"There Are A Variety Of Other Channels That Contain Similar Content", MultiChoice On The Closures Of MTV Base, BET, CBS Reality And CBS Justice On DStv

As reported moments ago, CBS Reality, CBS Justice, BET and MTV Base will be exiting DStv soon due to a corporate restructure at Paramount. For DStv consumers particularly high end subscribers that are hoping to be compensated there no plans to replace these channels.

MultiChoice when asked about the matter pertaining to BET and MTV Base

"There are a variety of other channels that contain similar content, such as Sound City, Channel O, Trace Urban or Trace Africa for music, or Mzansi Magic, M-Net, Bravo, and Movie Room for viewers who prefer series and movie entertainment.”

MultiChoice when asked about the matter pertaining to shows like Judge Judy on CBS Reality

"Customers can continue to enjoy a wide range of local and international reality and investigative content across our bouquet of channels.”

However the fact that MultiChoice has no workaround to such doesn't mean there won't be one eventually. Best guess here is that MultiChoice will be widening the reach certain channels within 2026.

For MTV Base, this could as well be Trace Africa to DStv Access but like MultiChoice has stated there's plenty of channels for local music. There's been an increase in online usage for platforms like Spotify which partially contributed to the channel's demise.

For CBS Reality, this could as well be the additions of Discovery Family to DStv Access or Curiosity Channel to DStv Family subscribers. As highlighted, there's a wide range of local and international reality and investigative content.

Lastly for other DStv consumers, MultiChoice had been part of a corporate buyout by French broadcaster Canal+. Through its sub division, Canal+ Afrique had boasted about 4000 hours of African content which is currently being integrated with MultiChoice.

From 9 December, MultiChoice will be adding Sunu Yeuf, Pulaagu, Mandeka, Maboke and Zacu TV currently seen on Canal+ Afrique to DStv. These channels form part of 4000 hours content slate the company is introducing in select African markets.

Scheduling Update: BET And MTV Base Will Stop Airing On DStv From January 1st At 9AM CAT

As reported moments ago, CBS Reality, CBS Justice, BET and MTV Base will be exiting DStv soon due to a corporate restructure at Paramount. This had led to several linear channels to shut down from across the globe and this included various MTV branded channels.

MultiChoice sent a notice to various DStv consumers informing them that these 4 channels would be exiting DStv by 31 December 2025. Yet on the programme guide, BET and MTV Base are only scheduled to close by 1 January 2025 at 9AM CAT.

This could mean several things the first Paramount could be curating special programming for the channels. As I understand it, MTV Base had been curating content to celebrate 20 years perhaps BET with its 10 year presence is being stringed along.

Their closures seemed abrupt when it was first announced and this could be their way of trying of settling the score or rather make amends.

On the MultiChoice side of things, the company will now to have work around the clock to allocate more content or risk losing subscribers. Since their buyout by Canal+, DStv consumers have seen some enhancement with the addition of Ligue 1 and NBA on SuperSport.

Canal+ is expected to provide a detailed report about its plans for MultiChoice by next year. Some of which include merging their operations with that of MultiChoice a process in which the company is expected to conclude within 12 to 18 months.

Channel Closure: CBS Reality And CBS Justice Will Stop Airing On DStv From 31 December 2025

Due to a corporate restructure at Paramount, DStv consumers will be bidding farewell to both BET and MTV Base as the channels are set to close by 31 December 2025. Joining the duo will be CBS Reality and CBS Justice in which the company operate alongside AMC Networks International.

This will follow a slate of channels by both companies which are set to shutter by the end of 2025. This includes CBS Reality in Poland, BET in France, Nickelodeon's channels in New Zealand and MTV's music channels across the whole of Europe.

CBS Reality was added onto MultiChoice's DStv by November 2001 as Zone Reality offering reality based content and documentaries. It was known for shows like Cheaters, Judge Judy, Dogs Behaving Very Badly, Border Patrol: Beyond Borders and Hardcore Pawn.

It's closure means DStv consumers won't be seeing the final season of Judge Judy as CBS Reality was currently broadcasting it's 21st season.

MultiChoice added CBS Justice as a replacement to Hearst's Crime + Investigation by November 2019. Serving as a spin-off to CBS Reality, it offered shows like Murder Made Me Famous, World's Most Evil Killers and Donal MacIntyre's Murder Files.

As reported, MultiChoice will be adding four pop-up channels for the festive holidays: DStv 30, AFCON, fliekNET and The Holiday Channel. They are also running an Upsize promotion on various DStv packages which will just serve as distractions.

Canal+ is currently integrating it's African operations with that of MultiChoice following its acquisition of the company. This has led to the further additions of Sunu Yeuf (Senegalese), Pulaagu (Pulaar/Fulfulde), Mandeka (Mandinka and related Manding languages) and Maboke (Lingala).

New Channel Alert: Sunu Yeuf, Pulaagu, Mandeka And Maboke Coming Soon To DStv

During the month, it was reported that MultiChoice would be adding Rwandan based channel Zacu TV to the DStv platform. This forms part of Canal+'s integration plans with MultiChoice following its acquisition of the company a few months ago.

