Rumours: TLC Will Now Be Handled By WarnerMedia When It Merges With Discovery Inc. To Form Warner Bros. Discovery

Here is what appears to be the rumored full leadership structure of Warner Bros. Discovery:

Warner Bros. Discovery's structure (take with a grain of salt) will focus on a coherent, streamlined structure in order to accelerate the company's direct-to-consumer strategy, with the intent of unleashing the potential of Discovery WarnerMedia's combined holdings.

Under WBD, distribution, commercialisation and licensing operations from Discovery (Discovery Global Enterprises) and WarnerMedia (WB Domestic & International Releasing, WB TV Distribution, WB Home Entertainment, WB Consumer Products, WB Themed Entertainment) will all be centralised under a new organisation known as Warner Bros. Discovery Global Entertainment; the new group will be responsible for the global distribution of programming from WBD's networks, streaming services, and production studios, commercial activities including licensed products and experiences, and the worldwide theatrical exhibition of films produced by WBD's film production labels (Warner Bros. New Line, etc.). The Global Entertainment unit will be led by Tony Gloncaves; he will report directly to WBD CEO David Zaslav.

In terms of the company's leadership, only a handful of WarnerMedia execs will remain post-merger.

Warner Bros. Discovery Streaming will encompass the company's direct-to-consumer platforms, including Discovery+ and HBO Max, and will be responsible for the combination of the two services, and the combined service's global rollout. The streaming unit will be overseen by Andy Forsell.

Warner Bros. Discovery Motion Pictures will comprise the company's film production labels, including Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, Warner Animation Group, DC Studios, among others. The division will be led by Emma Watts, replacing WB Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich; she will report directly to Zaslav. (note: films will now be released under a different label depending on the film, instead of for example, New Line's films being released through Warner Bros. - similar to Disney and Sony releasing films under different labels)

Warner Bros. Discovery Television will comprise the company's entertainment (Discovery, HBO, Turner Networks) and sports (Turner Sports) channels, overseen by Casey Bloys, who will report to Saslav. Among the businesses within WBD Television are:

Discovery Networks will focus on WBD's portfolio of factual and lifestyle television networks, including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Science Channel, Food Network, HGTV, and others. The president of this division will report to Bloys.

HBO Media Group will focus on WBD's vast selection of general entertainment channels, comprising of HBO, Turner Networks (TBS, TNT, TruTV), TLC, and Turner Classic Movies. Content produced on these networks will produced under a singular HBO Media Studios banner. The president of this division will report to Bloys.

Turner Sports will continue to be led by Lenny Daniels, reporting to Bloys; the regional AT&T Sports Networks (now renamed Turner Sports Regional) have now been added to his purfew.

The division will also be responsible for Warner Bros. Television Studios, which will continue to be led by Channing Dugney, as well as The CW network and the Motor Trend Group, WBD's joint venture with Source Interlink.

Warner Bros. Discovery Family & Brands will comprise of content based around WBD-branded content, including the Cartoon Network Group (Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang, Cartoonito), DC, Warner Bros. Games, Otter Media (including Rooster Teeth), and Discovery Golf. The division will continue to be overseen by Tom Ascheim; within WBD F&B, Michael Ouweleen (president of Cartoon Network Group), Jim Lee (CCO of DC), and David Haddad (president of Warner Bros. Games) will all report to Ascheim.

CNN Global will manage CNN and other worldwide news broadcasting assets within WBD, and will be overseen by Chris Licht, who will report directly to Saslav.

Warner Bros. Discovery International will be led by J.B. Perette, serving as an integrated division comprising of the international distribution and operations of Discovery Networks, HBO Media Group, Cartoon Network Group and others, along with local operations such as Eurosport and TVN Group in Poland. This group will be responsible for local execution of all Warner Bros. Discovery linear businesses, and regional programming for the company's streaming services. The division will also be responsible for All3Media - its 50/50 joint venture with Liberty Global, which will integrate the assets of Warner Bros. International TV Production (WBITVP), giving it operations in thirteen more territories.

Additionally, Gunnar Wiedenfels (CFO), Axel Saxena (CTO), Jim Cummings (CHRO), and Jim Meza (EVP, General Counsel) will also report to Zaslav.

Could Televista Be The Next Channel To Go Off Air On MultiChoice's DStv And GOtv Packages?

Televista is a Nigerian based entertainment channel offering English dubbed telenovelas from Spanish speaking markets including Latin America, Colombia and Brazil. The channel also featured news, local dramas and reality shows.

Over the years, Televista had become redundant I remember at one point the channel chose to repeat the batch of content viewers had come across on the station and now the channel opted to repeat shows mainly from Telemundo and Zee World.

