VIMN Africa In Partnership With MultiChoice Expands MTV Base To Launch MTV Music 24

Johannesburg, 26 February 2019: Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa), with its major distribution partner, MultiChoice, is taking its flagship local youth culture channel to a broader South African audience by launching MTV Base on DStv Access. MTV Base brings subscribers the best of locally produced content from Tuesday, 5 March this year. The Youth and Music entertainment channel airs home grown shows like Gqom Nation with Busisiwa and Ntando Duma, edutainment series MTV Shuga starring Thuso Mbedu and Mohale Motaung along with popular Newsish featuring local VJ talent from Tshego Koke, Farieda Metsileng to recent competition winner Ntandose Mosibi.

At the same time, VIMN Africa will expand its international entertainment offering to the continent with the introduction of MTV Music 24 on the DStv platform in addition to the MTV Africa and MTV Base channels. This new content offering for DStv viewers will air as a simulcast (SD) linear TV service with music videos 24/7/365. MTV Music 24 will feature the latest music videos from all genres, including pop, dance, rock and urban, featuring firm favorites and future hits. It replaces VH1 on the platform from Tueday, 5 March.

The expansion of MTV Base’s reach to DStv Access, the arrival of MTV Music 24 and the upgrade of some of our channels to HD are part of our commitment to provide dynamic channels that speak to diverse audiences.”

The move to HD forms an important part of VIMN Africa’s distribution strategy with MultiChoice with the network launching 4 channels across Southern Africa (SADC): BET, Comedy Central, MTV and MTV Base to high definition next month. Nickelodeon will be available in HD in South Africa at the same time. 

By simulcasting (SD/HD) these popular household content brands, MultiChoice ensures that DStv’s offerings are at the forefront of broadcast and content innovation across the continent.

MTV Music 24 launches on DStv Premium and DStv Compact Plus on DStv 323 from 00:00 on Tuesday, 5 March 2019.
On Tuesday, 5 March 2019 the following channels will also be available in SADC in HD viewing:
MTV Base on DStv Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Family and DStv Access, (DStv 322)
MTV (DStv 130)
Comedy Central (DStv 122)
BET Africa (DStv 129)
Nickelodeon (DStv 305) will be available in HD, in South Africa only from Tuesday, 5 March 2019.