DStv consumers will soon have access to more African based programming with the additions of Sunu Yeuf, Pulaagu, Mandeka And Maboke. Currently seen on Canal+ Afrique, the channels will be made available to DStv consumers in select markets by 9 December.

Sunu Yeuf is operated by Senegalese production company Marodi TV, one of the major players in the creation of series in Africa. These include Pod & Marichou, Maitresse D'un Homme MariƩ (Mistress Of A Married Man) and Karma.

Pulaagu is a general entertainment channel offering series in Pulaar/Fulfulde, highlighting the customs and traditions of the Fulbe with cult, recent, and unpublished series like Hakkee Rewbe, Thierno Abou and Jamano (Cultural Epic).

Mandeka is a general entertainment channel that focuses on 100% African content, specifically films and series in the Bambara and Malinke languages. It offers a variety of programs, including dramas like Polygamie and N' Khele.

Maboke is a general entertainment channel which broadcasts solely in Lingala which is widely spoken in Congo. The programming focuses on local productions such as Chez Coco, Bilombe Ya Basi, and Tribunal Ya Bolingo.

DStv Getting Four New Pop-Up Channels For The Festive Season

• DStv has confirmed the four pop-up channels that will be available from now, throughout the festive season.
• Each of the channels will be available until specific dates in January next year.
• DStv is also adding a dedicated channel for AFCON 2025.

With schools set to close soon, and children spending more time at home for the festive season, DStv has confirmed that four pop-up channels will be made available to subscribers to enjoy more content over the coming weeks and into the New Year.

The channels are also part of the company’s 30th birthday celebrations.

“DStv subscribers have welcomed us into their homes for 30 years, and 2025 has been our year of giving back,” noted Willington Ngwepe, CEO of MultiChoice, in a release with Hypertext.

“From 10 November, the DStv Upsize campaign has given DStv Family and Access subscribers automatic access to all DStv Compact channels, and all DStv Compact and Compact Plus subscribers access to every DStv Premium channel. Now, as families reunite over the festive season, DStv is coming to the party – and since we never arrive empty-handed, we’re bringing a feast of four pop-up channels that celebrate thewatch-together spirit,” he added.

As for the new pop-up channels, they are as follows:

• The Holiday Channel (Channel 198) – until 3rd January 2026,
• DStv 30 (Channel 197) – from 1st December 2025 to 21st January 2026),
• FliekNET (Channel 149) – from 12th December 2025 to 11th January 2026,
• SuperSport AFCON 2025 (Channels 202 and 222) – from 18th December 2025 to 19th January 2026.

As far as content is concerned, the Holiday Channel is fairly self explanatory, but DStv 30 is focused on nostalgia. In particular, it will showcase some of the best original television that DStv created over the past three decades.

“DStv 30 is nostalgia in overload mode as Scot Scott jumps back in his helicopter for Fortuinsoekers Season 2 on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6PM. Catch the early-early days of Our Perfect Wedding on Saturdays at 6PM, oil empire drama series Jacob’s Cross on Wednesdays at 8PM, M-Net’s filmed-on-location game lodge telenovela The Wild on Thursday nights at 8PM, Carte Blanche’s most impactful episodes on Sunday nights at 7PM, and much more,” the broadcaster highlighted.

As for fliekNET, it will be serving up the best Silwerskerm shorts from the last two editions, DStv pointed out. “This includes Noise & Neighbours (on Tuesday, 16 December at 8:05PM), which recently won Best International Short Film at the Chelsea Film Festival in New York,” it continued.

Lastly, for the 35th Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), taking place in Morocco, two dedicated channels – SS AFCON 2025 Channel 202 and SS AFCON 2025 Channel 222.

Sweet Love Coming Soon To Star Life

Star Life, an English dubbed Bollywood channel operated by JioStar that offers a variety of series and movies has announced the addition of a new series Sweet Love. Known in India as Kabhi Neem Neem Kabhi Shahad Shahad, the series airs from 3 December at 22:30 CAT.

Synopsis for Sweet Love

Katha and UV's paths cross in college, leading to an initial heated argument where Katha makes a remark about UV's mother, wounding his pride. In a fit of rage, UV decides to teach Katha a lesson by charming her into falling in love with him as part of a plot with his friends. Katha, initially impressed by his perceived kindness, starts developing feelings for him, unaware of his true intentions. The deception is exposed when Katha overhears UV discussing his successful plan, leaving her heartbroken and reinforcing her belief that men are untrustworthy.

Katha Kumari Jindal: A compassionate botanist who is reserved and has a strong moral compass. She has a deep-seated distrust of men and marriage due to her mother's past experiences.

Udayveer "UV" Jindal: A handsome, charismatic chef who runs a cafĆ© and appears carefree on the surface but deeply misses his mother, who was forced to leave the family home years ago due to manipulation by his aunt.

Based on the series Kothha, Sweet Love premiered on StarPlus on 6 June and concluded on 22 September 2025 with 106 half hour episodes. It starred Afia Tayebali as Katha Kumari Jindal and Abrar Qazi as Udayveer "UV" Jindal.

