Totally Spies! Live-Action Series In The Works At Amazon

A live-action TV series based on the cult classic French cartoon “Totally Spies!” is in development at Amazon with Will Ferrell as executive producer.

Described as a YA adaptation of the long-running Banijay Kids animated show of the same name, the new “Totally Spies!” will follow iconic best friends Clover, Alex and Sam as they navigate saving the world as international spies, while trying to survive the ups and downs of first year college life.

No writer or talent is currently attached to the potential “Totally Spies!” series, which is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Banijay Kids & Family, shepherded by Amazon’s head of Pan-English original series Rola Bauer.

Executive producing the project alongside Ferrell, under their Gloria Sanchez Productions banner, are Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor. Banijay Kids & Family CEO Benoît Di Sabatino is executive producer for the studio.

Created by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel, the original “Totally Spies!” has aired nearly 200 episodes since debuting in 2001 and spawned a prequel film, “Totally Spies! The Movie,” and a spinoff series, “The Amazing Spiez!” The show recently premiered its seventh season in France and will air in the U.S. on Cartoon Network later this year. “Totally Spies!” is currently streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.

“’Totally Spies!’ is a huge success for Banijay Kids & Family, having been translated in 60 languages and sold to more than 220 territories,” Di Sabatino said. “With a social media base of 3 million, the series continues to thrive in its animation form with the recently launched 7th season. Rola Bauer approached me for a live-action adaptation, and we were thrilled to partner with Amazon MGM Studios. With her, Ludovic Attal, and Punit Matoo’s support, we are honoured to join such a stronghold of female-focused producers in Gloria Sanchez Productions to produce for Prime Video.”

“Will, Alix and I are thrilled to be joining our partners at Amazon and Banijay to bring ‘Totally Spies!’ to life as a live-action show,” Gloria Sanchez president Elbaum said. “Gloria Sanchez was originally founded to tell stories about complicated characters and empower female voices and storytellers. As longtime fans of the animated show, we couldn’t think of a story more fitting to our ethos. The themes of girl-power, never sacrificing friendship, fun, or your true self to be successful resonated with us then, and feel ripe to revisit now.”

Sanlam To Buy 60% Of MultiChoice's Insurance Business

Sanlam will buy a 60% stake in MultiChoice's insurance business for R1.2bn in cash up front and a potential performance-based earn-out of up to R1.5bn, the groups said on Tuesday.

MultiChoice, Africa's biggest pay-TV company, said while its insurance business has demonstrated substantial growth in South Africa, its ambition to expand locally and in Africa “requires a step-up in resources, expertise and technology”.

“Sanlam's extensive presence and expertise in the African continent, coupled with its track record of success in insurance ventures with non-insurers, positions it strongly for a strategic venture with MultiChoice,” the companies said in a joint statement.

The potential cash earn-out payment is contingent upon the total gross written premium generated by the insurance business for the year ending December 31 2026, they added.

A pre-acquisition dividend of R59m will also be declared by MultiChoice's insurance business.

Shares in Sanlam were up nearly 5% up on Tuesday morning, while MultiChoice inched up 0.36%.

MultiChoice will retain a 40% interest in the insurance business and 40% in the broader commercial venture with Sanlam.

The deal gives Sanlam an opportunity to further expand its insurance and financial services business in Africa, the companies said. Opportunities outside South Africa will be facilitated through its SanlamAllianz business.

MultiChoice has a subscriber base of 21-million households in 50 African countries, while Sanlam operates in 31 countries, including eight of the top 10 largest African economies.

The Reboot Of "Ren and Stimpy" Makes Its Global Premiere In July On Comedy Central, Including Latin America, CIS, Africa And Romania

Ren and Stimpy are back. After almost four years since its announcement and several setbacks in its production, the long-awaited (and controversial) reboot of one of Nickelodeon's most iconic animated series from the 90s will finally premiere this July. This news comes shortly after the original series left the programming of Comedy Central's Latin American channel due to a change in operations. Let's briefly review the production chronology of this series.

In August 2020, Comedy Central, owned by Paramount Global and Nickelodeon's sister channel, announced the green light to produce a reboot of "Ren and Stimpy." From the beginning, it was confirmed that John Kricfalusi, original creator of the franchise, would not participate in the new series nor receive financial compensation due to accusations of workplace mistreatment and sexual abuse against two minor women at the time: Robyn Byrd and Katie Rice , who worked at Spümcø, Kricfalusi's animation studio, becoming involved in the production of the original series and Adult Party Cartoon, its canceled successor for a more mature audience. Following the announcement of the reboot, Robyn Byrd started a petition on Change.org to cancel it, although it was apparently unsuccessful and the petition was eventually withdrawn, despite considerable support. Later, it was discovered that Byrd was participating in the production of the reboot. Initially planned as a collaboration between MTV Entertainment Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studio, with animation handled by the latter, production moved to Awesome Inc. (which made other series such as "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" or "Squidbillies") in October 2021. A month earlier, it had been confirmed that Billy West would reprise his voice roles as Ren and Stimpy.

