SEGA To Acquire Angry Birds Company Rovio

Sega, the Japanese-headquartered video game company best known in the West for its Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, is acquiring Angry Birds developer Rovio, the companies announced today. The Finnish headquartered mobile games developer will be acquired for €706 million (around $775 million), which The Wall Street Journal notes represents a roughly a 19 percent premium over its share price at close on Friday. The deal is expected to close by the end of September.

In a press release, Sega said it hopes to use “Rovio’s distinctive know-how in live service mobile game operation, to bring Sega’s current and new titles to the global mobile gaming market.” It sounds like a similar aim to what Sega’s rival Nintendo has been doing with its franchises, with smartphone releases like Mario Kart Tour, Pokémon Go, and Super Mario Run. Sega also wants to help Rovio “expand its platform outside of mobile gaming.”

“Among the rapidly growing global gaming market, the mobile gaming market has especially high potential, and it has been Sega’s long-term goal to accelerate its expansion in this field,” said Haruki Satomi, president and group CEO of Sega parent company Sega Sammy holdings. In a statement, Rovio CEO Alexandre Pelletier-Normand specifically called out the company’s Beacon platform, which is designed to help develop games-as-a-service products.

Rovio is best known for its work on the Angry Birds franchise, which launched in 2009 and is claimed to be the first mobile game series to have reached 1 billion downloads. In total, Rovio says its games have been downloaded over 5 billion times. Angry Birds has since been adapted for the big screen twice (once in 2016 and again in 2019), but more recent entries in the franchise have struggled to make a similar impact.

Sega isn’t the first company to have expressed an interest in acquiring Rovio. The mobile game developer had previously been in discussions to be acquired by Israel-based Playtika, but talks officially came to an end in March 2022. Rovio has been a publicly traded company since 2017.

Rovio’s acquisition by Sega is the latest example of an independent mobile gaming titan being hoovered up by a more traditional games giant. Candy Crush developer King was acquired by Activision Blizzard in a $5.9 billion deal that completed in 2016 while Zynga, the company behind FarmVille, was bought by Take-Two for $12.7 billion last year.

New Series Alert: Rajjo Coming Soon To Star Life

Star Life, a general entertainment channel owned by Disney Star offering movies, drama series and reality shows from across India is said to be rolling out a new series in place of one of the channel's oldest series Laxmi in the coming weeks titled Rajjo.

Based on the Bengali series Aalta Phoring, Rajjo follows an aspiring athlete from a village and a businessman who meet each other amid a calamity and gradually fall for each other. However, they have to deal with societal boundaries to be together.

Celesti Bairagey stars as Rajjo Thakur, Rajveer Singh stars as Arjun Singh Thakur, Gungun Uprari stars as Manorama "Manno" Dhaki, Pakkhi Hegde stars as Madhumalti Pratap Thakur and Surjit Saha stars as Bunty Chaudhary.

The show was initially promoted with the title Udti Ka Naam Rajjo, before it was modified to Rajjo. It debuted on StarPlus on 22 August 2022 and concluded on 5 March 2023 with a total of 190 episodes each with a 21 minute duration.

Rajjo will soon be one of the few shows on the channel to get a 1 hour allocation (45 minutes) as other shows such as Anupama, Lost In Love and Close To My Heart are currently occupying 30 minutes with rumours of more timeslots getting halved.

Rajjo airs weekdays at 6pm CAT on Star Life replacing Laxmi from 4 May

Development Alert: Two Shows Both Titled Annekan Die Swa Kry Has Been Silently Added To eVOD Ahead Of Premiere On eExtra

Aşk Mantık İntikam follows a couple who gets divorced after several years of marriage. But things change when the man suddenly gets rich, with his ex-wife working with him. It stars Burcu Özberk, İlhan Şen and Zeynep Kankonde.

Based on the Korean drama Cunning Single Lady, it stars Burcu Özberk, İlhan Şen, Zeynep Kankonde, Günay Karacaoğlu, Süleyman Atanısev, Mehmet Korhan Fırat, Ceren Koç, Emir Güler, Sevda Baş, Mehmet Yilmaz, Burak Yörük and Melisa Döngel.

During the month, there's been a bit of mixup with sources implicating Roekeloos Dade formerly slated on eExtra will now air on e.tv after Daai Crazy Somer while Om Elke Draai rolls out on the channel in it's place after #DisComplicated.

After awaiting confirmation of the identity of Annekan Die Swa Kry, to no one's surprise you'd think the romcom Aşk Mantık İntikam was the mysterious addition that failed to launch on eExtra but quite the contrary apparently eMedia's team mistook it for Kardeşlerim.

The story revolves around four siblings who lose their parents due to unfortunate circumstances and try to build their lives together. But soon the truth surrounding their parent's death slowly starts to unravel and nothing will remain the same.

It stars Fadik Sevin Atasoy, Celil Nalçakan, Su Burcu Yazgı Coşkun, Yiğit Koçak, Aylin Akpınar, Onur Seyit Yaran, Melis Minkari, Recep Usta and Cihan Şimşek.

Annekan Die Swa Kry is also a seasonal program as seen with Chrysalis, Die Put, Elif and Doodsondes. eMedia Investments is currently airing the first season on eVOD while the whole of Turkey are awaiting on the third season later in the year on ATV.

As seen in recent weeks, no one at eMedia Investments bothered to even promote this show. My guess has to do with the fact the above-mentioned error made on their side. Consumers have one show available on display but are viewing something else.

My hunch is that Aşk Mantık İntikam will likely be retitled following this confusion while as Kardeşlerim will likely adapt onto the tag Annekan Die Swa Kry.