Sweet Love airs daily at 21:30 CAT replacing Sacred Love from 3 December alongside Bound By Love at 22:30 and Noyontara: The Hidden Truth at 22:00. Later in the month, Star Life will also be rolling out a female centered series titled Ishani.

Insult To Injury. MultiChoice Might Be Reviving Me As A Pop-Up Channel On DStv

Last year, MultiChoice and M-Net decided to do away with Me and 1Magic as part of its streamlining endeavours with further content folded under Showmax. From the looks of things, it appears as if MultiChoice is now pushing to have Universal TV and Bravo to pick up the cracks.

Bravo and Universal TV are owned by NBCUniversal who have a 30% stake in Showmax so the idea of MultiChoice using these brands as replacements doesn't seem far fetched. Canal+ Afrique whose parent company took control of MultiChoice had been distributing them in place of the channels.

For a limited time, MultiChoice had given its Premium and Compact+ consumers an open window to Showmax through 1Max. This is what the company had put in place of 1Magic while those viewing Me got nothing.

Fast forward to 2025, it looks like MultiChoice may be looking to revive Me in a not-so-distant future most likely like how 1Max was set up for 1Magic.

MultiChoice had been experimenting on the channel but this carnation of the brand looks nothing like Me or it's previous forms being M-Net City, M-Net Series Zone and The Series Channel.

Me would boast a variety of international series and films while this version only exists to promote local content from M-Net's stable being Tonight With Trevor Noah, Gomora and The Wedding Bashers. It's kind of like what they did with M-Net Binge and not long ago with 1Max and 1Magic.

M-Net Binge was a catch-up channel for M-Net's programming then was shuttered and revived as an HBO pop-up channel. 1Magic which infused with South African flavour was folded under a Pan-African tailored brand like 1Max.

At least for these incarnates some fragments of the content was retained unlike Me in this regard whose offering is just limited to local content or repeats. Gomora had already been viewed on Mzansi Magic with Vallei Van Sullei on KykNet & Kie why is it being used to hype up a pop-up channel.

The only rash explanation would be the Mzansi Magic 16 pop-up channel the company had launched a few months ago. For the festive holidays, they revived it but now as "The Me Channel" but with KykNet's lineup of content.

Interesting to note, M-Net City which served as Me's previous incarnations was initially suppose to launch as an entertainment channel for South African programming. Before M-Net scrapped plans to launch the channel only for the trademark to be revived as a placemat for M-Net Series Zone.

Bound By Love Coming Soon To Star Life

Star Life, an English dubbed Bollywood channel operated by JioStar that offers a variety of series and movies has announced the addition of a new series Bound By Love. Known in India as Bohot Pyaar Karte Hai, the series airs from 3 December at 22:30 CAT.

Synopsis for Bound By Love

The story begins with Indu, an optimistic and kind-hearted woman, who is deeply in love with a man named Mahesh. However, when she goes to propose to him, she discovers he is already married. Mahesh insults Indu and beats her father, leading to their breakup.

Emotionally shattered, Indu boards a bus back home. On the journey, she helps a pregnant woman deliver a baby. The woman, named Kadambari, later abandons the newborn baby and leaves a note asking Indu to raise the child. Indu, seeing a new hope in her life, decides to adopt the girl, names her Zoon, and raises her as her own, despite initial opposition from her family.

Bound By Love premiered on Star Bharat on 5 July and concluded on 10 December 2022 with 133 half hour episodes. It starred Karan V Grover as Ritesh Malhotra, Sayali Salunkhe as Indu Raina and Kiara Sadh as Zoon Raina basically lead roles.

Prior to its rollout, The Evil Eye Returns will conclude on 2 December with Noyontara: The Hidden Truth replacing the show at 22:00 with Bound By Love at 22:30 on 3 December. Other shows expected to rollout on the channel within the month is Ishani.

Disney's Linear TV Channels Return To Sky Italia

Disney's linear TV channels are coming back to Sky. In a few days, as ItaliaOggi can exclusively reveal, the partnership agreement between the Burbank giant and Comcast’s broadcaster will be officially announced. The deal will bring some of Disney’s rich content catalogue — including Disney, FX, Hulu, etc. — back to good old traditional linear television channels, which, contrary to what many analysts have claimed for years, never actually go out of fashion.

Soon, therefore, Sky Italia subscribers will enjoy a new Disney-branded channel, with potential future developments in the areas of animation, TV series, movies, and documentaries.

Sky’s strategy

All of this fits into a broader strategic redesign in which Sky is reshaping its partnership perimeter based on the value perceived by its subscribers. This same logic explains the recent acquisitions of TV rights for basketball and rugby, the renewal of the UEFA agreement for Champions League rights from 2027–2031, and the ongoing negotiations with Liberty Media-Dorna for the renewal of MotoGP rights (whose current deal expires at the end of 2025). MotoGP currently finds itself with TV ratings halved, a championship of little interest, and no standout personalities apart from Marc MĆ”rquez — yet it is unlikely to give up its relationship with Sky (the platform that still guarantees the greatest visibility for the two-wheeled circus) and may simply accept a lower fee for the rights.

