PBS Kids To Unveil New Logo

PBS KIDS, the #1 educational media brand for children, announced a comprehensive update to its logo for the first time in two decades. The new logo, set to debut on July 19, builds on an expanded graphics package that began rolling out last year, which features a bright updated color palette and an array of people and environments. The refreshed look is designed to build on the equity and strength of the PBS KIDS brand and optimized for today’s digitally-focused kids and families.

Audiences will see a new text-focused logo dominated by bright, fun colors, large bold lettering and clear visuals. With feedback from parents, kids, and experts in the field, the logo’s use of PBS KIDS text only reinforces the beloved, trusted and familiar brand name and signals fun, safe, educational content for families. The new logo’s colors, including PBS’ blue and PBS KIDS’ green, combined with the style of the iconography, are also designed to complement the iconic PBS brand.

Complementing the logo redesign, PBS KIDS recently worked on an expansion to its brand package that is reflective of the kids and families they serve. The creative includes a vibrant color pallet with combinations that conform with accessibility standards, whimsical typography, engaging design elements, and new visuals of people and places that bring a diversity of culture, race, ethnicity, geography, family structure, varying abilities, body type, and more to the PBS KIDS visual world. The approach was to build on the existing graphics package, adding new friends to join PBS KIDS’ longstanding animated kids Dot, Del and Dee as part of one welcoming PBS KIDS world.

“We’re thrilled to unveil our new logo and branding updates, which are meant to bolster the PBS KIDS mission by continuing to reflect and reach our audience in a multiplatform environment,” said Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President & General Manager, PBS KIDS. “Our new logo is fun, welcoming and bright, and resonates with kids and parents as a new look for the PBS KIDS brand that they love and trust.”

PBS KIDS worked with Lippincott, a global creative consultancy, to develop the new logo.

After 23 Years, PBS Kids Changes Its On Air Look Likely Streamlining

PBS Kids is educational brand owned by the Public Broadcasting Service which caters to children aged 3 to 9 years with a mixture of animation and live-action to help improve on their maths, literacy and other curriculum based activities.

For almost 23 years, PBS Kids had been going green featuring sibling duo Dash and Dot (which were part of the PBS Kids logo) before getting less screentime and ultimately replaced with twin siblings Dee and Del. Prior to that there was Hooper a pet pig for their defunct preschool block.

Through several bumpers and on-screen ads you'd see these characters goofing off within couch cushions or doing some site seeing or exploration within a fish bowl but all that's about to change.

As seen across several media outlets, PBS Kids is retiring their logo with it the mascots Dee, Del and when available Dot for something bland, simple and other people's terms boring. This change is likely due to PBS's current logo which was unveiled in 2019 during their 50th anniversary.

The intention for that logo was to better suit it for a digital platform and the likely reason for the change with PBS Kids was part of an realignment strategy as the kids brand had been digital since the revival of their 24 hour service.

No on screen graphics have been provided during the time of publishing but from the looks of the main PBS brand. I'm not expecting any mascots but more of what's seen on other brands like Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon.

The change will take some getting use to but the important thing is we're still getting a PBS Kids which is not joining other brands that are shutting their doors on cable but working as a multimedia outlet which helps strengthen the variety for this audience.

Roundups #40: Donkey Hodie Renewed For A Second Season On PBS Kids, New Competition Show Gogo For The Gold Coming In May To OUTtv And Captain Marvel Joins Fast And The Furious 10

Donkey Hodie to get a second season

PBS Kids has greenlit Season 2 of Donkey Hodie , a puppet series inspired by characters from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Produced by Fred Rogers Productions in collaboration with Spiffy Pictures, the series is a social-emotional learning series for kids ages 3-5 emphasizing skills to promote resilience, persistence, and problem solving. The new season will consist of 25 half-hour episodes including two specials and is slated to debut in 2023.

Donkey Hodie is set in the whimsical land of Someplace Else. The puppet series follows the adventures of Donkey Hodie, an enthusiastic and charming go-getter and her pals: Purple Panda, her loyal and empathetic best friend; Duck Duck, a practical, quick-witted young; and Bob Dog, an energetic and eager canine.

