eMedia's 4 Channels Recieve Another Extension On MultiChoice's DStv, Might Go Dark By August 2024

Since 2022, eMedia Investments and MultiChoice had been undergoing a carriage dispute with the Competition Tribunal. After the p...

DStv Updates: KIX Replaces eMovies And eMovies Extra On The Family And Access Packages, DreamWorks Channel Replaces Disney XD And eToonz, A New Movie Channel Is Coming Soon And Easyview Customers Lose Two More Channels

Following the unexpected terminations of eMedia Investments four TV channels primarily eToonz, eExtra, eMovies and eMovies Extra from 1st April. The pay-tv platform has shared some new developments for DStv customers.

First was the overhyped animated channel from NBCUniversal DreamWorks Channel which makes up 90% of eToonz lineup will take up the space of Disney XD on channel 304 after two years. It launched in 2020 on the sinking pay platform StarSat and StarTimes across Africa.

tvN pushing to become a permanent linear channel in Africa
Could Nicktoons be discontinued in Africa and likely the rest of the world?
Multichoice won't be adding anymore community channels
Kwara TV might launch on DStv

Here's the catch while eToonz was available on the cheapest package Easyview in South Africa the DreamWorks Channel will only be available to Compact+ customers in the rest of Africa with South Africa likely bundling it on Compact.

Family and Access customers will get 1 movie channel to make up for the loss of eMovies which is karate skewed channel KIX while MultiChoice confirms details of the second movie channel launching later in the year.

Easyview customers which had Access to half of these channels aren't getting anything even if they did. The likelihood is that MultiChoice won't bother mentioning it to the media. TNT and Real Time are so far the only valuable channels on there.

Details of a new movie channel was rumoured for the platform for almost a year now to think that it had some involvement with these channels. Not gonna speculate but several names were thrown in the air one of which were FilmBox.

FilmBox is owned by Timeless Dizi Channel's parent company SPI International which is pretty much the AMC of the company with cheesy movies and a little dash of series but less old fashioned.

By looking at all this info I doubt MultiChoice will reconsider and eMedia Investments will take their chances and deal with the loss of revenue. In the end, I can see eExtra and probably eToonz return as eMovies had plenty existing from DStv just like eReality.

Here's some predictions:

- MultiChoice adds either Novela Magic or Telemundo onto the Easyview package.
- PBS Kids or Da Vinci Kids will also be made available to the Easyview platform.
- Zee World is made available to Access customers.
- A new or returning channel launches to make up for eExtra likely Timeless Dizi Channel and tvN but on the Compact and Family package.

MultiChoice Will No Longer Carry On DStv: eExtra, eMovies, eMovies Extra And eToonz

After 5 years, MultiChoice has decided to scrap majority of the channels provided by eMedia Investments including eExtra, eToonz, eMovies and eMovies Extra which can also be seen on the Openview platform with eExtra on StarSat.

MultiChoice hasn't stated why exactly they're parting ways with the channels and leaving viewers to just e.tv and eNCA as the company is set to rollout a new kids channel DreamWorks Channel which is set to carry majority of the content already available on eToonz.

eMedia Investments has experienced their frustration with the pay-tv platform on multiple occasions. Around the time, MultiChoice included their channels they apparently reduced their carriage fees and pay SABC and Newzrooom Afrika more money even though eNCA was the most watched news channel.

The closures of these channels will be a major loss to DStv customers particularly those on the Access especially Easyview platform which has nothing left aside from TNT and Real Time.

According to sources, MultiChoice was looking into adding more channels but no one is sure if these possible new channels have anything to do with the closures of these 4 brands. Customers will probably have to rely up to see if there's any chance that the company will change their minds.

Viewers will need get Openview if they wish to continue viewing all the telenovelas, movies and cartoons available on those channels or rely on e.tv for the most part and upgrade to a higher platform to view the animation on eToonz.

SABC Encore Being Used As A Catch-Up Channel For Live Sports, Could This Be A Possible Hint On What To Expect From The Possible Revival?

