New Channel Alert (Rumour): Zambezi Magic To Rollout A Second TV Channel On The DStv And Possible GOtv Platform

Zambezi Magic is a general entertainment channel based in Southern Africa which is operated by M-Net and MultiChoice. It caters for audiences in Botswana, Malawi, Lesotho, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe (excluding South Africa) with shows like Mpali and Zuba.

During the week, the pay-tv operator had begun work on a duplicate channel to Zambezi Magic what caught our eyes was how they opted to add the drama Kopala to the lineup considering it dates back to a few months while a show like Mpali can go as far as 6 years.

If we had to guess, this new channel similar to Mzansi Wethu, Maisha Magic POA, Magic Showcase and kykNET Lekker will cater toward consumers who haven't been able to view the above-mentioned shows seen Zambezi Magic's inception to these markets in 2015.

While Zambezi Magic is sitting on channel 162, it wouldn't come as a surprise if this duplicate occupied channel 165 seeing as it is the secondary channel and also the fact that other channel numbers have been filled.

The only question at this point would be whether M-Net and MultiChoice would look into possibly adding Zambezi Magic+ to South Africa. Seeing as they ripped Zuba away from Access customers on Novela Magic and also the fact that they blocked Zambezi Magic from the region.

How Play Room Could Pan Out In The Rest Of Africa On DStv And Possible GOtv?

During the week, it was reported by sources that Ngwato Nkosi Group and MultiChoice will unveil their third TV channel to consumers, Play Room. A KTV and Akili Kids infused channel featuring educational and entertaining content some of which will be in local languages.

From what is understood, it's currently unknown if Play Room will be available in the rest of Africa at the same time as South Africa. Similar to sister channel, Newzroom Afrika it was first launched in South Africa before rolling out in the rest of Africa.

Movie Room on the other operate with two independent feeds one seen in Southern Africa and another for other African markets.

If anything, Play Room could undergo a similar scenario seen with their other sister brands. It could first establish its presence in South Africa or rollout across Africa at the same time and in a similar form to Movie Room I mean the idea of housing seperate feeds wouldn't seem far fetched.

It was very much confirmed that popular animated titles like CoComelon and Akili And Me would be dubbed in Zulu. A language that some parts of Africa aren't familiar with so if anything it wouldn't be shocking if there wasn't any local push initially in these countries.

Countries like East Africa already supply their own Play Room brand, Akili Kids. That is likely to get phased out should MultiChoice put any local investment toward Play Room.

I mean the scenario in each country is different but in recent years MultiChoice has been doing a lot of quality control. Not that Akili Kids is not performing to its potential but there's just so much of a resemblance to Play Room that MultiChoice may want to limit that offering.

Another having to do with transponder constraints, a lot of people following up on the matter are expecting more channels to close as the pay-tv company unveils new attractions.

Reminder: ROK GH Will Close On DStv And GOtv Across Africa By 31 August 2023

ROK is a general entertainment channel operated by Nigerian film company ROK Studios that produce a selection of content such as Bloodline and Festac Town. Prior to the channel's inception, the company ROK Studios had been garnering popularity for its productions.

By 2018, ROK Studios allocated two more channels to the DStv platform, ROK 2 and ROK 3 (now ROK GH). ROK 2 was viewed as another Mzansi Wethu rehashing content to more consumers while as ROK GH (formerly ROK 3) was spun off from the first producing content from Ghana.

After 5 years on air, MultiChoice has decided to end carriage of ROK GH with further content likely to be distributed on ROK and ROK 2. This comes after it was reported that Maisha Magic Movies would be departing South Africa both of which are slated to go dark by the end of August.

MultiChoice has yet to issue out a statement regarding the cancellation of ROK GH. But if we had to guess similar to Maisha Magic Movies (in SA) and Novela Magic, the channel was struggling to garner traction and brands like ROK and Africa Magic probably edged them out.