“Since its premiere last year, Donkey Hodie has brought engaging stories full of fun, humor, and important life lessons to kids across the country, helping them to see a world of possibilities,” shared Sara DeWitt, senior vice president and general manager, Children’s Media and Education, PBS. “We couldn’t be happier to bring a second season of adventures from Donkey and her friends to PBS Kids.”

Jonny McGovern Go Goes For The Gold

It has been over two decades since Jonny McGovern’s moniker The Gay Pimp hit the New York scene with pointed comedy, raunchy gay-themed music videos, and a mission to stir sh*t up. That, he certainly has. Though his modern-day approach to media is less youth-inspired angst, his political, social, and pop culture views are no less visceral and continue to push the envelope. Not afraid to share his opinion, he is more concerned about entertaining and getting his message across than he is in being politically correct, even towards the LGBTQ community. After years of staying ahead of the LGBTQ media curve, this talk show host, podcaster, comedian, writer, producer, and musician is not concerned with who does or doesn’t like him – and his fans can’t get enough.

He debuts his latest project, Go-Go for the Gold for OutTV this May with comments about the show:
"The show is a tongue-in-cheek look for “America’s #1 Champion Gogo Superstar.” It’s a reality competition show based on my many years working in nightlife with go-go boys. It’s so fun, so hilarious and sexy, but has a lot of heart. It really highlights the creativity and ingenuity of go-go boys and shows a wide spectrum of sexy, inclusive of different body types, and a wide range of ethnicities and gender expressions which we all thought was very important to spotlight on the show."

Brie Larson is now part of the fast franchise

In an Instagram post by Actor Vin Diesel it was confirmed that actress, Brie Larson will be part of the upcoming Fast and Furious 10 movie, which is set to debut in May of 2023. This new installment of the Fast and Furious franchise marks 22 years since the original movie debuted in June of 2001.

Vin Diesel has been a part of the Fast and Furious movie franchise since the original movie. With work starting on the 10th movie it's clear that his excitement for the franchise is still strong, based on the passionate words in his Instagram post which highlights their newest cast member Brie Larson.

“Yeah yeah yeah… you see this angel over my shoulder cracking me up, you say to your self “ that’s Captain Marvel”. Clearly, there is love and laughter in this image. What you don’t see, however, is the character you will be introduced to in Fast10. You have no idea how timeless and amazing she will be in our mythology. Beyond her beauty, her intellect… her Oscar, haha is this profound soul who will add something you might not have expected but yearned for. Welcome to the FAMILY Brie.”

MultiChoice Delays The Launch Of KIX And PBS Kids On Lower Bouquets

MultiChoice was scheduled to launch the martial arts movie channel KIX on DStv Access bouquets while the educational brand PBS Kids would be added to Easyview. At the same time, e.tv's 4 channels were scheduled for termination and new prices take into effect.

From April 1st, viewers were overjoyed to see the 4 e.tv channels haven't been removed as planned as the channels were extended for another 2 months delaying the launches of PBS Kids and KIX.

eMedia Investments is taking MultiChoice to the Competition Tribunal in regard to their agreement for the 4 channels currently seen on DStv. The brand demands for more money and obviously MultiChoice refused which led to the axing of their channels from the brand by June.

eMedia Investments was asked in a recent interview about the possibility of MultiChoice returning the soon-to-be axed channels eToonz, eMovies, eMovies Extra and eExtra and here's their statement:

It will be up to them. Our strategy is that our channels are free-to-air channels and should be available wherever people access channels. So that's their decision, there's no regulation that they need to carry the channels. Our view is that they should.

The worst part to all of this consumers will have to wait likely until the current agreement ends in May to know the outcome with both parties.

Just by analysing this situation, MultiChoice seems affirmed with their decision of scrapping the 4 channels as they already launched DreamWorks and plan to add another movie channel in the near future.