Two years ago, SABC Encore ceased transmission on MultiChoice's DStv and since then several developments involving the channel went down. From hosting a memorial service for Tshepo Tsola to broadcasting CAF games all this coming from revamped SABC Encore channel.

It's evident that the public broadcaster hasn't given up on the brand and believe it could be of value to other consumers than it was on DStv as they've left a spot open for the channel on DTT and distribute the pop-up on TelkomOne.

As mentioned much earlier, SABC Encore broadcasted CAF games and a memorial service, content which is not that old as seen before with DStv customers so could it be possible that maybe the revival will be slightly different.

Instead of rehashing content from the 80s to 00s, SABC Encore will be no different to the Rewind channel currently packaged on the Openview platform which supplies content that has already or is currently being viewed on other stations.

Not too long ago, Rewind was more like SABC Encore but with a mixture of both local and international programming. As years went by, it became a catch-up channel kind of like eMedia's other brands eToonz.

Repeats don't often get high ratings especially if you live in 2022 where you have a brand like SABC 1 broadcast content from the time it was simply known as TV1. It's the reason you don't see Rewind airing old series like Madam & Eve and Backstage.

In the next financial period, the public broadcaster plans to launch more HD channels one of which possibly being SABC Encore as they did broadcast CAF and who'd want to watch that in poor quality. Time will only tell if this revival would be of any use to consumers or be treated in the same manner as its DStv counterpart.

As some viewers have already noticed, Glow TV has been working around the clock to save their viewership as more people opt to brands like Zee One and Star Life as there's not a lot of repeats on that station and viewers get a larger selection of drama series.

Glow TV launched amidst the time eMedia Investments launched their own STBs called Openview HD (now Openview) leveraging content from several popular brands in India including Sony, Colors TV and StarPlus while as ramping up some local productions.

Over the years, the channel has experienced some cracks in terms of management where Urban Brew Studios sold a large portion of their stake to Nismedia and programming where brands like StarPlus got a dedicated channel for the English market while Sony strengthened their bond with the enemy Zee TV.

Three years after Star Life launched, a fragment of StarPlus content primarily This Is Love can still be seen on Glow TV while series like Forbidden Passion (known to Glow TV viewers as Unforseen Love) has since then never reverted back to Glow TV as it aired on Star Life.

Implying that Glow TV's distribution contract with StarPlus is still active and could be scrapped when their agreement comes to an end meaning series like Saras and This Is Love will no longer be available for viewing by the channel.

Unlike eExtra, Glow TV doesn't play favourites with their competitors as seen with their drama series where a large chunk of the content is distributed by Colors TV with This Is Love present for StarPlus.

Star Life is rumoured to air Soulmates (known to Glow TV viewers as Saras) later in the year which was met with positive reception while criticism awaited for This Is Love which the details regarding its launch period remains undisclosed.

Roundups #24: Several Companies Including WarnerMedia, Sony And Disney Halt Theatrical Releases In Russia, UEFA And FIFA Banned For Russia Until Further Notice And Tellytrack Is Now Available On Gallop TV As The Brand Parts Ways With DStv Yet Russia Today (RT) Can Still Be Seen Across Africa

Theatrical releases has been paused in Russia

"Given the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the tragic humanitarian crisis, we are pausing the release of theatrical films in Russia, including the upcoming 'Turning Red' from Pixar," Disney said in a statement to Insider. "We will make future business decisions based on the evolving situation."

The announcement makes Disney the first major Hollywood studio to stop releases in Russia in response to President Vladimir Putin's attack. Global sports associations and businesses in other industries have also severed relations with the country.

"Turning Red" was slated to open on March 10 in Russia. In the US, the Pixar animation is set to debut exclusively on streaming service Disney+ on March 11, but a theatrical release was planned for countries that don't have the service — like Russia.

Soon after Disney's announcement, Warner Media said it would stop the release of "The Batman" in Russia, just several days before the film's theatrical debut on March 3.