The end of the partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery

The agreement with Disney comes just as Sky Italia’s long relationship with Warner Bros. Discovery is officially coming to an end. As is already known, from 1 July 2025 all Eurosport, Discovery, and even the free-to-air channels of the WBD group disappeared from Sky. On 31 December 2025, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, all Warner films, and new HBO series will definitively leave the platform. HBO, controlled by WBD, was the home of flagship titles such as House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Succession, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and The Pitt.

The future of HBO and Warner content on Sky
From 2026 onwards, Sky will still be able to broadcast new seasons of most of those existing franchises (with the exception of The Pitt), but no longer on an exclusive basis. However, it will no longer have direct access to new Warner or HBO films and brand-new series.

At least not directly. Because, thanks to the many new partnerships Sky is signing, Warner content that has “left through the door” may very well come back in “through the window” — possibly via Peacock, Netflix, or other platforms.

Paramount Likely To Be The Frontrunner In Bid For Warner Bros. Discovery

Paramount is the frontrunner in the race to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, according to a new report from the NY Post. What’s giving Paramount the advantage? A source for the NY Post says that Paramount is the only company to make an offer that includes CNN as part of the deal.

Paramount, Comcast, and Netflix all submitted bids by the deadline on November 20, with Comcast and Netflix showing interest in the studio and streaming side of the business, while Paramount made an offer to buy it all.

While any sale would have to go through regulatory approval, the NY Post says that Paramount will have a much easier time moving through that process. The company got FCC approval for its merger with Skydance after settling a a $16 million lawsuit with President Trump over a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election, and making a promise to commit to to “unbiased journalism” by airing news and entertainment programming across the political spectrum. Post-sale, Paramount put Bari Weiss of The Free Press in charge of news.

Now, CNN could be getting the CBS News treatment. If Paramount succeeds in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN would likely also be put under Weiss’ management and made more Trump administration-friendly. Knowing that, Paramount owners are likely to quickly be given the greenlight in the regulatory approval process while Netflix and Comcast, the NY Post points out, would not.

Comcast owns left-leaning news network MSNBC, which CEO Brian Roberts is spinning off, along with other networks including CNBC and USA, into a new entity called Versant. Netflix leaders Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos have been known to support left-leaning causes. Those ties might work against both companies with this administration, on top of Comcast and Netflix only showing interest in half of the Warner Bros. Discovery business.

Noyontara: The Hidden Truth Coming Soon To Star Life

Star Life, an English dubbed Bollywood channel operated by JioStar that offers a variety of series and movies has announced the addition of a new series Noyontara: The Hidden Truth from 3 December at 22:00 CAT.

Upon moving into the grand yet eerie ancestral home, "Pari Mahal," Noyontara is pulled into a web of dark family secrets. She finds an unlikely ally in Hasiram, a mischievous child ghost, who helps her uncover the history of greed and forgotten truths within the mansion.

The central conflict arises when Noyontara encounters two women, both claiming to be her mother-in-law, Lalita.

Afrikaans Adaptation Of The Office To Premiere In January On Showmax

African streamer Showmax is in production on a South African adaptation of global hit format The Office, licensed by BBC Studios.

kykNET will preview the first episode at 8PM on Sunday, 18 January, ahead of the Showmax double bill premiere on Tuesday, 20 January.

It was more than 20 years ago that the world was introduced to the wonderfully bleak mockumentary world of The Office, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. MetaCritic lists the original British version as the best-reviewed comedy series of all time, while the American version won five Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and was the most streamed show in the world in 2020.

This universal appeal has seen the BAFTA- and Golden Globe-winning cult comedy remade for audiences around the world, including Australia, France, Canada, Chile, Israel, India, the Middle East, and Poland.

The South African edition of The Office, to be called Die Kantoor, will be its 14th adaptation and will be filmed primarily in Afrikaans.

Rapid Blue, part of BBC Studios, is producing the Showmax Original, with BBC Studios handling global sales.

SAFTA and Silwerskerm winner Bennie Fourie is the head writer and director. He is the co-creator of SAFTA Best TV Comedy winner Hotel and plays Baltus in the award-winning mockumentary Magda Louw.

“It's a massive honour to be able to make the show,” says Bennie. “When we started way back with Hotel, this was the type of show that we were trying to emulate. I don’t think we were ready to make it then but after 10 years of playing with the mockumentary genre, now is the perfect time for us to do this. Everything has really fallen into place and we’re extremely excited.”

Bennie is clear he’s not just translating The Office into Afrikaans to remake it shot-by-shot with local actors. Instead, he’s reimagined it from the ground up. “South Africa is not the UK and it’s not the US, and we really wanted to reflect that,” says Bennie.

This started by changing the office setting from a paper company to Deluxe Processed Meats, which specialises in polony.

“South Africa is a proud meat-consuming nation,” says Bennie. “From biltong to droĆ«wors to steak, many South Africans find some of our identity in the meat we eat. But polony is not on that list. It’s just so flippen pink. When you’re standing around a braai, the last thing you want to say is that you are passionate about polony. Especially after that Listeriosis outbreak.”

