Development Hell: The Pending The Third Season To Star Life's The Evil Eye

The Evil Eye was the first and one of the few attempts Africa got to supernatural on Star Life alongside A Magical Love Story which came amidst a pandemic with the second season was also filmed in such a climate.

Since its abrupt end, some viewers can't stop boasting about the show that it got to a point where they advertised fake repeats and even listed Bengali adaptation Nojor (pictured above) as The Evil Eye season 3.

Ever since A Magical Love Story ended, there hasn't been a site of venomous snake or anything supernatural on Star Life even on Zee World as regional stations are the closest to viewing them dubbed while others are distributed in their original language with subtitles.

 

Amidst the phasing out of these shows sources state that Star Life picked up Bold And Beautiful and The Evil Doom which were scheduled for a late 2021 to mid 2022 release which never came to pass.

Joining that trio was the fake third season of The Evil Eye which is now considered a new season but supposedly on a new Indian entertainment channel that was set to replace Star Life.

This supposed channel was said to focus on Bengali which is similar to Hindi in an attempt to "differentiate" the offering from StarPlus but hey some of the content from Bengali are remakes to the Hindi content and vice versa.

 

The thing about this was Disney Star the owners of these brands already operated a Bengali channel Star Jalsha which is niche I mean every market has their niche. In South Africa, it is Tsonga, Sepedi and Siswati as Zulu, Afrikaans and Ndebele dominate the region.

The question would have to be why trade one group for another if the plan was to replace wouldn't it be better to source areas like Telegu, Tamil and Malayalam as they also reside in the Bollywood community under the Disney Star.

Zee TV had every chance to launch such a channel but instead opted for reruns channel, Zee One.

How The Walt Disney Company Ruined And Killed Off Star On Disney+?

Star is a content hub within the Disney+ streaming service that is responsible for handling series like American Dad, How I Met Your Mother, Helstorm, Scream Queens, Little Fireflies Everywhere alongside movies like Deadpool, Little Monsters and Vacation Friends.

Before that, the Star brand name was and is currently used in India for original programs and movies which come with linear channels that can be viewed in countries outside the region.

Due to criticism by several consumers regarding the lack of adult entertainment on the platform I mean several shows like Modern Family and Glee weren't present at the time despite fitting the description of Disney+ which was rated family at the time.

 

Star is a brand that catered to consumers aged 18-49 while some regions had to pay extra to view the bulk of entertainment on a seperate service (Hulu or Star+) others were able to view it under a tile on Disney+.

For several months into 2021, as Star began to rollout onto Disney+ in other countries came the attention span The Walt Disney Company had toward the brand. You'd find several adverts for the content under this brand labelled as Disney+ while others were labelled under another property.

From my observation, Star hardly had original content except for where it was deemed relevant which is India and even then most of the content would compliment other tiles on Disney+ and not go for the edgy stuff that would seem less Disney.

 

Worst part in regard to all of this is how some parts of Europe had to phase out the Star brand in favour of Utsav which is based on irrelevant channel only for India to go head with Star as the main company rebranded to Disney Star hopefully there's no mix-up when referring to streamer Disney+ Star.

Last year, it was reported that they'd be exiting the English market in India and likely global which appears to be on some limbo as the reported new channels had been delayed or scrapped but we'll see what happens when those delays eventually hit the surface.

The Walt Disney Company was always about alignment as several Disney channels were sacrificed for Disney+ and ESPN but these inconsistencies just prove that any brand can be mismanaged whether its fresh like Magnolia or old as TCM.

New Series Alert: My Desire Coming Soon To Star Life

Star Life was on a sunken ship for a couple of months and following the revamped lineup which saw repeats broadcast in the daytime and a boost in primetime. The viewership on the channel began to excel joining other comers like Zee World and Zee One.

In the month of June, the channel picks up rights to the romantic drama My Desire (Yeh Hai Chahatein) which serves a spinoff to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein known to SA viewers on Glow TV as This Is Love.

This spin-off is a passionate love story between a famous rockstar, Rudraksh Khurana and a gynaecologist, Dr. Preesha Srinivasan who fall in love after raising their siblings son together.

Interesting enough, the show was produced by Ekta Kapoor the same person who produced Zee TV's popular franchise Twist Of Fate (Kumkum Bhagya) alongside spinoffs This Is Fate (Kundali Bhagya) and Luck In My Fate (Bhagya Lakshmi) so you can tell what road this series will take.

 

 

Before news of My Desire surfaced there was even rumours that the main series This Is Love which again is still airing on Glow TV would find its way on Star Life. Of course, there's been a lot of restructuring with the brand so there's no telling whether that's still on the cards.