Sony followed suit, saying it was also "pausing" theatrical releases in Russia, including the debut of its upcoming movie "Morbius," which is scheduled to open on April 1.

Sports has also been paused in Russia

In a joint statement the two organisations said: “Fifa and Uefa have decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both Fifa and Uefa competitions until further notice.

“These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the Fifa Council and the Executive Committee of Uefa, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters. Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”

Uefa also announced a second highly significant move, confirming that it had cancelled a long-standing and highly lucrative sponsorship deal with Gazprom. The Russian gas company had been a sponsor of the Champions League for a decade and the final of this year’s competition was to have been played in the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg.

Last week Uefa moved the match to Paris, however, and has now severed the relationship entirely. “Uefa has today decided to end its partnership with Gazprom across all competitions,” a statement said. “The decision is effective immediately and covers all existing agreements including the Uefa Champions League, Uefa national team competitions and Uefa Euro 2024.”

Why is Russia Today still available on DStv as there's more closures across the globe?

A moment of silence arrived for Tellytrack when the channel was shuttered on the DStv platform across Africa for the horseracing lifestyle channel Racing240 as viewers put more focus on the Russian based brand, Russia Today (RT).

MultiChoice hasn't removed Russia's RT propaganda channel in the way that other pay-TV operators in the world have done and with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission receiving complaints from DStv subscribers, MultiChoice says it has no control over RT.

Meanwhile a DStv subscriber Jared Myroff has started an online petition, directed to MultiChoice CEO Calvo Mawela and the pay-TV operator's chairperson Imtiaz Patel, imploring MultiChoice to remove RT from DStv.

More than 20 local providers from Poland, Australia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Canada, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, Germany, as well as representatives of international corporations have already responded to the request," 1+1 Media Group said in a press release even YouTube blocked the brand from generating revenue.

Cancellations: eVOD Customers Bid Farewell To Free Data From MTN While Viewers On Mzansi Magic Are Saddened By The Sudden Cancellation Of The Queen

It was nice while it lasted

A few hours before March, MTN sent notice to customers to informing them that they'll need to buy data to continue viewing or risk missing the bulk of content coming to eVOD as follows:

Y'ello! The 4GB monthly promotion will end on the 1st of March 2022. Thereafter, standard data charges will apply when using eVOD. Thank you for supporting eVOD

As stated since launch, the 4GB data was added as part of a promotion which was initially set to end on January before being pushed a month later. Consumers who relied on the 4GB and possibly paid the monthly premiums will likely cancel.

The Queen comes to a close on Mzansi Magic

The Queen has reportedly been cancelled after being on air for seven years. Apparently the current season is the last season of the Mzansi Magic telenovela. Shona and Connie Ferguson's ‘The Queen’ has reportedly been cancelled.

The show is likely to end this year. The soapie was one of the best shows in Mzansi when its late producer Shona Ferguson was still alive. It has been struggling to pull in the numbers since his passing.

Brenda Ngxoli leaves 'The Queen' after 3 years of playing Noma over alleged salary disputes Shona's wife Connie Ferguson has been trying her best to act while producing the show while still mourning the death of the love of her life. Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela reports that the show will not be renewed for another season.

DreamWorks Channel makes a move on DStv

DreamWorks Channel has been one of the most anticipated channels on our site not because we love cartoons but the large bulk of eToonz available on the station I mean NBCUniversal chose to distribute the content to several other outlets so it was bound to happen.

It seems as if MultiChoice will be putting this on the most expensive packages as seen in ROA where the channel will be made available to Compact+ customers while Compact customers in South Africa will likely get it in HD.

Nickelodeon is seen as a Compact+ channel in South Africa while the rest of Africa can view it on Compact so the idea of it being added to the Compact package doesn't seem far fetched.

Another coincidence is the 4 pop-up channels introduced in 2020 alongside Me in 2021. Weren't they viewable on the Family package in South Africa while the rest of Africa needed the Compact bouquet.