As Predicted, PBS Kids Replaces eToonz On DStv Easyview With eExtra Possibly Being Phased Out For Either Telemundo And/Or Novela Magic

MultiChoice continues disregarding the existence of Easyview package which is set to lose 2 channels by the end of March. As seen in the previous week, MultiChoice found the relevant replacement for some packages.

Through an enquiry it was revealed that Easyview customers would be getting the educational channel, PBS Kids (channel 313) in place of entertainment channel eToonz (channel 311) and of course MultiChoice couldn't bother to mention that when announcing the addition of KIX to Access.

PBS Kids was available on the Easyview package when the channel was exclusive to the DStv app but likely due to costs it was put on Access when it launched in 2019.

Multichoice won't be adding anymore community channels

PBS Kids features a broad mix of live-action and animated children's programs which are designed for improving early literacy, math, and social-emotional skills of young children aged 3-9.

Also joining eToonz out the door by the end of March is eExtra of course details of a potential replacement channel is still awaiting confirmation. According to sources, either Telemundo from NBCUniversal or M-Net's Novela Magic will be slotted on the package.

Novela Magic and Telemundo both offer their fair share of repeats compared to Zee World and Star Life. So the idea of one of these two even both being made available to the platform doesn't seem far fetched.

Could eNCA launch on Openview?

If you browse each DStv package, only Easyview customers don't have access to the existing bulk of local dramas spread across the M-Net channels if anything that channel will benefit that package. This channel will never make up for the loss of eExtra if anything you could consider it a suitable successor to SABC Encore.

Telemundo on the other hand could make up for eExtra as the content seen on both outlets were produced outside of Africa. The problem only dives down to the location in which these programs were filmed which can be a problem to some viewers as one had Turkish and Korean and this one Mexican.

Charlie Brown's Early Years - Peter Robbins

Peter Robbins (born Louis Nanasi; August 10, 1956 – c. January 18, 2022) was an American child actor. Robbins gained national fame in the 1960s as being the first actor to voice Charlie Brown in the Peanuts animated specials. As reported in the past week, the child actor passed away at the age of 65 so here's a list of Peanut projects the former child actor starred in.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1963)
A 1965 documentary film was screened for the Greater San Francisco Advertising Club, where it was received with considerable enthusiasm, but Mendelson was unsuccessful in securing sponsorship.

Although never aired on television, the documentary was instrumental in garnering commercial support and the creative teamwork that resulted in A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965 and the ensuing series of Peanuts television specials.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
On their way to join their friends ice skating on a frozen pond, Charlie Brown confides in Linus that, despite the Christmas season, he is still depressed. After Linus' reproach, and a put-down from Violet, he visits Lucy's psychiatric booth and tells her his problem. She suggests that he direct the group's annual Christmas play to get him involved, and he accepts.

A Charlie Brown Christmas received high ratings and acclaim from critics. It has been honored with an Emmy and a Peabody Award, and has become an annual presentation in the United States, airing on broadcast television during the Christmas season.

Charlie Brown's All-Stars (1966)
A sequel to the 1965 special A Charlie Brown's Christmas, Charlie Brown's baseball team loses their first game of the season, his players quit. Linus meets Charlie Brown with good news: Mr. Hennessey, the operator of the local hardware store, is offering to sponsor Charlie Brown's baseball team, place them in an organized league, and even buy them new uniforms. The special was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program in 1967.

It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
Second holiday themed special following A Charlie Brown's Christmas, as Halloween approaches, Linus and Lucy Van Pelt go out to the local pumpkin patch to find a pumpkin. Lucy selects the largest they can find, and makes Linus carry it back to the house. He becomes upset when Lucy starts cutting it to make a jack-o-lantern. After the opening titles, Snoopy helps Charlie Brown finish raking a pile of leaves. Linus jumps into the heap with a large lollipop, resulting in leaves sticking to his face and lollipop. Then Lucy entices Charlie Brown to kick her football by showing him a signed agreement, but then pulls it away as usual before pointing out the agreement never got notarized.

You're In Love, Charlie Brown (1968)

Second non-holiday themed special following Charlie Brown's All-Stars, with summer approaching, Charlie Brown is upset that he cannot enjoy himself like all the others, but when he sees the Little Red-Haired Girl on a passing bus, Linus figures out that Charlie Brown is in love.