The staff are looked down upon by their head office, Deluxe Meats, who specialise in prime cuts, and no one feels safe in their positions, as a BBBEE business consortium recently bought a large part of the company.

Rapid Blue produced Is’thunzi, which earned Thuso Mbedu two International Emmy nominations. They’ve assembled a mix of familiar and fresh faces for Die Kantoor, led by 2025 Fleur du Cap winner Albert Pretorius (Niggies; NĆŖrens, Noord-Kaap) as Flip, the office manager.

“Flip’s only been the manager for the last year but he’s excited to welcome the documentary crew,” says Bennie. “He feels like this is his Chasing the Sun; like his rise to greatness needs to be recorded.”

The ensemble cast also includes SAFTA winner Schalk Bezuidenhout (Kanarie, Hotel), screen legend Lida Botha (Die Kwiksilvers), Carl Beukes (Jozi, The Shakedown), Silwerskerm winner Ilse Oppelt (Oh Schuks I’m Gatvol, Fishy FĆŖshuns), Daniah de Villiers (Mia in Mia and the White Lion), Mehboob Bawa (Bhai in Bhai’s Cafe), former KFM presenter Sipumziwe Lucwaba, and newcomer Gert du Plessis.

“Our very first Showmax Original was a mockumentary, Tali’s Wedding Diary, so reimagining the most iconic mockumentary of them all has been a full circle moment for us,” says Tracy-Ann van Rooyen, executive head of content at Showmax, part of MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company.

The announcement comes as South Africa celebrates being in third place overall at tonight’s International Emmy Awards in New York, with a record five nominations: Showmax’s Koek (Drama) and Catch Me A Killer (Actress: Charlotte Hope), M-Net’s School Ties (Documentary), SuperSport’s Chasing The Sun 2 (Sports Documentary), and Play Room Live (Kids: Factual and Entertainment).

While you wait for the South African version in January, re-watch the US version of The Office S1-9 on Showmax.

Paramount Will Likely Streamline Warner Bros. Discovery If It's Acquisition Is Successful

David Ellison had recently formed Paramount Skydance and is currently in pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery. If it's takeover bid is successful, this would bring Paramount's CBS, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central alongside WBD's CNN, HGTV and Discovery under one umbrella.

Paramount had stated that if their acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery is successful both companies would continue operate independently think of DreamWorks Animation and Illumination. Although, no merger plans are underway that doesn't exclude the possibility of reductions.

MTV will be shutting down its music channels by the end of 2025 across the world alongside various other channels. Paramount is undergoing a restructure and wants to align their remaining brands to streaming and Warner Bros. Discovery will follow in this pursuit.

Paramount intends to merge it's 79 million subscribers on Paramount+ with that of 128 million from HBO Max. This would give them 209 million subscribers and their rival Disney+ would fall short at 195 following its merger with Hulu.

Rather than scale back on spending in the event of an acquisition, Paramount wants to increase content spend with its buyout of Warner Bros. Discovery. With over 200 million subscribers, that is very much possible in such a scenario think of Netflix and how much content it offers in a year.

The issues pertaining to the buyout is a difference in narratives if Warner Bros. Discovery had diversity initiatives that is likely to get phased out. Prior to the Paramount takeover, Skydance didn't offer such and never intended to do so same could be awaiting this buyout.

As for creative teams, Paramount wants to continue to keep those separate but it's less likely that the number of employees would remain the same in such a transaction. If there's an underperforming studio, that is most definitely expected to shut down.

Lastly cable networks, as reported Paramount will be closing several channels before the year ends most of which were regional. Warner Bros. Discovery is a company which carries a lot of cable networks mainly from Discovery Inc. with others viewed internationally.

Paramount could opt to retain Discovery Channel, HGTV and Cartoon Network as these brands have global appeal. Perhaps phase out underperforming/niche brands like Travel Channel alongside regional ones like TNT and Real Time.

What remains clear here in Warner Bros. Discovery's pursuit of a potential buyer with Comcast, Netflix and Paramount being eyed. HBO Max could be consolidated under another rival platform and also massive layoffs await whatever is left of the company.

Could Warner Bros. Discovery Be Moving Various Content From Cartoonito To Cartoon Network In Africa?

In March 2023, it was announced that Boomerang would be rebranding to Cartoonito as part of an alignment strategy. At the time, it was stated that all of Boomerang's shows would be retained once the channel switches to Cartoonito this included shows like Mr. Bean and Looney Tunes Cartoons.

Cartoonito is a preschool brand operated by Warner Bros. Discovery that offers fun and entertaining content for kids and their families. This was this structure the company opted to market in some parts of Europe while others tried to align it with Disney Jr. and Nick Jr.

But alas, Mr. Magoo was announced as a new series for Cartoon Network although being made available to Cartoonito when it was still Boomerang. It could imply one of two scenarios first Warner Bros. Discovery blantly lied another could be that their removals part of the long term goals.