 

But what I can tell you about this new series My Desire, it began in 2019 and till this very date hasn't ended again Ekta Kapoor. I feel her shows weren't meant to have an end or are those shows that were meant to be timeless like Bold And The Beautiful from CBS or 7de Laan from the SABC.

So if you're interested in short dramas then My Desire is not for you but if you've watched Saloni, East Meets West and the popular Twist Of Fate then you'll manage this new series.

The show is scheduled for June 9th at 8pm.

Development Hell: Countdown To The List Of Bollywood Channels Coming Soon

Just going a through a list of concepts which was discussed, rumoured, delayed or potentially scrapped. Some of Bollywood channels currently seen on DStv and Openview were derived from several other concepts.

But I'm not here to discuss that but share a list of other channels and it goes as follows:

 

1. eBella/eBolly
The defunct channel was said to make a comeback as a replacement to one of the current Indian channels on Openview. The channel was said to offer Bollywood films something you hardly get on eMovies and other entertainment.

2. &TV
&TV is a Hindi language entertainment channel operated by Zee Entertainment Enterprises home to shows viewers would have come across on Zee TV such as Begusarai, The Heir and on eVOD Dayan, Destructive Beauty. The reasons for its absence has to do with Zee TV as they licence content from the brand and with both being operated by the same company the two are in sink.

The only known regions to provide it a standalone is the US and Asia.

 

3. Star Maa
Star Maa is a Telegu entertainment channel operated by Star India which broadcasts dramas, reality shows and movies. The channel was said to launch on DStv Indian.

4. Untitled Zee World repeats channel 1
Around the time Zee Bollynova launched on the defunct Kwesé TV and before Zee One existed. Rumour had it that MultiChoice was looking to add a reruns channel for their #1 Bollywood entertainment channel which could have been scrapped for Zee Alem.

5. Star Gold
Star Gold is the brand name Star India gives to their movie channels. This was part of list of possible movie channels on DStv but the channel be viewed on StarSat.

6. Untitled Zee World repeats channel 2
Close to the launch of Zee Alem in Ethiopia, Zee Entertainment Enterprises revealed in an interview that they were open to launching some regional channels. The second repeats channel was said to cater for Zulu, Swahili and Hausa viewers.

 

7. Life OK/Utsav
Disney+ is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the coming month and Star branding has been replaced with Utsav in most parts of Europe where the African feed operates. The question boiled down to the potential brand name for Star Life and its programming.

8. Zee Naija
Unlike most other Zee channels, this brand wouldn't cater entirely to repeats as there was a bunch of local content being planned such as Dance Nigeria Dance, Deceptive Measures and The Passion For Love.

 

9. Untitled Star Life movie channel
Unlike Star Gold, the movie channel would have been dubbed in English and would give the main channel sometime to source out other programming.

10. Bollytunes & Zee Music
Remember that TV show that had no purpose to Zee World as the program aired between shows well it was said to have its own channel one for English audiences another for Indian subscribers on DStv.

11. Untitled eMovies channel
eMedia Investments was rumoured to launch a Bollywood pop-up channel for movies before the pandemic hit and there's been no updates in that regard except that the possibility of a third movie channel.

 

12. Zindagi
Zindagi was the name of a brand Zee Entertainment Enterprises gave to their regional offering. What this channel did was air regional content kind of like the African adaptation of Mehek but it could have been scrapped as the brand is not active.

13. Zee Zest
Zee Zest is a Hindi entertainment channel operated by Zee Entertainment Enterprises and compared to all other channels on the list this one airs lifestyle and reality shows. It was said to launch on DStv Indian when it was known as Living Foodz.

 

14. Zee World and Zee One's replacements
The parent company of the channels are minority owners of the brands and rumour had it that the brands would include more content from Sony Pictures India as well as adapt to Sony branding.

15. Zee News (likely scrapped)
Zee News is a Hindi news channel operated by Essel Group that is also in charge of another news station on DStv, WION.

16. Zee Oldies
A channel for older dramas in the 90s to early 00s

New Series Alert: Family Secrets Makes Their Free-To-Air Debut On SABC 3

Earlier in the year, it was reported that SABC 2 will rebroadcast Zee TV's Saloni and East Meets West in the coming future after a decade of no Bollywood. It seems like SABC 3 will be joining the Bollywood spectacle.

Apparently, the public broadcaster picked up rights to the 2017 drama Rishton Ka Chakravyuh (Labrinth Of Relationships) which is also known on Star Life as Family Secrets.

 

Based on the story of Lai Bhaari, Family Secrets revolves around a mother, authoritative royal businesswoman Satrupa, and her 17-year-old free-spirited, confident daughter Anami. The show depicts the life of a royal, industrialist family that resides in Laal Mahal, the house of conspiracies.

