we could actually see the content be transmitted on e.tv and especially eExtra now that the whole streamlining has reduced the reruns on the channel.

You can find me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. You can also follow Doodsondes for Kuiertyd updates.

THE INDIANS ARE COMING, THE INDIANS ARE COMING!!! As Zee Enterprises Launches Additional Channels To StarTimes, Openview And MultiChoice's DStv

Earlier in the month, it was announced through several media outlets that WION would make their way to DStv later this month which might have been pushed to November.

Not only that Zee Cinema which is currently available on StarTimes might make their way to the pay-tv giant as they've seemingly started testing out the channel.

Amidst the losses of several international channels part of it due to the rise in streaming. MultiChoice has been investing in more African production to fill that gap while StarTimes hasn't done much throughout the year or at least not until now.

According to sources, StarTimes is set to add three channels Zee TV, Zee One and Zee Tamil from Zee Enterprises which will likely anger some consumers seeing that they already have an extensive lineup of Bollywood entertainment not to mention these channels don't offer anything similar to the channels lost.

Zee TV which is currently available on DStv serves as a Hindi entertainment channel offering a variety of series and movies while Zee Tamil is like the main channel except in another language with its own programming.

Zee One which is very likely adapted from the German counterpart copied Zee World and dubbed their programming. My guess would be the revived version will cater for English viewers which would serve as a rival to Zee World on DStv seeing that it will likely come as a repeats channel.

Basically, MultiChoice and StarTimes are introducing three different channels (as mentioned) while one platform has all theirs coming from India the other adds Me as an accessory in this Indian extravaganza.

Zee One will also be added to Openview despite having eExtra having content from the channel which leads to the question on what is gonna happen to the content on there.

You can find me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Updated: Utsav Next Target Could Be The Star Channels Currently On DStv, StarSat, Zuku TV And Openview + Disney Channel And Disney Junior Could Go Off Air Sooner Than Expected As Disney Shifts Its Focus Towards Streaming

Later this week, Disney and Star in India announced that they would exit from the English general entertainment industry which resulted in the termination of most of their channels with Hindi channels taking their spot.

The Walt Disney Company revealed plans to close 100 international Disney channels before the FY22 with more Disney Channels expected to close in Europe as streaming looks to be the brands top priority.

The likely reason for Star's demise is due to Disney+ since The Walt Disney Company took the Star branding for their streaming service so Star India keeping it for English viewers would only cause confusion.

Earlier this year, the UK & Europe rebranded their Star channels to Utsav with the changes applicable to viewers of those regions. Of course, there's several signs that the branding will be duplicated in more countries.

Vijay TV is the only channel internationally to use that adapt to that branding and Star India is seemingly testing out the Utsav branding through the StarPlus and Star Gold channel in Africa.

Star Life being the only English channel in Africa will have to create some distance from Star India or join the party seeing that they're exiting the audience it's catered for.

The European counterpart manages the Star channels in Africa so it seems logical for the Utsav branding to enter the region the question would have to be why delay the switch, could Star Life have some involvement perhaps?

The Disney Africa Facebook page stopped promoting content from Disney Channel and moved it to the Disney Africa Channels page (formerly Disney Junior Africa) with the main page likely to be used as a portal to promote Disney+.

The UK, Asia, Italy and Australia already lost Disney Channel and Disney Junior so it doesn't seem far fetched to think the same fate awaits the Disney Channels in Africa.

The Walt Disney Company is set out to be another Netflix. Even if that means cutting the cord of several channels in markets where cable is dominating the circuit.

In November, Disney Channel and Disney Junior have seemingly hit the reruns button with the main channel airing reruns of Gigantosaurus.