This is what happened to Cartoonito in Latin America when it replaced Boomerang so why would Africa be immune to these changes. Warner Bros. Discovery had a goal and that was to get Boomerang viewers to latch onto Cartoonito to avoid further alienation.

Warner Bros. Discovery in Africa had stated the decision to transform Boomerang into Cartoonito was part of an "alignment strategy". The reality is in most markets Cartoonito is basically another Nick Jr. or Cbeebies with gaps in-between for other content.

Cartoon Network has been getting various content Warner Bros. Discovery marketed for Boomerang like Tiny Toons Looniversity and soon Scooby-Doo And Guess Who?. Even Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated that went to Boomerang after its run has resurfaced on the network.

What happened to Cartoonito retaining all of Boomerang's IPs are these set to become an afterthought?

Cartoon Network will be airing Space Jam: A New Legacy in December and it wouldn't surprise me if it led to the addition of Looney Tunes Cartoons. Some consumers had stated that these shows were too mature for a preschool brand and Warner Bros. Discovery let this subside for almost two years.

They led some people to believe that Cartoonito was Boomerang's equivalent within Africa yet you have all this content on Cartoon Network. In the UK, most of this content including Tiny Toons Looniversity is being distributed on Boomerang.

On the upside, I don't think most consumers would have noticed or cared as much if these shows were to suddenly disappear from Cartoonito. They have prioritised on other shows like Zig & Sharko, Batwheels and Cocomelon it could've been a lot worser had this been done two years earlier.

If anything this change does add more confusion and mystery, Boomerang had prioritized on reruns for their own shows. Seeing as it's no longer Boomerang how much of that would be distributed on Cartoonito because so far it seems like the stars could be aligning with Cartoon Network.

Harry Potter: Wizards Of Baking Brings Mystical Festive Baked Goods To Food Network Africa, Premieres Saturday 6 December At 18:00 CAT

Viewers and legions of Harry Potter fans are in for a treat as Food Network's Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking returns for a magical new chapter this holiday season. Premiering Saturday, 6 December at 14:00 CAT on Food Network (DStv Channel 175), Chapter Two will feature even more spellbinding creations, enchanted elements and baking wizardry as a new field of competitors embark on the experience of a lifetime. Capitalising on the enduring love for Harry Potter, a global phenomenon that continues to captivate people of all ages around the world, the groundbreaking series blends legendary storytelling and fantastical edible creations in a competition that had audiences on the edge of their seats last year.

In its debut season, the series drew 40% more viewers compared to the channel average¹ and saw viewership spike by 172% on Christmas Day², cementing the episode as a festive favourite.

Returning hosts James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley) bring their charm, humour and behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and are joined by esteemed culinary judges Carla Hall and Jozef Youssef, who bring their discerning palates and high expectations to the table. Across the six-episode season, special guests Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick), Afshan Azad (Padma Patil) and Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan) help evaluate the competitors' showpieces as they share their own stories from the films.

Reflecting on the series’ evolution, James Phelps shared, “We knew what to expect going into season two, and the standard just keeps getting higher and higher through this season as well.” His twin brother Oliver added, “Right off the bat, we see some absolutely incredible desserts this time around. One team made a smoked chocolate patisserie that was just unbelievably cool.”

In the two-hour premiere, eight teams of two start their journey in The Great Hall, where the Sorting Hat sorts them into one of the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. The first challenge is to craft captivating, edible showpieces inspired by moments from the Harry Potter series and each team's respective Hogwarts house. Week to week, the teams face a new task for which they must design creations that deliver on taste, creativity and visual spectacle, and this season, winning challenges can yield an advantage for a team in the next episode, or the chance to bestow an impediment to others.

The series was once again shot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden including amidst the backdrop of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, on some of the original sets where Harry Potter's journey was brought to life on screen, including such famed locations as Platform 9¾, The Great Hall, and Diagon Alley, as well as The Potions Room, Privet Drive, the Destroyed Gringotts Bank and the triple-decker Knight Bus. “It felt like we’d been teleported back to our Potter days,” said Oliver. “It was quite a nostalgic thing to be part of, it’s really awesome to relive that.”

"Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking brings together perfectly the magic of Harry Potter with the exquisite culinary artistry that exemplifies why Food Network is a holiday destination for viewers each year," said Betsy Ayala, Head of Content, Food, Warner Bros. Discovery. "The success of season one shows the magic that can happen when collaborating across divisions as we did with Warner Horizon in marrying an iconic property with a fan-favourite genre. The next chapter of this delicious competition promises to bring even more joy to fans this holiday season."

Teams competing are: Alex Madrigal (Playa Del Carmen, Mexico) and Jenny Chambers (Salisbury, UK), Andy Ortega (Yonkers, NY) and Stefan Rose (Yorkshire, UK), Angel Figueroa (Denver, CO) and Rui Mota (Lisbon, Portugal), Caitlin Taylor (Bowie, MD) and Jaleesa Mason (Bloomfield, NJ), Heather Tocco (Rochester, MI) and Kate Sigel (Nashville, TN), Marj Santaromana (Richmond, VA) and Sarah Arnold (Charleston, SC), Molly Robbins (Lancashire, UK) and Priya Winsor (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada), and Jujhar Mann (Surrey, BC, Canada) and Katie Bonzer (Orlando, FL).

