New Series Alert: e.tv Welcomes First Local Telenovela Of The Year, Nikiwe

Last year, it was announced that e.tv would be bidding farewell to the medical drama Durban Gen after 2 seasons. Not long ago, it was reported that Imbewu and Isono would be following the drama in the second quarter of the year.

After months of anticipation as to what would await the future of these timeslots on the channel. eMedia Investments unveiled a brand new local drama Nikiwe which is set to replace Durban Gen from Monday 24 April in the same timeslot, 18:30.

The series follows the lives of the Radebe family, witnessing the rise and fall of a family empire based in the surrounds of Diepkloof Extension, Pimville and Orlando, Soweto.

It's executively produced by Thomas Gumede and Lungile Radu for Parental Advisory Productions, creators of game shows Uyang'thanda Na? and Perfect Match, and the Mzansi Magic drama series Abomama. Thomas Gumede also serves as director.

In a statement with e.tv Executive Producer Mark Madai:

“Exciting times are ahead of us, as a channel we fell in love with this story concept because it also follows the lives of the youth, we’ve explored all possible dilemmas that this market would go through and translated them to screen, giving viewers a product that they’ll resonate with, night in, night out."

Ahead of its debut, e.tv will debut a trailer for the show on Friday, 24 March at 10:00 click here

Destined By Fate: Woh To Hai Albelaa And Bohot Pyaar Karte Hai Are Also Rumoured To Be Rolling Out On Star Life

In the last few months, Star Life has been unsatisfying adjustments to their lineup. Instead of pumping the breaks on some of their shows they'd rather cut their airtime even worse take another show for a ride as seen with Closer To My Heart and Lost In Love.

This is only due to the fact that Lost In Love was starting to catch-up to their Indian counterpart so they rather retain the show instead of following what fellow competitors Zee World and Star Life would do by dividing the episodes between seasons.

Now sources have confirmed the presence of another new series, Destined By Fate. It is set to occupy the second half of Anupama's timeslot meaning just like Closer To My Heart and Lost In Love these shows will all be allocated in a 30 minute timeslot.

Compared to most other series, the channel hasn't provided much info about the show but from what our sources conducted it's likely the rumoured shows Woh To Hai Albelaa (He Is Very Unique) or Bohot Pyaar Karte Hai (Love You So Much).

Based on the Tamil series Eeramana Rojave, Woh To Hai Albelaa tells the story of former best friends Balwant Sharma and Dhanraj Choudhary who due to a fight between their children Krishna and Sayuri, their families become enemies.

It stars Shaheer Sheikh as Krishna "Kanha" Choudhary, Hiba Nawab as Sayuri "Sayu" Sharma Choudhary, Kinshuk Vaidya as Nakul Choudhary and Rachi Sharma/ Dharti Bhatt as Rashmi "Rashu" Sharma Choudhary.

Bohot Pyaar Karte Hai tells the story about a girl named Indu who lives with her younger sister and parents. Indu loves a guy named Mahesh and wants to go meet him and propose to him for marriage. She goes to meet him with her dad but finds that he has already married someone else.

It stars Karan Grover as Ritesh Malhotra, Sayali Salunkhe as Indu Raina Malhotra, Kiara Sadh as Zoon Raina Malhotra, Shireen Mirza as Kamna Pankaj Malhotra and Sanjay Swaraj as Pankaj Malhotra.

Destined By Fate will replace Anupama daily at 18:30 from 3 April.

RUMOUR: Warner Bros. Discovery Latin America Dives Into The World Of Soap Operas With TNT Novelas

Turner Network Television, Inc., a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery, registered a new trademark derived from TNT in Latin America, for the moment only in Argentina and Chile, as verified by INPI and INAPI, industrial property institutes for both countries, respectively.

The new trademark registered in recent days bears the name of "TNT Novelas", and it is unknown exactly what it is, although the company has already presented a logo.

