TelkomOne Rebranding Into SABC+

Telkom is exiting the streaming media business. The telecommunications operator has agreed to “hand over” its TelkomOne platform to the SABC, which will rename it SABC+.

The TelkomOne website has been taken down and replaced with this message: “Your TelkomOne entertainment service will be temporarily unavailable until Thursday, 17 November 2022… Watch this space for a new and exciting announcement.” Meanwhile, the website www.sabcplus.com has gone live.

“Telkom and the SABC have had a successful partnership since the launch of TelkomOne in late 2020. The platform has now matured and ready to scale under the management of the SABC’s broadcasting expertise,” Telkom said in a statement.

Telkom and the SABC have had a successful partnership since the launch of TelkomOne in late 2020.

“Their expertise in sourcing and curating relevant content will enrich the current content library for existing and new customers,” said Telkom chief marketing officer Gugu Mthembu in the statement.

The entire customer base will be shifted over the SABC.

“We will continue to evolve to our digital lifestyle provider ambition through our investments in areas such as content, fintech, gaming and IoT by partnering with strategic partners to deliver products and services that create a better life for our customers,” Mthembu said.

Telkom said existing TelkomOne Amp customers with active subscriptions will automatically have access to SABC+ at no additional cost. “They can also look forward to enhanced content offerings which they can subscribe to directly through SABC+.”

Background

Telkom and SABC launched TelkomOne is November 2020 to house the public broadcaster’s free-to-air radio and television channels on a streaming platform.

The deal, which had a five-year term, would “showcase South Africa’s most-watched TV programmes and most listened-to radio platforms, on one online platform”, the companies said at the time.

The SABC agreed to provide its content to Telkom on a non-exclusive basis. In exchange, the SABC would receive a carriage licence fee as well as a share in the advertising revenue generated on the TelkomOne platform.

Sprout Is Dead But Still Lives On Through DreamWorks Junior

Sprout was a preschool channel NBCUniversal acquired from PBS, Sesame Workshop and HiT Entertainment from the period of 2011-2013. Under the new ownership, the channel increased investment toward original programming.

The channel went to experiment with its offering by sourcing more half hours for older preschool audiences with shows like Noddy: Toyland Detective, Floogals, Kipper, LazyTown, The Wiggles, Poppy Cat, Nina's World and Justin Time.

In 2017, it was announced that Sprout would become serve as programming block to Universal Kids a new channel that wanted to aim toward older children with shows like Bajillionaires, Hank Zipzer, Polly Pocket and The Deep.

Universal Kids is not known by a lot of consumers internationally same with Sprout but for several years now the international feed has been known as DreamWorks Channel within the brand there's a preschool block known as DreamWorks Junior.

Unlike Sprout, DreamWorks Jr. doesn't offer much educational content as it follows the likes of Disney Junior and Nick Jr. that gear toward character driven shows or anything remotely similar but tone down to main brands Disney Channel and Nickelodeon.

No matter what opinion Sprout fans have over DreamWorks Junior, these type of content get viewers glued not that the offering on Sprout was bad but the world evolves and you still find alternatives like CBeebies and PBS Kids that do have a following.

Some of the content seen on this new version of Sprout includes Noddy: Toyland Detective, VeggieTales In The House, Doug Unplugs, Go Dog Go, Madagascar: A Little Wild and Dragons: Rescue Riders and you even get nostalgic content like Little Charley Bear and Olivia.

Although Universal Kids was said to have destroyed Sprout. DreamWorks Junior actually saved the brand from complete annihilation. I know the content ain't branded as Sprout but think about for a second.

Not a lot of households had access to Sprout and same outcome had fallen onto Universal Kids. If NBCUniversal had kept Sprout would it have survived the linear business especially now that more consumers are binging their favourite shows through their cellular gadgets.

It was a big limo, so we couldn't tell exactly what was going on outside, but we merged on to a highway and then we braked. This resulted in Vince McMahon angrily entertaining the ring but tear both his quads while entering. It left him to set awkwardly in the ring and tell WWE officials what to do. Rollins would go for a Sunset Power Flip Buckle and would tear his ACL and MCL and it couldn't be avoided and it was no fault of either man at the match of course the injury would put him out of action for 6 months forcing him to relinquish his championship.

This would be a huge blow for WWE as Seth Rollins became the top heel of the company and his injury altered their plans.

After The Bell podcast showcases real life stories WWE talents have kept private. It was the place where Vic Joseph had to brief everyone in on the incident before his time on WWE.