Another could be that ROK Studios (if not MultiChoice) is cutting back on content spend and possible streamlining. Therefore reducing the attention seen on their linear platforms as seen with various broadcasters in the African market underwent.

Development Alert: Estação Do Boss To Be Made Available On DStv And GOtv Mozambique's Newest Addition, Maningue Magic Kool

During the month, MultiChoice unveiled Maningue Magic Kool of course details about the content were underwraps. After a few weeks, the pay-tv company unveiled the first show for the reported upcoming for consumers in Mozambique, Estação Do Boss.

Estação Do Boss (Boss Station) is an entertainment program, with a greater focus on music videos, by the irreverent and international television presenter Emerson Miranda. It features behind the scenes of some video clips, interviews from singers.

This series is currently seen on Maningue Magic which confirms my suspicions from weeks back. MultiChoice decided to ramp up yet another BBC UKTV or better yet Magic Showcase to consumers in the region probably another way

As they currently list it under the GOtv Essentials (channel 3) and DStv Base packages (channel 505) which serves as the cheaper tiers within the market. This channel similar to various regionalized M-Net channels appear to be applicable to consumers in the region.

The channel is expected to rollout in the coming weeks.

In other developments, MultiChoice is rumoured to be adding a third kids brand from Warner Bros. Discovery, Boing. Similar to Maningue Magic Kool, the channel was listed under an existing tile before being officially announced by the respective party.

New Channel Alert: MultiChoice To Rollout Maningue Kool On The DStv And GOtv Platform

In 2022, MultiChoice added two Portuguese-language TV channels: Maningue Magic in Mozambique and Kwenda Magic in Angola - for DStv and GOtv subscribers. It features dramas, telenovelas, reality shows, comedies, music and original content.

After a year or few months, MultiChoice is looking to expand the number of Portuguese/local channels within the market with the launch of Maningue Kool.

Maningue Kool serves as a spin-off to the current Maningue Magic and is also the sister channel to various regional brands by M-Net which too have gotten spun off including Pearl Magic, Maisha Magic, KykNET, Mzansi Magic and Africa Magic.

Not much details is known about the content but considering MultiChoice's recent batch of local channels, Magic Showcase and CineMagic. It wouldn't be shocking if this served as somewhat of a repeat channel to the current Kwenda and Maningue Magic if not original.

Amidst the launch of Maningue Magic and Kwenda Magic, MultiChoice's head for these channels had expressed interest in giving consumers in these regions a platform for their talent and Maningue Kool could as well be part of those endeavours.

Maningue Kool is expected to launch on DStv channel 505 and GOtv channel 3.

Development Alert (Rumour): CineMagic To Get A Duplicate Channel On The DStv Platform

During the month, Novela Magic was ripped away from more consumers across Africa with consumers wondering why they're paying more money if they're getting less channels and this comes almost 4 months after its exit from the South African market.

As seen in selected territories, MultiChoice allocated the general entertainment channel Magic Showcase and film channel CineMagic to low tiered consumers who weren't able to access or view the local content seen on M-Net and Mzansi Wethu.

In short, MultiChoice is done adding channels like Discovery Family or at least to top tier consumers who could already view the shows on Discovery Channel, Food Network, Investigation Discovery and HGTV.

As seen for the past couple of weeks, MultiChoice might be from what appears to be rolling out a duplicate CineMagic of course details on it's capacity remains very much a mystery.

From what is seen on the duplicate very similar to CineMagic is Trevor Noah: Nationwild, The Kandasamyms: Wedding, Stand Up Africa 2016 basically repeats of content already viewed across M-Net platforms and also an alternate lineup from the original.

There's chances that this may be a seperate feed the pay-tv platform wants to introduce to selected territories as the schedule looks somewhat drafted as most of the films that appear when this test card was put up appear in its post production stage.

With that in mind, maybe this is MultiChoice's way of making up for Novela Magic in the affected regions but as seen in regions where the channel already exists only selected consumers particularly those without M-Net or any of the Magic channels can view them.