Throughout much of 2022, there was a dearth of news about the reboot, leading many to speculate that it might have been quietly canceled. However, in September 2022, Snipple Animation Studios ("New Looney Tunes", "Jellystone!") announced its involvement as an animation provider. In turn, Billy West explained that development was significantly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus denying cancellation rumors. And so we arrive at December 2023, the month in which Paramount Global suffered a series of security breaches, leaking fragments of what appears to be the first episode of the reboot. This includes the "Screentime / All About Log" segments. Later, last May, a complete episode, the sixth, was leaked, containing the "Aw Hell No! / Squatters" segments, with clapperboard included and full credits.

Thanks to these episodes, we can confirm that John Kricfalusi is not mentioned in the credits as the creator of the characters, unlike other productions where the creators continue to be credited after facing accusations, such as Chris Savino with "The Loud House" or Justin Roiland with "Rick and Morty." Plus, Vanessa Coffey, the woman behind the ingenious idea of Nicktoons in the early '90s, is back as an executive producer, which is a nice surprise. However, it is unfortunate that much of the series' original team, including Bob Camp (who was initially planned to participate but left the project due to creative differences), is not involved. This means that the reboot has primarily been developed by people with no prior experience with the franchise or the characters. We also do not know if, for the Latin dubbing, Ren and Stimpy will have some of the voices that have given them life over the years (including Alfonso Obregón or Igor Cruz as Ren and José Luis Orozco, Martín Soto or Jorge Ornelas for Stimpy), or if there will be recasting.

But returning to the main topic, Comedy Central Latin America will premiere in its programming the new iteration of "Ren y Stimpy" with the segments "Renhattan / Table for Human / Clear Toilet" this Friday, July 12, around 10:30 p.m. MEX | 22:50hrs BRA | 23:30hrs COL/PER | 00:30hrs CHI/VEN | 01:30 hrs ARG. This date also applies to most of Comedy Central's international signals managed by Paramount Networks EMEAA, including the CIS countries, South Africa (at 10:50 p.m.) and Romania (at 10:00 p.m.). Because the premiere has not yet been officially announced by Paramount Global, it is worth clarifying that the date is subject to last minute modifications. New episodes will continue every Friday, at 10:00 p.m. BRA/MEX | 23:00hrs COL/PER | 00:00hrs CHI/VEN | 01:00 hrs ARG. The titles for Friday, July 19 are "Screentime / All About Log / Milk Pulp", and for Friday the 26th "Bad Stimpy / The Mother of all Yaksmases / Yucky the Mudman" will air. Additionally, starting Friday the 19th, each episode aired the previous week will be repeated right after that night's premiere.

At the moment, there is no set date for its release in the rest of the world, including the United States, its country of origin. Curiously, prior to this long-awaited premiere (except in Romania), Comedy Central will also present on its screens "South Park: The End of Obesity", the most recent Paramount+ original special of the successful adult animation franchise. In the same way, the channel will undergo a new change in its programming for Latin America that will bring back local programs. More details soon. The official synopsis for the reboot reads: "You may have thought you caught them during a misremembered fever dream when you were home sick in first grade, but misfit jester Ren and innocent jester Stimpy are back in an animated series! brand new full of laughter, screams and disturbingly grotesque frames that you can't miss! With new and delicious nightmares to burn into your retinas! In this season, Ren and Stimpy take on human skin, meet a genie, get scurvy, They join a cult, discover the wonders of hair removal, shoot a movie, undergo plastic surgery in a mall, go to hell, discover the true meaning of laquetal, and MUCH MORE! With the return of fan-favorite characters, as well as new characters voiced by actors you probably like."

"Surprise Coincidence": Canal+ Group Had Also Acquired The Former Pay-TV Brand FilmNet From MultiChoice And Johann Rupert's Richemont

FilmNet was a premium pay-tv service that was broadcast in parts of Europe between the 80's and 00's. It was a joint venture between MultiChoice and Johann Rupert's Richemont through Nethold which served as European version of M-Net.

Before Nethold acquired FilmNet by 1996, the brand was owned by Swedish company Esselte Video and Dutch film producer Rob Houwer. NBCUniversal, Nielson Holdings and Paramount Global also served as shareholders under the trademark, ATN.

The fate of FilmNet

FilmNet struggled to make profit before it was acquired by Nethold who in turn sold their shares in the company to Canal+ Group by 1997. Nethold continued operations for the channels in Greece until they were sold to Nova (Formerly ForthNet) by 2008.

Although the brand no longer exists, FilmNet's remains has been scattered through numerous outlets. There's TV4 Group (Scandinavia), Play More (Belgium), Nova (Greece) and Canal+ Group (Poland and Netherlands).

FilmNet's former owner is in the process of being acquired by Canal+ Group

Not long ago, MultiChoice had granted the French company Canal+ Group rights to its remaining shares in the company. They are seeking to get approval from local legislation and also looking to merge their operations which extends to 30 million households in Africa.

