Rumour: StuGO Cancelled On Disney Channel After One Season

StuGo is an American animated television series created by Ryan Gillis. The series revolves around a group of gifted middle schoolers who find themselves in a mysterious island in the Caribbean inhabited by the mad scientist Dr. Lullah, who brought them there under the guise of spending time at an academic summer camp. It serves as a co-production between Disney Television Animation and Titmouse, Inc., StuGo which premiered on Disney Channel on January 11, 2025.

It features the voices of:

• Tania Gunadi as Pliny, an Indonesian-American fun-loving, creative, resourceful, passionate, idealistic, and inventive girl. 

• Zosia Mamet as Merian, a high-strung, cautious, and anxious, yet intelligent perfectionist who is the daughter of two marine biologists. 

• Gabourey Sidibe as Francis, an African-American stoic, calm, and collected oddball with a deep voice. Svetlana, a mutant opossum. 

• Lo Mutuc as Larry, a Taiwanese-American enthusiastic, reckless, quirky, and upbeat boy who is fond of bugs and adventure.

• Zach Reino as Chip Manhands, a nerdy boy who is light in brawn but hefty in brain and proclaims to be masculine and overly confident. 

• Deborah Baker Jr. as: Sara, a chubby, nerdy, and headstrong girl who isn't afraid to use force. She is intensely competitive and a bit of a wildcard.

A few months ago, rumours had been swirling around about the possible cancellation of StuGO on Disney Channel. This would have followed an onslaught of series to have been booted by the network including Hamster And Gretel, Primos and Hailey's On It.

Since then fans had been using social platforms to air their grievances this attracted attention to StuGO's showrunner Ryan Gillis who issued out an official statement at the time:

 "I've been seeing #SaveStuGo floating around! Thank you very much for caring about the show! We haven't been cancelled yet- all eyes are gonna be on StuGo's Disney+ performance. So (please) tune in on July 30th! 😅 We'll have more content soon, leading up to the drop!" 

Recently, Titmouse who served as the production house for StuGO alongside Disney Television Animation had removed the series from their lineup. Fueling further speculation that StuGO will not be returning for a second season.

Competition Commission Approves eMedia Holdings Proposed Attempt To Acquire Remaining Shares In e.tv And Openview Parent Company

The Competition Commission has recommended that the Competition Tribunal unconditionally approve a proposed transaction that will see eMedia Holdings acquire eMedia Investments.

This will give eMedia Holdings (EMH) independent and complete control over eMedia Investments’ long-term strategic direction, and improve the liquidity of EMH’s shares.

eMedia Investments (EMI) controls the following firms: E-tv, Platco Digital, E-sat TV, Yired, SASANI Studios, and eMedia Properties. Platco Digital operates eMedia’s satellite service Openview.

EMH is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and is ultimately solely controlled by Hosken Consolidated Investments (HCI).

The Commission noted that EMH and HCI have investments in various firms active in several industries, including hotel and leisure, media and broadcasting, transport, energy, services and technology, and property.

Meanwhile, eMedia Investments is jointly controlled by EMH and VenFin, a holding company formed in 2000 as part of the Rembrandt Group’s restructuring.

During the restructuring, technology investments were held by Venfin, while traditional investments remained with Remgro.

Remgro is a South African, JSE-listed investment holding company with interests in the healthcare, consumer products, insurance, industrial, infrastructure, media, and sports sectors.

“The Commission is of the view that the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market as it is an internal restructuring,” the Competition Commission said.

“The proposed transaction does not raise significant public interest concerns.”

In a circular explaining the deal, eMedia said that EMH holds the majority of the shares (approximately 67.69%) in EMI, its operating subsidiary, while Venfin holds the remainder.

Under the terms of the deal, Venfin will receive shares in EMH in exchange for its EMI shares, which it must then immediately distribute to Remgro shareholders.

If Venfin or Remgro fails to distribute the shares, EMH has the right to repurchase the shares from either party for an aggregate cash consideration of up to R59,509,547.50.

“The proposed transaction will materially enhance EMH’s scale by consolidating 100% ownership of EMI under the listed entity, and ensure that EMH has independent and full control over EMI’s long-term strategic direction,” it said.

“In addition, for an extended period of time, there has been limited liquidity in the listed EMH N Shares.”

eMedia said that the transaction would create a significantly larger percentage of the EMH N shares held by public shareholders, creating additional free float and liquidity.

Zee Zonke Set To Premiere The Marathi Drama, Paaru

Zee Zonke had recently announced the addition of an upcoming series known as NginguPaaru (Paaru) with the channel gearing up to rollout another series, Ikhaya Lezimanga. It is currently ranked as the #1 Zulu dubbed channel which led to the inclusion of Star Khanya on DStv.

Synopsis for NginguPaaru 

The story follows Parvati “Paaru” Semse, a simple and humble girl who deeply admires a powerful and respected businesswoman, Ahilyadevi Kirloskar. Their worlds collide due to a misunderstanding, and Paaru then embarks on a heartfelt journey to win him over.

It starred Sharayu Sonawane as Paaru, Prasad Jawade as Aditya Shrikant Kirloskar and Mugdha Karnik as Ahilyadevi Shrikant Kirloskar. It was produced by Sarita Neswankar, directed by Raju Sawant, under the banner of Trrump Carrd Production.

Since it's inception, Paaru has also achieved considerable acclaim, earning multiple awards at the Zee Marathi Utsav Natyancha Awards 2024.

Play Room Acquired Broadcasting Rights To The Thundermans From Nickelodeon

Play Room, a South African based children's channel offering a mixture of animated and live-action content will add Nickelodeon's The Thundermans from 1st September at 15:30. This will be the channel's third live-action series from Nickelodeon following Henry Danger and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky And Dawn.

Synopsis for The Thundermans 

The series revolves around the Thundermans, a family with superpowers who try to live normal lives in the fictional city of Hiddenville. Phoebe dreams of being a superhero and using her powers for good, while her twin brother Max wants to be the next big supervillain and use his powers for evil. Parents Hank and Barb attempt to live normal lives and not use their superpowers – albeit not very successfully – while Nora and Billy enjoy using theirs whenever possible. A former supervillain named Dr. Colosso has been transmogrified into a rabbit and lives in Max's lair in the basement, offering him advice on becoming a villain.