NOT SHOCKING!!! Novela Magic Stops Airing Across Africa From 18 April On DStv And GOtv

Novela Magic was a Pan-African telenovela channel operated by M-Net similar to Mzansi Wethu and kykNET Lekker would supply content already viewed on DStv. But unlike the latter, the channel was used to make some of this content accessible to more countries.

Since November 2022, MultiChoice grew quite distanced from Novela Magic so much so that they launched two replacement channels, Magic Showcase and CineMagic and at the same time opted to make these channels accessible to only Easyview customers.

The reason for that has to do with repeats for which the pay-tv company had been trying to hide/limit from certain DStv customers with the rollout of BBC UKTV, Moja 9.9., Pearl Magic POA and the already mentioned Magic Showcase and CineMagic.

It only seemed logical for Novela Magic to go dark in South Africa before anywhere else as most of the content had already been viewed in the region compared to the rest of Africa where Suidooster, Isibaya and The Throne haven't been viewed by a lot of consumers.

After 6 months, more regions confirmed the demise of Novela Magic with the channel set to go dark from April 18 likely for similar reasons as seen in South Africa - repeats. On which the pay-tv platform as mentioned had been limiting accessibility.

Novela Magic seemed promising it didn't look like something that MultiChoice was quickly going to forget about after 3 years. But the problem with the channel had to do with positioning as it was made to look like the Mzansi Wethu of Mzansi Magic.

Novela Magic could have been more nostalgic explore shows that have been abandoned or long forgotten by Mzansi Magic, M-Net and kykNET if the idea was never to rollout fresh content but instead they'd rather use the brand as some type of catch-up channel.

As of the moment, the channel is currently on autopilot and being marketed as the Suidooster and Brotherhood Brethren channel.

More sports entertainment awaiting these consumers

More viewers on DStv will be able to enjoy the return of the Formula 1 World Championship, with SuperSport opening the Motorsport channel to DStv Compact Plus subscribers for the first three races of the 2023 season. SuperSport is definitely your #HomeOfSport and the ultimate destination for motorsport fans.

Stay connected or upgrade to DStv Compact Plus and not long ago Compact to take in Pre-Season Testing late in February, followed by the first three races of the 2023 season, running from early March to early April and taking in stops in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

The 2022 F1 season saw Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominate proceedings, with the Dutchman claiming his second successive drivers’ championship. He won a record 15 races through the course of the year, though he insists that he is not thinking about the chance to become just the fifth driver to win three successive titles, alongside Juan Manuel Fangio, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.

More channels go black on your platforms

For several days, consumers on the platform had noticed that SoundCity (channel 327) and Spice TV (channel 190) alongside Televista (channel 194), Trybe TV (channel 195) and Onmax (channel 257) went dark in the previous month.

According to the information provided, the channels in question all of which are owned by Consolidated Media Associates Limited are currently experiencing technical difficulties with no details as to the duration of the matter.

M-Net to relaunch former brand

In September 2020, M-Net decided to restructure their M-Net Movies channels by further reducing them from 6 to just 4 channels. Currently priced at R79p/m, the offering also consists of pop-up channels from M-Net Movies and 2 Bollywood movie channels.

As seen this past week, MultiChoice has conducted tests on M-Net Movies' first pop-up channel in 2023, M-Net Movies Action HQ which is expected to rollout later in the coming weeks.

M-Net Movies Action HQ appears to be M-Net and MultiChoice's way of bringing back the M-Net Movies Action brand name which was the second longest running brand behind All-Stars and also most popular amongst consumers before their termination.

Some of the content expected for the channel in the coming weeks includes Mercury Rising, Greenland, Fast And The Furious 9 and Hunter's Killer.