They are also seeking a B-BBEE partner in compliance with local regulations in the market. Although not official, Africa's Rainbow Capital and CAF President owner Patrice Moshepe is reportedly in talks in join the French broadcaster in the takeover.

Could Hamster And Gretel Also Have Been Cancelled By Disney Channel?

Hamster & Gretel is an American animated superhero comedy television series created by Phineas and Ferb co-creator Dan Povenmire that premiered on Disney Channel on August 12, 2022. It featured the voices of Michael Cimino, Beck Bennett, Joey King and Matt Jones.

It followed the life of a 16-year-old boy named Kevin must work with his sister Gretel when she and her pet hamster are given superpowers by aliens and become a superhero duo dedicated to protecting their city.

The first premiered on August 12, 2022 on Disney Channel initially commissioned for 20 episodes got 10 additional episodes bringing it to 30. By June 2023, a second season was announced as part of an overall deal with Dan Povenmire and Disney Branded Television.

During the week, Disney attended Annecy International Animation Film Festival where a lineup of content was unveiled including The Doomies and Kindergarten: The Musical. It was also there where it was revealed the production of a fifth season to Big City Greens.

Disney also announced a third season to Kiff on their social platforms and quietly removed any mentions of the show. Similar to Hailey's On It, speculation is going around that both Kiff and Hamster And Gretel will end after their current seasons.

Both shows were renewed as part of an overall deal with Disney Branded Television and weren't part of Annecy like Big City Greens. With Dan Povenmire open to doing a crossover between Hamster And Gretel and Phineas And Ferb if a third season is considered.

According to insiders, the reason Disney Channel has been canceling shows or slowly renewals has to do with the effects of the actor's strikes. The fate of these shows is dependant on their ratings through Disney+ as more households abandon linear TV.

If Not DStv And Showmax, Could M-Net And SuperSport Rebrand Under The Canal+ Trademark?

Canal+ is a French based pay-tv provider operated by Vivendi that distribute various films, series and TV channels. It is also one of MultiChoice's biggest shareholders and as reported sometime ago are set to merge their operations within Africa

As some readers are aware, Canal+ has acquired numerous stock in the recent years in an attempt to expand their operations. They currently own French broadcaster Orange SA's film and TV studios alongside M7 Group that is based in Europe.

Most of these assets are being credited as "A Canal+ Company" if not rebranding to Canal+ as yet. Of course, there's questions as to whether a similar fate could be awaiting the DStv and GOtv parent company, MultiChoice.

During the month, Canal+ Group CEO was approached by journalists where he addressed several matters regarding MultiChoice. As reported, he's been given the greenlight to acquire the remaining shares and is currently drawing up a proposal to appease legislation.

"So, you don't discard assets. Unless you have to." What is true is that we're only facing companies [like Netflix, Apple, etc.] that have one brand. And it makes them stronger. But if you ask me today, what would you do? You know, I would definitely not change the brands. They are very strong brands.

As implied these endeavors don't have to happen right away as there was a matter in Austria where HD Austria had rebranded to Canal+ Austria. The fate of DStv and Showmax will probably be dependent on where they stand with audiences in the coming years.

But from the other portion of the statement, it is also possible that DStv will remain as DStv. Even if they were to subject it to a rebrand, it will probably be what Elon Musk did to Twitter (Now X) majority referring to it as DStv another being the rapid decline in viewers.

There wouldn't be much to salvage if your audience hadn't shown any signs of improvement. The only reason you'd hide under another identity would be cover up those losses as seen with MultiChoice in regards to their premium numbers.

Although DStv and Showmax wouldn't be subject to a rebrand one would need to turn their attention to what comes on these platforms. We don't envision them rebranding KykNET or Mzansi Magic but crediting various shows and films as StudioCanal.

If there's a brand I'd probably wonder about now it would be M-Net as their international endeavors had been reduced in recent years. They had closed 1Magic and Me earlier in the year as the latter had been merged with Showmax (which wind up with 1Max).

If this was M-Net's way of transitioning to Showmax this would be an appropriate time cause unlike SuperSport it's struggling to retain its consumers following increased competition from Netflix and Disney+.

It is true that only two things drive subscriptions, he added. Discounts and sports. When there's a specific game that everyone wants to watch, Canal+ sees a spike of thousands of subscribers.

"(But) not one movie will drive subscriptions. Still, people who like sports, they like cinema. The opposite is not true."

Movies are seen as a prerequisite for subscribers. "And the economics work because you kind of amortise one over the other," says Saada.

Canal+ Group had mentioned that discounts and sports drive subscription cause when one game comes broadcasts the subscription numbers spike but when a movie comes on not one drive in subscription. One of those reasons we should question M-Net's fate.

If anything, M-Net could become Canal+ Premiere with the group of local channels continued to be referred as M-Net. Or like SuperSport it remains on air and Canal+ looks to launch separate TV channels under the company name as seen in other markets.
