March 2021 On EVA and EVA+ | Repeats: Into The Unknown

Yep, this will be the third and probably last month for both channels with Bold being the only stable program on EVA. I know the past two months were about EVA but this is where things seemingly get interesting.

Usually these brands like to promote their repeats but this time that's not the case. The shows have end dates but no placeholder has been advertised.

On EVA+, you have Por Amarte Asi (Loving You) reaching its climax on the 12th of this month and the channel fails to reveal what program takes its place. What that implies is that perhaps one of their current repeats will get extra slots added.

Remember FOX Life, where the channel ended up giving their telenovelas (Rode To Destiny and Along Came Love) double bills timeslot with the only remaining telenovela (Shadows From The Past) getting a triple bill before the channel's departure.

Do you think the same is happening with EVA+?

Another show reaching its climax is Mujercitas (Little Women) but that will only occur on April 13th.

On EVA, everything seems to be running as normal as usual none of the content have end dates quite as yet.

So here's a couple of theories that could occur after March and April:

1.1. EVA+ shuts down and viewers get redirected to EVA therefore moving it to DStv Access and in some countries GOtv. Perhaps MultiChoice even AMC International decided to keep one channel kind of like how there was 2 BET channels and MultiChoice decided to go back to one channel.

1.2. Whatever happened in 1.1. except viewers might not get EVA as it's shutting down at a later stage.

2. Both channels shut down together

3. They're adding new content which I highly doubt why take a year to reload your stock and still let consumers into your shop.

4. They're getting a makeover, the current look is not for me but it fits with the representation of Spanish culture.

5. Absolutely nothing

Both channels are available on DStv and GOtv.

The Owners Of The Long Forgotten Bay TV Officially Acknowledge The Name Change To Mpuma Kapa TV

It's weird how they officially acknowledged the name change this month when the rebrand occurred mid 2020 and I personally told MultiChoice about it and their websites updated it last year as well.

Here's the press release:

Bay TV, Channel 260 on DStv is changing to a new name and launching their new brand of Mpuma Kapa TV. The only television broadcasting channel in the Eastern Cape has been on our TV screens since 2011 and has over 1.8 million viewers. The channel was established in the Nelson Mandela Bay, as an independent community station.

The vision has always been to be recognised as a platform for the Eastern Cape to share and capture its stories, while grooming new talent from the province to the media industry. The channel is an entertainment all-rounder that presents viewers with countless entertainment, current affairs, news, sports and religious content.

The rebranding is an exciting new journey for the channel and aims to bring viewers bigger, better, more entertaining and extremely inclusive content.

Samkelo Dlulane, Mpuma Kapa TV board member, shares more.

Bay TV has been around since 2011. Can you share with us how it started?
There was a need to open up the Eastern Cape to the television broadcasting industry, there a were so many young people moving to Johannesburg to be part of the industry, however there were some who did not have that opportunity or had no means to chase the TV dream.

I think the start of Bay TV was to say, there is no need for our people in the Eastern Cape to leave the province, rather Bay TV was started to give them the opportunity to be on TV and to learn about the full value chain of television broadcasting and production industry. Today, when you look at many of the major production companies and broadcasters, they have a huge pool of Bay TV alumni - whether on screen or behind.

After all these years, the station has rebranded to Mpuma Kapa TV. Could you share the reasoning rebrand and name change?
Bay TV has always been seen as a Nelson Mandela Bay TV channel even though it was meant to represent the whole of the Eastern Cape. Our rebranding was due to the board of directors seeing the need to rectify this. Therefore, the channel renaming and rebranding to Mpuma Kapa TV was to ensure that the whole of the Eastern Cape could claim the channel as their own, further ensuring that advertisers also understand that the channel speaks to the whole province and not focused on the Nelson Mandela Bay.
The channel has grown and continues to grow, with its head office in Nelson Mandela Bay and with another office in East London, with plans to expand to OR Tambo region and Chris Hani region to ensure that the whole province is able to access the channel and further for the channel to cover news and stories in all the EC regions.

Mpuma Kapa means Eastern Cape and that is why we have used this name, to have a direct meaning to the province. As an independent community station, how is the station funded?
Mpuma Kapa TV makes most of its money from advertising. MultiChoice provides grants to community media on their platform. However, that is not enough to run an operation like Mpuma Kapa TV. We have a government who buys ad space and have started attracting private sector, through media buying agencies. As we have a big Eastern Cape market as we speak directly to them.