Recap To The Past And Present: Is TNT Africa The Next Channel To Exit The African Market On DStv, GOtv And StarSat??? As Warner Bros. Discovery Appears To Be Repositioning The Brand

During the week, Warner Bros. Discovery announced the introduction of TNT Sports in the UK basically their outlet to premium based sports. There is Premier League, WWE, Olympic Games, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and Premiership Rugby.

In an interview it was outlined that TNT Sports fits into their focus on running a global business. The channel has already established its presence in Latin America and since 2023 the main TNT channel in the U.S. had bolstered it's offering following the bloodshed of original programming.

TNT comes in the form of a movie brand in the African market pulling close to 10 million households following the addition of TNT Hits featuring blockbusters like Venom, Suicide Squad and Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. It is also home to All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

Since 2021, Warner Bros. Discovery has been using an intermediary brand Warner TV for most if not all their content in parts of Europe with questions about a potential duplication in the African market remaining as quo in the time of these events.

Prior to the rollout of TNT Sports, Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled the Cartoonito Channel for the African market and through a virtual presentation it was confirmed that the decision to convert the channel had partially to do with the developments in other territories.

Warner Bros. Discovery:
Boomerang to exit the African market from next month
Prediction: DMAX launches as a free-to-air channel in the African market
Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney spending more on original content

Before we even got official word on Cartoonito, Warner Bros. Discovery remained silent on further attractions for Boomerang and even converted several shows from the brand to Cartoonito and shifted it's schedule on a monthly basis.

As for TNT, Warner Bros. Discovery has shared several details about upcoming attractions for the second quarter of 2023 for all their brands ranging from Discovery Channel to Cartoonito but for some reason TNT is the only channel they have yet to release.

TNT has been performing well in the region and after attending that virtual event Warner Bros. Discovery seems more committed in keeping these channels open for fans as opposed to The Walt Disney Company's plans to end the lifespan of their brands.

Sports Entertainment:
Could the rumoured SuperSport Schools replace another DStv channel?
SuperSport Schools coming soon to DStv
What you need to know about the NFL Superbowl 2023?

Warner TV has been getting a lot of attention across their platforms in other countries and if this happens to be the name they opt for the channel. It will be very much different to the versions seen in other countries as Warner has deals put in place for their content.

SHOCKER (MAYBE NOT)!!! Da Vinci Kids Is The Next Channel To Exit The DStv And Likely GOtv Platform Across Africa

From October 15th, MultiChoice will be breaking hearts of several children and family members as Da Vinci Kids is scheduled to exit their platforms after 3 years with the pay-tv operator failing to communicate with the media beforehand about the changes.

Da Vinci Kids was added in 2019 on the DStv platform in the midst of a carriage feud with A+E Networks for Lifetime and History with CuriosityStream (now Curiosity Channel) and CBS Justice added in the midst of that dispute.

The channel was once available on the Openview platform and was much repetitive but thanks to its acquisition in 2020. Da Vinci Kids managed to be an elite with shows like Odd Squad, Animal Rescue, Xploration DIY SCI, Bajillionaires and Detention Adventures.

Unfortunately all of that wasn't enough to retain the channel on their platforms as some sources mention that the channel didn't fit into their 5 year content strategy whatever that is but it's closure brings the total number of terminations on the platform to 9.

Last month, they unveiled a new preschool channel Moonbug Kids home to shows viewable on Cartoon Network and Boomerang like Supa Strikas and CoComelon alongside other content like Oddbods, Mia's Playground and Gecko's Garage.

I guess my hunch was right Moonbug Kids was coming to kill but I'm sure no one expected it to be Da Vinci Kids perhaps JimJam as the content seems out of style while others are duplicated on DreamWorks Channel and CBeebies.

Over whether MultiChoice will use channel 318 for anything similar to Da Vinci Kids that remains very much a mystery I mean there's a couple of channels I'd recommend BBC Kids or Kartoon Channel but as of right now you can view the channel on StarSat or through the app.