Although executives remain quiet on the developments of a brand, I have a hunch on why Televista abandoned most Spanish speaking markets and transitioned to Bollywood programming.

In 2015, AMC International launched a competitive channel to NBCUniversal's Telemundo called EVA. The channel was also home to Spanish based programming in Latin America and expanded to other regions such as Colombia, Mexico and Argentina.

Fast forward to 2020, the channel was packed with mostly repeats as Bold And The Beautiful from CBS was the only thing alive at that point.

To answer on those repeats, most of their suppliers were low on stock while others like Televisa established a presence in Africa with the launch of TLNovelas.

All Televista needed to do was adapt and find new content that consumers would actually follow and not ones you can already find on other stations.

If I had to compare it with their South African counterpart eExtra, I'd say eExtra is doing way better although it's not much outside Turkish dramas there's less DStv repeats.

As some consumers are aware, MultiChoice seems to be involved in a court case with eMedia Investments regarding the carriage agreement for the channels a situation seen in America where suppliers demand pay-tv platforms for more money is now duplicated in South Africa.

History: MultiChoice Bleeding Money On The SABC And eMedia Investments

In 1998, the SABC began to broadcast two TV channels to the rest of Africa: SABC Africa, a news service, and Africa 2 Africa, an entertainment channel to the DStv platform. Few years down the line, the pair were merged only to be subsequently discontinued in 2008.

A year prior, SABC News International launched  alongside a potential pay-tv operator e.Sat TV hoping to take on the likes of Telkom Media, On Digital Media and MultiChoice. Feeling that the market was big enough for two operators the plan was later abolished.

In 2008, it was announced that e.Sat TV would instead work as a channel supplier just like Siyaya TV with Moja Love to MultiChoice's DStv with the eNews Channel known to the current audience as eNCA.

In 2013, the SABC signed a R500 million deal with MultiChoice which would see the launch of the revised SABC News International which was shortened to SABC News accompanied by an entertainment channel, SABC Encore.

In 2017, e.tv's 4 channels at the time were exclusive to Openview with eExtra available on StarSat launched on DStv under eMedia Investments which saw a cut in carriage fees which went from R240 million with just eNCA to R140.8 million with the new additions.

Amidst the pandemic in 2020, you saw MultiChoice making cutbacks in an attempt to streamline which saw the discontinuation of SABC Encore which is rumoured to make a comeback later in 2022 the same time e.tv's 4 channels were reportedly going dark on the pay-tv platform.

In the pandemic, MultiChoice introduced some new methods such as the reduction of DStv Premiership to households carrying the Openview platform which tuned into a duplicate SABC 3 or Sport channel now it's seperate versions of the same channel.

Example: while Openview customers view Bafana Bafana on SABC 1 at 7pm DStv customers are watching DStv Premiership on the same channel.

MultiChoice has expressed on several occasions that they'd never aid SABC as it would be an extra expense to consumer's monthly subscription to DStv but seperate SABC channels says otherwise although the channel is blocked when you miss your payment and some of the content is added to DStv Catch-Up.

The SABC struggles to fill their end of the bargain with SuperSport so although no money is coming to them with DStv outside of SABC News and advertising. The chances of them getting discounted sports doesn't seem far fetched and the rate could have gone up with the feed separations.

e.tv was likely making money from their African feed known as eAfrica or eGhana and now eMedia Investments is taking the pay-tv platform to court regarding the carriage agreement for their 4 channels in South Africa.

Roundups #34: eReality Becomes A Sports Channel, Akissi Launches This May On Boomerang Africa And WWE Channel Currently Has An Open Window On DStv

eReality is making some moves

eMedia Investments discontinued News And Sport and Rewind from the Openview platform later this week and questions arouse on the fate of some content seen on these stations particularly News And Sport which is home to Impact's library.

Through an updated schedule, it has been confirmed that sports will now be available to eReality as Saturday afternoons are dedicated to sports.

The new Xposed channels seems to be incorporating a bit of Rewind as High Society Scandal, 48 Hours and Hawaii Five-O can be viewed on the station.

Akissi coming to Boomerang

In 2021, France Télévisions and WarnerMedia were co-financing an animated special based on publishing property Akissi, which centres on a mischievous girl growing up in Ivory Coast.

The 1×26' special was produced by French animation studio Ellipsanime while African Animation Network had international dubbing rights.

Akissi is expected to air next month on Boomerang.

WWE Channel available to DStv Access customers outside South Africa

MultiChoice Africa recently launched a brand new Ethiopian sports channel for consumers outside of South Africa and currently opened the WWE Channel to all DStv Access customers until April 4th.

Several Access customers in South Africa complained about the lack of sports seen on the platform while consumers on Openview get EPL, La Liga with Access customers in other markets awarded a football channel and for a limited time WWE.