One of the most logical theories indicates that TNT Novelas could become a successor or a relaunch of the current cable channel TNT Series, launched in 2015, which in recent years has incorporated multiple soap operas into its daily programming. The creation of a new channel is not ruled out either, although there is no basis to support this hypothesis.

There is no official information regarding TNT Novelas at the moment.

In other developments, Warner Bros. Discovery has been phasing out the TNT brand name across Europe in the general entertainment category. Not sure where that leaves the current TNT Africa but for now we assume the channel will remain intact in the market.

Warner Bros. Discovery kicked off its global centennial campaign in January, under the banner Celebrating Every Story, in advance of Warner Bros. Studios 100th Anniversary on April 4, 2023. Several of their channels have been joining the festivity with a lineup of content.

Recap To The Past Month: The Mysterious Disappearance Of The Spice Bouquet On The Openview Platform

Earlier in the month, eMedia Investments unveiled the first batch to the pay-tv venture Openview Ultra known as Ultraview Pride or just Pride. It is basically an LGBTQ type bouquet consisting of two general entertainment channels one of which DStv reject, OUTtv and FUSE.

During the launch consumers were kind of curious as to the fate of Spice TV which is basically an expansion to the current Bollywood offering seen on the Openview which like Pride TV comes with two channels for the time being, Zee Family and Star Select.

They were rumours sometime ago that just like BBC UKTV failed launch on Openview that eMedia Investments was having issues with one of the channels in question but that seems highly unlikely as eMedia Investments held a dance party this past week.

If I had to guess, eMedia Investments was planning to do some grand gesture for the offering ahead of its debut on the Openview platform. Similar to Pride which too a similar festivity months prior.

Although eMedia Investments has yet to provide any further details about a potential rollout. I wouldn't be shocked if they unveiled it in the coming weeks or before May in fact considering when these channels were unveiled to the public beforehand.

As for the channels in question, Zee Family is said to be a direct competitor to the current Zee TV both owned by Zee Entertainment Enterprises. I wouldn't be shocked if Star Select did the same with StarPlus both are owned by Disney Star (formerly Star India).

Just curious as to why companies like Warner Bros. Discovery and the already mentioned like to build competition for themselves. In the above-mentioned case, you could say it helps consumers explore other parts of India but for Warner not really.

New Channel Alert: MultiChoice To Add Mustaeina TV As Second Ramadan Based Pop-Up Channel To The DStv Platform From April

Mustaeina TV, founded in 2017 is an Islamic lifestyle channel, aimed to rightly re-trace the steps and educate Muslims and Non-Muslims audience towards the better understanding of Islam according to Qur'an and sunnah via various activities such as: Soul lifting sermons, halaal skits, vox-pop, modest, fashion, nasheed, talk show etc.

Started as an online Dawah TV and aimed to become the biggest all Islamic and all Hilaal TV platform out of Nigeria with our own broadcasting station, a network where your mind is always at rest, devoid of any form of fitnah and haram views and tunes without compromising high quality visual contents.

In the past years, Mustaeina TV has supplied various content across platforms and television stations primarily in Nigeria with the likes of Silverbird and TVC both of which can be viewed on DStv and GOtv platforms.

As mentioned across several platforms MultiChoice will allocate Mustaeina TV on channel 197 through the DStv platform in the coming weeks. Making it the second Ramadan based pop-up channel to be seen across their platforms.

The first being Hilaal TV started out as Ramadaan TV a pop-up channel in 2022 for similar intentions as Mustaeina TV and was well recieved amongst consumers that MultiChoice opted for a full-time brand and it wouldn't be shocking if Mustaeina TV underwent something similar.

From what sources mentioned about the channel it's basically another Rhema TV as it will broadcast 4:05pm to 4:35pm daily in the whole month of Ramadan featuring shows like Artiste Focus, Icovers and Mosques From Across The World.

I get this channel doesn't have much content but Hilaal TV took a similar path as they only broadcast original programming same goes for INX Prime wherever that one maybe so why not Mustaeina TV making it the second Nigerian religious channel after Emmanuel.