CBS Justice May Not Be The Only Channel Out For The Count On DStv Even These Two Channels Are Likely To Get Chopped Across Africa

During the past week, I shared my suggestions on CBS Justice as AMC International review their offering across various regions which has led to the reduction or discontinuation of several channels. As seen in these regions, these changes include several other brands namely CBS Reality and JimJam.

CBS Reality is a factual entertainment channel home to various unscripted content like Judge Judy, Cheaters, Animal Hoarding, Hardcore Pawn and Women On The Force and as seen in other regions crime shows like Forensic Files, Killer Siblings and The Real Prime Suspect.

The longest I've watched this channel practically anything with the CBS brand you notice the repetitive nature and I know this is common in most markets but the channel is funneled with too much old programming which is often the reason a channel's lifespan is cut short.

JimJam seems to be lurking in the shadows of these two as the preschool brand has seen themselves get a variety of content which date back to 4-8 years. Some notable series include Thomas And Friends, Guess With Jess, Olivia and Noddy In Toyland.

All of which can be viewed on DreamWorks Channel and CBeebies.

Although there hasn't been much confirmation about CBS Reality's future. There is a lot of signs pointing toward the phasing out of the brand as seen in Poland and the UK in which the current offering tries to limit any mention of CBS.

JimJam's availability has seen declines on various cable providers across the world not that it isn't available in many homes but when various platforms similar to DStv internationally pull the rug from down under then you know something is up.

Could MultiChoice Keep e.tv's 4 Channels On DStv And Restore e.tv Africa?

MultiChoice ripped away e.tv from neighbouring countries leading more consumers to pirate the bulk of content with an Openview or eVOD to watch the bulk of content available on the channel while South African consumers will only lose the channels by the end of May.

eMedia Investments engaged with the Competition Tribunal regarding their agreement with MultiChoice for these channels. As some consumers have noticed, some of their channels have been performing remarkably well even on bouquets like Premium and Compact.

Money wouldn't have been the root of their misery if MultiChoice learnt to play the cards right. According to several reports, before they could bundle more channels eMedia Investments was making close to half a billion which was reduced following the additions of these channels.

Another incident involves eNCA and the defunct Afro Worldview, eNCA is the most watched news channel yet Afro Worldview made more than them. When interrogating MultiChoice, they only responded to say that they have less news bulletins.

So you can literally see where all this anger is coming toward, eMedia hopes to see their continue on DStv and for MultiChoice to agree with their demands.

MultiChoice seems more affirmed with their decision to scrap the channels as they've sourced out several new channels which can be viewed as replacements in South Africa such as DreamWorks bulking a lot of eToonz and the upcoming movie channel.

The initial plan was to scrap 4 channels and leave 1 channel on each package: KIX (DStv Access and Family), PBS Kids (DStv Easyview) and DreamWorks (DStv Premium, Compact+ and Compact). As mentioned, MultiChoice intends to launch another movie channel.

The movie space on DStv has been overcrowded on the basis of American films for which MultiChoice is trying to reduce considering how repetitive the offering can be. If anything, the channels that have a better shot on DStv would be eExtra and eToonz.

I get eToonz has a duplicate but the channel's world doesn't revolve on DreamWorks as there's other content like Power Rangers, Pokemon and Ninjago and the recent live-action series. On top of that, MultiChoice won't be using most of the channel numbers in the kiddies section anytime soon.

Akilli Kids exists in East Africa on eToonz channel number while Ghana Learning and Edu TV occupy channels 315 & 316.

For eExtra, it's not entirely about the programming but the same issue as eToonz - channel number. Some parts of Africa have channel 195 with the relevant one Televista being the equivalent of the channel in those regions.

For the rest of Africa, e.tv was spotted in i-Plate section and I don't want to rush into conclusions but there's been cases where MultiChoice cancels a channel and yet comes with a complete schedule in that area usually because it exists elsewhere.