The show stars Narayani Shastri, Sangita Ghosh, Mahima Makwana, Ankit Siwach and Ajay Chaudhary.

 

Family Secrets is scheduled to air every weekday at 19:00 on SABC 3 from Monday 18 April. In other developments, Zee One is scheduled to air the African adaptation of the Indian drama, Mehek.

Dark Side Of The Ring is a documentary series by Viceland which focuses on controversial subjects and events within the realm of professional wrestling. Some of the notable topics covered include Chris Benoit, Bruiser Body and Gino Hernandez.

eMedia Investments picked up the show for their new channel Xposed alongside other Viceland productions including States of Undress, F**K That’s Delicious and Most Expensivest by 2 Chainz.

The series commences at 18:50 from Monday 4 April.

 

Taffy renewed for a third season on Boomerang

Cyber Group Studios and French kids broadcaster Gulli have announced the return of Taffy which has been renewed for a third season. Production is set to begin later in the year.

Season three of kids comedy Taffy will continue the capers of Bentley the dog, who is determined to show his owner that the cat she just took in is actually a raccoon. The format of the third season has not been finalized yet.

 

21 Again launches on SABC 3 this month

Five daughters send their mothers undercover as 21-year-olds. From dating to working to activism, the mums will be immersed in their world. Can the mums pull off being 21 Again?

Season 1 airs Tuesday, 5 April at 22:00.

 

Star Life to introduce Lost In Love

Last month, Star Life announced they will undergo some lineup changes by moving repeats to the afternoon slot and movies to weekends as they try to boost their primetime offering and launch the new series A New Life.

According to sources, the channel is said to air a Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Mein (Lost In Love) which is a remake of Bengali series Kusum Dola from Star Jalsha.

Virat, a young police officer, marries to honour the promise he made to his dying father. But when his former lover re-enters his life, he finds his heart pulled in both directions.

Four Upcoming Developments For Star Life

In the month of April, Star Life an Indian based entertainment channel offering content in English to viewers in Africa will undergo some schedule changes amidst the time other brands such as e.tv and Boomerang all have plans to revamp their lineup.

On e.tv's and Boomerang's side, these changes are drastic compared to Star Life I mean both channels had this offering beforehand now that consumers will be seeing more of that time will tell whether the endeavours will benefit them in the long run.

Star Life despite not having much adjustments has been put in the craft of this shake up I'm not one to believe in superstitions but could this changes awaiting viewers be a good thing for viewers or could there be more to the story.

From April 4th, the channel adds two more repeats to the afternoon schedule Forbidden Love and Kulfi: The Singing Star while Geet airs an hour early meaning Bollywood films are no more or at least not on weekdays.

 

On primetime, the lineup receives a major boost as A New Life launches on the channel joining other current shows such as Never Say Goodbye, Dream Girl, Lockdown: A Love Story and Happy Hearts.

On the upcoming slate, Anupamaa probably launching as The Homemaker is expected to air on the channel really soon alongside other series such as Unforseen Love, Bold and Beautiful and Destined Love.

Never Say Goodbye Reportedly Getting A New Timeslot On Star Life While The Channel Reduce Primetime To Just 6 Days, Introduces Star Special And Reality Shows In April

According to sources, Star Life will undergo some lineup following e.tv which scrapped several international series for more local productions.  Unlike e.tv, viewers aren't losing anything on Star Life and you'll hardly notice the changes.

Geet will go off air in the coming month as Never Say Goodbye occupies the space once used for the repeat. All other shows such as A Lockdown Love Story, Dream Girl and Happy Hearts even the films retain their timeslots.

The only downside is that the channel will no longer offer new episodes to these series on Sundays as Bollywood films and two rumoured attractions Star Special and the reality slot are the primetime attractions.

Reality slot doesn't need much brief as it is in the name. Star Special is said to be a slot which recaps on past series such as Mismatched, Forbidden Love, Eternal Love, Made For Each Other, Chasing My Heart and An Usual Tale.

 

Basically Geet was replaced with Star Special, the only complication is while other shows air 6 days SS airs weekly not to mention its like watching WWE Raw highlights where consumers only get a fragment of the actual show.

These changes are said to occur from April 11th same time as e.tv's schedule adjustment. Only time will tell whether these changes will make or break the channel.

If I had to be honest, these changes will actually give viewers time to explore other outlets and the arrangement of this schedule is not bad. Most Indian channels don't offer this much variety and for Star Life to give reality some airtime is a big improvement on their part.

Why This Is Love And Saras Will Likely Stop Airing On Glow TV?

As some viewers have already noticed, Glow TV has been working around the clock to save their viewership as more people opt to brands like Zee One and Star Life as there's not a lot of repeats on that station and viewers get a larger selection of drama series.