Recap To Past Week: Showmax To Rollout First Ever Original Animated Series, Jay Jay: The Chosen One This April

Since African pay TV giant MultiChoice launched the continent’s first homegrown SVOD service Showmax in 2015, the streamer always planned to enter the kids content market with original animated productions.

Now, its dream will finally become reality.

After an 18-month development and production phase, Showmax’s first original animated series, Jay Jay: The Chosen One, is set to premiere on April 6. Based on the childhood of Nigerian football legend and animal lover Augustine “Jay Jay” Okocha, the 13-episode kids series (pictured) reimagines Okocha as both an aspiring tween footballer and a superhero who fights against illegal poaching.

Though the fantasy-adventure story is fully African, Showmax drew inspiration from Star India’s animated show Super V.

“Super V is based on Indian international cricketer Virat Kohli and reimagines him as a superhero with a massive passion for cricket,” says Yolisa Phahle , CEO of Showmax and connected video at MultiChoice. “So the original idea for Jay Jay came from the Indian producers of that show, but we loved the idea and thought, how could we make something like that work in our market?”
Showmax ultimately chose one of Super V’s animation producers, I-Realities, to animate Jay Jay, along with two other Indian studios—Nihilent and 5th Dimension. But in sticking to its local strategy as much as possible, the SVOD brought in its local Nigerian team and Jay Jay himself to keep the show authentic. Showmax is also the sole investor in the project, it hired an all Nigerian voice cast and enlisted popular Nigerian singer and vocalist, Waje, to record the show’s soundtrack.

Phahle says it was the right time to get into original animation, due to factors including Africa’s young population, and the overall popularity of animation locally and globally.

“Africa is massive, and in terms of population it is a very young continent,” she says. “More than 60% of its population is under the age of 25 and by 2030, young Africans are expected to make up 42% of global youth, according to the World Economic Forum.”

Additionally, Phahle points to the declining cost of data in Africa and its rising average GDP as reasons more Africans will be able to watch content via streaming. “We believe that our industry and environment is ready for exponential growth,” she says.

Though Showmax doesn’t publish its subscriber numbers, the service now has a 50-market footprint in sub-Saharan Africa and is available in a raft of international territories including Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Indonesia and the UK.

Showmax currently makes around 6,000 hours of local programming per year across all genres to differentiate itself from other streamers, explains Phahle, and its primary production regions are Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.

“Short term, we want original animation for West Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa,” she says. “And depending on how successful the [projects] are we will probably think about other regions.”
She notes that the SVOD’s next original animated kids series will hail from East Africa and be animated in Africa, but is mum on further details.

As for production budgets or how much money Showmax will be spending specifically on original kids animation, Phahle won’t say, but generally speaking, she says the SVOD will be investing more money in local production across sub-Saharan Africa and wants its original animation to resonate locally and abroad.
“Our long-term goal is to build the animation industry on our continent and to give our children characters and stories that reflect, educate and inspire them, and content they can enjoy with their parents,” says Phahle. “Ultimately we believe that if we do this well enough, the stories will also find audiences outside of Africa.”

Along with original animation, Showmax has other plans to scale up. Earlier this month Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky took a 30% stake in the streamer (MultiChoice has 70%). The partnership will enable MultiChoice to launch a new Showmax service, leveraging Peacock’s streaming technology and gaining access to more premium content.

A launch date, content and pricing details are yet-to-be-revealed, but the new platform will combine Showmax’s local content, general entertainment, sports and family programming—which already includes international shows and movies from NBCUniversal, Warner Brothers International, HBO and Sony—with more new content licensed from NBCUniversal and Sky, as well as live English Premier League soccer matches.

“We will be taking kids programming from NBCU, and we already do to some degree, so we will continue to have a good mix of local kids and YA programming along with the best of international,” says Phahle. “Peacock is a very stable platform that scales to millions of subscribers so we’re excited to work with their tech teams as we look to reach millions of new subscribers in Africa.”