A group of lucky fans will have the opportunity to attend the grand finale, where the remaining teams must make a showpiece that celebrates the Goblet of Fire in a nod to the 20th anniversary of the fourth film in the series. In the end, one victorious team will take home the trophy and be crowned the Wizards of Baking.

Food Network Africa had the opportunity to chat with James and Oliver Phelps to get some insight into Chapter Two. Reflecting on the show’s growing international fan base, Oliver shared, “It’s been amazing speaking to people all over the world who watch the show and hearing how they ask each other, ‘What would you make?’ It really connects people through creativity and culture.” James added with a laugh, “I think someone should definitely make a biltong-shaped cake – that would be brilliant!”

7 Years Ago, Discovery's Real Time Was Launched In Place Of Animal Planet And To Combat TLC On MultiChoice's DStv

Real Time is described as a female based lifestyle channel initially offering content from TLC, Animal Planet and Investigation Discovery. Overtime, TLC was gradually phased out from the lineup in favour of Food Network and HGTV.

MultiChoice added Real Time as a replacement to Animal Planet but the problem with its inclusion was that it was being tailored for Easyview package. Basically, they were older seasons to shows including those of Animal Planet it was even worse on the TLC side.

TLC was regarded as the wedding channel and Real Time was what TLC looked like without those shows which included Little People - Big World, Toddlers & Tiaras and Sister Wives. As mentioned, Real Time no longer airs on from TLC it likely had to do with its inclusion.

TLC is available to most DStv subscribers it didn't make much sense to launch a channel to offer their shows half of the time especially since TLC would still rerun shows like Kitchen Boss.

Honestly speaking, I kind of question why Real Time even existed I get some subscribers don't have Investigation Discovery, HGTV or Food Network. But then the latter now takes a chunk of TLC's airtime making Real Time look more competitive than complementary.

On a DStv standpoint, consumers can just downgrade from Compact to Easyview seeing as shows like Guy's Grocery Games and Pool Kings are now on Real Time. Hollywood Demons isn't as prehistoric as most of the shows yet it aired on Real Time.

With its parent company undergoing a split or possible sale, I'd imagine some restructuring or due diligence could be underway. Real Time barely markets any of their content and if you're someone who doesn't have access to the main networks for the shows its challenging.

Real Time could as well have aired the first three seasons of Disappeared and you were waiting and had given up on a fourth season. Then it suddenly airs after a few months or a year but you weren't tuning in because no marketing had been done for you to have known.

This has been going on for sometime and imagine in a couple of years Warner Bros. Discovery or whatever is left of it will probably just close Real Time. As mentioned, TLC has split part of its airtime for Discovery's other cable networks making Real Time redundant.

At the same time, it's likely that we could see more consolidation within the industry perhaps with Discovery Family since it's been leaning heavily on Discovery Channel.

Cartoon Network Will Not Be Airing Iyanu Following It's African Release On Showmax

Adapted from Roye Okupe’s graphic novel series “Iyanu: Child of Wonder,” published by YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics (the powerhouse behind “The Umbrella Academy” and “Hellboy”), the series is helmed by Roye Okupe himself, who was born and raised in Nigeria and now serves as Creator, Executive Producer and Showrunner. The series is produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, a leading Black-owned animation studio in North America.

Drawing on Nigerian culture, music, and mythology, the animated series follows Iyanu, a brave young orphan living in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland. While studying history and ancient arts, she yearns for a normal life—until a looming threat awakens divine powers not seen since the legendary Age of Wonders. Accompanied by newfound friends Biyi, Toye, and a magical leopard named Ekun, Iyanu sets out to uncover the source of this evil, unlocking her destiny along the way.

The entire first season of IYANU was made available across 44 African countries on streaming partner Showmax beginning June 13. Other broadcasters like ITVX will also stream the series across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

The talented all-African IYANU voice cast includes: Serah Johnson as Iyanu; Okey Jude as Biyi, Iyanu’s carefree adventurer friend; Samuel Kugbiyi as Toye, Iyanu’s bookworm companion; Adesua Etomi-Wellington as Olori; Blossom Chukwujekwu as Kanfo, Toye's father; Stella Damasus as Sewa; Shaffy Bello as Emi – The One Mother; and Ike Ononye as Elder Alapani.

The show’s executive producers are David Steward II, Stephanie Sperber, Kirsten Newlands and Matt Heath from Lion Forge Entertainment, Roye Okupe of YouNeek Studios, Erica Dupuis of Impact X Capital, Ryan Haidarian of Forefront Media Group and Doug Schwalbe of Superprod.

Fans of Iyanu are likely waiting for its official rollout on Cartoon Network in Africa and other parts of the world but that won't be the case unfortunately. According to a rep at WBD, the series is not expected to air on Cartoon Network should there be any updates it will be published.

