Razia Sultana - The First Woman Sultanate Of India

Also Read

Razia Sultana was the first woman Sultanate of India, and ruled the court of Delhi from the end of 1236 to 1240. The only ever woman to do so, she defied all odds to occupy the throne, including overcoming conflicts over her gender and her slave ancestry. During her reign, she proved her mettle as a just and capable ruler, and was renowned for her subversive actions, which varied from sporting men’s attire to printing coins in her own name and image.

In 1205, Razia Sultan was born into the household of Shams-us-din Iltutmish as his only daughter. Although he had entered Delhi as a slave worker under Qutb-ud-din, he had impressed the ruler with his efficiency, and had been appointed as a provincial governor. Iltutmish sought to impart these same qualities to all his children, including Razia, and ensured they were all well educated and trained in archery, martial arts, and administration.

On 30th April, 1236, Iltutmish passed away, appointing Razia as his rightful heir. The Muslim nobility refused to accept this, and therefore, they installed her incompetent brother, Rakn ud din Firuz, on the throne. His rule, which was managed by Shah Turkaan, Iltutmish's widow, came to an abrupt end a mere 6 months later, when both he and his mother were assassinated. Razia was finally handed the reigns to the kingdom on 10th November, 1236.

Razia ascended the throne as Jalâlat ud-Dîn Raziyâ, and immediately dropped her veil, replacing it with men’s attire instead. She authoritatively issued coins in her name, proclaiming herself to be the ‘pillar of women’ and ‘Queen of the times.’

She was proud of her kingdom, and worked on conquering new territories and strengthening it. She also made breakthroughs in its administration, and established schools, academies, and public libraries. She gained many supporters and admirers through her reign.

The Turkish nobles were displeased by Razia’s efficient rule as well as her rumoured involvement with Jamal ud-Din Yaqut, an Abyssinnian Siddi slave. Despite her courageous efforts, she was taken into capture, and her brother, Muizuddin Bahram Shah, usurped the throne once Yaqut was murdered.

Malik Altunia, the governor of Bhatinda grew to fall in love with Razia’s charm and wit, and took her as his wife. He rebelled against the Turkish nobles and was determined to win Razia back her kingdom; he planned a siege on behalf of his sovereign. Together, they marched towards Delhi, but were unsuccessful in their conquest. They were defeated by Bahram on 13th October, 1240.

Raziyâ and Altunia fled Delhi after their defeat and reached Baithal the very next day. With their remaining forces abandoning them, they met their unfortunate ends at the hands of the Hindu Jats there, who robbed and killed them.

Till date, the final resting place of Razia remains unknown, with no supporting archaeological or documentary evidence. The site of her grave could be in Baithal, Delhi, or Tonk. Her legacy, however, has stood the test of time; women throughout the ages have invoked her name in their lyrics and in their folklore, spreading her story across distant lands.

New Series Alert: Kuiertyd Premium Possibly Shelved On eExtra As Channel Loads Up On New Show, Die Vertroueling

Kuiertyd Premium launched last year in an attempt to boost primetime on eExtra with shows like Impak and Kruispad. Just like the Afrikaans movie block, it appears as if Kuiertyd Premium has silently been scrapped as the timeslot is being allocated for the 21:30 series, Die Put.

If I had to guess the reason for the changes, it probably has something to do with the viewership, I'm not saying these two mentioned shows performed poorly but my hunch is that the weekday offering had more viewers and they want to keep the shows close.

What better way to end of Kuiertyd Premium then with a series that doesn't broadcast during the daytime like #DisComplicated, Elif and Verdeelde Liefde. In the end, it's probably best as eVOD will have more time to build their slate of Turkish shows.

The channel in question eExtra had launched their first non-Kuiertyd show Sisterhood. So in some way you could say that would be sought out as a weekend replacement unless that too is being shelved for weekdays possibly after Orphan Of A Nation.

Regardless, Kuiertyd is forever expanding their portfolio of content with their first show in 2023 Daai Crazy Somer launching on e.tv. The brand will be uploading another show few weeks after the debut which is the eVOD exclusive crime drama, Die Vertroueling.

Die Vertroueling tells the story of a retired soldier who works as a bodyguard and tries to find real culprits responsible for an armed attack at the concert hall. The series stars Burak Deniz and Alina Boz.

The series replaces Die Put weekdays at 21:30 from 24 January 2023.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises, entertainment company based in India which distributes several content through Zee World and it's spinoff Zee One are set to launch two female led dramas Carmen and Razia Sultan to the African market in the coming future.

Carmen is a Egyptian drama which follows the titular character whose in search for fame and relocates to Cairo where she finds no alternative but to lie. Then she falls in love with Tawfik which puts her in comedic situations.

Despite not being Bollywood show, there are a few of cast members which are said to be based in India. Carmen ensembles Reham Haggag, Mohamed Al Kilan, Walaa Elshrif, Mohammad Mahran, Omar El Shenawy and Mohamed Marzaban.

Based on the real life figure of the same name, Razia Sultan is a historical drama that charts the rise of a remarkable real-life figure, the first woman to ever rule the Delhi Sultanate. It has the typical court intrigue you can expect from "Game of Thrones" type series.

Interesting enough, it was produced by &TV the same network that brought on shows like Begusarai, Gangaa and Jodha & Akbar to Zee World with Razia Sultan joining the trio.

Carmen will be made available to consumers from December 6th while the historical drama Razia Sultan will only launch by January 13th on Zee World and later on these shows will trade places as seen with a bunch of other content such as Guddan for instance.

Boomerang Rebranding To Cartoonito In Central Eastern Europe??? As The Schedule Funnels It's Schedule With Preschool Content

Last year, I did a few articles about Cartoonito's future on Warner Bros. Discovery and with Boomerang having less content to themselves or at least made it feel like Boomerang my theory was that the preschool brand would take up its space.

There's a lot of evidence which supports that theory, first has to do with its demise in Latin America I mean the Spanish part of the United States has no Boomerang and the second having to do with the fact that there hasn't been any family content on the channel.

If I had to look at the series launches this year we had Akissi and Legend Of Spark of which one is considered preschool and another branded Cartoonito. Other shows to have launched include Thomas And Friends, CoComelon and initially acquired for Boomerang, Lucas The Spider.

Possibly signalling the end of Boomerang's family slate with Looney Tunes scrapped and Tom And Jerry In New York on hiatus likely cancelled. In the end, there's always Movie Stars which seems to be the only thing not feeling the Cartoonito effect for now.

In CEE, a user unveiled Boomerang's schedule for next year as seen below:

Notice how shows like Looney Tunes Cartoons and Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! fell off the schedule and the remaining shows all cater to preschoolers which could be a possible hint to the Cartoonito linear channel.

Although it hasn't been confirmed, would it be shocking if that were the case I mean the brand had retained some preschool shows while others were made available to the Cartoonito block.