In terms of potential international co-pro partnerships on original animation, Phale says Showmax is open to the possibilities. “It’s wonderful to work with experts who have different experiences and skill sets, and it’s great to be able to consolidate budgets and serve a bigger audience in one go, so yes, we are open to it,” she says. “But our core focus is on empowering African creatives to tell African stories for Africans.”

Looking ahead, Phahle says her biggest challenge in terms of original animation will be scrutinizing timelines and deadlines.

“Animation takes much longer to produce than reality or talk shows, for example, so we are going to have to plan quite far ahead if we want to have a good pipeline,” she says. “The opportunity, if we get it right, is absolutely huge because there’s massive demand for animators worldwide. We know there are animators in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa who are working with big studios. But I think the industry could grow a lot more.”

Recap To The Past Decade: eMedia Investments And Amazon Prime Video Sign Content Distribution Agreement

Several years ago, Asian based streamer VIU signed a content distribution agreement with eMedia Investments for various original productions including Scandal and Imbewu and that went to hell after the said supplier breached their contract.

Now with eMedia Investments' contract with the party set to expire by next year. Questions amount to whether or not a new agreement would be put in place as consumers on these platforms rely on the streamer for several content seen on SABC and e.tv channels.

As eMedia Investments look to funnel their remaining original productions from VIU to eVOD.

In the past years so to speak, Amazon Prime Video had begun strengthening their bond with eMedia Investments or in this case particularly with streamer eVOD for various films including Eye For An Eye, Piet's Sake and Abafana Ababi.

Two new films debuted earlier in the month, Tickets and Piet's Sake 2 (also known as Pete's Sake 2) and as mentioned they aren't available to view on eVOD if they were why not advertise your own content to better inform consumers.

From what I can establish here, eMedia Investments similar to DreamWorks Animation and Telemundo are producing streaming based content something the SABC wants to embark on but in this case not all the content will be produced on their respective streamer.

So consumers will have to get used to the fact that eMedia Investments will produce content and some of it won't be on eVOD firsthand. While those that can be seen on eVOD will likely be confined to a paywall as seen with eVOD's originals on Amazon Prime Video.

New Movie Alert: eMedia Investments In Partnership With Amazon Prime Video Drop Two New Productions, Tickets And Piet's Sake 2

eMedia Investments similar to MultiChoice and French company Canal+ seem to be going on a joint venture with the international streamer, Amazon Prime Video. As they unveiled two new local productions for streamers earlier in the month, Tickets and Piet's Sake 2.

Synopsis for Tickets:

Young lovers Crystal and Marlyn can’t keep their hands off each other. He dreams of rapping and she dreams of singing on the big stage. What they both actually want, is just a way out of the Flats. Phyllis, Crystal’s Mom, lives with a heavy secret, the burden of hiding it is driving a wedge between her and her daughter.

The film stars Robyn Rossouw, Monique Rockman and Danny Ross. Marvin-Lee Beukes whose known for his work on kykNET's Binnelanders and Suidooster sitting in the director's seat for the film, Tickets.

Synopsis for Piet's Sake 2:

When the son of a well-off Zulu polygamist squares off with his Indian varsity lecturer over who can be a youth or an adult better than the other, life gives them an opportunity to swap lives and live out their differences through a comedy of errors.

The film stars Starring Motlatsi Mafatshe, Kaseran Pillay and Warren Masemola. Norman Maake who known for Mzansi Magic's It's Complicated reprises his directing role to the sequel of Piet's Sake which for some reason is also titled Pete's Sake 2.

Those using eVOD may find it hard to view Piet's Sake 2 or Tickets as Amazon Prime Video obtained streaming rights. Unlike, most of eVOD's originals these ones were also managed by Amazon Prime Video so there's no clue on if this will be seen on eVOD.

If you're new to Amazon Prime Video, you get a 7 day free trial of the streaming service.