I've never talked about this publicly, I went from the back seat to the front seat, and had to go to speech therapy to learn how to talk. There is a scar under my face that no one sees. My knee from top to bottom was completely out. I was on the side of the road with a white sheet over me. That's how bad it was, I'm being dead serious. I moved and they screamed 'he's alive'. They put me on a gurney, cut my shirt off and I made a joke. I woke up with a neck brace on. I have a scar on my face and there's still a piece of glass in there.

He even discussed how he had to learn and do speech therapy again and meet several WWE stars.

I had to go to speech therapy and learn how to talk, I went to an independent show and I met Rhyno. He and I closer than most people care to know. He is family to me. He said "start jumping in the car with me on my off weekend". Every weekend, I was in the car with him. He let me pick his brain in for hours in the car. He introduced me to Person A and B. I ended up meeting Tommy Dreamer. He had a promotion he was running. The day his promotion was going. He asked me if I wanted to call the show. This  is what stated me on the road to WWE.

WWE Legend Triple H hasn't been lucky when it comes to injuries. He's torn his quad twice during his career and both occasions were freak accidents.

In 2001, as he enters Raw to to stop the welds of Chris Jericho and this resulted him struggling to put weight on one side of the leg another incident happened in 2007 when Triple H would perform a spin buster on Randy Orton.

Randy Orton hit headlines in 2008 after it was announced that he was involved in a motorcycle accident that could have ended in tragedy. MultiChoice: "Why Premium Customers Might Lose Out On A Certain New Channel?"

Earlier in the month, Insidus was able to confirm the addition of BBC UKTV to the DStv platform. eMedia Investments alongside BBC Studios were scheduled to launch the channel last month but just like MultiChoice we're all awaiting a release date.

BBC UKTV is regarded as a free-to-air channel offering reality shows, drama series, wildlife and kids shows or in other terms leveraging content from existing brands such as CBeebies, BBC Brit, BBC Earth and BBC Lifestyle from DStv and BBC Kids on MTN.

Some of the programming announced for the channel include Live At The Apollo and Top Gear from BBC Brit, Yakka Dee and Andy's Wild Adventures from CBeebies and My World Kitchen and The Great British Bake Off from BBC Lifestyle.

Later this month, MultiChoice launched two channels Magic Showcase and CineMagic and some viewers may not have noticed these channels as the pay-tv brand had been trying to keep it on the down low by making them accessible to only their Easyview customers.

But if you take your TV remote and press the option button and turn My DStv Channels into All DStv Channels you'd see the load of repeats so who could blame them for the lack of publicity.

As it is, BBC UKTV is seen in the same manner by media outlets as all the mentioned shows have a dedicated channel on the Premium package. All but BBC Kids which is confined to a mobile network and I doubt they'd give them that channel solely for that reason.

As much as it would make sense to phase out BBC Brit with this channel, BBC UKTV has a lot of catching up to do. If I had to turn to availability here are the benefits of the channel:

Compact and Compact+ - BBC Earth
Family - BBC Brit and BBC Earth
Access - BBC Brit, BBC Earth, BBC Lifestyle
Easyview - Everything

MultiChoice: "Why A Channel Like Mzansi Wethu Is Available On Premium But A Channel Like kykNET Lekker Isn't?"

MultiChoice is home to over 100 premium channels including M-Net, Universal TV, BBC Earth, National Geographic, CNN and Sky News. As it is, the pay-tv company isn't only known for their premium services but their load of repeats.

Everyday you get to rewatch the entire seasons of Two And A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory on Comedy Central and the same can be said about CBS Reality with Judge Judy, Hardcore Pawn and Cheaters.

You even find MultiChoice offering a duplicate Mzansi Magic to consumers who have Mzansi Magic kind of like how they advertise DStv to those already using their products. Interesting to note, not all these duplicates can be viewed on a package like Premium.

Basically, we have Me, Discovery Family, Real Time, Mzansi Wethu and Nicktoons available on a package like Premium while as kykNET Lekker, Moja 9.9., Magic Showcase and CineMagic aren't.

On the basis of Discovery Family, the reason was to give other customers e.g. Compact and Family access to the content viewed on Discovery Channel and later on Animal Planet and the same can be referenced for the above-mentioned brands.

If I had look at why Mzansi Wethu is on Premium, it's for this reason in particular remember how kykNET & Kie was just seen as kykNET Lekker for kykNET well there's telenovelas on there meaning even Premium clients don't have to rely on kykNET for the freshest shows.

Mzansi Wethu has got plenty of content you won't find on Mzansi Magic and M-Net is just telling viewers on the Premium package that Mzansi Wethu can benefit them as much as it already has with Access customers.