He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown (1968)
Snoopy's persistent mischief is angering the other kids in the neighborhood, and they all demand that Charlie Brown do something about it because "He's your dog, Charlie Brown!"

It Was A Short Summer, Charlie Brown (1969)
School is out for the summer and Charlie, Linus, Schroeder, and Pig Pen are planning to spend it reading every comic book, watching television, playing baseball, and playing classical music. However, Lucy tells them that she signed them up for camp. The girls are eager to go, but the boys hate the idea. The boys shove each other to get on the bus, while the girls line up in order. At camp, Charlie is chosen as captain of the boys' camp. The boys and girls have a swim race, which the girls win easily. Then they have a softball game, which the boys lose with only one run. Other competitions are just as lopsided.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969)
When Charlie Brown's baseball team loses the first Little League game of the season, he becomes convinced that he will not win anything. Linus encourages him to maintain a positive attitude and suggests that people learn more from losing. When Charlie Brown remains morose ("That makes me the smartest person in the world", he says), Linus assures him that he will eventually win at something, but makes a liar of himself by beating Charlie at a game of tic-tac-toe. That night, Snoopy has a nightmare where he is a World War I flying ace, and is shot down while fighting an aerial battle with an unknown enemy (possibly the Red Baron), and he takes over Charlie Brown's bed. The next morning, when Charlie Brown stops at Lucy's psychiatric help booth, she prepares slides to show him all of his faults; the experience only leaves him more depressed. On the way to school the next day, Lucy jokingly suggests that Charlie Brown enter the school spelling bee. However, Linus considers it a good idea and encourages him despite the jeers of Lucy, Violet, and Patty.

This was Peter Robbins final feature film project before his death.

Insidus Content Roundups #4: [MUST WATCH] The Flying Luna Clipper, PBS Kids Announces New Series Work It Out Wombat And WarnerMedia Greenlit Jessica's Big Little World And More Craig Of The Creek

Recommendation: The Flying Luna Clipper

The story revolves around thrill seekers hoping onto a plane and going on random adventures on random islands. It's got incredible graphics and a unique outlook on the world.

The film was produced with MSX a gadget which came out in 1983. The creator Ikko Ono often gives life to inanimate objects or things that shouldn't be talking in most of his work.

The Flying Luna Clipper was actually a collection of short movie clips that was made with an MSX micro computer. The movie was made for a series entitled A Gross Leader. The idea of that theatre came from concepts used to screen his media including virtual and open theatres and the place Tahiti.

The movie is a must watch if you're more focused on the visuals as opposed to the storyline.

PBS Kids Greenlits Work It Out Wombats!

PBS KIDS has greenlit Work it Out Wombats!, a new 2D-animated preschool series from GBH Kids (Molly of Denali ) and Pipeline Studios (Alma’s Way) that’s set to premiere in early 2023.

Set in a fantastical animal world, the series stars a trio of spirited and creative marsupials (pictured) who share a treehouse apartment with their grandmother. Stories highlight concepts from computer science, such as sequencing and debugging, to show preschoolers how computational thinking can help them solve problems, express themselves and perform tasks.

‘Craig of the Creek’ Gets Season 5 Renewal and Spin-Off Greenlights

WarnerMedia Kids & Family announced two new project greenlights and a series renewal that will expand the storytelling universe of the multi award-nominated, Craig of the Creek. The series has been picked up for Season 5 with spinoffs to include a preschool series, Jessica’s Big Little World, and an original animated movie, Craig of the Creek: The Movie.

“In Craig of the Creek, Matt Burnett, Ben Levin, Tiffany Ford, and the entire crew created a charming, imaginative, and inclusive world that represents the best in kids’ animation,” commented Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. president Sam Register. “We could not ask for a better foundation as we expand the stories of the Creek into preschool and long-form projects ensuring that Craig of the Creek is well on its way to becoming our studio’s next big kids’ franchise.”

