Sky Deutschland Drops 3 TV Channels As More Consumers Opt To Streaming

German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland is removing three channels from its TV line-up.

At the end of June 2023, Curiosity Channel (formerly Spiegel TV Wissen) and Spiegel Geschichte will be dropped, a Sky spokesperson confirmed to German industry magazine Digital Fernsehen.

Curiosity Channel is currently viewable on MultiChoice's DStv across Africa initially used as collateral for A+E Networks 3 brands at the time Lifetime, History and Crime + Investigation. The channel was founded by former founder of Discovery Channel, John S. Hendricks.

Another channel set to be axed before the end of 2023 is operated by Sky Deutschland, Sky Comedy. Although a Sky Comedy isn't offered in Africa the channel bares a resemblance to Paramount Global's Comedy Central also seen on DStv alongside StarTimes (not SA).

The reason: Media usage is moving strongly towards video-on-demand, said the spokesperson, adding that: “Sky doesn’t need a linear comedy channel.”

Over the years, MultiChoice has sorted to such measure which the reduction of M-Net Movies alongside the axing of M-Net City, VUZU, BBC First and ITV Choice with The Walt Disney Company anticipated to rip out more channels as seen with FOX and Disney XD years prior.

Even the BBC is planning to become an online only brand within the next decade. Since then a revised BBC News channel launched globally and also content spend was cut on BBC Brit, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies and BBC Earth with some content streaming exclusively on BritBox.

CuriosityStream Boasts Sub Growth Via International Distribution

CuriosityStream in the first quarter saw progress in its direct-to-consumer business, bolstered by new distribution agreements with international launch partners.

As with its Q4 2022 earnings, Curiosity didn’t reveal its total paid subscriber count (in Q3 it reported total subs dropped to 23 million). But CEO Clint Stinchcomb said on an earnings call the company added “several million paying subscribers” through bundled distribution partnerships across five continents.

New launch partners include Amazon’s Prime Video Channels in India, Mexico’s Izzi Telecom, Fetch TV in Australia, and Ziggo, the largest MVPD in The Netherlands, among others.

Curiosity didn’t go into too much detail about the individual agreements, but Stinchcomb noted these distribution deals are typically multi-year agreements with a fixed fee.

“We expect meaningful improvement in our revenues from distribution partners moving forward as our full product set – from localized channels to integrated app offerings to direct licensing – creates a range of monetization paths for both us and our partners as we connect with audiences across the globe,” said Stinchcomb.

Curiosity also has a free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channel – Curiosity Now – that launched last spring with LG as its initial distribution partner. Stinchcomb said the company has “dipped [its] toe” in the FAST space and eventually intends to launch Curiosity Now internationally.

Housemates launching: Keynote Speech by Amb. Anthony Navo, CEO AYV Media Empire

I was inspired to establish Africa Young Voices Media Empire (AYV) because of the many raw and great talents I saw in Sierra Leone in journalism and entertainment who needed a platform to showcase their talents to the World.

This Housemates Salone Reality Show is also a result of that same vision. I'm happy that today we are celebrating Season 3, with the show set to be shown live on DSTV Channel 399. This is the first Sierra Leone reality t v Show that will be shown to millions across the World through our new partnership with DSTV. It now means a bigger platform for our entertainers to attract bigger opportunities.

Finally, I want to thank the entire team AYV, Africell, our partners, and all Sierra Leoneans who have been with me on this journey since we began. I'm proud that every year, the show continues to get more bigger, interesting, and appreciated by the public. Let us all continue to do our best to rebrand Sierra Leone through entertainment. I thank you all. And good luck to all intending participants.