What can audiences expect? Will there be new shows? More entertainment?
We are excited to announce new content, new faces and also new ways of broadcasting. The channel has introduced a live-streaming services to its offerings. It is working on new documentaries and also new exciting shows. We have travel, entertainment, sports, current affairs and religious shows. Some of our old shows are getting a facelift and new names, as they were named for Bay TV, and now they will be representing our new brand.

As a community station, how can locals get involved?
Mpuma Kapa TV has given our local content producers and opportunity to use the channel as a platform for their productions, further 90% of all our content is from the EC and by the EC community. The channel sees its self as a training ground and is always open to take young people who would like to get training and experience in the industry.

Further we assist writers and people with concepts to develop them, and we assist in ensuring that we help bring the ideas to life. Mpuma Kapa TV will continue to ensure that it grooms industry ready individuals for the industry.

Hopefully a revamp or rebrand is underway for GauTV (News channel) and Tshwane TV (Prophets channel). In the end almost all community channels kind of lost the little value they had left so that section is abandoned or deserted at this point.

Predictions: What To Expect On OpenView+?

eMedia Investments was originally scheduled to launch a dishless version of their current OpenView decoder back in 2019 but got delayed for unknown reasons.

Later in February, their media pages have been promoting some new WiFi software they've installed on the latest model of their decoders and asked fans to guess the reason.

If you look at the term, Wi-fi it consists of a group of networks giving you internet access or better yet local networking.

With that in mind, it means they'll finally be launching their long awaited dishless version of their decoder, OpenView+.

As usual, no details about the platform have been confirmed during this time. Since its based on their decoder I got a couple of theories on what will transpire as it rolls out.

1. It will include ads perhaps viewers will have to pay to exclude them.

2. It will consist of current (possibly revamped) offering found on your decoder alongside some exclusive content which rolls out weekly. Will SABC form part of this offering we'll have to wait and see

Reason being Telkom paid SABC for their set of channels including 1, 2 & 3.

3. It will have a section similar to DStv Catch Up or e on Demand this time you get to view programs from Star Life and Glow TV. There's chances that you won't be able to stream content from SABC in that section should SABC 1-3 be available at launch.

4. Additional radio channels specifically online stations will be added.

5. Record feature

From what sources told me it will be rolling out in March. It will be interesting to see how OpenView plans to streamline their offering particularly on the eMedia set of channels.

WarnerMedia Plans For Cartoon Network And The Rest Of Its Brands

Tom Ascheim, president for kids, young adults and classic at WarnerMedia was interviewed recently about the state of Cartoon Network and plans for the brand.

Apparently, he wants to expand Cartoon Network's existing portfolio to include family, preschoolers and girls some of these will have names. We Baby Bears is rumoured to be the brand's first original preschool series then there's several other shows which are tagged with HBO Max under family.

This is not the first time Cartoon Network tried to cater for preschoolers remember the Cartoonito block on Boomerang now it has a 24/7 channel with no new original content in few markets so maybe they'll rename it.

This format is something they plan to duplicate in other countries without shutting down any channels since they're performing well and the viewership grew thanks to Disney shuttering several channels internationally.

Perhaps Cartoon Network internationally will reposition their channels like Disney Channel and try to be a brand without preschool shows. The longest I've watched Cartoon Network the content has always made an impression on boys even when even shows like The Powerpuff Girls (original) was still on.

Just like Disney Channel which has most  programming catered for girls even after the demise of Disney XD I'm not expecting anything different from Cartoon Network after this change.

At the same time if there is original content under preschool (even family) you have to wonder how this won't affect a brand like Boomerang and how they plan to get it on Cartoon Network.

The timeslots are also in question from what I remember preschool shows get early timeslots were viewers tune in and if this is connected to streaming there's chances it will survive and if this part is latched onto the international counterpart of Boomerang expect success.

This change is not entirely bad as Cartoon Network became a Teen Titans GO! channel and the shows viewers actually want to see get less airtime or put in very bad timeslots.

Islands can be home to the most extreme examples of life, as nature evolves in the most dramatic way. Sometimes isolated for hundreds of thousands of years, pockets of individuals adapt to survive, fueling a rapid and continuous development of new species.
Some of the Zanzibar archipelago’s bizarre creatures have developed to an enormous size. The world’s largest crab scales trees in search of coconuts, and clouds of giant bats fill the skies at dusk. Under the cover of darkness, giant leatherback turtles visit Trinidad’s beaches to lay their eggs. Dominica’s volcanic heritage gives it fertile soils, making the island rich in flowering plants. Situated 1,000km west of Ecuador, the Galapagos archipelago has been so little exposed to humans, it allowed Charles Darwin to study and rethink the laws of nature.
