These Channels Were Speculated To Be On DStv But Didn't Materialize

Over the years, there's been reports of several channels making their way to the platform some of them was supposedly confirmed by them and likely scrapped it's still unknown till this day so here's a roundup of some channels.

EWTN, offers family-oriented, spiritually-enriching programming from a Catholic point of view. The Networks’ diverse programs include live talk shows, news programs, original series and documentaries, teaching series with noted theologians, children’s shows, live coverage of the Pope, a live daily Mass, and much more. According to a representative, the channel was too expensive to get in South Africa so they were exploring ways to get it on board but till then it hit a dead end.

BabyTV is a multilingual international television channel for babies, toddlers, and parents, owned by Fox Networks Group, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, ultimately owned by The Walt Disney Company. The channel was originally suppose to be available around the time TopTV launched and this was long before it became Starsat and since the only update regarding the channel was the proposed channel numbers which were 307, 309 and 312.

France 24 is a French state-owned international news television network based in Paris. Its channels broadcast in French, English, Arabic, and Spanish and are aimed at the overseas market, similar to BBC World News, DW and RT.

Syfy is an American basic cable channel that is owned by the NBCUniversal Television and Streaming division of NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. The channel features science fiction, fantasy, horror, supernatural, paranormal, drama, and reality programming. MultiChoice Africa was set to relaunch the channel but deemed it expensive while MultiChoice SA wasn't interested and deemed it niche.

eReality, yes this South African beauty was rumored to be a placeholder for the defunct eBella operated by eMedia Investments. MultiChoice even put the channel up in their test channel section. Who knows exactly why it was scrapped perhaps MultiChoice realised this channel has too much programs available on other channels on DStv.

OutTV is a Canadian English language specialty channel which broadcasts general entertainment and lifestyle programming aimed at the LGBT community. So far the brand has returned through Showmax but if you visit the media pages they never mentioned returning with local programs as well so maybe this deal they have with that platform is the start of something new.

South African Youth Choose Cartoon Network And Boomerang Again At 16th Annual Sunday Times Gen Next Awards

Boomerang and Cartoon Network are still firm favourites for South African youth! There is no clearer indication of that than the Sunday Times Gen Next Awards, where the two WarnerMedia channels once again dominated the television category.

With nominations across the categories: Coolest TV Channels (Cartoon Network), Coolest Entertainment Channel (Cartoon Network),  Coolest Kids TV Channels (Cartoon Network & Boomerang) and Coolest Cartoon Shows (Mr. Bean: The Animated Series, Teen Titans Go!, The Regular Show; Tom & Jerry) WarnerMedia’s kids’ multiplex have been leading the pay-TV category in South Africa since 2014 amongst kids viewers.*

Following the online awards announcement made on Friday, 21 August 2020, the channels came out tops with the subsequent awards: Coolest TV Channel where Cartoon Network beat leading brands in music and entertainment; Coolest Kids TV Channel (Cartoon Network) with Boomerang coming in 4th place; WarnerMedia’s kids’ multiplex  shows,  Mr. Bean, The Regular Show, Tom & Jerry, and Teen Titans were voted #1, #2, #3 and #5 respectively in the Coolest Cartoon Shows category; and Cartoon Network was took the #2 spot in the Coolest Entertainment Channel category.

Now in its 16th year, the Sunday Times Gen Next Survey is considered the leading barometer of what South Africa’s youth find on-trend and aspirational, delivering key insights valued by brand management, advertising and marketing professionals alike. With more than six thousand respondents, this year’s survey also included, for the first time ever, a sample population of Young Professionals aged 25-30 years.

Reaching more than 15 million viewers per month**, Cartoon Network is widely watched by kids, and young adults alike with Emmy Award-winning programming such as Ben 10 and Teen Titans Go! alongside popular shows like Dragon Ball Super and Power Rangers.
Boomerang, home to much-loved shows including Mr. Bean, Masha and the Bear, Zig and Sharko, and iconic frenemies Tom & Jerry, reaches more than 11 million viewers per month***.

What You Might Expect On DStv's New Addition To The School Of Laughter, Zoomoo?

MultiChoice had a virtual showcase on August 19th and at that period they unveiled 5 new channels for their viewers including KIX which was overhyped for a while now then there's Zoomoo which is known as a pop-up kiddies channel.

These new channels were just sneak peeks as MultiChoice hasn't officially announced them through their outlets and these might not be only channels coming to the platform for the rest of the year as Wild Earth is launching tomorrow and that wasn't unveiled in the showcase.

As most people noticed most of the new channels added to DStv have been labelled as pop-up channels before becoming permanent channels for some reason particularly in South Africa and Lesotho like Da Vinci and AfricaNews, WWE Channel, PBS Kids and ESPN (discreetly before being snubbed).
Zoomoo (DStv 314) is a Canadian kids' channel that delivers a unique mix of live-action combined with animation and puppets - it's the world's first fully-interactive pre-school channel dedicated entirely to animals and nature, aimed at kids aged 2-7 years old. The channel is accompanied by a free ZooMoo App, which completes the multi-screen environment, synchronized on a real-time basis with the channel. It launches as a pop-up channel on DStv, which will be available from 1 October 2020 to 31 March 2021 presumably for South Africa and Lesotho.

Zoomoo is owned by Blue Ant Media that also supply StarTimes with Love Nature and The Smithsonian Channel it wouldn't be shocking if StarTimes or OpenView supplied Zoomoo soon. This kids channel launched earlier in the year in some parts of Africa through Zuku TV.
Zoomoo carries original content alongside acquired series which can be found on their YouTube channel and some streaming platforms.

Here's a list of confirmed programs for the channel so far:
- TEDDIES, stars four teddy bear friends- Dom, Meeks, Sparky and Tizzy- who live
in the wonderful world of Teddytown! Like kids, they’re learning what it’s like to grow up; making friends, being kind to others, helping out, making mistakes and respecting and appreciating others. Aimed at the pre-school market, this entertaining and endearing series also assists children in their development of social and emotional skills.
- THE HIVE, is a colourful animated series for kids all ages introducing life to early learners with the Bee Family. This series is about the everyday things that concern small children such as playing, being friendly, spending time with your family, getting along, and finding out all about the world and how it works.
- LEO, THE WILDLIFE RANGER, Join Leo and friends as they go on exciting adventures around the world and explore exotic locations and learn fun facts about animals and nature!
- JELLY JAM, takes places on a colorful planet called Jammbo. The series follows the adventures of seven characters: Bello, Goomo, Rita, Mina, Ongo, King and Queen; who live on a planet named 'Jammbo'. The planet has a music factory where all music in the universe originates from, and this music is produced continuously through bubbles. If this factory stopped, the characters would turn grey and apathetic, lose their memories and then simply stop moving at all.
- KOOKI'S CRAFTY SHOW, is a live-action pre-school series that empowers young children to unleash the wild side of their creativity through the magic of crafting. Hosted by a semi-suited, cheeky and playful red panda named Kooki, the series will feature two different crafts per episode. Projects will include recyclable crafts, painting and origami, with one craft always incorporating an animal theme. Kooki’s actions will be guided by the voice of a child who will ask Kooki to make things, explaining the process along the way.