“Since its debut, Craig of the Creek has been an instant audience favorite, capturing the joy of being a kid along with the humor and heart of family life,” added Amy Friedman, Warner Bros. head of kids & family programming. “We are so thrilled with how Cartoon Network Studios has opened up Craig’s world and that his hilarious little sister Jessica, a breakout character, will now have her own show!”

In Jessica’s Big Little World , no task is too big, even when you’re little! Set to debut in 2023, this preschool spinoff centers on the Creek’s favorite resilient little sister, Jessica, as she navigates her way through a world where everything seems much bigger than she is. Although she’s the youngest and still needs help with a lot, Jessica is inspired by the grown-ups and bigger kids around her and is persistent in her quest to conquer monumental kid tasks like creating a bedtime routine or saying hi to a new classmate. With the help of her friends, imaginary and real, Jessica sets off to take on the world, even if she still does suck her thumb…sometimes.

Following Cartoonito’s framework of Humancentric Learning,
Jessica’s Big Little World aims to mirror important moments and milestones in children’s lives to help them recognize and appreciate that difficult experiences and feelings are universal. The preschool series will weave themes of communication, imaginative play, perseverance, and embracing age-appropriate strategies for overcoming obstacles throughout.

Craig of the Creek: The Movie is an origin story of the Creek’s bravest explorer that could only be told through the scope of a movie. Craig Williams is the shy, new kid in town, longing for his old home and life. Little does he know, he’ll soon set off on the biggest adventure he could ever dream of. Treasure maps, pirate ships, and a villain who wants to destroy the Creek are just the beginning in this treasure hunting epic! Craig of the Creek: The Movie is expected to premiere in 2023.

Season 5 of Craig of the Creek follows the precocious Craig and his best friends Kelsey and J.P., as they transform everyday afternoons into extraordinary adventures through imaginative play at the neighborhood creek. The new episodes will delve deeper into the endless world of the Creek as Craig embarks on more journeys with friends new and old, finding adventure, mystery, and fun around every bend. Season 5 is slated for release early next year.

Craig of the Creek, Craig of the Creek: The Movie , and Jessica’s Big Little World are executive produced and co-created by Emmy-nominated Steven Universe writers Matt Burnett and Ben Levin. Jessica’s Big Little World is executive produced and co-created by former Craig of the Creek supervising director, Tiffany Ford.

“Seeing how viewers automatically fell in love with Jessica, the littlest member of the Williams family, and her big belief that she can do what everyone else does, developing Jessica’s Big Little World was a natural next step in the Craig universe,” shared Burnett and Levin. “Tiffany has been part of the Craig of the Creek family since the beginning and there isn’t a better voice to bring our pint-sized heroine’s journey to preschoolers.”

“I’m very much looking forward to the stories we’re going to tell on Jessica’s Big Little World,” added Ford. “We hope to bring forth relatable adventures that kids and parents can both connect to. I personally feel close to Jessica— she reminds me of people in my family, experiences that I’ve had, and friends that I’ve known. As we continue to develop this very special show, Jessica’s journey to becoming a big kid has also inspired me to find a more kind and compassionate approach to the even smallest moments in life.”

New Series Alert: Martha Speaks Season 5 Coming Soon To PBS Kids Africa

The series revolves around a talking dog named Martha, who is owned by 10-year-old Helen Lorraine (known in the books as Helen Finney). Whenever Helen feeds Martha alphabet soup , the pasta letters somehow travel to her brain instead of her stomach, giving her the ability to speak human words. The show takes place in the fictional town of Wagstaff City, likely referring to Flagstaff, Arizona or even a fictionalized version of Flagstaff, Maine.

Based on the 1992 children's book with the same name. The show focuses on mainly synonyms and vocabulary, with each episode featuring an underlying theme illustrated with (usually informal) keywords, but can occasionally focus on introducing preschoolers to different science and other learning concepts, such as the Spanish language through passing mentions, history, and astronomy.

The fifth season consists of eight episodes which debuted back in 2013 in the United States and is one of the shortest seasons for the show.

The fifth season airs Fridays at 16:00 as part of Fresh Fridays from 4 June.