Glow TV launched amidst the time eMedia Investments launched their own STBs called Openview HD (now Openview) leveraging content from several popular brands in India including Sony, Colors TV and StarPlus while as ramping up some local productions.

Over the years, the channel has experienced some cracks in terms of management where Urban Brew Studios sold a large portion of their stake to Nismedia and programming where brands like StarPlus got a dedicated channel for the English market while Sony strengthened their bond with the enemy Zee TV.

Three years after Star Life launched, a fragment of StarPlus content primarily This Is Love can still be seen on Glow TV while series like Forbidden Passion (known to Glow TV viewers as Unforseen Love) has since then never reverted back to Glow TV as it aired on Star Life.

Implying that Glow TV's distribution contract with StarPlus is still active and could be scrapped when their agreement comes to an end meaning series like Saras and This Is Love will no longer be available for viewing by the channel.

Unlike eExtra, Glow TV doesn't play favourites with their competitors as seen with their drama series where a large chunk of the content is distributed by Colors TV with This Is Love present for StarPlus.

Star Life is rumoured to air Soulmates (known to Glow TV viewers as Saras) later in the year which was met with positive reception while criticism awaited for This Is Love which the details regarding its launch period remains undisclosed.

REPEATS!!! As Telemundo Africa Welcomes Back My Heart Beats For Lola And This Is Love Possibly Resurfaces On Star Life

During this past week, it was reported that My Heart Beats For Lola is set to replace Labour Of Love and Decisions on Telemundo while Star Life might broadcast one of their owners Star India's original productions This Is Love currently seen on Glow TV. Since then viewers expressed their disappointment with the relevant stations over these developments.

Firstly, My Heart Beats For Lola and This Is Love despite being popular amongst Africans have also been abused by the relevant parties in the number of times it flies in and out of their lineup which doesn't surprise most audiences as both brands leverage a lot of reruns in their daytime schedule.

Both brands have been working aggressively to keep viewers entertained as their primetime offering experienced a reduction in new content. For Telemundo, the reason relied heavily on super series as it costs a lot to produce content in that quality while Glow TV underwent management changes.

Glow TV was once owned by Urban Brew Studios before Nismedia took majority share of the channel. Glow TV was on the verge of closing down to its entirety across South Africa on DStv, Openview and StarSat.

All channels have repeats look at e.tv with Mr. Bones and Comedy Central with Friends, so what's wrong with seeing that on channels like Telemundo and Glow TV?

Majority of the population aren't home at times, these series are viewed and some that are available are living with family or other people who occupy the couch at times these shows manage to air on the stations.

There also the fact that there's several others who have to multitask as they have other content to watch at the times these series come on so in a way the repeats give viewers some time to watch content they've missed elsewhere.

Glow TV was removed from DStv a years back so while others explored the alternatives available to them such as Openview, StarSat and DStv Indian. There's still people that latched onto the pay-tv platform so This Is Love would benefit them.

MultiChoice gets new DStv and GOtv customers everyday and some of those consumers could have started tuning into the channel.

Viewership Stats For 10-17 February: A Week Of Major Declines For The Indian Channels But On The Bright Side Zee World Is Once Again The Most Viewed Indian Channel In South Africa

Star Life and Zee One both had season finales which brought the best numbers for the programming. In that, Zee One seems to have fallen to the cracks as its main counterpart Zee World gains the figures to once again become the most watched Indian channel in South Africa but experiences a decline as seen in previous weeks.

- Reruns pulled 3,5 million during the week making them the most viewed Indian channel in repeats.
- These Streets experiences a major decline in viewership from 1,4 million in the previous week to 0,6 million in this week with a difference of 0,8 million.
- Twist Of Fate reached a new milestone 3 million viewers.
- Once There Was A King gained 0.4 million viewers within this week.
- The channel lost 0.3 million viewers in the previous week.

- Star Life became the second most watched Indian channel for one day as Zee One fell to third place.

Zee World and Zee One are managed by the same people so it only seemed logical for something like this to happen. The only thing that kind of ties Star Life with Glow TV is the paint used for the channel's logos and poor offering.

January's Viewership Stats For Glow TV Raises Even More Suspicion Regarding Its Sudden Termination From The Openview Platform + Zee World And Star Life's Stats Are Included Inside

Viewership stats for the weeks of 20 - 26 January are out for Zee World, Star Life and Glow TV. Through these stats, you can clearly see Zee World pulls in the most punches outside of reruns compared to the other two despite being accessible on Openview.

- The Insolent Heart was the least watched show of course it wouldn't be a big deal but imagine a repeat such as Geet having more views than a new show.
- None of their programs are sitting in the 2 and to some extent 3 million tile yet Mismatched broke all the laws of physics with their 3.9 million (4 million) views.
- The only channel with less repeated programming.