To be honest, I kind of thought the channel was done for in Africa as the SABC once supplied a handful of channels in neighbouring countries through an agreement with MultiChoice before it got scrapped and if this channel were to return then I guess miracles do exist but it remaining exclusive to South Africa is not far fetched.

eMedia Investments battle with MultiChoice is set to reach its climax next month. As mentioned, eExtra and eToonz do seem like the ideal channels to remain onboard but I'd hope to see eMovies onboard on top of the offering it's also floating in the same boat as the other two in channel numbers.

Ramadaan TV will open on Friday, 1 April likely to coincide with the event on Saturday, 2 April and close during the first week of May which happens to be the same period the whole event ends.

The channel might be available on all DStv and GOtv as details of the package have yet to be confirmed but it will go live on channel 346.

Similarly available on the Ramadan channel are the daily call to prayers, docuseries, cooking shows and programmes on the conduct and obligations of Muslims during Ramadan.

Reminder: e.tv's African Feed To Cease Transmission On DStv And GOtv

(You can now share on Facebook)

Earlier in the month, it was reported that e.tv's additional channels will cease transmission on DStv and MultiChoice will open up a few existing channels to their customers while as launching DreamWorks.

From April 1st, the only channels present from eMedia Investments would be e.tv and eNCA while eNuus continues offering their news bulletin on kykNET well that's not entirely true or at least for the rest of Africa that is.

MultiChoice Africa plans to scrap e.tv (also known to viewers as eAfrica or eGhana) from their DStv and GOtv packages by the end of month leaving only the news portion of eMedia Investments as they sought out other entertainment.

Basically, eMedia Investments theory about their partnership with MultiChoice for e.tv blew up in their faces or at least for the rest of Africa. Of course both parties had an alternative motive but with Netflix you can see where MultiChoice's heart lies.

According to Limpopo TV, MultiChoice has a new business plan and although not much details are available aside from the no community channel policy. The idea of e.tv alongside other e.tv channels forming part of this plan doesn't seem far fetched.

Since the pandemic, MultiChoice had been chopping several channels such as BBC First, ITV Choice, M-Net City and VUZU in their attempts to streamline and launched several originals like HONEY, Maisha Magic Movies and WildEarth.

These eChannels lacked originality and some of the content which may not be found on DStv is licensed by other networks take for instance eToonz with DreamWorks and eExtra with Timeless Dizi Channel and Zee World.

MultiChoice Africa Announce Fresh New Kids Shows For 2021

MultiChoice have announced new shows for the young and young at heart. With a new show of programs set to premier each month for the kids.

The announcement was made during their 2021 Content Showcase where the company announced a line-up of upcoming content for its customers throughout the year.

The kids’ segment is an important one for us as they are part of our most loyal and demanding customers. With over 15 kids’ channels on our platforms, we strive to ensure that we keep the line-up fresh and exciting. The variety of educational and informative content available on DStv 24 hours a day is bound to handpicked to keep the young ones glued to their screens.

Teen Africa TV Is Set For Takeoff

Excitement is in the air amongst the teens in Nigeria, as the date for the launch of Africa’s First Indigenous Teen Channel draws near. On December 1st 2019 at the Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, the most anticipated teen channel known as Teen Africa TV, a brainchild of Charles Novia who’s the Founder/CEO, launches with a bang.
According to Charles Novia, ‘Teen Africa TV is presently the biggest indigenous visual ecosystem for Teenagers in this part of the world. We speak the language of the Teens and we understand what they want. Our programmes are borne from research by them and all our original programmes have teens and young adults as presenters. We have given them their own world and there is nothing like this.

The TATV presenters and brand ambassadors are some of the best teen talents in the country and we are very proud of them. We have assembled the next breakout youth talents who will take over the entertainment scene in Africa and the world in a few years and TATV is the natural springboard for these talents to ‘blow’.

After the launch, Teen Africa TV will be on DSTV and Gotv as a 24 hour daily channel with the best original content for the teens and family audience.