It should be noted that although Warner Bros. Discovery publicised it as an original series it's being helmed at Lion Forge Entertainment. They are currently it's distribution for Cartoon Network and HBO Max but this is only applicable to the US leaving the window open for broadcasters like Showmax.

Showmax being owned by Canal+'s MultiChoice also manage the Africa Magic channels and distribute Play Room in the market making them possible broadcasters for Iyanu. As seen with other African animated series like Twende and Jay Jay The Chosen One.

Cartoon Network International Brings Back New Episodes Of The Wonderfully Weird World Of Gumball In February 2026

Following the phenomenal success of The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball, which scored a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, Cartoon Network Africa is thrilled to announce that brand-new episodes will premiere in February 2026.

Produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, the beloved animated series continues its legacy of comedy and creativity with 20 fresh episodes packed with outrageous humour, heartfelt moments, and features original music numbers that bring Elmore to life like never before.

The upcoming stories dive further into hilariously bizarre family dynamics and schoolyard chaos. From Gumball facing the most difficult bike ride of his life, to Darwin’s rise as a power-hungry witch, expect Gumball and Darwin to tackle everything from awkward promposals to epic party entrances and uncover secrets through a mysterious diary. Anais also takes centre stage, grappling with premature ageing under family stress, while Nicole teams up with Yuki to impress at Career Day, and Richard schemes to cool off during a heatwave.

Beyond the Watterson household, Elmore Junior High becomes a battleground of eccentric challenges, from fighting off an evil guidance counsellor to travelling to the underworld with Carrie. Fans can look forward to spoofs of cult classics, April Fool’s showdowns, and sketch-style episodes exploring the hidden lives of Elmore’s residents.

Record-Breaking Performance

Gumball’s return to Cartoon Network in October was a cultural moment, launching 20 brand-new episodes and reaffirming its status as the #1 kids’ and family IP across the Cartoon Network ecosystem. In 2025, the series smashed records, drawing 54 million viewers on linear and generating over 150 million organic social media views, plus 28 million social engagements in just 10 days. Gumball continues to dominate with 16 billion lifetime views across YouTube on Cartoon Network channels, 1.8 billion of these in 2025 alone, and over 6.5 million interactions on Cartoon Network’s GameOn! experience on Roblox this year. On TV, it was the most-watched show on the channel, and ranked #1 in its premiere slot in markets including the UK, Poland, Spain, and South Africa, #2 in countries including Turkey, Portugal, and Singapore, plus claimed a top four ranking in Japan.

Warner Bros. Discovery, GM, International Kids, Animation and Franchise, Vanessa Brookman says: “It’s an amazing privilege to be able to bring more of this wonderful series to audiences around the world. In a world where kids’ attention is more fragmented than ever, success starts with exceptional content. Gumball’s latest launch proves that when you pair world-class storytelling with a smart, ultra-targeted campaign, you don’t just reach audiences, you spark global conversations and shared experiences. This combination is at the heart of our strategy and why Gumball continues to lead the way in kids’ entertainment.”

Created and executive produced by Ben Bocquelet, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball is a quarter-hour animated comedy series that blends an eclectic mix of media styles, including 2D & 3D animation, CGI, puppetry, photorealism and live action, into a wildly imaginative world defined by its vibrant visual style and sharp meta humour. Matt Layzell and Erik Fountain serve as Executive Producers and Series Directors. The Composer for the series is Xav Clarke, and Joe Sparrow serves as Art Director. The stellar voice cast includes Alkaio Thiele as Gumball, Hero Hunter as Gumball’s younger brother Darwin, Kinza Syed Khan as younger sister Anais, Teresa Gallagher as Gumball’s mother Nicole, and Dan Russell as his father Richard, among many others.

Tyler Perry's Young Dylan Coming Soon To Play Room

Play Room, a South African based children's channel operated by Ngwato Nkosi Group offering a mixture animated and live action will be airing Tyler Perry's Young Dylan in December. This will follow a slate of content launching on the channel including Blippi and Shaq's Garage.

Synopsis for Tyler Perry's Young Dylan

The show centers on Young Dylan (played by real-life rapper Dylan Gilmer), who dreams of becoming a hip-hop superstar. The main storyline begins when his grandmother, Viola, finds herself unable to handle raising him and sends him to live indefinitely with her affluent son, Myles Wilson, and his family in a nice suburban home.

The central conflict and humor come from the immediate and significant culture clash between Young Dylan's "street smart" swagger and the conservative, orderly lifestyle of the Wilson family, which includes his uncle Myles, his aunt Yasmine, and his two cousins, Rebecca and Charlie.

Throughout the series, the family tries to adapt to their new dynamic. Dylan works on his music and often teaches his cousins lessons in "swag" and street smarts, while also learning about family rules and the importance of a stable home environment. More serious themes like class distinctions and child abandonment are addressed with humor.

Tyler Perry's Young Dylan aired on Nickelodeon from February 29, 2020, to April 30, 2025, over five seasons. It serves as the longest running live-action shows of the decade by the network basically tying shows such as Henry Danger which held the record within the 2010s.

It will broadcast daily at 17:00 on Play Room replacing the first slot of Supa Strikas (Zulu).
